Kuwait’s parliament speaker Marzouq Al Ghanim will be referred to the Public Prosecution for breaking COVID-19 rules on social gatherings.

Al Ghanim admitted that he attended social gatherings after he was reelected as speaker of the National Assembly for a second mandate.

The parliamentary speaker would face legal action after flouting coronavirus-related precautionary rules on social gatherings.

“I was just informed that I will be referred to the Public Prosecution for some gatherings and parties that were held after election results were announced,” Al Ghanim said in a statement.

“I will be the first to be present in court and to ask for the removal of parliamentary immunity to demonstrate that Kuwait is a nation built on the constitution and governed by the law and that nobody is above the law,” he said.

Al Ghanim made the statement although he has yet to receive an official notification from the prosecution.

Al Ghanim admitted that he held a celebratory gathering at his Diwan in violation of the pandemic-related restrictions.
