The Israeli occupation authorities have released 33 Palestinian prisoners, including kids and women! This happened as part of an exchange deal with the Palestinian resistance movement Hamas. A bus from the International Committee of the Red Cross took them away from the Israeli Ofer military prison in Ramallah.
Who Got Released?
Hamas shared a list of the names of the Palestinian prisoners who were set free. It included 30 children and 3 women (2 from the West Bank and 1 from Jerusalem). On the other hand, the Israeli official broadcasting authority said that 11 Israelis were also released from Gaza.
From Jerusalem and the West Bank
Among those released were 9 people from Jerusalem, including the youngest prisoner named Nafuth Hammad. He's only 16 years old and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. The other 24 prisoners are from different parts of the West Bank.
What's the Deal?
This is the fourth group of Palestinian prisoners to be released from Israeli prisons. It's all part of a humanitarian truce between Hamas and Israel in the Gaza Strip. This truce was made possible through the help of Qatar, Egypt, and the United States. It started last Friday and was supposed to last for 4 days.
How Many Prisoners Have Been Released So Far?
With this latest release, Israel has let go of 150 Palestinian prisoners. In return, Hamas has released 50 Israelis. That's a lot of people getting a second chance!
More Prisoners to Be Released
Even though the humanitarian truce was supposed to end yesterday, Qatar announced that it will be extended for 2 more days. This means that more prisoners will be set free on both sides. It's great to see both parties working together to bring people back to their families.
What Led to This Exchange Deal?
On October 7, the Palestinian resistance attacked the settlements around Gaza. Sadly, more than 1,200 Israelis were killed, over 5,000 were injured, and about 239 were captured. In response, Israel launched a war on the Gaza Strip. This caused a lot of damage to buildings and hurt many innocent people, especially children and women.
