The Conservative Party introduced a motion in the Canadian parliament Thursday to declare the human rights abuses of the minority Uighur Muslims by China as genocide.

The motion was debated and while it has a good chance of passing despite the qualms of the Justin Trudeau government to use the genocide label, the vote on the motion will not take place until Monday.

Michael Chong, the foreign affairs critic for the opposition Conservatives, said there is no doubt the Chinese government actions constitute genocide against the Turkic-speaking Uighurs, although Beijing vehemently denies the mistreatment.

Upward of one million Uighurs are being held by Chinese government in concentration camps where witnesses report they are subjected to sexual violence, "deradicalization", birth limiting measures and are under constant surveillance.

"The evidence is clear," Chong said Thursday. "A genocide is taking place and Canada should not evade its responsibility. We must show leadership. We must take a stand."

The other political parties – the Bloc Quebecois, Green and New Democrats – all spoke in favor of the motion Thursday.

If they combine and join the Conservatives to vote in favor of the motion, it will pass, since Prime Minister Trudeau leads a minority Liberal government.

But while Foreign Affairs Minister Marc Garneau said Thursday that the abuses of the Uighurs are "alarming," he was reluctant for Canada to apply the genocide label without the official support of other countries.

Rather, Garneau said he would like to employ a team of independent investigators, with the backing of other allies, to go to the camps to see the abuses for themselves and report back.

Trudeau himself is on record as calling genocide an "extremely loaded" term.

Despite Trudeau’s words, a House of Commons committee headed by a Liberal has investigated the Uighur situation and said it meets the definition of genocide as stated in the Genocide Convention of 1948./aa

The city of Tripoli in Lebanon is in dire need of financial support as it is in its worst economic crisis that has been aggravated by the coronavirus pandemic.

Local officials are urging the international community for assistance to the northern city that has become the poorest in the Mediterranean after decades of neglect.

Tripoli has the highest poverty rate in Lebanon, according to Tripoli Municipality Council member and head of the Cultural Heritage Committee, Halid Tadmori.

“The poverty rate has now exceeded 70%, while the unemployment rate is more than 60%,” Tadmori told Anadolu Agency. “Primary school dropout rate in the region is over 40%.”

He called on all “brotherly Arab and Muslim countries” to provide assistance on behalf of residents.

“I regret to say that no project has been carried out for the development of Tripoli for decades. The city, which hosts many historical artifacts belonging to the Byzantines, Mamluks and Ottomans, was neglected by the authorities,” said Mayor Riyad Yamak.

“I live in a one-room house with my sick husband and six children. Water dripping from the room ceiling in the winter,” Sare Mohammed Jamal Debbag, a resident, told Anadolu Agency.

“We have no financial means to buy milk or diapers for our baby. Some days we can't find food. I feed my children by dipping the bread distributed by the philanthropists in water,” she said.

The financial crisis was made worse by a massive blast on Aug. 4 that rocked the Beirut Port and killed more than 200 people.

The explosion that caused massive destruction in the capital, came at a time when Lebanon was reeling under a crippling economic crisis, amid a struggle with the coronavirus pandemic.

Lebanon has not yet been able to form a new government, since Hassan Diab's government resigned six days after the catastrophic explosion.

At least 36 people have been killed as much of the US grapples with unsparingly harsh winter weather, according to a report Thursday.

Most of those who have died were killed as a result of traffic accidents as residents attempt to leave their homes to get on roads that are often coated in ice or snow, according to The Associated Press.

The second-largest cause of death has been carbon monoxide poisoning as people struggle to stay warm, particularly in the hard-hit state of Texas where millions have been without power since late Sunday.

Six people have died from direct exposure to frigid conditions, the AP reported.

A house fire in Texas resulted in the loss of three children and a 75-year-old woman in what officials believe was a case of the individuals trying to keep warm after their power went out./aa

Kuwait’s emir issued a decree on Wednesday to postpone parliament meetings for a month starting from Thursday, state-run KUNA reported.

Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah issued the decree based on Article 106 of the constitution, KUNA said without providing further details.

On Jan. 24 the emir reappointed Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khalid Al-Sabah to nominate a new cabinet and the premier had been holding consultations with MPs ahead of doing so.

The head of the European Union delegation to Turkey on Wednesday praised the country’s efforts in the fight against climate change.

Speaking at a conference with the theme “Tackling Climate Change,” which was organized by the Turkish Ministry of Environment and Urbanization and attended by first lady Emine Erdogan, Nikolaus Meyer-Landrut began his address by offering his condolences for the 13 Turkish citizens who were martyred by the PKK terror group in Gara, northern Iraq.

Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar said Sunday that their bodies were found during Operation Claw-Eagle 2, a Turkish counter-terrorism operation in the region.

Meyer said climate change poses a global and severe threat that requires a global response and underlined the importance of the Paris Agreement.

“I hope this agreement will also be approved by Turkey, who is already contributing to the fight against climate change,” he said.

Praising Turkey’s improving performance in waste management, increasing utilization of renewable energy sources and fight against the county's deforestation, Meyer-Landrut stressed that Turkey and the EU, as strong economic partners, have common interests in fighting together against climate change./aa

The BBC has come under heavy criticism following a hostile interview with Zara Mohammed, the new secretary-general of the Muslim Council of Britain (MCB) and the first female head of the organization, with calls for the broadcaster to diversify its editorial and production team and better engage with British Muslims.

In an open letter signed by more than 100 public figures Wednesday, including MPs Sayeeda Warsi, Diane Abbot and Naz Shah as well as comedian Deborah Frances-White, the BBC was accused of re-enforcing dangerous and damaging stereotypes of British Muslim women and of Islam in general.

Mohammed was interviewed on Feb. 4 by BBC Radio 4’s Woman Hour program with Emma Barnett, who repeatedly asked Mohammed how many female imams there were in the UK and interrupted when she replied.

“Despite Mohammed’s repeated claims that religious adjudication was not within the parameters of her role leading a civil society organization, Barnett asked the question about female imams four times, each time interrupting Mohammed’s answer,” the statement read.

“The framing of the interview and clipping up of the ‘female imam’ segment for social media mirrored the style and tone of an accountability interview with a politician, rather than authentically recognizing and engaging in what this represented for British Muslim women,” the letter added.

The letter also accused the production and editorial team of lacking “religious literacy” after making a false comparison and equivalence of imams to rabbis and priests and reminding the organization that the concept of a clergy does not exist in Islam.

The public figures also brought to attention how often Muslim voices and opinions are underrepresented on the national broadcaster and have called on the BBC to issue a public statement making clear its recommitment to engaging with Muslim women and especially those from marginalized communities.

The open letter was organized by authors Yassmin Abdel-Magied and Mariam Khan, who also noted that there is a wider cultural problem with the BBC and the general media in how Muslims are portrayed and the negative effects it has on Muslim communities across the UK.

“This is a crucial moment in which the BBC can choose to turn its back on the Muslim community or engage in making a change and acknowledging it’s very real-life impact on the lives of Muslims in the UK,” Khan said in the letter.

Following the interview, the writers have been told by fellow Muslim women they are reconsidering whether to take part in any interviews given by Woman’s Hour, as they feel that issues important to them will not be taken seriously or will otherwise be misrepresented in the media.

Zara Mohammed was elected secretary-general of the MCB in January. She has in the past served as an assistant secretary-general for the MCB and holds a master’s degree in Human Rights Law. She is also a training and development consultant.

The Muslim Council of Britain is the UK’s largest democratic Muslim umbrella organization, representing mosques, schools and institutions from all over the country.

Anadolu Agency approached the MCB for comment but has not received a response./aa

Turkey’s parliament will form a subcommittee to probe rising levels of racism and Islamophobia in European countries, the head of its human rights committee said Wednesday.

