A distinguished leader, who won the respect of the international community and the love of his people, has been summoned to heaven at the great age of 91. It was a sad day for me personally when I heard that the Amir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah had finally lost the long battle against the illness for which he was receiving treatment in the United States of America.

His wisdom, generosity and natural peacemaking abilities will be greatly missed. I would ask his family members and all our Kuwaiti brothers and sisters to accept my heartfelt condolences on their loss. I was privileged to meet him at my hotel in Beirut some years ago and was impressed by his warm yet dignified personality.

Sheikh Sabah was one of the Gulf’s old-school heads of state who felt a strong kinship with his Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) counterparts and worked towards making the GCC a cohesive, unified and influential entity. He was a unifier who always tried to being disputing parties together without taking sides.

Throughout the last half a century when he served as Kuwait’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Prime Minister until he was sworn-in as Amir and Commander of the Armed Forces in 2006, he was always a calming influence during the worst of storms.

On his watch Kuwait adopted a role as mediator between Lebanese factions and Yemeni warring parties, he was instrumental in resolving disputes between Bangladesh and Pakistan, and he tried hard to bring Qatar back into the Gulf fold. His tireless efforts to bring nations together did not escape US President Donald Trump who honored him with the prestigious Legion of Merit for “his tireless mediation of disputes”

The late Amir was also a renowned humanitarian who was highly praised by former US President Jimmy Carter and a succession of United Nations Secretaries General. Syrian refugees have been some of the biggest beneficiaries of his generosity and subsequent to the 2013 public uprisings in Egypt that unseated the Muslim Brotherhood government at a time when Cairo was on its economic knees heading for bankruptcy, Kuwait joined Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain that together came forward with an aid package totaling more than $12bn.

Emirates, especially those of my generation, feel particularly close to the people of Kuwait with whom we shared bread during the 1991 Gulf War and stood shoulder-to-shoulder with Kuwaitis and other coalition partners on the battlefield to defeat Saddam Hussein’s invading army. I was delighted to host Kuwaiti guests in my hotels until they were able to return home. In truth, as a child, I hated being confined in school when I could be racing camels, running with my falcon and dog hunting bustard or wreck diving but I very much appreciated the accomplished teachers that were sent by Kuwait to ensure we had a solid educational grounding. They were inspirational and for that we owe Kuwait a large debt.

Kuwaitis have always put a high value on education. I have many friends from Kuwait who are all well educated, knowledgeable and well spoken. Indeed, they are masters of intelligent, thought-provoking discussions. My wish for them and for all Kuwaitis is that the legacy of Sheikh Sabah will live on for years to come in the hearts and minds of his successors. He has constructed the foundations of a modern, tolerant society, now is the time to build upon the blocks of fairness and justice he laid down.

As I say goodbye to an exceptional human who guided his nation safely through various storms I would also congratulate Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah on his accession and wish him well in his role as Amir. May Allah guide his hands and heart on to a path of peace, justice and prosperity!

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo attacked China's record on religious freedom on Wednesday, during a visit to Rome that has been overshadowed by his criticism of the Vatican for pursuing closer ties with Beijing.

"Nowhere is religious freedom under assault more than in China," Pompeo told a symposium hosted by the U.S. Embassy to the Holy See, saying the Chinese Communist Party was looking to "to snuff out the lamp of freedom ... on a horrifying scale".

Pompeo, an evangelical Christian who has portrayed himself as a champion of religious rights, denounced Beijing's treatment of its Uighur Muslim minority, and said all religious groups faced repression.

"The Chinese Communist Party has battered every religious community in China, Protestant house churches, Tibetan Buddhists, Falun Gong devotees and more. Nor of course have Catholics been spared this wave of repression," he said.

China has consistently defended its human rights record and has denied any mistreatment of Uighurs.

Vatican officials expressed surprise last week when, ahead of his planned visit to Rome, Pompeo published an essay in a conservative Catholic magazine that sharply criticised the Holy See for plans to renew a two-year-old agreement with Beijing.

Pompeo said the deal, which gives the pope some say over the appointment of Chinese bishops, endangers the Vatican's moral authority. Vatican officials say that while the arrangement is not perfect, it is an improvement after decades during which Chinese Catholics who recognise the pope were forced underground.

The administration of President Donald Trump has made its hard line on China a central issue in the campaign for the Nov. 3 presidential election. Trump is also strongly aligned with conservative Protestant and Catholic movements, including some that are openly critical of Pope Francis.

Pompeo is due to hold talks on Thursday with Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the Vatican's top diplomat. Pope Francis saw Pompeo when he came to Italy last year but no such meeting is scheduled this time around.

