Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that they are freezing their dealings with IGAD. They say that IGAD has made some mistakes that upset the Sudanese. One of the mistakes was inviting Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as "Hemedti," to attend a summit without asking Sudan first.
What is IGAD?
IGAD stands for Intergovernmental Authority for Development in East Africa. It's a group of countries in East Africa that work together on different issues like development and peace. Some of the countries in IGAD are Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, Sudan, and South Sudan.
Why Did Sudan Freeze Dealings with IGAD?
The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs is not happy with IGAD right now. They say that IGAD made some mistakes that upset them. One of the mistakes was inviting a person named Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, also known as "Hemedti," to attend a summit without asking Sudan first. Hemedti is the commander of the Rapid Support Forces, a group that has been fighting against the Sudanese army for a while now.
Who is Hemedti?
Hemedti used to be part of the Sudanese authority and was even the vice-president of the Sovereignty Council. But things changed, and he got into a big argument with the army commander. This argument led to a civil war and caused a lot of problems in Sudan. So, when IGAD invited Hemedti to their summit, Sudan got really upset.
What Happens Next?
IGAD offered to help mediate between the Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces. They wanted to host a meeting to try and solve the problems. But the Sudanese government didn't think it was a good idea. They believe that the outcomes of a previous summit should be implemented first before having another one.
Why is Sudan Upset?
Sudan thinks that IGAD's invitation to Hemedti was a violation of their sovereignty. They believe that IGAD should have asked for their permission before inviting someone who is causing trouble in their country. So, they decided to freeze their dealings with IGAD for now.
In summary, Sudan has decided to stop working with IGAD because they are upset about the way IGAD handled the situation.
