A powerful tornado swept through several villages in the South Moravia region of the Czech Republic on Thursday, injuring at least 150 people and causing major damage, according to initial estimates.

There was serious damage in at least seven villages, with many homes destroyed, according to press statements from the South Moravia Fire Department.

Search and rescue activities are underway for those who remain trapped under collapsed buildings.

A crisis team will be formed for the area, where a large number of firefighters, ambulances and special teams were sent, said Interior Minister Jan Hamacek.

"The tornado destroyed half of our settlement. All that's left are the walls of the houses. It also blew off the roof of our church and school and toppled 100-year-old trees. The situation is terrible,” said Marek Babis, deputy mayor of Hrusky, one of the hardest-hit areas.

Experts pointed out that it was the strongest tornado in the country's history and may have reached F3-F4 levels.

Turkish truck driver also affected

A Turkish truck driver in the area was also injured by the tornado.

He had been contacted and taken to a nearby hospital and was in good health, Turkey's Ambassador to the Czech Republic, Egemen Bagis, told Anadolu Agency.

Bagis also said that a team from the embassy will travel to South Moravia tomorrow to determine whether a monument for Turkish martyrs in the region was affected by the disaster./aa

Microsoft saw its market value close above $2 trillion for the first time in the company’s history at the US stock market's final bell Thursday.

The software maker's market cap managed to hit the $2 trillion mark Tuesday but failed to close above it. Its stock price ended Thursday at $266.69 per share, giving it a market valuation of almost $2.01 trillion.

Microsoft is the world's second-largest company by market cap after Apple, which has a market value of nearly $2.23 trillion.

The feat came hours after Microsoft unveiled its first major operating system revamp in six years -- Windows 11.

The update, which will be available this fall, will be free for Windows 10 users and will also work together with tablets, smartphones and apps.

"Today, the world needs a more open platform, one that allows apps to become platforms in their own right," Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said during the announcement.

Microsoft's share price has risen nearly 600% since Nadella took the helm in 2014./aa

Police are seeking a suspect after two Muslim sisters in the western Canadian province of Alberta were attacked in what is being called a hate-motivated crime, local media reported Thursday.

According to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, a man wearing a mask approached the women in St. Albert, shouting racial slurs and brandishing a knife.

One sister was grabbed by her hijab and thrown to the ground, where she was rendered unconscious. The second was also knocked to the ground and a knife was held at her throat while the suspect continued to yell racial slurs. He then ran away, police said. One of the sisters was taken to the hospital and both sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

A dog was brought in to track the suspect, but he escaped capture and is now the subject of a police search.

"Our Muslim neighbors, friends and family deserve to feel safe and welcome in their communities," said St. Albert Mayor Cathy Heron. "I'm heartbroken that many of them are not feeling safe right now."

The man was described as being about 50 years old, six feet tall and wearing dark jeans, a navy shirt and a red and white bandana.

The Edmonton area has been the scene of several hate-motivated attacks this year, including one where a woman in her 50s was out for a walk when she was grabbed from behind and thrown to the pavement, reported CTV News. In March, a man was charged after uttering slurs against a teenager wearing a hijab.

St. Albert is a city of about 65,000 situated just 12 kilometers (7.45 miles) from Edmonton. Ironically, St. Albert was named by the MoneySense digital magazine as the best place to live in Canada in 2014./aa

Two major indexes in US stock market hit record high levels on Thursday with President Joe Biden administration's much-awaited $1.2 trillion spending on infrastructure framework.

S&P 500 gained 24 points, or 0.6%, to close at 4,266 after hitting an all-time high of 4,271 earlier. The Nasdaq rose 98, or 0.7%, to end the day 14,369 after the tech-heavy index hit a record high of 14,414 earlier.

Electric carmaker Tesla saw its shares soar 3.6%, while Twitter increased 2.7%.

The blue-chip Dow Jones jumped 322, or 0.95%, to 34,196 at final bell. Investment banking majors Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley gained 2.1% and 1.4%, respectively, while Walt Disney increased 1.5%.

Biden announced earlier he agreed to and is supporting a bipartisan infrastructure framework that was formed by a group of senators, which will see $1.2 trillion spent in eight years, including $579 billion in new spending for the first five years.

The plan will have investments in clean transportation, universal broadband, clean power, rebuilding roads and bridges, modernizing transit and rail networks while reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Oil prices have continued to increase as reopening from the pandemic has accelerated around the world, which increased global demand.

