Leaders and politicians from the Muslim community have been speaking out against these acts of desecration. They want to make it clear that freedom of expression laws do not protect such actions. The General Assembly, made up of 193 countries, agreed on this resolution to show their disapproval of any violence against people based on their religion or beliefs.
The resolution, which was proposed by Morocco, strongly deplores any acts of violence against people because of their religion or beliefs. It also condemns any attacks on religious symbols, holy books, homes, businesses, properties, schools, cultural centers, places of worship, and religious sites. These actions are considered violations of international law.
Even before this resolution, the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva had already condemned the recent attacks on the Quran. However, some Western countries voted against this resolution. The new resolution calls for the condemnation of any attacks targeting the Quran and describes them as acts of religious hatred.
