WASHINGTON (Reuters) - About 110 million years ago along the shores of an ancient lagoon in what is now northeastern Brazil, a two-legged chicken-sized Cretaceous Period dinosaur made a living hunting insects and perhaps small vertebrates like frogs and lizards.

On the inside, it was ordinary, with a skeleton similar to many small dinosaurs from the preceding Jurassic Period, scientists said on Tuesday. On the outside, it was anything but.

This dinosaur, called Ubirajara jubatus, possessed a mane of hair-like structures while also boasting two utterly unique, stiff, ribbon-like features probably made of keratin - the same substance that makes up hair and fingernails - protruding from its shoulders.

"There are plenty of other strange dinosaurs, but this one is unlike any of them," said paleobiology professor David Martill of the University of Portsmouth in England, who helped lead the study published in the journal Cretaceous Research.

Ubirajara's hair-like structures appear to be a rudimentary form of feathers called protofeathers. This was not actual hair, an exclusively mammalian feature. Many dinosaurs had feathers. In fact, birds evolved from small feathered dinosaurs about 150 million years ago.

"Likely from a distance it looked hairy rather than feathery," Martill said. "Likely it had hair-like protofeathers over much of its body but they are only preserved along its neck, back and arms. The ones on its back are very long and give it a sort of mane that is unique for dinosaurs."

Ubirajara's ribbon-like structures may have been used for display, possibly to attract mates or intimidate adversaries or in inter-male rivalry, Martill added. Such displays often are made by male animals - think of a peacock's elaborate tail feathers - leading Martill to make an "educated guess" that this Ubirajara individual was male.

"The ribbons that seem to come from the shoulders are like nothing I have seen in nature before," Martill said.

While it is impossible to know from the fossil, Martill said Ubirajara may have been colorful.

"I bet it was," he added.

A group of 30 lawmakers urged Facebook Tuesday to remove anti-Muslim content on the social media platform, saying it is "dangerous" and "deadly."

Led by Democratic congresswoman Debbie Dingell, the lawmakers said Facebook has failed to take action "in response to the abuse of your platform to dehumanize Muslims and stoke violence and genocide against Muslims around the world."

"Thus far, Facebook has appeared to lack the will necessary to effectively address hate and violence targeting Muslims," they wrote in a letter to Facebook founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

The lawmakers are seeking six measures that span a variety of actions, including the formation of a working group on anti-Muslim bigotry, greater enforcement actions targeting militias and white supremacists, and an independent review of Facebook's "enabling anti-Muslim violence, genocide and internment."

Scott Simpson, a director for the Muslim Advocates advocacy group, thanked the lawmakers for the letter, which he said would work towards "holding Facebook accountable for the harm it has inflicted on American Muslims here and Muslims abroad."

"Just last week, we learned that not only did the Christchurch shooter use Facebook to livestream his slaughter, he also was a member of multiple anti-Muslim hate groups on the platform. Anti-Muslim hate has consequences and Mark Zuckerberg and Sheryl Sandberg must finally take action to stop it from proliferating on their platform,” he said in a statement./aa

A researcher for the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE) said Tuesday that animals producing red and white meat products have not been found to spread the coronavirus, while that is not the case for species like mink and raccoon dogs.

There have also been some cases of the disease spreading in cats and tigers.

Several studies have been done in laboratories around the world, Dr. Keith Hamilton, head of the OIE Preparedness and Resilience Department researching COVID-19, told journalists.

He spoke at an online news conference organized by the Geneva UN correspondents' association (ACANU).

The OIE is not a United Nations organization but works closely with UN agencies and the World Health Organization.

It has 182 member countries worldwide, which are represented by the national veterinary services in each country.

"The finding of that research was that among food-producing animals, no animals have been highly susceptible to the virus.

"They tried infecting cattle, and they tried infecting poultry, and those animals have not been highly susceptible to the virus, and that includes pigs as well," said Hamilton.

"No one's been able to infect poultry with SARS-CoV-2 virus, and even under experimental conditions. So, there's no evidence that food-producing animals are really susceptible to the virus or that they pose any risks."

He said that the animals shown to be susceptible to the virus are fur-producing species such as mink and raccoon dogs.

