The Federal Reserve lowered its US economic growth forecast and raised its inflation estimate for 2022, according to its projections materials released on Wednesday.

The central bank now expects American economy to grow 1.7% this year, down from its previous projection of 2.8% growth that was made in March.

The personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, the central bank's preferred inflation indicator, is expected to come in at 5.2% in 2022, up from the 4.3% estimate made in March.

Core PCE inflation was also revised up to 4.3% for this year, from 4.1% forecast that was made three months ago.

The Fed anticipates its benchmark interest rate to end this year at 3.4%, an upward revision of 1.5 percentage points from the March estimate of 1.9%, according to the "dot plot" of the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) members’ expectations.

The FOMC then expects the benchmark interest rate to rise to 3.8% in 2023, which is a full percentage point higher than the March estimate of 2.8%.

The new projections came as the Fed raised its benchmark interest rate by 75 basis points to carry the federal funds rate to 1.5%-1.75% range, marking its biggest rate hike in 28 years, in order to tame record-high inflation in the country.

The US annual consumer inflation climbed to 8.6% in May, the highest level in more than 40 years./aa

Russia said Wednesday it could provide safe passage for grain exports from Ukraine but is not responsible for corridors.

"We're not responsible for establishing safe corridors. We said that we could provide safe passage if these corridors are established," Russia's UN Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia told reporters at UN headquarters.

His remarks were in response to an Anadolu Agency reporter's question for comments on Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu's statement that there was no need for demining in the Black Sea for grain exports from Ukraine, safe corridors could be opened and Russia is expected to respond to a UN plan to facilitate the exports.

For Russia to establish the corridors, "it's obvious it's either to demine the territory which was mined by the Ukrainians or to ensure that the passage goes around those mines," said Nebenzia.

Western and Russian officials are warning of a global food crisis because of the war in Ukraine and sanctions on Russia.

Russia and Ukraine, major global grain exporters, last year had a share of approximately 30% of world wheat exports.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has said Moscow is ready for unhindered grain exports, including exports of Ukrainian grain from Black Sea ports, but it requires the lifting of relevant sanctions on Russia./aa

The US Federal Reserve on Wednesday raised its benchmark interest rate by 75 basis points, marking its biggest rate hike in 28 years.

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) said in a statement that it decided to raise the target range for the federal funds rate to 1.5%-1.75% range.

The largest interest rate increase since 1994 was approved by all FOMC members, except for Kansas City Fed President Esther George who voted for a 50 basis point of rate hike.

The FOMC added that it anticipates "ongoing increases in the target range will be appropriate."

"The Committee would be prepared to adjust the stance of monetary policy as appropriate if risks emerge that could impede the attainment of the Committee’s goals," it said.

"The Committee’s assessments will take into account a wide range of information, including readings on public health, labor market conditions, inflation pressures and inflation expectations, and financial and international developments," it added.

The FOMC stressed that it is strongly committed to returning inflation to its 2% objective.

The US annual consumer inflation climbed to 8.6% in May, the highest level in more than 40 years.

Fed Chair Jerome Powell later said the central bank understands the hardship caused by inflation, adding: "We are strongly committed to bring inflation down and moving expeditiously to do so."

"The labor market is extremely tight and inflation is much too high," he told at a post-meeting press conference. "The tightening conditions seen in recent months should continue to tamper growth, and help bring demand into better balance with supply."

Powell said the pace of the rate hikes will depend on the incoming macroeconomic data and the ongoing outlook of the economy.

"Clearly, today's 75 basis points of increase is an unusually large one, and I do not expect moves of this size to be common. From the perspective of today, either a 50 basis point or a 75 basis point increase seems most likely at our next meeting."

Powell underlined that the FOMC will make its interest rate decisions meeting by meeting.

"Economy often evolves in unexpected ways. Inflation is obviously surprised to the upside over the past year, and further surprises could be in store. We need to be nimble ... We are highly attentive to inflation risks and determined to take the measures necessary to restore price stability," he explained.

Türkiye’s National Defense Ministry said Wednesday it has implemented "red line" diplomacy to solve the grain crisis caused by the Russian war on Ukraine.

A "red line" was formed to discuss the issue more closely and bring it to a conclusion, under the leadership of Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar. The Ukrainian and Russian defense ministries will each assign one general who will be in direct contact with Türkiye to solve the problem.

“We have intense negotiation traffic with both Russia and Ukraine. Both sides have some reservations. We are working to eliminate the reservations. We are hopeful,” said Akar.

Akar held separate telephone conversations last week with his Russian and Ukrainian counterparts.

While the negative effect of the situation on countries in different geographies was discussed, a new step was taken toward the solution to the problem.

Akar also underlined the importance of establishing a cease-fire as soon as possible before the humanitarian situation gets worse.