NEW DELHI

A special court in India on Wednesday acquitted all the 32 surviving accused in the Babri Mosque demolition case.

The verdict in the criminal case related to the Babri Mosque demolition came almost 28 years after it was pulled down by a frenzied mob in the north Indian town of Ayodhya.

Judge SK Yadav, on his last day in office, observed that evidence against the accused is not strong enough and the Babri Mosque demolition incident was not pre-planned.

As many as 32 leaders of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) were charged in the case, including the former Deputy Prime Minister Lal Krishna Advani, and his associates Murli Manohar Joshi, Kalyan Singh, Uma Bharti, as well as Hindu religious leaders Sadhvi Rithambara, Nritya Gopal Das, and Vinay Katiyar.

Last month, the Supreme Court had set Sept. 30 as the deadline to conclude the trial and pronouncing the judgment.

Muslim body to challenge verdict

A representative body for Indian Muslims has opposed the verdict.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency Zafryab Jilani, the spokesperson of All India Muslim Personal Law Board -- a representative body for Indian Muslims -- said: “We are not satisfied with the verdict. It is against both evidence and the law. We will approach the High Court in this case.”

Mohammad Iqbal Ansari, another Babri Masjid litigant while welcoming the decision said that the dispute must end now.

He said, “We should move forward now.”

Babri Mosque razed

The 400-year-old Babri Mosque in the city of Ayodhya in Uttar Pradesh province was razed on Dec. 6, 1992, by a large group of activists belonging to the Hindu nationalist organizations Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), affiliated to Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). They claimed that the mosque stood on the birthplace of deity Ram.

The Supreme Court, which delivered the ownership verdict in November last year, however, disputed that the mosque had been constructed on any demolished temple.

The Babri Mosque was built in 1528 by Mughal military officer Mir Baqi, on the orders of Emperor Babur.

The mosque was targeted after a political rally involving about 150,000 Hindu activists and BJP volunteers, who had gathered at the site of the site turned violent.

A consequent probe into the incident found 68 people responsible, including many senior leaders of the ruling BJP and the VHP, who allegedly delivered provocative speeches inciting the mob to tear down the structure.

Currently, the BJP is in power both at the national level and in the state of Uttar Pradesh./aa

At least 28 years later, a court in northern India acquitted all accused in the demolition of the historic Babri Mosque case. This has come as yet another blow to the Indian Muslim community after Nov. 2019, when the Supreme Court, sidestepped the case about the title suit and handed over the mosque land to Hindus to construct a grant temple in the name of deity Lord Ram.

The mosque was demolished in 1992.

Here is a timeline of the Babri Mosque since the day it was constructed by the then Mughal Emperor Zahir ud-Din Babar in the early 16th century.

1528

Mir Baqi, a military officer of the first Mughal Emperor Zahir ud-Din Muhammad Babur, orders the construction of the mosque in Ayodhya, a city in the Faizabad district of the northern Indian state of Uttar Pradesh.

1853

For the first time, the Hindus claim the site was the birthplace of Lord Rama and that the mosque was constructed after the demolition of a temple. This claim leads to communal riots in the city during the reign of Nawab Wajid Ali Shah of Awadh. A platform known as Ram Chabootra is erected outside the mosque for Hindus to worship.

1856

British annexes the state of Awadh and deposes its ruler, Nawab Wajid Ali Shah.

1859

British build a fence separating the platform from the mosque, with the inner court to be used by Muslims and the outer court by Hindus.

1885

Hindus approach the court to claim the property. Mahant Raghubir Das also asks for the building of a canopy on Ram Chabootra. British district judge rejects the claim.

1949

In dead of night, some Hindus scale the wall and place the idol of Ram inside the mosque. Hindus spread the message that idols “miraculously” appeared inside the mosque. Jawaharlal Nehru, India’s first prime minister, takes a firm stand against the illegal installation of idols, insisting they be removed. Local official K.K.K. Nair (known for Hindu nationalist connections) refuses to carry out orders, claiming that they would lead to communal riots. He instead locks mosque. Hashim Ansari, a local Muslim, approaches court for the removal of idols and restoration of prayers.

1950

Hindu man Gopal Singh Visharad files suit seeking permission for the right to worship the idols installed at “Asthan Janmabhoomi.” The court allows worship and does not remove the idols.

1959

Hindu group Nirmohi Akhara files suit for possession of the site, claiming they are custodians of the spot where Ram was supposedly born.

1961

Sunni Waqfs Board joins the court battle against forceful idol installation and seeks possession of the mosque and adjoining land.

