SAN ANTONIO — Carrol Anderson spent much of his life in southeast Texas, where the most feared natural disasters spin up from the Gulf of Mexico during the warm months of hurricane season. But last week, Anderson, a 75-year-old who breathed with the help of oxygen tanks, knew that a different kind of storm was heading his way.

To prepare, he ordered a fresh supply of oxygen that his stepdaughter said never arrived. There was a spare tank, however, in the pickup outside his one-story brick house in Crosby, Texas, just northeast of Houston.

So when Anderson, an Army veteran who went by Andy, was found dead inside his truck Tuesday, his stepdaughter figured he had gone outside to retrieve it. His main tank, back in the house, runs on electricity, and the power had gone out the night before as a deadly cold descended on much of Texas.

While the final tally could be much higher, Anderson was among at least 58 people who died in storm-affected areas stretching to Ohio, victims of carbon monoxide poisoning, car crashes, drownings, house fires and hypothermia.

In Galveston County, along the Texas Gulf Coast, the authorities said two residents had died from exposure to the cold and one person from possible carbon monoxide poisoning. Four other deaths remained under investigation and were possibly linked to the frigid weather.

County Judge Mark Henry, the county’s top elected official, said he would have evacuated some of his most vulnerable residents before the winter storm had he known that power outages would plunge the county into darkness for a few days. He said the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, which manages the state’s power grid, had warned only of rolling blackouts. Instead, most residents were without power for at least 48 hours.

“We would have been happy to order an evacuation if we’d been told Sunday the power was going to go out and stay out for four days,” he said, noting the county is more accustomed to ordering evacuations before hurricanes.

A spokeswoman for ERCOT said Friday that the surge in demand stressed the power grid, a crisis so dire that the “local utilities were not able to rotate the outages.”

At its height, about 4 million Texans were without power this week as temperatures plummeted to the teens and single digits. About 165,000 remained without electricity on Friday, though millions were still without running water or under notices to boil their tap water.

Still, there were signs of relief. In hard-hit Austin, City Manager Spencer Cronk said Friday that more than 1 million gallons of water would arrive over the next two days. The city plans to set up distribution centers, and Cronk said water would be delivered to the city’s most vulnerable citizens, such as older people and those without homes.

Greg Meszaros, the director of Austin’s water utility, said he expected that most residents would have their water pressure restored over the weekend. Boil water advisories should be lifted sometime next week, he said.

Coming into clearer view were the dimensions of a public health crisis exacerbated by poverty, desperation and, in some cases, a lack of understanding of cold-weather safety. Texas hospitals and health providers saw more than 700 visits related to carbon monoxide poisoning between Monday and Wednesday. Thayer Smith, division chief with the Austin Fire Department, said his city had seen dozens of incidents of toxic exposure from people burning charcoal in their homes.

The weather also hampered the response to the coronavirus pandemic. The White House on Friday said 6 million doses of coronavirus vaccines had been held up because of snowstorms across the country, creating a backlog affecting every state and throwing off the pace of vaccination appointments over the next week.

In Texas, hospitals spent the week grappling with burst pipes, power outages and acute water shortages, making it difficult to care for patients.

In Abilene, authorities said a man died at the Hendrick Medical Center after he was unable to get dialysis treatment at the site. Large amounts of filtered water, in addition to electricity and heat, are required to properly provide care for dialysis patients, and water at the hospital was shut down, said Cande Flores, the Abilene fire chief.

Flores said that at least four people had died in Abilene as a result of the state power grid failure, including a homeless man who died from exposure to the cold, a 60-year-old man who was found dead in his home and an 86-year-old woman whose daughter found her frozen in her backyard.

Elsewhere in the state, a 69-year-old man was found dead inside his home in a rural community south of San Antonio, where he lived alone. He did not have electricity, and the authorities said his bedroom was 35 degrees when they found him.

In Houston, an Ethiopian immigrant died in her idling car, which was parked in her garage, where she sat while charging her phone. The woman, Etenesh Mersha, was talking to a friend when she started to feel tired.

“She tried to drink water,” said Negash Desta, a relative by marriage to Mersha. “After she told her friend she couldn’t talk anymore, there was no response after that.”

The friend tried to call the police in Houston but did not have an address, Desta said. The friend turned to Facebook, where she found Desta. Hours later, he eventually received a message about what had happened and alerted the police. They found an entire family, poisoned.

“When they get in, they found the mother and daughter were just dead and the son and father alive. They had all fainted,” he said, adding that the car had still been running. The daughter, Rakeb Shalemu, was 7 years old.

