The Israeli Ministry of Defense estimated that since October 7 of last year, around 12,500 soldiers would become disabled because of the war in Gaza. Yedioth Ahronoth, an Israeli newspaper, reported that the Soldiers Rehabilitation Department of the Ministry of Defense has already helped 3,400 soldiers who were classified as disabled since that date.
Media Coverage
Even though the war was happening, the Israeli military didn't want the media to talk about certain things. They had rules that said the media couldn't share information about military operations or missile attacks without permission. But despite these rules, the newspaper still found out about the disabled soldiers.
Rescue Operations
The Israeli army has been working hard to help the wounded. They have a special unit called the 669 Rescue Unit, and they have already evacuated over a thousand injured people since the ground operation in Gaza started.
Conflicting Numbers
There have been different reports about the number of soldiers who got hurt. Last month, Yedioth Ahronoth said that 5,000 soldiers were wounded since the war began, and the Ministry of Defense recognized 2,000 of them as disabled. The newspaper also mentioned that the Rehabilitation Department receives about 60 wounded soldiers every day, and most of them have serious injuries.
Permanent Disabilities
Two weeks ago, Israeli Channel 12 said that 3,000 of the soldiers wounded in the war were classified as having permanent disabilities. This means that their injuries are so severe that they won't fully recover.
The Other Side
It's important to remember that there are two sides to every story. The Martyr Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, which is the military wing of Hamas, says that they target Israeli vehicles and soldiers every day. They even share videos of their operations. They also claim that the number of Israeli soldiers who died is higher than what is being announced.