1986

On basis of Hari Shankar Dubey’s plea, the district court orders gate unlocked for the Hindu community.

1989

Deoki Nandan Agarwala, vice president of right-wing Hindu group Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), files suit for title and possession of the land, at the Lucknow bench of Allahabad High Court.

1989

The high court appoints a special bench to hear the dispute.

1989

VHP launches a movement to reclaim the land and birthplace of Lord Ram. Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) -- later India’s ruling party -- lends support, making this a poll plank. VHP puts foundation stone on land adjacent to the mosque.

NEW DELHI

Consumed by hate against Muslims, Balbir Singh was part of the Hindu fanatic mob that demolished the 16th-century Babri Mosque in the Indian city of Ayodhya on Dec. 6, 1992.

He was the first person to reach on top of the central dome, brandishing a hammer in his hand. After pulling down the mosque, he even took away a brick, to keep as a souvenir to placate his rancor and scorn against Muslims.

Soon after the demolition, Balbir along with another kar sevak (Hindu volunteers who demolished mosque) Yogendra Pal went into deep introspection. Six months later, they converted to Islam. Twenty-eight years later, Singh rechristened as Mohammed Amir, has already built 90 mosques. He had vowed to build 100 mosques to atone his participation in the demolition.

Talking to Anadolu Agency, Balbir Singh now Amir, said 28-years ago, he was consumed by hate, when he enthusiastically joined to demolish the mosque.

“I had pledged to build the temple in the name of Lord Ram at the site of Babri Mosque. After realizing blunder, I pledged to wash my sins, by constructing 100 mosques," he said.

Inspired by Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), patron of all Hindu radical outfits, Singh was a member of the political outfit Shiv Sena.

“I used to attend RSS drills and training programs regularly in the city of Panipat in the state of Haryana, adjoining national capital Delhi,” he said. India’s current ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is believed to be the political wing of the RSS.

Recalling his journey, Singh said that he went into self-examination, soon after the demolition. “I came in contact with Maulana Kaleem Siddiqui through Yogendra Pal. His behavior and way of understanding led me to soul-searching. On June 1, 1993, I embraced Islam,” he said.

Siddiqui is an Indian cleric, who runs an Islamic teaching center in Phulat village located in Khatauli tehsil of Muzaffarnagar district of Uttar Pradesh state.

Singh has now migrated to deep south in Hyderabad from the city of Panipat. He claims that over the past 28-years, he has already built or repaired 90 mosques all over India.

Born in a Hindu Rajput (upper caste) family in a small village near Panipat, Singh’s father, a school teacher, was inspired by the philosophy of India’s freedom icon Mahatma Gandhi, known for his theory of nonviolence.

“My father was upset with the bloodshed and large-scale violence, soon after India’s independence and did his best to help the Muslims in the area. He had wished me and my brothers to follow his footsteps,” said Singh.

His family had shifted from the village to the city of Panipat to continue education, where he started attending drills organized by the RSS. He later joined the Shiv Sena. He also started working with his brother in his loom business.

Recalling the day of demolition

Recalling the fateful day of Dec. 6, 1992, Balbir said the Hindu volunteers gathered all over India were afraid that the government may deploy the army to protect the mosque.

“There was no effective security around the mosque and that emboldened us. We were mentally prepared to destroy the mosque,” he said.

Singh said that he was in the first batch of volunteers, who reached the city of Ayodhya, where Babri Mosque was located. “My group reached there on Dec. 1 and I was the first one, who climbed atop the central dome of the mosque, using tools to bring it down,” he narrated.

“Our group from Panipat and the nearby city of Sonipat were the first, who charged towards the mosque using hammers and other tools to tear the dome down. After accomplishing the task, we were accorded hero’s welcome, when we returned to Panipat,” he recalled.

But, when Singh reached home, his family’s reaction shocked him. “They condemned me. All the euphoria evaporated. I realized that I had done the wrong thing. I had taken law in my own hands and violated the Constitution of India,” he added.

“I went into introspection. People thought I have lost mental balance. Finally, I decided to embrace Islam to give me peace of mind. Immediately, I started feeling better, “he said.

Today, Amir (formerly Balbir) is married to a Muslim woman and runs a school to spread Islamic teachings to a wide audience in the city of Hyderabad. He has built 90 mosques so far with his colleague Yogendra Pal.

Singh said that he is ready to face punishment for his involvement in the demolition of the Babri Mosque.

When asked about the Indian Supreme Court verdict in the Babri Mosque case, he said: “Muslims should now move forward and work towards improving the relationship with Hindu brothers. Allah is with us. We should only look to Him for our needs.”/aa