Mersha’s husband and 8-year-old son were hospitalized. Desta said that the husband has since been released and that the boy, Beimnet Shalemu, was still in the intensive critical unit.

Near Houston in Conroe, Texas, an 11-year-old boy, Cristian Pineda, was found dead in his bed on Monday morning. His family had no power the night before, and the parents, the boy and his siblings had huddled together in one bedroom, Lt. James Kelemen of the Conroe Police Department said Friday.

Like Anderson and Mersha and her family, Cristian was the focus of a hastily assembled GoFundMe page. It requested donations to cover the expenses of his burial in Honduras, where his family is from. It had raised more than $38,000 as of Friday afternoon.

The page showed a picture of a boy in a thin red hoodie, smiling and standing in the snow.

On Tuesday, while Anderson’s wife was mopping up their living room after a frozen pipe burst, he walked to the garage to try to get a generator going, hoping he could help clean up with a Shop-Vac.

His wife would not know until later that he had walked to his truck in search of oxygen, said his stepdaughter, Brandi Campanile. It was 19 degrees. His spare oxygen tank, it would turn out, was empty.

“He was trying to get oxygen and it was just a losing battle,” Campanile said Friday. “Texas is not meant to handle freezing temperatures. It’s not something that happens out here.”

Global electric vehicle (EV) sales in 2020 increased by a record 43% to 3.24 million with Europe and China becoming the biggest markets, according to recent data from EV-volumes.com, a database on global electric vehicle sales.

Despite a 14% contraction in global automotive sales last year due to the economic downturn from the COVID-10 pandemic, International Energy Agency (IEA) data shows that sales of EVs grew.

EV sales boomed from July 2020 onwards despite a slow start in the first half of 2020 compared to the same period of 2019, the IEA data showed.

Europe registered nearly 1.39 million electric vehicles in 2020, marking a massive 137% year-on-year rise, according to EV-volumes.com data. This was due to a combination of new attractive models, incentive boosts by green recovery funds thanks to Europe's carbon emission reduction targets and much-improved availability of electric vehicles.

China followed with 1.33 million electric vehicle sales, indicating a 12% rise compared to the previous year. However, EV sales in the US increased by a meager 4% with 328,000 during the same period, according to the data.

Markets in Japan, Canada and Australia also showed declines in EV sales in 2020, although the EV market was more resilient to the pandemic than the auto markets in general.

- Over 10 million electric vehicles on roads

With the record-breaking increase in electric vehicle sales in 2020, more than 10 million electric cars are now on the roads across the globe, according to the IEA.

The global market share of electric vehicles rose by over 4% in 2020 from its 2.5% level in 2019.

However, the IEA in its analysis inferred that there is still a long way to go reach emissions goals.

"The share of electric cars in global car sales must climb to around 50% by 2030 to be aligned with a pathway to net-zero emissions by 2050," the Agency said.

The main challenges to be faced in the programs for 2021 and beyond will be to continue implementing and tightening the broader regulatory instruments, such as the European Union’s CO2 emissions regulation for cars and vans, China’s mandate or California’s zero-emission vehicle mandate and reinforcing the electric vehicle ecosystem that will determine long-term deployment of electric vehicles, the IEA said.

This year the number of electric vehicle sales worldwide is expected to reach 4.6 million with higher growth in North America and China, EV-volumes.com data showed. This would mark an increase of around 42% compared to the 2020 sales.

The near-term efforts must continue to effectively support electric vehicle competitiveness while gradually phasing out purchase subsidies as sales volumes continue to expand. It is also imperative to adapt these approaches to the COVID-19 crisis response so as to stimulate the automotive sector in agreement with long-term transport decarbonization objectives," it continued./aa

HARARE, Zimbabwe(AA)

Mushroom farming is gaining ground in urban Zimbabwe, with more and more people growing the delicacy in their backyard to earn extra bucks.

Linda Choto, 40, earns up to $400 a week from her mushroom farming business in Harare, capital of the Southern African country.

Choto is among hundreds of city dwellers in Zimbabwe who have of late switched to mushroom farming, turning the wild vegetable into gold. “I make between $200 to $400 a week through my mushroom business depending on the type of mushroom available,” Choto told Anadolu Agency.

‘Ground meat’

With Zimbabwe’s economy in doldrums, many like Choto have become the suppliers of the vegetarian “ground meat,” which has proven popular for many jobless city dwellers in Harare like Givemore Nhari.

