At least 36 people have been killed as much of the US grapples with unsparingly harsh winter weather, according to a report Thursday.
Most of those who have died were killed as a result of traffic accidents as residents attempt to leave their homes to get on roads that are often coated in ice or snow, according to The Associated Press.
The second-largest cause of death has been carbon monoxide poisoning as people struggle to stay warm, particularly in the hard-hit state of Texas where millions have been without power since late Sunday.
Six people have died from direct exposure to frigid conditions, the AP reported.
A house fire in Texas resulted in the loss of three children and a 75-year-old woman in what officials believe was a case of the individuals trying to keep warm after their power went out./aa