"And thankfully, meat-producing animals have not been found to be susceptible to the virus, and that means the meat-producing animals are not a risk for producing or spreading this virus."

Currently, mink infections are significant because they seem to be easily infected by humans.

"Then they're able to infect other mink, and because mink are kept in close proximity to one another, the disease can spread quite quickly," said Hamilton.

"It seems to have been demonstrated that on these mink farms, mink have been able to infect other animals, cats, and possibly, there's concern about wild animals being infected.

"And they've also evidence that humans have been affected by mink. So there's evidence that humans have infected mink.

Hamilton said there are still "many large knowledge gaps on the origin of the virus" and some risks.

"It's important to emphasize that the wildlife trade is very highly complex."

"And although it presents some risks with disease emergence, it also provides many opportunities for many people around the world, in terms of their livelihoods and a source of food," said the researcher./aa

Amid US sanctions against Turkey, an international economist said on Tuesday that Turkey's export sector is its "big strength."

"Turkey has a big strength: its hugely competitive export sector," Robin Brooks, chief economist at the Washington-based Institute of International Finance, tweeted. "Just look at how much Turkey's exports rose pre COVID-19 versus other emerging markets."

He said the Turkish economy's two main vulnerabilities are credit stimulus, which will level up imports, and weak recovery in Europe, which takes nearly 50% share in its total exports.

Turkey's exports reached $135.6 billion in the first 10 months of 2020.

He said there is relief in markets that Turkish lira handled the US sanctions "as well as it has."

"But the big picture remains that Lira has underperformed the rest of emerging markets," Brooks said in another tweet. "Huge opportunity for catch-up, which can happen with just small actions from the great new policy team..."

In November, Turkey replaced its central bank governor, appointed a new finance minister, and increased the key interest rate by 475 basis points to 15%.

The US has imposed sanctions on Turkey for purchasing the Russian S-400 missile defense system./aa

Turkey's state-run aid agency built classrooms and offices for a primary school in eastern Uganda.

Turkey's Ambassador to Uganda Fikret Kerem Alp and Uganda's Parliament Speaker Rebecca Kadaga inaugurated the facility on Tuesday.

The development is in line with Turkey’s agenda of improving the quality of education and the learning environment for African children.

Yahya Acu, country coordinator for the Turkish International Cooperation and Development Agency (TIKA), said their intention is to help children access education in a conducive and secure environment.

“This is one of the investments from the Turkish people and will chiefly benefit students and the school community in learning, teaching and their social lives,” he said.

Kadaga thanked the Turkish people for helping the government achieve their target of improving the quality of education./aa

China is forcing hundreds of thousands of Uighurs and other minorities to pick cotton by hand in the western region of Xinjiang, a key source of the world’s cotton, according to a report by a Washington-based think tank.

Rights activists have estimated that Chinese authorities have detained more than one million Uighurs and other, mostly Muslim, minorities in detention camps in Xinjiang since 2017. Beijing denies that Uighurs’ rights are abused and says re-education centres provide vocational training to help people gain employment, and are necessary to curb extremism.

Now, information from Chinese government documents and state media reports provides evidence that at least half a million people have been forced to pick cotton through a coercive state-mandated labour transfer and poverty alleviation scheme, the Center for Global Policy says.

In 2018, three majority-Uighur areas within Xinjiang alone mobilised at least 570,000 people to pick cotton through the scheme, according to the think tank report published Monday.

It estimates that the total number of people from ethnic minorities sent to pick cotton “likely exceeds that figure by several hundred thousand”.

Cotton pickers are transferred in tightly supervised groups, and on site are watched by government officials and, at least sometimes, by police officers, the report says. Some areas put Uighur children and elderly people into “centralized care” while working-age adults are away picking cotton. Supervisors also administer “political indoctrination sessions” to the workers.

“While not directly related to the campaign of mass internment, these labour transfers can include persons who have been released from internment camps,” says the report, which was written by independent researcher Dr Adrian Zenz, who has studied Beijing’s internment campaign in Xinjiang.

Xinjiang is a major global hub for the cotton industry. It produces 85 percent of China’s and 20 percent of the world’s cotton, and relies heavily on manual labour to do so, particularly for higher quality cotton.

