The body of passing Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Sabah Ahmad Al-Sabah was buried on Wednesday at the Sulaibikhat Cemetery, the largest and main cemetery in Kuwait.
Funeral prayers were performed at Bilal bin Rabah Mosque before the body was carried by close family members for burial.
The body of Sheikh Sabah arrived today after it was transported from the US on a Kuwait Airways plane and was received by his brother, the new leader of Kuwait, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabeh , and several officials and security forces at Kuwait International Airport.
Sheikh Sabah died on Tuesday in the United States, where he had been receiving medical treatment since July after undergoing surgery in Kuwait.
Several roads were closed from 2 p.m. to make way for the funeral procession carrying the late Emir’s body to a mosque for prayers, state news agency KUNA reported.
The body of the late Emir was then buried in a cemetery during a ceremony only open to relatives. The Emir’s grave will be open to the public for visits on Thursday.
Mosques across the country will hold evening prayers for the Sheikh.