As food-laden ships cannot leave Ukrainian ports, there is a grain crisis around the world. Mines laid around the port make the situation even more difficult.

Up to 25 million tons of grain are blocked in Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently said, adding he was seeking a secure corridor for Ukrainian vessels to ship it out to head off food shortages in some parts of the world./aa

US President Joe Biden urged major oil companies to boost their supply against record gasoline prices and criticized their high-profit margins.

The president urged companies to take "immediate actions" to raise the supply of gasoline, diesel and other oil refined products, in a letter sent Tuesday to ExxonMobil, Chevron, BP, Shell, Marathon Petroleum, Valero Energy and Phillips 66.

"Since the beginning of the year, refiners’ margins for refining gasoline and diesel have tripled, and are currently at their highest levels ever recorded," Biden said, and stressed that there is "an unprecedented disconnect between the price of oil and the price of gas."

"At a time of war, refinery profit margins well above normal being passed directly onto American families are not acceptable," he wrote.

Biden reiterated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is "principally responsible" for rising crude prices in the world and record-high gasoline prices in the US. "But amid a war that has raised gasoline prices more than $1.70 per gallon, historically high refinery profit margins are worsening that pain."

"The lack of refining capacity -- and resulting unprecedented refinery profit margins -- are blunting the impact of the historic actions my Administration has taken to address Vladimir Putin's Price Hike and are driving up costs for consumers," he added.

Amid Russia's war on Ukraine, international oil benchmark Brent crude jumped to $139 in March -- its highest since 2008.

The national average for gasoline in the US climbed above $5 per gallon (3.785 liters) during the weekend and hit an all-time high of $5.016 on Tuesday, according to the American Automobile Association (AAA).

The president emphasized that his administration is ready to use emergency powers to increase refinery capacity and production.

"Your companies need to work with my Administration to bring forward concrete, near-term solutions that address the crisis and respect the critical equities of energy workers and fence-line communities," wrote Biden./aa

Sea turtles along Pakistan’s coast are facing a welter of anthropogenic threats, including habitat degradation, plastic pollution, and entanglement in fishing gears, according to the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

As a result of the construction of huts along beaches in the port city of Karachi, and the southwestern Balochistan province, major nesting grounds of sea turtles are adversely affected, the study said on the eve of World Sea Turtle Day.

Since 2000, World Sea Turtle Day is observed every year on June 16 to raise awareness about the dwindling population of sea turtles and their diminishing habitat.

According to Muhammad Moazzam Khan, the technical adviser to WWF-Pakistan, plastic waste, collapsing huts, and rubble pose a serious threat to nesting females and juveniles along Pakistan's coastal areas.

In Pakistan, sea turtles are known to nest on a number of beaches, including Sandspit, Hawke's Bay, and Cape Monz along the Sindh coast, as well as Taq (Ormara), Astola Island, Gwadar Headland, and Daran along the Balochistan coast.

Thousands of female turtles visit these beaches to nest and lay eggs.

To collect data on the entanglement of turtles, the WWF-Pakistan initiated a study in 2012, which revealed that 30,000 sea turtles were annually caught in tuna gillnet fisheries of the country.

This included roughly 25,500 Olive Ridley and 4,500 Green turtles in the offshore waters of Pakistan.

Entanglement in fishing nets is the most serious threat to marine turtles.

It was estimated that about 3% of entangled turtles were dying due to drowning or mishandling onboard fishing vessels.

Protecting endangered species

To protect the endangered species, the organization has trained some 100 "skippers and crew members" to safely release the entangled sea turtles and developed a modification in the operation of the gillnets.

This, the study said, has reduced the entanglement of sea turtles by 85%.

Pollution is also another major threat to the sea turtle population in Pakistani waters. Popular beaches are littered with garbage, dominated by single-use and micro-plastics.

The study has also reported on the impact of diesel and petrol on the population of turtles, stating that exposure to these fuels results in deformation in hatchlings and so, poses a serious threat to their survival.

Government agencies have taken several steps in recent years for the protection of sea turtles along Pakistan’s coasts.

"Through the efforts of WWF-Pakistan, fisheries-related legislations of both maritime provinces have been amended and sea turtles, as well as freshwater turtles, are declared protected," the study added.

According to Khan, the declaration of Astola Island as a marine protected area, actions taken by the wildlife departments of Sindh and Balochistan, as well as awareness programs initiated by non-governmental wildlife organizations, have collectively increased the turtle population along Pakistani coastal regions.

However, he added that there is a need to declare all turtle beaches along the coast of Sindh and Balochistan marine protected areas.

Rab Nawaz, the senior director of WWF-Pakistan's Conservation Biodiversity, for his part, called for "better protection and conservation" of sea turtles in the country.