“It’s the mushroom that makes us taste meat because the mushroom is affordable, unlike the real meat at the butcher which I last ate on Christmas,” Nhari told Anadolu Agency.

So emerging mushroom farmers in Zimbabwe’s cities help supply the affordable nutritional needs of the majority like Nhari.

Mushroom farming is gaining popularity at a time when the coronavirus pandemic in Zimbabwe has left many people jobless.

Helping the jobless

Like many others, Blessing Munautsi, 61, a resident of Westgate, a low-density suburb in the capital Harare, started mushroom farming after losing her job in 2016 at an industrial firm.

Like Choto, Munautsi is making rich pickings from growing mushrooms.

“It depends on the harvest. I make about 24,000 to 25,000 Zimbabwean dollars per week,” or about $200, Munautsi told Anadolu Agency.

After she was fired from her job, Munautsi said she turned to a friend well versed with growing mushrooms, learning the ropes before moving into the business in the backyard of her rented house.

Choto, who already has an 8-5 p.m. job, started the business in 2017, growing oyster mushrooms. She has already made huge strides, turning herself into a mass grower of the delicacy.

She has captured a huge market for her product, as many like Nhari turn to mushrooms as the only affordable delicacy across Zimbabwe’s cities.

“The business is doing better than I expected, as not everyone can afford meat as a relish in this COVID-19 era, and mushrooms are an affordable alternative, coupled with their nutritional benefits,” Choto said.

“I enjoy this form of smart farming, which requires less time, effort, and space. I’ve also been able to make a reasonable second source of income by growing mushrooms.”

Mushroom market difficulty

But the city farming also carries headaches for growers, because buyers of the delicacy often underprice their product.

In fact, said Choto, “prices in Zimbabwe are not favorable and are determined by the buyer, thereby undermining the farmer.”

“Over the years, as growers, we have tried to set a market price, but the buyers have not been keen to engage with us and understand the process of growing,” Choto said.

Government agricultural officers, like David Charwara, based in Chinhoyi, a town 120 kilometers (74 miles) west of Harare, are skeptical of urban mushroom farming.

“Mushroom is a peculiar crop with distinct growing conditions. Most urban dwellers will be lucky to have a taste of it, as the natural conditions for growing mushroom are a rarity in our towns,” Charwara told Anadolu Agency.

For Charwara, even as many mushroom growers like Choto and Munautsi soldier on with their venture, they face stiff competition from the mushrooms shooting up in the wilderness.

“The number of mushrooms which grows in our bushes each year can’t be quantified,” said Charwara.

Despite all odds, 40-year-old Laura Muzanenhamo in Ruwa, a sprawling suburb in Goromonzi, a town about 35 km (21 mi.) east of Harare, has opted for mushroom farming. She makes about $50 to $70 a week from mushroom sales.

Initially, Muzanenhamo said she was not motivated by a desire to make money “But later I started farming on a commercial scale after realizing its business potential,” she told Anadolu Agency.

COVID woes

But coronavirus has brought challenges that have not spared mushroom farming.

“Mushroom farming as a business in the midst of COVID-19 is quite challenging. Some people don’t want visitors in their homes, posing a challenge for me to deliver the mushroom, and some don’t come to my place to buy the mushrooms because people are afraid to move around. Now we’re in a lockdown. It’s a big challenge,” said Muzanenhamo.

Nevertheless, many like Muzanenhamo have something to smile about.

“A lot has changed for me. I have some money all the time now and my family has this nutritional meal whenever they feel like it,” Muzanenhamo said.

For agricultural officers like Conrad Gogo, based in Marondera, a town in Mashonaland East province, east of the country’s capital Harare, it is not only the love of money that pushed city dwellers to mushroom farming.

Not labor intensive

“People are turning to organic foods for health reasons. Meat is becoming expensive. Mushrooms don’t require large tracts of land. They’re not labor intensive either. And in towns, a market is available,” Gogo told Anadolu Agency.

Even the elite class dwelling in posh suburbs of the capital Harare has scrambled to join the venture.

Irene Mkondo, 66, a retired college lecturer living in Glen Lorne, an affluent northern suburb of Harare, said: “When I retired, I decided to venture into growing oyster mushrooms because I had the time and needed to make money while I was at home.”

She added: “Mushrooms are a high-value crop sought after by big supermarkets, restaurants, and hotels. So this becomes a motivation on its own for urban dwellers to venture into its farming. Mushroom farming needs a small area with a well-built 10x5-meter darkroom, which is easy and cheap to make.”

