An important agreement between the US and Egypt was held to send humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip

Today, October 19, 2023, the presidents of the United States and Egypt, Joe Biden and Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, had a phone call where they discussed the humanitarian situation in Gaza. They agreed to bring humanitarian aid into the Gaza Strip through the Rafah crossing in a sustainable manner.

What is the Rafah Crossing?

The Rafah crossing is a border crossing between Egypt and Gaza. It's an important entry point for people and goods going in and out of Gaza.

Gaza has been facing difficult times, and many people there are badly in need of help. Humanitarian aid includes things like food, medicine, and other essential supplies that can make a big difference in people's lives.

Details of the Agreement

The Egyptian presidency stated that the two presidents agreed to coordinate with international humanitarian organizations under United Nations supervision to make sure the aid reaches the people who need it in Gaza.

The First Batch of Aid

President Biden announced that President El-Sisi agreed to open the Rafah border crossing to allow the entry of a first batch of humanitarian aid trucks into Gaza. This is a great step towards helping people in need in Gaza.

When Will the Aid Arrive?

The aid trucks will most likely not cross before Friday because the road around the crossing needs repairs. The United Nations will be in charge of distributing the aid within Gaza.

What About People Leaving Gaza?

The United States is urging the Egyptian authorities to open the Rafah crossing so that people with foreign passports, especially Americans, can leave Gaza if they want to. President Biden mentioned that they will "remove people" from the sector, but we don't have all the details yet.

A Change of Plans

President Biden was supposed to go to Jordan for a summit with the Jordanian king and the Egyptian and Palestinian presidents. However, the summit got canceled because of the bombing of a hospital in Gaza. This incident caused anger and condemnation worldwide.

The agreement between the United States and Egypt to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza is a positive step towards helping the people in need.
