A New Leader for Kuwait
The Council of Ministers has chosen Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad as the new Emir of the country. He will be taking over from Emir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who served for 3 years.
Following the Rules
So, how did Sheikh Mishal become the Crown Prince? Well, it all started on October 7, 2020, when Emir Sheikh Nawaf recommended him for the position. This recommendation followed the rules laid out in the Kuwaiti constitution. According to Article 4, the Crown Prince must be appointed within a year of the Emir taking office.
Taking the Oath
The next day, on October 8, Sheikh Mishal took the constitutional oath in front of the Emir. The National Assembly also held a special session where all 59 members pledged their allegiance to Sheikh Mishal. It was a big moment for him!
A Brief Background
Sheikh Mishal was born in Kuwait in 1940. His father, Sheikh Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, was the Tenth Emir of Kuwait. Sheikh Mishal went to school at the Mubarakiya School in Kuwait City. After that, he studied in the United Kingdom and graduated from the Hendon Police College in 1960.
A Career in Public Service
When Sheikh Mishal returned to Kuwait, he joined the Ministry of the Interior. He worked there for about 20 years and held various positions. In 1967, he became the head of the General Investigations and later transformed it into the State Security Administration. In 2004, he was appointed as the Deputy Chief of the National Guard.
Other Roles and Honors
Aside from his official positions, Sheikh Mishal has also held honorary roles. He has been the honorary president of the Kuwaiti Pilots Association since 1973. He was also involved in preserving Nabati poetry as the head of the Diwan of Nabati Poets. He believes in passing down the customs and traditions of Kuwait through poetry.
A Well-Traveled Leader
Sheikh Mishal has accompanied the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad on official and private visits. He was even with him during his last treatment trip to the United States. He has also contributed to the strategic document for the National Guard, which focuses on excellence in security and military operations.
A French Honor
In 2018, Sheikh Mishal was awarded the "Commander of the Legion of Honor" from France. This is a big deal and shows the strong friendship between France and Kuwait.
Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad is now the new Emir of Kuwait. We wish him all the best as he takes on this important role!