(Reuters) - Myanmar police arrested a famous actor wanted for supporting opposition to a Feb. 1 coup, his wife said on Sunday, hours after two people were killed when police and soldiers fired at protesters in the second city of Mandalay.

The violence in Mandalay on Saturday was the bloodiest day in more than two weeks of demonstrations in cities and towns across Myanmar demanding an end to military rule and the release from detention of elected leader Aung San Suu Kyi and others.

The demonstrations and a civil disobedience campaign of strikes and disruptions show no sign of dying down with opponents of the military sceptical of an army promise to hold a new election and hand power to the winner.

Facebook on Sunday deleted the military's main page under its standards prohibiting the incitement of violence, the company said, as protesters again began to gather.

The actor, Lu Min, was one of six celebrities who the army said on Wednesday were wanted under an anti-incitement law for encouraging civil servants to join in the protest. The charges can carry a two-year prison sentence.

Lu Min has taken part in several protests in Yangon.

His wife, Khin Sabai Oo, said in a video posted on his Facebook page that police had come to their home in Yangon and taken him away.

"They forced open the door and took him away and didn't tell me where they were taking him. I couldn’t stop them. They didn’t tell me."

Military spokesman Zaw Min Tun, who is also the spokesman for the new military council, has not responded to repeated attempts by Reuters to contact him by telephone for comment.

He told a news conference on Tuesday the army's actions were within the constitution and supported by a majority of the people and he blamed protesters for instigating violence.

An activist group, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners, said on Saturday 569 people have been arrested, charged or sentenced in connection with the coup.

Kuwait's Council of Ministers and health authorities announced Feb. 18 that the government has canceled all National Day and Liberation Day celebrations set for Feb. 25-26. The decision to cancel events related to the holiday observances is a precautionary measure to limit the spread of COVID-19. The 2000-0500 curfew on commercial shops, restaurants, and large gatherings is in force over the holiday period; businesses and individuals found in breach of government-imposed restrictions during the holidays could face imprisonment, fines, or both.

ANKARA

Turkey's traditional cologne exports tripled in 2020 thanks to its signature hand disinfectant, a powerful tool used by many to ward off the threat of coronavirus.

Turkey exported 6.9 million tons of cologne last year, up from 2.4 million in 2019, according to data compiled by Anadolu Agency from the Istanbul Chemical and Chemical Products Exporters' Association (IKMIB).

A deep-rooted custom of Turkish hospitality, cologne (kolonya) gained popularity for its refreshing scent as well as its high alcohol content, which can kill off more than 80% of germs.

The country reaped $28.3 million through cologne exports in 2020, more than three times the $9.1 million it earned in 2019, according to IKMIB data.

Germany, the Netherlands, Iraq, the US, and UK were the top recipient of Turkish traditional cologne exports, with a 60% total share last year.

Turkish cologne exports to Germany skyrocketed 492%, amounting to $7.8 million in 2020, while leaping 491% to the Netherlands, 291% to Iraq, 246% to the UK, and 146% to the US

In Turkish tradition, cologne is offered as a refreshing fragrance in various social situations: after a haircut, on a bus ride, after a trip, when guests arrive, or when visiting a sick friend.

More demand from existing buyers, new markets added

Engin Tuncer, the owner of leading Turkish cologne producer Eyup Sabri Tuncer, said that despite virus-related glitches in logistics and supply chains, production and trading of cologne went on uninterrupted.

Stressing that last year the benefits of hygiene and disinfectant products grew clearer, Tuncer said Turkish cologne producers boosted their presence and recognition abroad.

“During the pandemic, we got great demand for traditional Turkish cologne from new export markets, beside our existing international buyers," said Tuncer.

Tuncer stressed that the century-old firm expanded its production capacity to meet soaring demand, especially for colognes with distinctive citrus scent.

"With the new investments we made during this period, we tripled our output, and our store and internet sales jumped sixfold," he explained.

The company, along with its sub-brands, does exports to nearly 70 countries.

Pointing out how cologne became a strategic tool for warding off the risk of coronavirus, Tuncer said the company added new markets to its export portfolio.

"We saw a huge rise in demand from countries that don’t [traditionally] have the habit of using cologne, such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, and China, where we won a foothold with our personal care products," Tuncer stressed.

The company is set to accelerate investments by boosting its capacity and adding new production lines, he explained.

"I believe that in 2021 we’ll cement our successful results from last year thanks to the cologne-using habit of our target audience abroad," he said

Since emerging in December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has claimed more than 2.52 million lives in 192 countries and regions.