The report recommends that companies be required to thoroughly investigate the role of Chinese cotton in their supply chains, while “governments must also be proactive in related monitoring procedures”.

The main cotton producer in Xinjiang, the paramilitary Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps, has already been called out by the United States for using forced Uighur labour.

Earlier this month, U.S. customs authorities issued an order to block its cotton products from entering the country “based on information that reasonably indicates the use of forced labour”.

At that time, China expressed anger at the order, with foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying saying that workers of all ethnic groups in Xinjiang choose work “according to their own will and sign labour contracts of their own volition”.

“It must be noted that helping people of all ethnic groups find stable employment, and ‘forced labour’, are completely different concepts,” she said.

The Center for Global Policy report said that while the Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps produces a third of the cotton from the region, “it is very likely that a major share of cotton production in Xinjiang is tainted with forced labour”.

The U.S. Congress is already considering legislation that would declare all goods made in Xinjiang the products of forced labour, meaning they would be blocked from entering the country.

His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah and His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah congratulated Al-Ghanim for his election and wishing him success.

Marzouq Al-Ghanim won the presidency of the National Assembly for the sixteenth legislative term. Al-Ghanim got 33 votes, while Badr Al-Hamidi got 28 votes, and 3 invalid papers were recorded.

His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah congratulated MP Marzouq Ali Al-Ghanim for his election as National Assembly Speaker on Tuesday, wishing him success for the service of the nation and citizens to achieve development and prosperity.

Kuwait: (KUNA) -MP Hamad Al-Harshani, chairman of Tuesday’s National Assembly’s first session of the 16th legislative term, expressed admiration and gratitude for His Highness the Amir, wishing him success in Kuwait’s leadership.

The senior legislator has affirmed that achieving inter-GCC reconciliation is a stone’s throw away and has appealed to His Highness the Amir to mercilessly clamp down on corruption and the corrupt to ensure the country’s process of development.

Al-Harshani, who headed the crucial session as the oldest of the MPs, elected in the December 5 parliamentary elections, thanked His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber AlSabah for his gracious attendance.

He also expressed deep gratitude to His Highness the Crown Prince Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who stood on the Amir side during the session, where the attendees wore protective masks and sat with an empty seat between each two, as apart of precautions against the coronavirus.

Al-Harshani, who spoke after Adullah Al-Salem Hall resounded with marathon applause when the Amir finished his speech, recalled the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who prayed for his soul and congratulated the prime minister and members of his newly-formed cabinet.

He also congratulated the MPs who “won the people confidence” in the recent polls. The bespectacled legislator affirmed that the parliamentary elections were transparent and free. “All members of this assembly represent the diverse segments of the Kuwaiti people,” AlHarshani added.

However, he noted that the elections were held amid very hard circumstances, namely the extraordinary conditions warranted by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), hailing the Kuwaiti people who bravely succeeded in coping with the difficulties and casting their ballots without problems.

Al-Harshani applauded the government team, tasked with tackling the coronavirus crisis, noting the transparent and professional approach in this respect. He also voiced gratitude for front-line personnel who took part in the combat against the contagion, to the volunteers and the donors who supported the efforts to “face the grave and unprecedented challenges.”

He expressed hope that the new parliament would meet people’s aspirations, noting that the Kuwait Constitution “affirms necessity of cooperation” between the authorities. Furthermore, he underscored the longtime state approach of cooperation with “our brothers, the member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council, and boosting our external relations with others on the basis of mutual respect and equal treatment.”

Also at the Gulf level, he recalled the reconciliation efforts that had been exerted by the late Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad to tackle the inter-GCC rifts. Bolstering the relations among the GCC countries, particularly at the political and security levels, “has become an utter necessity and Your Highness (addressing the Amir) moves on the same path as your late predecessor. “Today, we are about to reap the fruits of these sincere efforts for bringing everybody back to the fold of unity and Gulf brotherhood, holding to it tightly,” he affirmed.

Noting that the Kuwaiti people pin high hopes on the new assembly, Al-Harshani has acknowledged that Kuwait currently suffers from the depletion of income resources thus there must be “a new era of economic and development reforms.” However, he has stressed that combating corruption has become an absolute necessity amid the current financial and economic circumstances. “Your Highness, we have known you as a fighter of corruption and the corrupt.”