Price of Brent crude was at $75.59 per barrel with a 0.5% gain after market close, while US' West Texas Intermediate was at $73.33 with a 0.3% gain./aa

The US government imposed trade restrictions on five companies in China, citing forced labor and human rights abuses in Xinjiang province, the White House announced Thursday.

The Commerce Department added the companies to its entity list "for participating in the practice of, accepting, or utilizing forced labor in Xinjiang and contributing to human rights abuses against Uyghurs and other minority groups in Xinjiang," it said.

The companies included Hoshine Silicon Industry, Xinjiang Daqo New Energy, Xinjiang East Hope Nonferrous Metals, Xinjiang GCL New Energy Material Technology and Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps.

It noted Hoshine used forced labor to manufacture silica-based products and the US ports of entry will immediately begin detaining shipments that contain silica-based products made by the company.

China's forced labor practices "run counter to our values as a nation and expose American consumers to unethical practices," in addition to leaving American businesses and workers to compete on an uneven playing field, said the White House.

The US banned certain products imported from Xinjiang in January and directed its ports to detain cotton and tomato products grown and produced by entities operating in the province.

China has been widely accused of putting the Uyghurs population into camps and there have been reports of the forced sterilization of Uyghur women. Many Uighurs -- as many as 1.6 million, according to the World Uyghur Congress -- have left China to live abroad.

Rights groups, including Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International, accuse Beijing of oppressing 12 million Uyghurs.

China has repeatedly denied allegations it is operating detention camps in the northwestern autonomous region, claiming instead that it is "re-educating" Uyghurs./aa

A YPG/PKK terror attack in northern Syria on Thursday killed one civilian and injured another.

YPG/PKK terrorists targeted the village of Molla Barho, south of Tal Abyad province, one of the areas they continue to occupy south of the M4 highway. Following the attack, about 100 civilians living in the village fled to Hammam Turkmen village.

Since 2016, Turkey has launched a trio of successful anti-terror operations across its border in northern Syria to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and enable peaceful settlement of residents: Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019).

Ankara has reached agreements with both the US and Russia to force the YPG/PKK terror group to withdraw from the area.

However, the YPG/PKK has continued to carry out attacks in Tal Abyad and Ras al-Ayn, despite pulling out of areas under a deal reached by Turkey and the US in October 2019.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the EU – has been responsible for the deaths of nearly 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants. The YPG is the PKK’s Syrian offshoot./aa

Muslim charities have sent a letter to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to probe what the charities call unfair tax audits that end up removing their charitable tax status, according to Canadian media reports

A recently-released report from the International Civil Liberties Monitoring Group said the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) actively joins the nation's security agencies to target Muslim charities.

When the organizations lose their charitable status, donors can no longer claim the funds as a tax deduction, causing a drop in contributions.

The letter sent Wednesday is signed by 129 groups, including the National Council of Canadian Muslims, the Edmonton Islamic Centre, the London Muslim Mosque and civil liberty organizations, according to the Globe and Mail newspaper.

Anadolu Agency reported earlier this month that Muslim charities have been singled out for scrutiny by the CRA and charities planned to ask Trudeau to conduct an investigation.

The letter on Wednesday confirmed that Trudeau and some of his Cabinet ministers have been notified of the request.

"The report shows that the Review and Analysis Division (RAD), a little know division of the CRA is targeting Muslim charities for audits, based on prejudiced and unsupported allegation of a risk of terrorist financing," according to the report obtained by Anadolu Agency. "Between 2008 and 2015, 75% of all charities revoked by (CRA) following these secretive audits were Muslim charities, harming the sector and impacting the larger Muslim community in Canada."

In May 2020, the Ottawa Islamic Centre had its charitable status revoked by the CRA because it said mosque speakers had pursued "activities that promote hate and intolerance."

Yet no Muslim charities have been charged with terror financing, the report states.

"Targeting Muslim charities on the basis of terrorist financing suspicions simply because of the religion they uphold is Islamophobic and prejudiced," said the letter.

The report called for a moratorium on the audit of Muslim charities until an investigation is conducted.

The CRA has denied the charge. When contacted about the letter, the Prime Minister's Office directed inquiries to Tax Revenue Minister Diane Lebouthillier.

