The US Treasury Department said Monday it has sanctioned two generals in response to the killing by Myanmar security forces of peaceful protesters.

Those designated are Lieutenant General Moe Myint Tun and General Maung Maung Kyaw, who are members of the State Administrative Council (SAC), which the military established to rule the country after seizing power from the elected government headed by Aung San Suu Kyi.

"We condemn the security forces’ brutal attacks on unarmed protesters which resulted in four deaths and injured over 40 individuals," Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in a statement.

Blinken said the US stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar and warned Myanmar of "further action against those who perpetrate violence and suppress the will of the people."

"We call on the military and police to cease all attacks on peaceful protesters, immediately release all those unjustly detained, stop attacks on and intimidation of journalists and activists, and restore the democratically elected government," said Blinken.

The country has seen large protests since the military declared a state of emergency on Feb. 1./aa

The US surpassed half a million coronavirus-related deaths Monday as the country continues to grapple with the pandemic.

In all, 500,071 deaths were related to COVID-19 complications while more than 28 million cases have been recorded in the country, according to data from Johns Hopkins University.

US President Joe Biden has ordered all US flags in the country lowered to half-staff for five days to commemorate the lives lost to the virus. The flag atop the White House was seen at half-mast late Monday afternoon.

The US has, however, been slowing the virus' march with daily cases and deaths on a gradual decline since hitting all-time highs in early January.

Over 56,000 cases were confirmed Sunday, down dramatically from the nearly 300,000 that were recorded on Jan. 2.

Meanwhile, 1,249 deaths were also recorded on Sunday. While the figure is staggering, it is a far cry from mid-January, when roughly 4,000 fatalities were occurring each day.

The decline comes as the US has distributed over 75 million doses of the two vaccines the Food and Drug Administration has cleared for emergency usage, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. Over 64 million doses have been administered.

California has the highest number of deaths and infections in the country, with the state reporting more than 49,000 fatalities and more than 3.5 million cases.

In an address to the nation Monday evening, Biden called the death toll "a truly grim, heartbreaking milestone.”

"That’s more Americans who have died in one year in this pandemic than in World War One, World War Two, and the Vietnam War combined. That’s more lives lost to this virus than any other nation on Earth," he said.

The president called on all Americans to remain vigilant, stay socially distanced, mask up and get vaccinated.

"We have to fight this together, as one people, as the United States of America. That’s the only way we're going to beat this virus, I promise you," he added./aa

Canada voted Monday to label the Chinese human rights abuse of Uighur Muslims as genocide – a deliberate attempt to obliterate a group of people.

“A genocide is currently being carried out against the Uighurs and other Turkish Muslims,” said the motion that was passed by the Canadian Parliament in 266-0 vote.

The parliament also voted 229-29 to lobby the Olympic committee to move the Olympics if China does not stop the genocide.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had been reluctant to attach the word to the Chinese treatment of the Uighurs but the four opposition political parties outnumbered the minority Liberal government and combined to pass the motion.

The entire Trudeau Cabinet of 35 ministers abstained from the vote on the motion that was put forward by the Conservative Party. However, no Liberals voted against the motion.

The Trudeau government said last week, when media reported the upcoming vote, that it preferred more investigation before using the label and to have ally countries join together for a multilateral front in applying the situation as genocide.

But Canada is certainly not ignoring the Uighur plight, said Finance Minister Marc Garneau.

“We are seriously concerned,” he said Tuesday. “We clearly (have) stated this to the Chinese government.”

The first reports of mistreatment surfaced in 2017 and since then about one million Uighurs have been put in upwards of 400 concentration camps.

The UN and various media outlets have reported on the atrocities, saying the minority Uighurs in the internment camps are subjected to sexual assault, forced sterilization, beatings, and other abuses. About 10 million Uighurs inhabit the Xinjiang province.

At a press conference called by the Conservatives Monday morning before the vote, an Uighur woman who had been hired to teach Chinese at one of the camps in 2017 said she witnessed the abuse first hand – intimidation, rape and other abuses.

“No one should be subjected to such cruelty,” Kalbinur Tursun said through an interpreter.

The Beijing government denies the Uighurs are mistreated. State television shows Uighurs in spotless classrooms, smiling and enjoying their lessons in “re-education centres” where they are taught to forego extremist activities and taught vocations.