He said these unique and iconic animals have been in existence for more than 100 million years but are under "serious" threat.

Human activities such as the destruction of nesting sites and unplanned development, as well as climate change, are pushing turtles closer to extinction, which calls for immediate steps for their conservation, he stressed.

Major species

Experts believe that the South Asian country has lost 25-30% of the nesting ground for Green turtles over the past decade.

Female turtles lay their eggs on beaches between October and February, and the eggs hatch in about 60 days.

Five species of marine turtles are reported from Pakistan, with Green turtles (Chelonia mydas) the most dominant one, while another important sea turtle is the Olive Ridley (Lepidochelys olivacea) which used to nest along the coast of Pakistan.

However, no nest of this turtle species has been reported since 2001, the study said.

The other three species, including loggerhead turtle (Caretta caretta), hawksbill turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), and leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) are reported from Pakistan and only a few authentic records are made by WWF-Pakistan.

Although turtles are not commercially harvested for food in Pakistan, however, poaching of turtle eggs has been reported.

Turtle hatchlings are also illegally removed from their nests and sold in aquarium shops.

"Although the government takes action against poachers, this illegal trade still continues and needs to be curbed," it concluded./agecies

India’s relations with majority-Muslim countries have been strained this month after two officials in Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) made demeaning comments about the prophet Muhammad. Stores in countries such as Kuwait pulled Indian products off their shelves, and protesters continue to call for boycotts of Indian-made goods; more than a dozen governments in majority-Muslim countries and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation condemned the comments. Good. Religious intolerance under Mr. Modi has gone unchallenged long enough.

The backlash produced some modest results. In response, the BJP suspended spokeswoman Nupur Sharma and expelled spokesman Naveen Jindal. The ruling party also issued a statement June 5 denouncing the “insult of any religious personalities of any religion,” stating that the BJP opposes “any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion,” as the party “respects all religions.”

This is not how Mr. Modi or the BJP has governed. India, founded as a secular nation despite its 79 percent Hindu majority and 15 percent Muslim minority, has slid toward Hindu nationalism under BJP rule. Bulldozers have razed houses in majority-Muslim neighborhoods under dubious pretenses, with local officials even boasting of the demolitions. The BJP-run state government of Karnataka banned hijabs in schools, a motion the state court upheld in March. Hate crimes against Indian Muslims and other religious minorities number in the hundreds each year, as local and state BJP officials engage in hate speech themselves. Amid all this, Mr. Modi and the national BJP have been quiet — until now.

Given this history, it seems unlikely the BJP’s nice-sounding statements reflect a sudden concern for religious tolerance. Indeed, two people were killed and dozens more injured as police charged a crowd of protesters last Friday.

That India’s ruling party did anything to condemn religious intolerance probably reflects concern about alienating Middle Eastern states, on which India depends heavily for natural gas, economic cooperation, infrastructure projects, counterterrorism and intelligence. Millions of Indians work and live in the Persian Gulf region, sending home remittances. Mr. Modi wants to make India a leader on the global stage; the recent backlash shows that he and his party might respond when other countries object to rife anti-Muslim sentiment in India, tolerated or encouraged by his party.

The United States should increase the pressure. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said in April that the Biden administration is monitoring human rights abuses in India; this month, he named India as a country with deteriorating religious freedoms. But the White House has been silent as this most recent controversy has unfolded. India could be a pluralistic democracy or a country defined by a dark, intolerant nationalism. The United States should work actively in favor of the former./WP

In the aftermath of recent rhetoric offending Islam and Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) by a Bharatiya Janata party spokesperson, and despite a promising and secular constitution guaranteeing the rights and freedoms of all people regardless of religion, clashes between religions are becoming more overt in India. The current economic and sociopolitical climate, under the governance of rightwing Prime Minister Narendra Modi, forecasts a bleak future ahead for Indian Muslims, as they are already living under grueling circumstances and seen as second-class citizens.

Muslims’ religious rituals and dietary habits are being attacked and even criminalized; women are banned from wearing hijab in schools, and Friday prayer is prohibited in the city of Gurgaon, along with several issues relating to Muslim personal status law. Hindu extremists are also demanding speakers no longer transmit the Muslim call to prayer.

The homes and businesses of Muslim people are being targeted and sabotaged, and their livelihoods threatened. Demands of changing Muslim names of certain cities and roadways, contesting the use of the word “halal”, inflammatory media portrayals of Muslims, as well as Hindutva propaganda alleging that Muslim monuments such as Taj Mahal and Qutab Minar are originally Hindu sites, all contribute to the alienation of the Muslim people.

