The Center for Introducing Islam in Mauritius organized the first Quran memorization competition for the Indian Ocean islands from July 22 to 27, 2024.
The competition included categories for memorizing 5, 15, and 30 juzʼ (parts) of the Quran, with participants aged between 10 and 25 years from seven islands: Mauritius, Maldives, Rodrigues, Réunion, Madagascar, Comoro, and Mayotte.
A judging panel from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Yemen, and Turkey oversaw the competition. The event was attended by 100 guests from the participating islands, and it included a variety of cultural, educational, sports, and tourist activities over ten consecutive days.
In addition to the competition, two training courses were held: the first for teaching tutors the skills of teaching the Quran and its memorization, and the second on the history of Jerusalem.
All activities were broadcast live on Facebook during the competition days and were displayed on a big screen in the center of the capital in Réunion Island to ensure that all interested individuals could benefit, regardless of their beliefs.
The Center for Introducing Islam in Mauritius explained that the goal of these events was to promote a culture of excellence and knowledge of the Quran, foster openness through exposure to different environments, and exchange experiences to build a distinguished generation and future leaders of the Islamic Ummah.
The heads of the delegations agreed to organize such competitions every two years in one of these islands.