A spokesperson for Lebouthillier's office said the tax department and the PMO does not "instruct the CRA to begin audits nor do they intervene in audits underway."/aa

KUWAIT: In a historic session that saw punches, quarrels and heated arguments from the start to the end, the National Assembly yesterday passed the state budget for the 2021/2022 fiscal with a KD 12.1 billion deficit. HH the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Sabah and most Cabinet ministers did not enter the chamber after opposition MPs occupied their seats, but they still voted while standing at the chamber’s entrance, a first in Kuwait’s 59 years of democracy.

The budget was passed without any technical debate and without reports by the budgets committee, controlled by opposition lawmakers, in perhaps the shortest session to debate the state budget. The budget was passed with a slim majority with 32 MPs, including 16 Cabinet ministers, in favor, and one against, while 30 opposition lawmakers refused to vote.

Head of the budgets committee MP Bader Al-Mulla asked the speaker how 32 members voted in favor of the budget when seven ministers were outside the chamber. The three-hour session was marred by non-stop shouting and heated arguments between opposition lawmakers and Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanem and a minority of MPs who supported the government.

Two MPs, one from the opposition and another from the pro-government camp, exchanged punches that led to chaos and promoted Ghanem to call off the session prematurely, but after the budget had been approved. Throughout the session, no Cabinet minister spoke and Finance Minister Khalifa Hamada sat on the podium without making any statement.

At one point, angry opposition MPs went up to the podium, but the speaker called the guards, who prevented the lawmakers from approaching the speaker. Opposition MPs arrived early and occupied seats reserved for Cabinet ministers, a tactic they have used in recent weeks to highlight their demand to question the prime minister over a host of issues. But the ministers this time did not boycott the session as they did in three previous sessions, although they remained standing.

At the start, opposition MPs protested that the speaker cannot under the constitution hold a special session in place of the regular session. Ghanem immediately voted on a motion to turn the regular session into a special session amid massive protests by the opposition that his action clearly breached the constitution. But he did not stop. “We have the right to request a special session because all regular sessions have been disrupted,” Ghanem said, referring to opposition tactics. In a special session, the prime minister cannot be questioned.

MP Obaid Al-Wasmi said the session was full of constitutional violations from the beginning to the end, while MP Hasan Jowhar accused the speaker of taking part in a “plot”. MP Mubarak Al-Hajraf accused the prime minister and the speaker of collaborating “to play with the future of the Kuwaiti people”. “The session witnessed a moral, popular and constitutional downfall of the government … This government does not deserve to continue for another day,” Hajraf said.

“The ghosts of the government and the prime minister voted on the budget while standing at the chamber’s gate. This is shameful,” MP Thamer Al-Suwait said. “It is humiliating for Cabinet ministers to stand at the gate. Voting for the budget is a stigma in the face of the government,” MP Abdulkarim Al-Kandari said. “Our problem is not with the budget, it is with the government,” MP Abdulaziz Al-Saqabi said.

Pro-government MPs however justified their support for the government over the need to pass the budget to allow new spending to serve the interests of the Kuwaiti people. They warned that failure to approve the new budget will block fresh spending on essential items like housing, salaries and development projects. The Assembly is scheduled to meet again today to debate the financial status of the country in a closed session. The government will brief MPs on the future generations and general reserve funds and other financial indicators in light of the sharp drop in oil prices./KT

KUWAIT: Kuwait City is the second cheapest city among Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries in terms of cost of living for foreign residents, according to the 2021 Mercer cost of living city index. Kuwait ranks 115 out of 206 cities in this year’s index; down two spots from 2020’s index. Kuwait City ranks second after Doha, which the index ranks as the cheapest GCC city for foreigners at 130 worldwide.

Dubai meanwhile became cheaper for foreigners within a one year’s period according to Mercer, as the index ranks the city in the 41st place, down from 23rd a year ago. Yet, it remains the second most expensive in the Gulf after Riyadh, which ranks 29th on this year’s list, a slight increase from 2020’s list in which it ranked 31st.

After Dubai, Manama is considered the third most expensive GCC city as it is placed 71st on the index. The Omani capital Muscat is the third most affordable in the Gulf, and it became cheaper to live there in the past year as it ranks 108th on this year’s list, a drop from 96th on last year’s list. Globally, the Lebanese capital Beirut overtook Tokyo as the third most expensive city in the world for foreigner, jumping from the 45th place in 2020 while the Japanese capital dropped one place to fourth.

