The Palestinian issue is one of the complex international issues that has spanned several decades. It is a historical matter concerning the rights of Palestinians and their existence in their state of occupied Palestine and the Middle East, and it is considered one of the most complex issues in the world, reflecting the long history of conflict and tension between Palestinians and Zionists, leaving deep impacts both regionally and internationally.
In recent years, the global political arena has witnessed significant transformations that have impacted the Palestine issue, from changes in American and European global policies to changes in the relationships of Arab countries with the entity state, along with events related to the West Bank and the Zionist encroachments on Palestinian land and people, including settlement expansion and land confiscation, as well as conditions in the Gaza Strip following the genocidal war waged by the entity state and its Nazi army against all aspects of life, supported by unlimited American backing and Western complicity.
First: Global Political Transformations:
- American Transformations:
Observers of U.S. policy in the Middle East and its position on the Palestinian issue in general, and the problem of Palestinian refugees in particular, have noted its characteristics over more than six decades, which can be described as a lack of change and strong constants. This has been linked to a set of considerations and regional and international interests of the United States, which has worked to contain the Arab-Zionist conflict and thus its core, represented by the Palestinian issue, in order to achieve various goals, mainly to preserve American interests in the Middle East.
The stronger the relationships of American administrations with the entity state, the more diminished the interest in the Palestinian issue becomes. The position of successive American administrations regarding the Palestinian cause reflects the extent of the relationship with the entity state, so that as the administration's relations strengthen with it, interest in the Palestinian issue decreases. The Palestinian issue remains trapped in the ongoing conflict between pro-entity state pressure groups and successive American administrations in terms of supporting Zionist positions, which has affected peace opportunities and increased tensions in the region.
European Foreign Policies
The established truth about the European position is that they bear the full historical, moral, and legal responsibility for the emergence of the Palestinian issue and the establishment of the entity state on the ruins of the Palestinian people and their land, in violation of all international norms and laws.
Since the establishment of their alleged entity and its usurped state following the infamous "Balfour Declaration," through the partition decision, the announcement of the entity state, and the occupation of Palestinian land, up to the present day with the unlimited support for the entity state and the racist statements against the Palestinian people and the right of the entity to defend itself, there is a clear disregard for the rights of the Palestinian people and a denial of the justice of the Palestinian cause. Despite their awareness of this, it makes Europe, along with the international community, responsible for the displacement of the Palestinian people, their killing, the theft and usurpation of their land, and for igniting the entire Middle East, exposing it to continuous wars and instability.
The Europeans bear full historical, moral, and legal responsibility for the emergence of the Palestinian issue.
- China and Russia: Both countries are playing an increasingly prominent role in the Middle East, as they attempt to offer alternatives to traditional American influence, and have expressed their support for the Palestinian cause.
- Contemporary global crises: Conflicts in Ukraine, economic crises, and the impact of climate change are all issues that could affect countries' priorities in dealing with the Palestinian cause.
Secondly: Arab and Islamic transformations:
- The Arab Spring
The revolutions that took place in Arab countries in 2011 led to changes in political priorities, with a greater focus on domestic issues rather than regional matters. This affected the traditional support that some Arab countries provided to Palestine, in addition to the emergence of new leaderships that may be less preoccupied with the cause.
- Arab normalization with the occupation state: The normalization of relations by some Arab countries with the occupation state has affected traditional Arab solidarity with the Palestinian cause. While this normalization may be seen as a retreat in the status of Palestine, it can also be viewed as an opportunity to advance discussions about peace in the region.
- Islamic countries: The Organization of Islamic Cooperation and other organizations are attempting to enhance support for Palestine, but due to political divisions, they have not achieved tangible results.
Thirdly: Economic and social transformations:
- Strengthening Zionist dependency: The colonial policies of the occupation state have led to cumulative structural distortions in the Palestinian economy, creating a resource gap and labor market imbalances since the occupation of Palestine in 1948, and the subsequent occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip in 1967, along with the imposition of direct military rule. The aim has been to reinforce the economic dependency of Palestinian society through control over natural, financial, and economic resources, severing Palestinian trade relations with the outside world, and transforming Palestinian society into a consumer market for Zionist goods.
The "Arab Spring" has led to a change in priorities, focusing on domestic issues at the expense of the Palestinian cause.
- Restructuring alliances: The region has witnessed a restructuring of alliances and new conflicts, where some countries are prioritizing their economic interests at the expense of traditional political issues, which could lead to reduced pressure on the occupation state or even support for its concerns.
The Palestinian cause has seen significant developments on various political, economic, and social levels, the most important of which are:
- The political process: Since the end of the peace negotiations in 2014, there have been no real breakthroughs, while Palestinians continue their efforts to gain international recognition for the State of Palestine, including recognition at the United Nations.
- Settlement expansion: In recent years, the pace of Zionist settlement in the West Bank has increased, contributing to the worsening humanitarian situation and the conditions of Palestinian refugees.
- International Alignment: The international stance regarding the Palestinian issue varies, as many countries support the rights of Palestinians to self-determination, while others adopt pro-Israel positions.
- Escalation of Conflicts: Recent years have seen waves of escalation, such as the escalation in Gaza between the Palestinian resistance and Israel, which has led to significant humanitarian and social repercussions.
All of this has greatly affected the current situation in the West Bank and Gaza Strip, worsening living and humanitarian conditions as follows:
- Palestinians in Gaza live under a strict blockade that hinders their daily lives, while the West Bank witnesses an increase in arrests and Israeli incursions, with high unemployment rates and resource shortages leading to a deterioration in living conditions.
If the current tension continues, the conflict may become more complicated, exacerbating humanitarian and political situations.
- The ongoing Palestinian division for 18 years and its serious implications for the future of the Palestinian cause, alongside the Israeli dominance in Gaza on one hand and the West Bank on the other, necessitates the urgent need to end it as a fundamental condition for making progress in the Palestinian issue.
The Palestinian cause remains stagnant as long as there is unlimited American and Western-European support for Israel, and as long as the Arabs remain silent spectators without possessing leverage to advance the Palestinian issue within the Arab peace process. It continues to oscillate between several possible outcomes, including:
- Continuation of the Current Situation: If the current tension persists, the conflict may grow more complicated, exacerbating humanitarian and political situations.
- Two-State Solution: This remains the most proposed option, if the concerned parties can reach genuine agreements on key issues such as the borders of the Palestinian state, Jerusalem, and refugees.
- Increased International Support: Some countries and international organizations may seek to enhance efforts to create a conducive environment for resolving the conflict, but this requires political will from all parties.
- Demographic Change and Guardianship: Israeli policies may lead to demographic changes in the region, complicating future solutions further.