The Chinese point to one example of the extremism when in 2014 Uighurs armed with knives killed 31 people at a train station.
But evidence shows that they undergo extensive psychological indoctrination programs aimed at making the Uighurs worship President Xi Jinping and learning communist propaganda. As well, Uighurs are used as cheap labor to produce goods sold in China and internationally.

Before the vote, the human rights organization Justice For All Canada urged its members to contact their local Members of Parliament and encourage them to vote yes.

“It is imperative that our Federal Government acts upon its international legal obligations to prevent persecution and genocide of unrecognized, vulnerable ethnic minorities,” the organization said in a press release, Sunday./aa

The Dow Jones recovered to close Monday with gains, while other major indexes ended the day lower in the US market, as investors are cautious against high volatility.

The blue-chip Dow was up 27 points, or 0.1%, to close at 31,521, with Coca-Cola and IBM rising more than 1% and Walt Disney soaring 4.4%.

The S&P 500, on the other hand, was down 27 points, or 0.7%, to 3,879 and the Nasdaq dived 341 points, or 2,4%, to 13,533 with Tesla plummeting 8.5%, and Zoom Video and Uber falling over 5% each.

After increasing 12.6% for three consecutive days last week, the VIX volatility index increased 6.5% to 23.49. The fear index saw the level of 25.09 at one point -- its highest level since Feb. 3.

While the cryptocurrency market saw major declines, Bitcoin had its largest daily loss since Jan. 27. After hitting a new record high level at $58,321 earlier in the day, Bitcoin fell to as low as $48,383 before climbing back above $53,700 mark around final bell.

Investors on Tuesday will be closely watching the Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell's testimony before the Senate Banking Committee where he will provide comments on overall economic outlook./aa

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen on Monday warned investors about Bitcoin right after the cryptocurrency market has seen major selloffs just days following record-high levels.

"It is a highly speculative asset and you know I think people should be aware it can be extremely volatile and I do worry about potential losses that investors can suffer," Yellen told CNBC at "DealBook" conference of the New York Times.

Yellen's remarks came right after Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies showed massive volatility earlier Monday. After reaching a fresh all-time high level of $58,321 earlier, Bitcoin lost 17% of its value diving to $48,383 before climbing back above $53,350 around 2.08 p.m. EDT (1908 GMT).

"I don’t think that Bitcoin is widely used as a transaction mechanism," Yellen said, despite the fact that the global virtual currency market sees millions of new users every day.

"To the extent it is used, I fear it’s often for illicit finance. It’s an extremely inefficient way of conducting transactions, and the amount of energy that’s consumed in processing those transactions is staggering," she added.

Bitcoin and alternative coins, which are decentralized, can be used for illegal activities; however, coin trading platforms around the world have begun asking their users' identification and other personal information to put transactions into a legal framework.

Despite their rising popularity, mining Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies continues to require computers to use a high amount of energy, which leads to massive electric consumption that leaves a carbon footprint. Mining a single Bitcoin is currently estimated to have a cost of around $9,000./aa

Turkey’s president on Monday criticized the EU’s double standard of supporting Greece on the issue of migrants but not sharing responsibility for 4 million refugees hosted by Turkey.

“While the EU gives Greece €3 billion [$3.65 billion] for 100,000 refugees, it did not shoulder its responsibility for 4 million refugees in Turkey,” said Recep Tayyip Erdogan, speaking at a migration conference at a university in Turkey’s Izmir province.

An amount of €6 billion [$7.3 billion] in support to be allocated to Turkey under a March 2016 agreement is still not fully released, he said.

He added that refugees along the Turkish-Greek border have been openly persecuted by Greek security forces, resulting in shameful scenes.

“Humanity has failed [migrants] not only in the Mediterranean, but also in the Aegean and Meric River,” he said, citing the river along the Turkish-Greek border, stressing that in 2020 alone, the Greek Coast Guard committed 9,000 cases of illegal pushback of asylum seekers in the Aegean Sea.

The world also has no idea where and who kidnapped tens of thousands of Syrian children seeking refuge in Europe who disappeared, he added.

“What happened in Syria showed us that raising the walls, fencing the borders with barbed wire, or even sinking the boats of migrants are not solutions,” he said.