According to figures compiled by the US' Johns Hopkins University, nearly 111 million cases have been reported worldwide, with recoveries now more than 62 million./aa

A municipality in southeastern Turkey will launch courses next month that features six different languages.

The Languages of Civilization courses will be held for Kurdish, Zaza, Ottoman Turkish, Farsi, Arabic and Assyrian languages at the "Language of Civilizations" workshop in Diyarbakir Municipality.

To maintain and improve language proficiency, educational social and cultural activities will be incorporated into the workshop for the language.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, the head of Cultural and Social Affairs at the municipality, Ali Celik, said the workshop is intended to strengthen cultural ties through languages that it sees as wealth.

Working to actualize the project for the past two-and-a-half years, Celik said the group contacted universities and the Ministry of National Education for educational equipment needed for Kurdish, Zaza and Assyrian.

He noted that Kurdish and Arabic should be learned better by getting to know the civilizations peculiar to the country just like Western civilizations learn English and French by getting to know their own.

"If we need to read [Turkish poet, writer and thinker] Fuzuli in order to understand this civilization, we need to read and examine Malaye Jaziri [Kurdish writer, poet and mystic]. For this, we need to learn Kurdish, the language of Malaye Jaziri," Celik said.

He said the main purpose for launching the courses is not only to teach languages but to ensure the emergence of new cultural and artistic works that will serve unity, solidarity and brotherhood among people in the country.

Another official at the Directorate of Culture and Social Affairs from Diyarbakir Municipality, Aziz Altunboga, said registrations will be held virtually.

He said courses are organized according to social distancing and hygiene rules for a maximum of 10 students and classes are made ready in case of high demand for courses that will begin March 5.

"For the first time, we will conduct a course on Assyrian, one of the ancient languages spoken in the region. We will also start our courses on Zaza, which is one of the forgotten languages," he Altunboga./aa

An official at a reception center for asylum seekers in southwest France was fatally stabbed Friday by a male seeking asylum, according to the La Rep de Pyrenees newspaper.

The attack at the Isard Cos association in Pau in Pyrenees-Atlantiques reportedly occurred after the attacker’s refugee status was rejected.

The newspaper said a statement from public prosecutor Cecile Gensac indicated that the accused is a Sudanese, 38, who arrived in the morning to meet the head of the center. He was not staying at the association but had previously been treated at the facility.

The 46-year-old victim was stabbed multiple times in his office with a knife. The fatal blows were to his body and neck.

The accused was convicted twice for violence in 2017, according to prosecutors.

Mayor Francois Bayrou confirmed his asylum application was rejected by the Ofpra, or the French Office for the Protection of Refugees and Stateless Persons, because of time spent in prison.

“It is a terrible drama,” Bayrou told the newspaper. “All the more shocking that the victim was hired to help these refugees.”

The attack shocked authorities and residents in the small commune of Pau.

Municipal councilor Olivier Dartigolles said the attack was appalling because Isard-Cos welcomes refugees and asylum seekers throughout the year.

The 257-bed center provides shelter and support to asylum seekers and helps in resettlement.

Its website said the center welcomes people who have fled their country and left everything behind. “It is important to welcome them in a secure context, because they arrive weakened by their history, their journey into exile and the anxieties they have experienced throughout the procedure.”

Minister of the Interior Gerald Darmanin announced he would visit the association and meet elected officials following the attack./aa

US stock market closed flat on Friday as volatility has declined to calm fears of investors, but two major indexes posted losses for the week.

The Dow Jones ended the day almost unchanged at 31,494, while the S&P 500 was down just 8 points, or 0.2%, to 3,906.

The Nasdaq rose only 9 points, or 0.1%, to 13,874 with Facebook and Amazon losing more than 2% each against pharmaceutical firms Moderna and Novavax gaining over 3%.

The Dow increased 0.1% this week, posting its third consecutive weekly gain. The S&P 500, on the other hand, fell 0.7% for the week to mark its first weekly decline in the month of February. The Nasdaq plummeted 1.6% for the week to end its two-week winning streak.

After rising for three days in a row and worrying investors, the VIX volatility index calmed Friday by declining 2.4% to 21.96. The fear index increased a total 12.6% in previous three days.

It was Bitcoin that made headlines during trading hours as its market capitalization reached $1 trillion before its price climbed to a new record high level over $56,342.

The world's biggest cryptocurrency by market value has now seen its price increase by 94% since Jan. 1 when it was $28,933. It has increased 681% since the beginning of 2020 when it was just $7,208./aa