Ashgabat, Turkmenistan (first), Hong Kong (second) and Zurich, Switzerland (fifth) round up the top five. The index’s ranking was based on more than 200 factors that include housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods and entertainment./KT

KUWAIT: Saudi-based Danish Ambassador to Kuwait Ole E Moesby arrived in Kuwait yesterday, where he is set to meet heads of Kuwait’s ministry of foreign affairs, ministry of defense and chamber of commerce, along with members of the business community. He also plans to meet with the Danish military personnel stationed in Kuwait. Moesby is Denmark’s ambassador to Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Yemen and Saudi Arabia.

Moesby will try to convince Kuwait to invest in Denmark’s renewable energy and life science technologies. “I will tell them to invest in long-term sustainable and renewable energies. We are number one in renewable energy. While countries around the world are still deciding their 2030-2035 goals, Denmark has already done the planning.

We are 20 to 30 years in advance. We are developing wind farms, which I believe Kuwait can also do because wind and sunshine are here too. Hydrogen technology could be developed in Kuwait too. If Kuwait wants to become a strong player in the energy field in the future, it should not only concentrate on petroleum and oil, but also develop its renewable energy technology, because that’s the future of the world right now,” he told Kuwait Times.

According to Moesby, Denmark has invested a lot in health. “We are very much into life sciences – it’s in the area of medicine and pharmaceuticals. Our agribusiness companies are now mostly into organic products. We have several high-quality dairy products. We have technology for farming, and encourage Kuwaitis to take advantage of this technology. We can do the design and planning,” he added.

Moesby took pride in the AAA rating granted to Denmark by US credit rating agency Standard & Poor’s. “We are the best country in Europe for doing business. We have a high standard in terms of business. Our interest rate is basically negative, which means I have to pay the bank to take care of my money. In other countries, they are giving interest on the money in the bank. But we are paying them to keep our money. The reason for this is because we have a conducive, reasonable and stable business environment. If you are looking for investment, you go to Denmark,” he said.

Excellent partner
With regards to Denmark-Kuwait bilateral relations, Moesby described Kuwait as an excellent and traditional partner of many years. “We have several products here. You can notice several of our designs and products in hotels, restaurants and many offices. Danes designed the National Assembly, its interior and several more buildings in Kuwait. Also, visit supermarkets and you will find several products from Denmark, from appliances to organic produce and pharmaceuticals. We may not be the biggest importer or exporter, but we have a steady stream of trade with Kuwait,” he said.

The Danish population in Kuwait is around 200, mostly in high-level positions. “There are some Danes married to Kuwaitis, and Danes working in several high-level positions. There are people in the oil, hospitality, pharmaceutical and bakery sectors. Did you know that the first excavation on Failaka Island in Kuwait was headed by a Dane in the 1950s? Many artifacts were uncovered there, and we traced the origins of the first settlement,” the ambassador said.

Moesby also spoke about Denmark’s response and its contribution to the global fight against the coronavirus pandemic. “We managed the COVID-19 pandemic properly and excellently in March 2020. We didn’t know the pandemic will last this long. We are thankful that the number of cases and deaths are now diminishing all over the world. Denmark is now in the final phase before going back to normality by July.

At the moment we are in the last part of this battle, with the number of cases dropping to only 200 per day in a population of 5 million people. We have controlled transmission, while 70 percent of our people have already been vaccinated. The only group remaining are 30-35 years old. We also have no issue with people who don’t want to be vaccinated,” he said.

3 million vaccines
Denmark has also donated 3 million vaccines to WHO’s Covax program, intended for distribution to several developing countries around the world. “Separately, we also delivered 350,000 AstraZeneca vaccines to Kenya. We sent respirators to Ukraine and Nepal and oxygen to India. We are very committed to helping other countries that need us,” Moesby said.

“The most important thing is that we managed to register our people to trace and monitor COVID-19 cases quickly. It helped us a lot in saving elderly people and the vulnerable. We managed to restrict areas of concerns – we isolated and focused our attention on them. There were times too when we had no more beds for sick people,” he recalled.

Denmark is a small country in Europe, but according to Moesby, most of the time, like Kuwait, it plays an important mediatory role in several complex issues. With regards to Denmark’s position on the Middle East conflict, it advocates a two-state solution. “It’s been a long and enduring conflict; like everyone else, we would like to see this end soon. But we want to keep the status quo and convince both sides to return to the negotiating table. Until then, we have to respect the Oslo agreement,” he said./ Kuwait Times