Stressing his country's efforts for refugees and Syrian people, Erdogan said 420,000 refugees from the country have so far returned to the regions that Turkey cleared of terrorists.

Erdogan said that approximately 85% of the world's refugee population is not hosted by wealthy states but by countries which are less developed.

“According to figures from the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, only 39,500 out of 1.4 million refugees waiting to be placed in third countries in the world in 2020 were resettled in 25 Western countries,” he said.

For over 500 years, the Turkish people have welcomed refugees, taking in migrants from various cultures and religions, he said.

“We did not turn down anyone who came to our borders over their ethnic identity, religion, culture, disposition or sect.”

Criticizing US support for the YPG/PKK terrorist group, he said: “They do not care about refugees but still stand with terrorism and terrorists.”

“What kind of allies are these two countries [Turkey and the US] within NATO?”

"Turkey will continue to fight terrorism and terrorists everywhere, and will only open its heart [to those friends] as long as they act as friends," he added.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and the EU -- has been responsible for the deaths of at least 40,000 people, including women, children and infants. The YPG is the PKK’s Syrian branch.

The YPG/PKK has been documented as persecuting Syrians -- including many would-be refugees -- in northern Syria, along Turkey’s southern border.

Turkey hosts nearly 4 million refugees, more than any other country in the world. It has been a key transit point for asylum seekers aiming to cross into Europe to start new lives, especially those fleeing war and persecution.

Under the March 2016 deal, the EU allocated €6 billion to support Syrian migrants in Turkey, but Turkey has complained that the funds were allocated belatedly and incompletely./aa

Spanish police said Monday that they had discovered migrants in Spain’s African port of Melilla hiding in extremely dangerous conditions in a bid to reach mainland Europe.

The police first found 35 people hidden amid trucks, semis, and trash containers just before they were about to embark on a seven-hour journey to mainland Spain on Friday.

During a second sweep, police discovered more people in potentially life-threatening situations.

Four people were found in a container full of sharp, broken glass that was being sent away to recycle.

Another man was found in a sealed plastic bag that was full of fly ash, which can cause serious lung disease when inhaled and is a known carcinogen.

“The police officer who carried out the first rescue saw a motionless human leg, which made him extremely emotional, calling for urgent help from an ambulance thinking that the person had died. Fortunately, after being dug out of the ash, the man regained consciousness and his life was saved,” said a police statement.

Police called it a "rescue," but video footage shows the man covered in ash looking highly agitated when being removed from the bag.

Africa to Europe

So far this year, Spanish police have found 1,781 people in the Port of Melilla hoping to catch a ride from the African continent to Europe. In 2020, the number was 11,669.

There are a variety of ways for people to enter the secure area, say Spanish police, including swimming, hiding in cargo, or sneaking onto moving vehicles and clinging to the undercarriage – an activity known as "risky."

The police statement did not provide more details on the fate of those who were "rescued."

Last year, more than 40,000 refugees and migrants were discovered entering Spain by sea, whereas just over 1,500 entered via Europe’s only land borders with Africa around the Spanish enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla.

Not only are those land borders enclosed with massive fences, but Spain practices express deportations on the vast majority of those who manage to cross those borders illegally.

More than half of all those found arriving irregularly in Spain last year took a dangerous boat journey to the Canary Islands, an Atlantic archipelago off the coast of North Africa.

The UN says 809 people died while trying to reach Spain last year – up 18% from 2019./aa

Bosnian Serb candidate Mladen Grujicic on Monday declared victory in a repeat of local elections in the town of Srebrenica despite a boycott of the vote by Bosnian Muslims.

Elections first held last November in Srebrenica and Doboj, in northern Bosnia-Herzegovina, were repeated Sunday after numerous irregularities were reported in the polls.

The historic city of Srebrenica is seen by some as a flashpoint for ethnic tensions, as in 1995 more than 8,300 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were killed there when Bosnian Serb forces attacked a UN "safe area."

Parties supporting Bosnian Muslim candidate Alija Tabakovic announced that they would boycott the election and apply to the Constitutional Court.

Grujicic won 67.62% of the vote while Tabakovic won 31.70%.

Depressed by the boycott, turnout in the election was at 42.87%.

