At least one civilian was killed and two others were injured in a car bombing in northwestern Syria on Sunday, according to local sources.

The explosive-laden vehicle detonated in al-Bab district, which was cleared of terrorists with Turkey's Operation Euphrates Shield in 2017.

Security forces are evaluating the possibility that the YPG/PKK terror group might be responsible for the attack, the sources said.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of nearly 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants. The YPG is the PKK’s Syrian offshoot./aa

Bangladesh’s top diplomat on Sunday warned that the protracted Rohingya crisis would affect the whole South Asian region along with the most affected Bangladesh.

“The long-standing Rohingya crisis in Myanmar has continued to haunt not only Bangladesh but the South Asian region as a whole,” Bangladesh’s Foreign Minister A. K. Abdul Momen said during an international webinar entitled Revisiting Contemporary Peace and Security Challenges in the South Asian Region.

Referring to the broader regional peace and stability, Momen added: “For the greater interest of the persecuted people and the stability of the region, the Rohingya crisis needs to be resolved in a durable manner with utmost priority.”

Bangladesh is currently the most affected country by the Rohingya plight as the South Asian state has been hosting more than 1.1 million members of the persecuted community with a steep socio-economic and ecological cost.

According to Amnesty International, more than 750,000 Rohingya refugees, mostly women, and children fled Myanmar and crossed into Bangladesh after Myanmar forces launched a crackdown on the minority Muslim community in August 2017.

Since Aug. 25, 2017, nearly 24,000 Rohingya Muslims have been killed while more than 34,000 thrown into fires, over 114,000 beaten, as many as 18,000 Rohingya women and girls raped, over 115,000 Rohingya homes burned down, and 113,000 others vandalized by Myanmar’s state forces, according to a report by the Ontario International Development Agency.

“We have seen how an act of mindless persecution in a particular territory could affect the security and stability landscape of a region,” Momen said.

Underlining the Rohingya crisis as no more an internal issue of Myanmar, he said: “Once an internal matter for Myanmar, this has now destabilized the regional tranquility of South and Southeast Asia and triggered a global outcry.”

He criticized the international community for not playing a due role to put pressure on Myanmar to stop the persecution of its own people and developing relations with the Southeast Asian state.

“The strategic location and untapped natural resources of Rakhine state have made Myanmar a strategic partner of the major world and regional powers. They started strengthening political and economic ties with Myanmar in the form of trade, investment, and normalization of diplomatic relations in the hope that this would lead towards democratization of the country,” Momen said.

He urged the international community to be “assertively vocal” against severe restrictions on movement, health care, education, access to the internet, and livelihood opportunities in Rakhine for fostering an environment conducive for voluntary repatriation of Rohingya.

“It is better if the regional leaders understand early that statelessness of a large ethnic group on the face of persecution might turn a volcano open if not treated with promise and action to serve justice,” Momen warned./aa

The discovery of 751 unmarked graves of children at a former Indian residential school in western Canada still resonates and remains on the agenda.

The Indigenous Canadians, known as the First Nation, view the recently discovered graves in the Marieval Indian Residential School in the province of Saskatchewan as concrete evidence of the tragic stories regarding children in residential schools, circulating within the local community for over a century.

Anadolu Agency visited the region for on-site observation and talked to the local community about the unearthing of unmarked graves in the residential schools, which was a shocking incident not only in Canada but around the world.

School located in countryside

The Marieval Indian Residential School is located about 165 kilometers (102.5 miles) east of Regina, capital of Saskatchewan, in an almost desolate region.

Some 4,000 people reportedly live in these lands belonging to Cowessess First Nation. It is extremely difficult to see a mass settlement in this large rural land where one can spot electrical poles and sporadic houses.

While mobile phones hardly operate in the region, one has to travel approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) by car to reach the nearest mass settlement or town to meet their needs such as fuel or grocery shopping.

Gravesites marked with small flags

The site of the Marieval Indian Residential School, which was established by Catholic missionaries in the 1890s and funded by the state, is currently vacant land. It is stated that the school was handed over to the Cowessess First Nation in the 1990s before being demolished.

Every burial in the school site that was found by radars capable of scanning the earth deeply was marked with small colorful flags and solar lights.

A community member appointed by the Cowessess First Nation administration is on guard at the gravesite as the governance of these lands is solely in the hands of the Cowessess First Nation people and the Canadian government does not interfere except providing financial assistance.

Evidence of bad practices against Indigenous people

Media members are not encouraged to visit the gravesite, according to Jonathan Lerat, a council member of the Cowessess First Nation, who instructed the Anadolu Agency crew not to get closer to the site, shoot film or pictures, communicate with locals, or ask them any questions.

An Anadolu Agency correspondent was able to get comments from two locals, one of whom had requested anonymity from the media.

