The Catastrophic Situation in Zamzam Camp
In a camp called Zamzam for displaced people in Darfur, western Sudan, a child dies every two hours. It's really sad and the organization Doctors Without Borders is really worried about it.
How Many Children Are Dying?
The head of Doctors Without Borders for emergencies in Sudan, Claire Nicolet, said that they estimate about 13 children die every day in the camp. That's because many of these children are suffering from acute malnutrition and if they don't get treatment, they could die within 3 to 6 weeks. It's really scary!
Malnutrition is a Big Problem
Did you know that almost a quarter of the children in the camp have severe malnutrition? That means they don't have enough food to eat and it's making them really sick. And even more shocking, about 40% of children between 6 months and two years old are also suffering from malnutrition. It's a big problem!
The Worrying Number of Deaths
The Zamzam camp is the largest and oldest in the country, and it's home to a lot of people, between 300,000 to 500,000. Sadly, the number of deaths there is really worrying. It's about 2.5 deaths for every 10,000 people every day. That's a lot!
Why Aren't They Getting Help?
Before the war started, the people in the camp used to get a lot of help from other countries. They would get food, healthcare, and clean water. But now, they have been almost completely abandoned. The World Food Program hasn't given them any food since May, and they have to drink water from marshes or rivers. It's not safe!
A Huge Humanitarian Crisis
Not only is the situation in the Zamzam camp bad, but the whole country of Sudan is going through a big humanitarian crisis. The United Nations experts say that about 25 million people, including 14 million children, urgently need help. Many people have been forced to leave their homes and live in abandoned schools and buildings. They don't have much support from international organizations, and it's really tough for them.
The Fighting in Sudan
Since April 15, there has been a lot of fighting in Sudan between different groups. Thousands of people, including 10,000 to 15,000 in Darfur, have lost their lives because of this. It's really sad and it needs to stop.