Representatives of the political parties supporting Tabakovic have called for an election do-over.

In the wake of the Nov. 15 elections, in December special police units carried out an operation in Srebrenica on the grounds of voting irregularities and detained many people.

On Jan. 21, election officials ruled that the majority of voters in Srebrenica had voted with invalid documents and decided to cancel the polls./aa

At least 12 major Japanese companies are mulling to cut their business ties with Chinese firms as the global pressure over allegations of forced labor involving ethnic Uighurs is yielding results.

A Kyodo News investigation found that several companies in Japan are mulling to end their business relations with Chinese companies over the issue, while at least 12 major companies are “ceasing business deals.”

China is accused of persecuting ethnic Uighurs, who are mostly Muslims, in the northwestern Xinjiang region, an issue which has drawn sharp criticism from Western capitals and Muslim leaders. The US and UK have sanctioned and restricted trade with many Chinese companies accused of using Uighur services by coercion.

“Pressure has been mounting on Japanese firms to take action over such human rights abuses in the supply chain,” the report said.

It added that the Japanese government has been “passive in addressing the issue due to fears of provoking China.”

The investigation followed a report last year by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute which found over 80 global companies “directly or indirectly benefiting from the use of Uighur workers outside Xinjiang through abusive labor transfer programs.”

Japanese firms told Kyodo News that they will “cease or consider ceasing business with business partners found to be using forced labor.”

However, many others said they were unable to confirm the charges.

Japan’s Toshiba Corp. has decided to terminate business with its Chinese partner by the end of the year, said Kyodo./aa

Terrorism remains one of the greatest global threats targeting human life, and recently, the PKK terrorist organization murdered 13 innocent lives in northern Iraq, with the world silent again, Turkey's foreign minister said Monday.

"Without international solidarity, and with the current double standards, we cannot eradicate this threat," Mevlut Cavusoglu told the 46th session of the UN Human Rights Council.

"Having lost innocent lives to various terror groups, including the PKK, YPG, Daesh, and FETO, we know well that terror has no specific ideology," he said as one of the high-level speakers this week at the meeting held on Feb. 22-March 23.

Cavusoglu said xenophobia, racism, Islamophobia, and hate speech are rising worldwide, and the COVID-19 pandemic further increases such dangerous trends.

Publications and hate speech against Islam insult nearly 2 billion Muslims around the world, he stressed.

Regarding the fight against the pandemic, he said: "We shall give attention to the needs of vulnerable groups, including women, children, elderly, migrants, refugees, and persons deprived of their liberty."

"Equitable and affordable access to vaccines, medicines, and medical equipment is essential. These are the principles behind our global assistance efforts and our provision of free health care to all."

He noted that Turkey provides free treatment and vaccination for COVID-19 to all, including migrants and refugees, saying the country is assisting 157 countries and 12 international organizations in their efforts against the pandemic.

"In Syria, people continue to suffer from the ongoing military offenses by regime forces and terrorist attacks," Cavusoglu said.

"We contribute directly to the safety and well-being of 5 million civilians in northern Syria," he added.

"Turkey is the only corridor for cross-border humanitarian aid to Syria, and even this corridor is under attack. It is essential to maintain this assistance."

Referring to Syrians under temporary protection in Turkey, he said: "As the largest refugee-hosting country in the world, we uphold our international obligations, as well as the human rights and dignity of the people we are hosting."

The foreign minister said Israel continues to act with "absolute impunity" in the occupied Palestinian territories and that the "inhumane blockade" in Gaza and "expansions of illegal settlements by Israel remains a violation of human rights."

Turkey supports Ukraine's territorial integrity, including Crimea, and it will continue to support Crimean Tartars' aspirations "to live freely and safely in their historical homeland," Cavusoglu also noted.

He added: "Turkey closely follows the human rights situation in the Xinjiang Uighur autonomous region. The findings of the UN and other international reports are cause for concern.

"We share our concerns and expectations on the matter with the Chinese authorities. We expect transparency on this issue while respecting China's sovereignty and territorial integrity."

"We continue to follow the developments regarding the possible visit of the high commissioner's team to the region, and upon China's invitation, we will also send our own national team to visit the region," stressed the foreign minister./aa