An elderly woman named Ruth, who identified herself as a devout Catholic, argued that she too was a student of the church's boarding schools from 1948 to the mid-1950s and did not experience any misbehavior contrary to allegations. She asserted that most of the children who lost their lives in such places were victims of different diseases.

A local man with traditional clothing, who came to the gravesite to pray and asked to remain anonymous, opined that he thought the church and school operating in the region were destroyed by fire in a bid to destroy evidence.

But the recently discovered gravesites of children were proof of ill practices against his people and the tragedies that had been circulating among locals for a long time, he said.

Both individuals did not want their images to be taken by Anadolu Agency.

Commemoration ceremony

Around the traditional Indigenous tent pitched nearby the gravesite area, a commemoration event was held on the evening of June 26 in memory of the children who lost their lives at the residential schools.

Nearly 200 community members participated in the event where traditional hymns and prayers were performed and they stood in silence for children without tombstones.

Speaking at the ceremony, Cadmus Delorme, the chief of Cowessess First Nation, said the children were forcibly taken from their families, put to church schools, and the Canadian administration was responsible for this.

He added that the new generation should know about that as the Indigenous people need young people to keep their endurance.

Only a few journalists were permitted to observe the ceremony from afar, during which the participants lighted solar lights at the burial site.

What happened?

Delorme announced on June 24 that unmarked gravesites containing the remains of 751 children were found in the site of the Marieval Indian Residential School, which operated until the 1990s.

"This is not a mass gravesite. These are unmarked graves," Delorme had said, adding that the Roman Catholic Church governing the cemetery removed the marking points on the graves in the 1960s.
According to the official Canadian records, the school existed from 1899 to 1997.

On May 29, unmarked graves of 215 children were discovered in a residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia after extensive radar scanning operations launched in 139 schools across the country.

Referring to the children graves, which sparked widespread outrage, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said they were one of the "darkest chapters in Canadian history."

The residential schools, the earliest of which opened in 1840 and the last in 1997, are remembered in history as institutions where more than 150,000 Indigenous children were forcibly taken from their families.

The children were separated from their families and Indigenous cultures to be incorporated into white-dominated communities and the majority of them are said to have suffered from malpractices, hunger, and cold, as well as physical, sexual, and even medical experiments.

In 2008, Canada formed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission to bring light on the tragedy that happened in residential schools.

After hearing from more than 6,000 living victims, the committee ended its investigation in 2015 and produced a 4,000-page report describing the events as "cultural genocide."
While some sources claim that there were 4,200 child fatalities in residential schools, the commission reported that there were 5,995. This is because the deaths were not documented by the church administrations./aa

Hundreds of unmarked graves have been found at a former Indian residential school in western Canada, Cowessess First Nations Chief Cadmus Delorme said Thursday.

About 751 graves were discovered at the Marieval Indian Residential School in the province of Saskatchewan. The school operated from 1899 to 1997.

"This is not a mass grave site. These are unmarked graves," said Delorme at a virtual news conference.

It is the second such discovery in recent weeks, with 215 unmarked children's graves found at another residential school in British Columbia. First Nations children were taken from their families and forced to attend the schools beginning in the 1820s, where officials tried to obliterate their culture.

Delorme said it was not yet known if all the graves are those of only children.

There were 139 residential schools operating across Canada and the last one closed in 1996. About 150,000 First Nations children were put into the schools and at least 4,000 died under sometimes mysterious circumstances. Many were physically, mentally and sexually abused. The schools were operated by various religious groups including the Catholic, Anglican, United and Presbyterian organizations.

Last month, 215 unmarked graves of children were found at a residential school in Kamloops, British Columbia.

Thursday, Federation of Sovereign Indigenous Nations Chief Bobby Cameron called what happened to the children a "crime against humanity" and said many more graves would be found.

"There will be hundreds more unmarked graves and burial sites located across our First Nations land at the sites of former Indian Residential Schools," Cameron said in a prepared statement.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had already said the residential schools represented a "genocide" against the First Nations.

Cameron said many First Nations families in Saskatchewan do not know what happened to their children.

"There are thousands of families across our Treaty territories that have been waiting for their children to come home. Saskatchewan had the highest number of residential schools and highest number of survivors," he said./aa

Religious leaders responsible for running Canada's Indian residential schools should face court action, Canada's minister of northern affairs said Sunday.

"Of course they need to be charged,' said Dan Vandal. "This is the sort of thing you read about in another country, you don't read about this in Canada, but if people are still alive, then we need to do all things necessary to achieve justice, of course, we need to bring charges forward."

Vandal made the remarks on the CTV television program 'Question Period' that aired Sunday.