In addition, journalists and media personnel not adhering to the extremist national policy of Hindutva are persistently being silenced and reprimanded. The response of the Indian government to the recent offensive remarks is seen as a renewal of the image of the country and an attempt to protect its economic interests instead of an actual concrete attempt to better the reality of Muslims in India.

Due to the lack of Muslim political representation or media presence, government bodies are increasingly adopting more anti-Muslim policies. Majoritarian violence is influencing the ebb and flow of the decision-making process as the legislative and executive authorities are taking provocative measures against the Muslim community, including arrests of prominent figures.

On the political front, the Indian Congress Party, which was once on the forefront of Indian independence, is currently in shambles. The party that contributed to the writing of the constitution preformed quite weakly in local and national elections, as it failed to appeal to the masses. Other leftist parties are also restricted to certain states with very limited representation in parliament; therefore, an alternative where political parties answer the pleas of Muslims and repair the systemized political social and economic oppression is unlikely.

Furthermore, many Indian Muslims question the motives and integrity of leftist parties as they either unknowingly or purposely play into rightwing agenda. Despite reports of a number of Muslims subscribing to the rightwing party, a permanent alliance between the two is implausible as the governing party continues to taint the image of Muslim Indians and paint them as successors of violent invaders who killed Hindus and toppled temples, dividing the country.

The image of a peace-loving India that was put in place by Mahatma Gandhi is gradually deteriorating, adversely affecting in the long run hefty economic opportunities in the fields of information technology, imports, exports, health and tourism. Independent journalists are warning of the eruption of a civil war if the government fails to regulate Hindutva, while others are saying India has indeed become a Hindu state. – KUNA

The National Assembly on Tuesday unanimously approved a draft law requiring the government to pay a KD 3,000 grant to all retired Kuwaitis, in a session boycotted by several opposition MPs. All thirty-eight MPs and ministers present during the emergency session voted for the bill that obliges the state-owned Public Institution for Social Security, the agency that looks after pensioners, to pay close to KD 600 million, according to the finance minister.

Finance Minister Abdulwahab Al-Rasheed told the Assembly that payment of the handout will commence immediately after the law becomes effective. The law was co-sponsored by a majority of MPs and the government, so the government is highly expected to sign the law. The draft law also stipulates that at least KD 500 million will be withdrawn from the state budget in favor of the pension agency to help cover what is known as actuarial deficit.

The finance minister said that experts have calculated the actuarial deficit of the agency, its future anticipated shortfall, at KD 24 billion, adding that the government already paid KD 10.9 billion to the body between 2009 and 2016 to cover part of the deficit. But head of the Assembly’s budgets committee MP Adnan Abdulsamad said the minister’s estimates are highly exaggerated, and that the more realistic actuarial deficit is only KD 2 billion based on calculations by the Audit Bureau. The lawmaker called for seeking the opinion of other experts on how to calculate the deficit.

Before approving the bill, the Assembly amended the bill to make the huge transfers under the supervision of the Audit Bureau, the country’s accounting watchdog. Around 12 opposition MPs boycotted the session, saying the move violates the constitution, although they declared their support for the retired people.

The lawmakers then declared an open and indefinite sit-in at the National Assembly to protest what they called “obstructing the application” of the constitution and preventing regular Assembly meetings. The lawmakers have decided to sleep in their offices in the Assembly building. Around 17 opposition MPs joined the protest./AT

The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) issued an urgent order Tuesday preventing the removal of an Iraqi asylum seeker hours before his scheduled deportation from the UK to Rwanda.

Invoking Rule 39 of its Rules of Court, the ECHR indicated to the UK government to not deport the Iraqi national “until three weeks after the delivery of the final domestic decision in his ongoing judicial review proceedings.”

The Court stepped in to block the deportation of the Iraqi after the British High Court rejected his appeal for interim relief to prevent his deportation. He had claimed asylum in the UK on May 17.

Under a controversial asylum partnership agreement between the UK and Rwanda, all asylum seekers whose claims are rejected or deemed inadmissible could be relocated to Rwanda.

The individual, who is reportedly a victim of torture, had claimed his life was in danger in Iraq and had left the country for Türkiye, from where he reached the UK after crossing the English Channel by boat. On May 24, the British authorities rejected his asylum claim as “inadmissible” and served a “notice of intent” to relocate him to Rwanda.

The Court noted the risk to the human rights of the Iraqi national in Rwanda, a country outside the jurisdiction of the European Convention on Human Rights, while granting the interim measure to prevent his removal from the UK until the decision of the domestic courts. The Iraqi national’s judicial review is scheduled in July.

The ECHR is a regional human rights judicial body based in Strasbourg, France, created under the auspices of the Council of Europe.

It has 47 judges to oversee and protect the human rights of people from the 47 member states that have ratified the European Convention of Human Rights./agencies
