On the tenth anniversary of Kuwait being named a "Humanitarian Center" by the United Nations, we pause to reflect on the journey of this nation in the field of humanitarian and charitable work, and the role of Kuwait's political leadership in promoting and sustaining this humanitarian approach.
This recognition is a testament to Kuwait's significant contributions in supporting distressed peoples worldwide and a confirmation of its enduring commitment to the values of humanity and generosity.
Historical Beginning of Humanitarian Work in Kuwait
The history of charitable work in Kuwait dates back centuries, with the country known for its generosity and solidarity with other peoples, even during periods when it faced resource scarcity. For example, in 1624, Kuwait provided assistance to the people of Oman during the Portuguese invasion, demonstrating the deep-rooted humanitarian values in Kuwaiti society.
Over time, Kuwait continued to support neighboring and crisis-stricken nations, whether through emergency aid or sustainable development projects. This approach played a significant role in establishing Kuwait's reputation as a leading humanitarian nation in the region.
Official Establishment of Humanitarian Work under Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah
Kuwait's humanitarian efforts were crowned with the designation of Kuwait as a "Humanitarian Center" by the United Nations in 2014, along with the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may Allah have mercy on him, being honored with the title "Leader of Humanitarian Work." This UN recognition came after decades of serious and continuous work led by Kuwait to support humanitarian causes around the world.
During his rule, Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad exemplified the leader who made Kuwait a global symbol of giving. He launched numerous humanitarian initiatives, such as the donor conference to support the Syrian people, initiatives to support education and healthcare in developing countries, and significant support for reconstruction efforts in Iraq and Yemen. Under his leadership, Kuwait became a model for how to provide aid without discrimination or bias.
Continuity of Humanitarian Work under Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah
After the passing of Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad, may Allah have mercy on him, the late Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may Allah have mercy on him, continued to enhance Kuwait's position as a pioneering humanitarian country. Sheikh Nawaf recognized that sustaining this humanitarian approach was an integral part of Kuwait's identity, supporting the humanitarian projects that began under his predecessor, and launching new initiatives focused on sustainable development and alleviating the suffering of peoples in conflict zones.
Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah's Role in Enhancing Kuwait's Humanitarian Status
Under the leadership of Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, may Allah preserve him, Kuwait continued to provide humanitarian aid on a large scale. Under his leadership, Kuwait launched numerous major humanitarian initiatives, including the "Kuwait's Rally" campaign to support the people of Gaza, which was a swift and effective response to the deteriorating humanitarian situation there. This campaign not only provided relief materials but also included the participation of Kuwaiti volunteer teams who provided direct support to those in need in Gaza.
In addition, Kuwait played a pivotal role in supporting Sudan during natural disasters, providing food and medical aid, and sending specialized medical teams, which helped alleviate the suffering of those affected and strengthen their resilience.
Long-term Humanitarian Projects
Kuwait's efforts were not limited to emergency relief but extended to long-term projects aimed at supporting development and stability in needy countries. The Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development was established in 1961 as one of the oldest development institutions in the region. Since then, it has financed thousands of development projects in more than 100 countries. These projects included building schools, hospitals, water, and electricity networks, improving the quality of life for millions of people worldwide.
International Recognition and Honors
In 2014, the international recognition of Kuwait as a Humanitarian Center was the culmination of all these efforts. In 2019, the World Bank awarded Kuwait an honorary prize for its role in supporting global development, further emphasizing the importance of Kuwait's efforts in improving the conditions of people across the globe.
Continuity of the Giving Approach
Kuwait, under the leadership of Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, remains committed to providing humanitarian support and continues to play a pivotal role on the international stage as a donor state. Through cooperation with international and regional organizations, Kuwait works to ensure the continuity of this approach, making it a model in the field of humanitarian work.
On the tenth anniversary of Kuwait's designation as a "Humanitarian Center," we remember that this recognition is the culmination of a long journey of giving and benevolence. From Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and now Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Kuwait has set an example in humanitarian work. Today, Kuwait continues to strengthen its international standing as a beacon of generosity and goodness, reaffirming that humanitarian values are at the core of its national identity.