There were 139 residential schools operating across Canada beginning in the 1890s. They were run by Roman Catholic, Anglican, Methodist, Presbyterian, and United Churches, as well as by the federal government. About 150,000 children attended the schools and the last one closed in 1996.

The head of the Native Women's Association of Canada agreed with Vandal.

"If they have committed a crime, then they need to be held criminally responsible for those actions," said Lynne Groulx. "No one is above the law. Everyone is equal under the law. Even our governments."

Canadians reacted with horror when almost 1,000 unmarked graves were discovered in June at former residential school sites in British Columbia and Saskatchewan. The goal of the schools was to stamp out the native culture and instill a white culture in the children. They were often physically, emotionally and sexually abused and about 4,000 died and were buried, sometimes without markers, and their families were not told what happened to them.

"This was a crime against humanity," said Bobby Cameron, chief of the Sovereign Indigenous Nations and Saskatchewan Regional Chief for the Assembly of First Nations.

The government announced it would distribute C$27 million for aid in the search of graves at other residential school sites. First Nations leaders said the funds were not sufficient and the government left the door open to committing more money.

"We need to work with the chiefs and I think if more money is needed, then we need to find those resources," Vandal said. "So again, this is something that is a very, very sad period in Canada's history, and we need to support Indigenous nations."/aa

At least 272 police officers in Germany are being investigated over their alleged links to the far-right groups or for committing far-right crimes, local media reported on Sunday.

A report by German newspaper Welt am Sonntag said far-right extremism is more widespread in law enforcement agencies across the country than previously thought.

The report was based on the information obtained from the federal government and the state ministries of justice and interior.

It said the German Interior Ministry shared information on disciplinary investigations carried out on 36 police officers in the Federal Police Organization and the Federal Criminal Office, however, states put this number at 236.

While the Saarland state did not share information on the matter, the Welt am Sonntag report said the precise number of suspects is estimated to be higher in Germany as it is not possible to make a full assessment on the issue.

Meanwhile, Roderich Kiesewetter, a lawmaker from the co-ruling Christian Democratic Union Party, urged that every far-right suspect of federal and state police should be followed and he demanded necessary measures to be taken if these are confirmed.

Irene Mihalic, a lawmaker from the Green Party, stressed that these numbers are alarming and many events are still unknown.

Germany has been grappling with right-wing extremism in the ranks of law enforcement.

It was previously reported in Germany that many police officers are being investigated recently over sharing far-right content in chat groups online.

Last year, Germany's Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer also ordered the partial dissolution of elite KSK anti-terror commandos over far-right extremism./aa

Bangladesh on Sunday registered 119 coronavirus-related deaths, the biggest single-day jump since the pandemic hit the country, prompting caution calls from experts as the third wave has unfolded.

The nationwide death toll rose to 14,172 in the south Asian country of 165 million while the death rate further rose to 1.60%, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS).

A further of 5,268 people tested positive in the past 24 hours, taking the caseload to 888,406 with a steady rise in the infection rate of 21.59%, the DGHS said.

Meanwhile, experts have warned that a third wave has already spread in the country, and the deadly virus has begun to peak in some parts of border districts along with India. The Delta variant is dominating new infections as it is two times more transmittable, according to global experts.

Mushtaq Hossain, a virologist and chief advisor at government-run Institute of Epidemiology Disease Control and Research, told Anadolu Agency that a third wave has already unfolded, infections spreading at double pace.

“We have been recording over 20% positivity in overall daily COVID-19 infections for over a week which is among signs of a new wave. We thought we were passing the second wave, but with the new spike in deaths, we have encircled the third wave.”

People started returning from villages following the Muslim religious festival of Eid-al-Fitr. They entered Bangladesh from India despite a border lockdown.

Meanwhile, the government on Sunday issued a circular imposing a three-day lockdown after it reviewed its previous decision to ban public transport to and from the capital Dhaka which prompted thousands of people, particularly low- and temporary-income groups, to leave the city.

Huge rushes were reported at the ferry terminals and exit points of the capital city. People were seen moving to villages taking small vehicles, risking their lives as the government has already restricted long-route public transportation.

“We can’t force those people to stay in Dhaka as they are low- and temporary-income groups and they would not bear the living cost during the lockdown. We have our limitations in the economic arrangement and framework for those people,” the virologist observed.

This rush risks further transmission and spread of the virus across the country, he added.

The government in its new decision said a “harder lockdown” would come into effect from Thursday for a week and it might further extend the lockdown period depending on the COVID-19 situation, according to officials./aa

Iraq's highest judicial body on Sunday rejected a request by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) to establish a special authorized court for trying Daesh suspects.

KRG Justice Minister Farsat Ahmad said in a statement that the Erbil administration had sought the creation of the court to deal with crimes committed by Daesh terrorists, including murder and torture.

