Niger's Decision

The ruling military junta in Niger, led by Colonel Amadou Abdel Rahman, announced the cancellation of a military agreement with the United States. The agreement which used to allow US military personnel and civilian employees from the Pentagon to be present in Niger.

Reason for Cancellation

The decision came after a recent visit by American officials, including US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Vee and General Michael Langley. The American delegation did not follow diplomatic protocols and failed to meet with General Omar Abdel Rahman Tiani, the leader of the regime.

Niger's Stance

Colonel Abdel Rahman stated that the American military presence in Niger is considered "illegal" and goes against the country's constitutional and democratic principles. Niger believes that the agreement was unjustly imposed by the United States in 2012.

American Presence in Niger

There are approximately 1,100 American soldiers in Niger, operating from two bases. One of these bases, Air Base 201 near Agadez, cost over $100 million to build and has been used to target ISIS and Al-Qaeda-affiliated groups in the Sahel region since 2018.

Niger's decision to cancel the military cooperation agreement with the United States reflects the government's commitment to the interests and aspirations of its people. The disagreement highlights the complexities of international relations and the importance of respecting diplomatic norms.
