Tracing the Threads of Muslim Connection to Palestine

  1. Palestine is an Islamic land that has been under the banner of Islam for thirteen centuries since it was conquered during the time of the righteous Caliph Umar ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him. According to Islamic jurists, “If the enemy overpowers a land belonging to the Muslims or a region of it, then Jihad becomes an obligation on every individual. In this case, women, slaves, and minors can participate without the permission of their husbands, masters, or those responsible for them, and the debtor can join without the permission of his creditor” (1).

Palestine is an Islamic land, and generations of Muslims have taken turns caring for it. It is the duty of Muslims to liberate it, regardless of the sacrifices it may require. Those who do not work towards its liberation are considered sinful in the eyes of Allah.

  1. The land of Palestine is the path of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, in his journey from Mecca to Jerusalem. There is great wisdom in the fact that, after the Isra (Night journey) and Mi'raj (Ascension), the Prophet did not ascend directly to the heavens from Mecca but instead went to Palestine. Allah could have taken His Prophet directly to the heavens from the sacred city of Mecca, but Allah chose to make this miraculous journey to the sacred land of Jerusalem to tie the Al-Masjid Al-Haram (the Sacred Mosque in Mecca) and the Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa (the Farthest Mosque in Jerusalem) together forever. This is highlighted in the Quran: “Glorified is He who took His Servant by night from the Sacred Mosque to the Farthest Mosque, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him some of Our signs. Surely, He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.” (Al-Isra: 1)

This elevates the status of the land of Palestine in the hearts of all Muslims.

  1. The land of Palestine is the first Qibla for Muslims, and they prayed towards it for seventeen months before the direction of prayer was changed to the Kaaba in Mecca. Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, located in Jerusalem, is one of the mosques that attracts worshippers, and praying in it is like praying five hundred prayers in any other mosque except Al-Masjid Al-Haram in Mecca and the Prophet's Mosque in Medina.
  2. The land of Palestine is soaked with the blood of Muslim martyrs and conquerors, on top of which the noble companions and leaders of the Islamic armies, such as Abu Ubaidah ibn Al-Jarrah, Muadh ibn Jabal, and others, may Allah be pleased with them all, and so the blood of Muslims who liberated Palestine from Crusaders and the Mongols. This gives the land a pure and sacred aura. In honoring the sacrifices of these heroes, we must not compromise or relinquish this sacred land. Otherwise, Allah’s curse will befall us, and history will condemn us.
  3. When Umar ibn Al-Khattab conquered Palestine, he did not divide its land among the conquerors. Instead, he designated it as the property of the Muslim descendants, to be inherited from one generation to the next. It is not the right of any king, leader, people, or generation to relinquish it to non-Muslims. It is the right of Muslims until the Day of Judgment. If a particular leader, people, or generation cannot liberate it, they must not surrender it to foreign control. They should endure until a generation of true Muslims, the rightful owners, comes to liberate it and restore its true Islamic identity.
  4. We are the true heirs of Ibrahim (Abraham), peace be upon him: “Indeed, the most worthy of Abraham among the people are those who followed him [in submission to Allah] and this prophet, and those who believe [in his message]. And Allah is the ally of the believers.” (Al-Imran: 68)
  5. The great general promise from Allah to the Muslims of victory and empowerment only if they adhere to their religion: “Allah has promised those among you who believe, and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the earth, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practice their religion, that which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islam). And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me. But whoever disbelieved after this, they are the Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah).” (An-Nur: 55)

Therefore, the ongoing struggle is inevitable between Muslims on one side and the enemies of Allah—Jews, Christians, and communists—lurking on the other side. Allah's promise of victory for the believers is unquestionable: “And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.” (Al-Hajj: 40)
