Question: Our brother observes that some Muslims participate with Christians in the Christmas celebrations, and requests guidance on this matter.
Answer: It is not permissible for a Muslim, whether male or female, to participate in the holidays of Christians, Jews, or any other non-believers. These celebrations should be avoided because, as the Prophet (ﷺ) said, “He who imitates any people (in their actions) is considered to be one of them.” The Prophet (ﷺ) warned us against imitating the non-believers and adopting their behaviors.
Believers must be cautious and refrain from contributing to these celebrations in any manner, as these holidays contradict the Sharia of Allah and are celebrated by the enemies of Allah. Thus, it is not permissible to partake in them or to help in any way, whether by providing tea, coffee, or any other items, such as pots.
Allah also says, “And cooperate in righteousness and piety, but do not cooperate in sin and aggression.” (Al-Ma'idah: 2) Participating in the holidays of non-believers is a form of cooperating in sin and aggression. Therefore, it is obligatory upon every Muslim to avoid this. An intelligent person should not be misled by the actions of others. One must adhere to Islamic Sharia and follow the commands of Allah and His Messenger (ﷺ), and not be swayed by the behavior of the majority, as most people do not adhere to what Allah has prescribed. As Allah says in His Noble Book, “And if you obey most of those upon the earth, they will mislead you from the way of Allah.” (Al-An'am: 116), and “And most of the people, although you strive [for it], are not believers.” (Yusuf: 103) Customs that contradict Islamic Sharia should not be adopted, even if they are practiced by many people.
A believer should weigh their actions and words, and the actions and words of others, against the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (ﷺ). What aligns with them is acceptable, even if people abandon it, and what contradicts them is rejected, even if people practice it. May Allah grant everyone success and guidance.
