A Humanitarian Crisis in Gaza

The Mondoweiss website, based in the United States, has criticized American medical institutions for condemning an attack on October 7 while remaining silent about the ongoing genocide in Gaza. As the humanitarian crisis worsens in Gaza and Israeli bombings continue, the healthcare system has collapsed, and healthcare workers are being targeted.

A Disappointing Silence

Mondoweiss reported that American health institutions have failed to acknowledge the humanitarian crisis, the violation of international humanitarian law, and the deliberate targeting of healthcare workers. This silence is disappointing, especially considering that American medical institutions trained many of these doctors.

Alarming Statistics

The World Health Organization has recorded over 449 attacks on healthcare facilities by December 10. As of December 16, only 8 hospitals remain partially operational, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs. The UN Secretary-General also revealed that 152 UN staff members had been killed as of January 15, 2024.

Direct Targeting

The Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor reported that 657 healthcare workers, including 301 deaths, were targeted. Additionally, 208 medical facilities, including ambulances, were destroyed, and over 115 journalists were killed. These numbers continue to rise as the bombings persist.

Appeals for Ceasefire

Doctors Without Borders has issued statements calling for a ceasefire to protect innocent civilians and healthcare workers risking their lives on the front lines.

Hypocrisy in Healthcare Institutions

Mondoweiss highlighted the hypocrisy within healthcare institutions, citing the rush of the former President of the American Medical Association, Dr. Gerald Harmon, to call for an immediate ceasefire and an end to attacks on healthcare workers and facilities. However, when it comes to Palestinian civilians, the unreasonable has become justified.

Questioning the Silence

American students and healthcare workers are questioning why their institutions refuse to acknowledge the humanitarian crisis in Gaza while the rest of the world appeals for a ceasefire. They wonder when the call for a ceasefire became controversial.

Failing to Uphold Values

Mondoweiss asserts that the leaders of American medical research institutions do not represent their communities and fail to uphold the values of the Hippocratic Oath through their actions.