While noting that the request had been rejected by the Federal Supreme Court, Ahmad did not provide the reason.

He further noted that the KRG has been trying to document the crimes committed by Daesh terrorists for the past two years.

Ahmad added that it is not possible to object to the high court’s decision but vowed to seek other opportunities to express their views.

On April 28, the KRG parliament approved a draft law on the creation of the special criminal court and it was expected to be established.

Daesh/ISIS terrorists have in recent months escalated their attacks, especially in the area between Kirkuk, Salahuddin and Diyala, known as the Triangle of Death.

In 2017, Iraq declared victory over Daesh/ISIS by reclaiming all territories the terrorist group controlled since the summer of 2014, which was estimated to be about a third of the country’s territory.

The group, however, still maintains sleeper cells in large areas in Iraq and occasionally launches sporadic attacks./aa

In a long corridor, “Israeli” intelligence operatives were standing and clapping sarcastically as jailers were taking handcuffed Mays Abu Ghosh to a military interrogation cell.

“They were mocking me, saying I'd die in the interrogation,” Mays told Anadolu Agency.

Amid her menstrual cycle, Mays was tied to the chair by her hands and ankles and stretched her body into a banana shape for hours, making it impossible to sleep.

“I wasn’t able to walk, the jailers were holding me to the cell,” Mays added.

May's hands were constantly bleeding due to the shackles. She refused to be subjected to another military interrogation session, so the intelligence officer grabbed Mays and slammed her against the wall.

Mays continued: "They didn't provide me with any tampons or undergarments I needed in this delicate period for any woman in the world."

33 days of torture

Gosh, 24, of the Qalandiya refugee camp, is a journalism and media student at Birzeit University who was arrested on Aug. 29, 2019, and then subjected to horrific torture in solitary confinement for 33 days at Al-Maskobya Interrogation Center.

During her confinement at the notorious facility, she lost 12 kilograms (26.5 pounds).

“The officers were constantly trying to convince me that I had gone insane and was trying to kill myself, so they brought social workers, but they were actually other officers,” Mays recounted.

When those officers were in the cell with Mays, she showed them the wounds and bruises she suffered as a result of the abuse she had been subjected to and asked them: "Who wants to kill another person? I'm a student, and you're detaining me."

Mays frequently asked for painkillers to alleviate the pains in her head and muscles, but she was usually denied.

During the interrogation sessions, the officers deliberately forced Mays to hear the screams of detainees subjected to physical torture in military interrogation, while also threatening her that what would happen with her would be even more horrible.

“They threatened me that I'd be out here either dead or paralyzed, and they threatened to rape me too,” she said.

Torturing students

Mays was sentenced to 16 months in prison on charges of participating in illegal student activities.

Birzeit University has long been a center for student activism in the Palestinian territories.

Over the last decade, “Israel” has detained over 414 students and subjected them to interrogation, trials, and administrative detention.

“All over the world, participation in student activities is a right, but here we were arrested for it and subjected to criminal torture in “Israeli” jails,” said Mays.

Most of the students were charged with involvement in student activities of the Islamic bloc, the student arm of the Palestinian resistance group Hamas, and the Democratic Progressive Student Pole, Birzeit University's socialist bloc.

“Israel” has officially declared the two blocs to be "illegal groups."

“The intelligence officer spat at me and told me I deserved to die because of my activities,” Mays recalled.

At the interrogation center, the intelligence officers put psychological pressure on detainees by threatening to demolish their homes and arrest family members. Mays’ home was demolished in 2016 after the Israeli army killed her brother.

“They arrested my young brother to put pressure on me, “

Mays was not allowed to wear a hair scrunchie because the officers were constantly beating, punching, kicking, smacking, and pulling her hair.

“I was tearing the plastic bag they put breakfast food in and using its strips to tie down my hair, but they were taking it from me,” Mays recounted.

Mays was kept in one of the cells for several days with a bug rat that lurked in the sewers and attacked her while she was sleeping, indicating a high risk of infection transmission to Mays.

She was completely isolated for 33 days, unable to communicate with any lawyers or human rights groups. She lived in terrible conditions due to the constant torture she was subjected to, as well as the filthy cell where sewage overflowed, soaking her thin sleeping mattress.

Mays is still suffering from the effects of the torture she endured in the interrogation center./aa

Turkish aerial elements neutralized three PKK terrorists in Gara, northern Iraq, the country’s National Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

In an official statement, the ministry said that as part of Turkish strikes on terror elements in northern Iraq, three terrorists affiliated with the PKK were neutralized in Gara in successful operations by the air force.

The PKK terror group often hides out in northern Iraq, just across Turkey's southern border, to plot terror attacks in Turkey.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the EU – has been responsible for the deaths of at least 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants./aa
