The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has expressed his deep concern over the number of civilian deaths in the Gaza Strip. He finds it shocking and unacceptable and is calling for an immediate ceasefire to protect innocent lives.
Unfathomable Violence in Gaza
The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Türk, has also condemned the level of violence in Gaza. He describes it as "unfathomable" due to the repeated attacks on schools and the transformation of hospitals into war zones.
Attacks on Schools and Hospitals
Guterres was deeply shocked by the recent bombings of two schools in the Gaza Strip. These schools were being used as shelters by people seeking safety. He emphasizes that United Nations buildings should never be violated.
Türk highlights the horrific events that have taken place in Gaza, including the killing of many people in schools that were meant to be safe havens. He also mentions the displacement of hundreds of thousands of people and the fleeing of patients from Al-Shifa Hospital.
Israel's Obligation to Protect Civilians
Türk stresses that Israel has a responsibility to protect civilians, regardless of any warnings. Failure to adhere to these rules may be considered war crimes. He also condemns the Israeli raid on the United Nations Al-Fakhoura School, which resulted in the serious injury or death of many women, children, and men.
Al-Shifa Hospital Under Siege
The World Health Organization has reported that Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza has become a war zone. Despite this, the hospital continues to provide care to patients, including 32 critically ill children. The hospital has been repeatedly bombed and besieged by the Israeli army, claiming it is being used for military purposes.