"The racism in Europe is culturally transforming into Islamophobia, which expresses the fear and hatred of Islam and Muslims," Hakan Cavusoglu said in a statement.

The Council of Europe, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and European Union have not been able to form a clear position on anti-Islamism, Cavusoglu said.

He said European countries have difficulty seeing Islamophobia as a form of discrimination.

"The subcommittee will make onsite examinations in European countries on the subject. It will hold talks with international institutions and organizations on this issue,” he added.

The subcommittee will start its work after the member lawmakers have been assigned by the human rights committee./aa

TRENTON, Canada

The leader of a Canadian far-right political party was charged with promoting hatred by posting an anti-Semitic video online, police said in a press release Wednesday.

“Beware the Parasitic Tribe” was allegedly posted to YouTube by Travis Patron, 29, head of the Canadian Nationalist Party, said the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the province of Saskatchewan.

The charge follows an almost two-year investigation which began in June 2019 after police were notified of the video by the Canadian Anti-Hate Network.

The YouTube video said that “inside manipulators” wormed their way into media and Canada’s central bank for nefarious purposes.

However, police said it is not the only anti-Jewish video allegedly posted by Patron. Police were made aware of four others posted between April and June of 2020. The Friends of the Simon Wiesenthal Center, a non-profit human rights organization dedicated to hunting down Nazis and fighting anti-Semitism, was pleased with the arrest and charge.

The organization noted the Nationalist Party had also posted on its social media pages that Jews were “liars and deceivers.”

"Canadians are one step closer to seeing justice being served,” said Michael Levitt, the organization’s president and chief executive officer, in a press release Wednesday.

“This is an especially big win for the Jewish community, which has year after year remained the most victimized group when it comes to hate crimes and the target of a growing number of hate groups in Canada and around the world. It is unacceptable for any individual, let alone the leader of a so-called political party, to promote such hatred against a minority group and call for their removal from a country."

The Nationalist Party, which was registered as an official political party with Elections Canada in 2019 and participated in the federal election the same year drawing less than 300 votes, is headquartered in the Canadian western province of Saskatchewan.

Patron was to appear in court later Wednesday./aa

Seven people have been shot near the Olney Transportation Center in the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, police said Wednesday.

A suspect has been taken into custody, and two firearms have been recovered from the scene, Police Commissioner Danielle Outlaw told reporters.

"We're still trying to connect all the dots and determine exactly if that person had any involvement in the shooting, or whether or not those guns were utilized in that shooting," she said.

An additional shooter may have been involved, and police are working to determine the "extent" of involvement of the individual who was taken into custody, Outlaw said.

The victims range in age from 17 to 70, and Outlaw said "several have sustained gunshot wounds, non-life-threatening injuries." One victim, whom authorities have not yet been able to identify, is in critical condition.

Roughly 18 bullet casings have been recovered, according to police./aa

Millions of Texans are continue to lack power Wednesday amid frigid and icy conditions as yet another snow storm nears the US state.

A previous cold front that brought an initial round of snow and ice storms knocked power offline in the state beginning over the weekend. About 2.7 million households continue to lack electricity, according to the state's power grid manager.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott has declared a state of emergency in every county in the state.

The National Weather Service is predicting that as much as half an inch (12.5 mm) of ice could accumulate late Wednesday evening in a region that spans eastern Texas, and flows further east into northern Louisiana and western Mississippi. An additional 1 to 2 inches (25-50 mm) of snow is possible in parts of Texas through Friday, the service said on Twitter.

A winter storm warning remains in effect for all but Texas' Gulf Coast counties.

The storm comes as record low temperatures continue to be recorded in several cities across the state, with temperatures not expected to rise above freezing in wide swathes of the state until the weekend.

At least 25 people have died in the Midwest and south as the regions cope with extreme weather, most of whom have died in Texas, according to NBC News.

Causes of death have included carbon monoxide poisoning, car accidents and fires started by people in their fireplaces that burned out of control./aa
