Yemen has witnessed a widespread military escalation across several governorates since September 3, 2026, following an attack by the Houthi group targeting the strategic port city of Mocha and the Bab Al-Mandab Strait. The Houthis are seeking to advance toward the hills overlooking Mocha and the strategically important Bab al-Mandab Strait. Mocha and its surrounding areas have come under ballistic missile and drone attacks.

Taiz: The Opening Front of the Battles

Al-Kadha and Maqbana: The two areas, located west of Taiz, have witnessed fierce clashes amid Houthi attempts to cut off the vital road linking Taiz city with Mocha.

Al-Barh, Al-Dhabab, and Hadhran: These fronts have seen ground confrontations and exchanges of artillery fire as government forces attempt to repel Houthi infiltration operations.

The escalation has effectively ended the relative calm that had prevailed since 2022.

The Houthis have managed to advance into several positions and villages, prompting the Yemeni Armed Forces to announce the launch of large-scale military operations and the opening of simultaneous fronts in Al-Jawf, Al-Bayda, Taiz, and Lahj governorates.

The escalation has also been accompanied by the increased use of aircraft and drones, which have played a growing role in military operations and combat readiness in recent weeks, resulting in significant changes on the ground.

Military and Field Developments Across Yemen

1. Al-Jawf: Decisive Battles and the Recapture of Al-Labanat Military Camp

Launch of a large-scale operation: Government forces announced the beginning of a military operation aimed at regaining control of all districts held by the Houthi group.

Capture of Al-Labanat Camp: Yemeni Armed Forces stormed the strategically important Al-Labanat military camp in eastern Al-Jawf and announced that they had taken full control of it.

Advance toward the governorate capital: Government forces are currently advancing toward Al-Hazm, the governorate capital, after securing the Al-Farid area. They are also continuing their advance in Al-Masaifah, near Al-Hazm.

Brigadier General Abdullah Daris, commander of the Second Brigade of the Emergency Forces, confirmed significant advances in eastern Al-Jawf, noting that government forces were only hours away from retaking these areas.

2. Al-Bayda: Military Operation Launched Amid Territorial Gains

Operation to liberate Al-Bayda: The Yemeni Armed Forces launched a military operation toward the governorate with the aim of liberating it from Houthi control.

Advances on the Al-Zahir front: Government forces announced that they had taken control of several strategic positions, including Haid Al-Khazzan and Al-Fulaihan, amid what they described as rapidly deteriorating Houthi defenses.

Intensive air support: Government aircraft carried out 13 airstrikes targeting Houthi positions and gatherings across the governorate.

3. Taiz and the Western Coast: Fierce Clashes and Preemptive Airstrikes

Fighting on the Al-Barh and Sharajah fronts: Government forces have been engaged in fierce clashes using various types of weapons on the Al-Barh front for five consecutive days. Fighting has also erupted around the strategically important Sharajah checkpoint, which connects the western coastal districts with Taiz city.

Recapture of Mount Al-Korah: Government forces regained control of the strategic Mount Al-Korah in the Al-Kadha area, located between Al-Ma'afer and Al-Wazi'iyah districts in western rural Taiz, after it had previously fallen under Houthi control.

Destruction of Houthi reinforcements: Aircraft launched airstrikes targeting a Houthi military convoy consisting of more than 21 military vehicles and armored units at the Shar'ab and Al-Rubai'i junction. The convoy was reportedly heading toward the Al-Barh, Maqbana, and northwestern fronts.

In addition, three Houthi military formations were destroyed on the Al-Barh front in drone strikes.

4. Marib and Lahj: Foiling Infiltration Attempts and Targeted Strikes

Lahj – Qurain/Al-Musaymir front: Forces from the First Hazm Brigade foiled a Houthi infiltration attempt north of Al-Musaymir district, inflicting casualties and material losses on the attackers.

Marib: The Yemeni Army announced that it had directly hit an armored military vehicle belonging to the Houthi group. Media outlets affiliated with the Seventh Military Region also released footage showing Houthi fighters being targeted inside their tent by a drone.

Public Mobilization and National Support

On the social and popular fronts, various initiatives have emerged to support and assist the Yemeni Armed Forces, reflecting growing public solidarity with troops deployed along the battlefronts.

The role of Yemeni women: Yemeni women have launched grassroots initiatives to support government forces, including selling their gold and preparing cakes and food supplies for soldiers stationed on the front lines.

Student mobilization: University students have responded to developments on the battlefronts and the renewed military momentum in Taiz, Al-Jawf, and Hays. Large numbers have taken to the streets to express their support for the army amid the intensifying fighting in Taiz.

Political and International Positions and the Humanitarian Situation

Yemeni Defense Minister Taher Al-Aqili affirmed that the Armed Forces remain committed to restoring state institutions and establishing security and stability throughout the country.

A spokesperson for the Armed Forces also reported significant military gains and steady advances on the Al-Jawf and Al-Bayda fronts.

Meanwhile, the UN Special Envoy for Yemen called on all parties to halt hostilities and exercise maximum restraint, warning of the potentially devastating consequences for civilians.

Urgent humanitarian needs: Displaced families are facing severe shortages of essential supplies and significant challenges in accessing shelter, food, safe drinking water, and protection services.

Is the End of the War Finally in Sight?

Developments on the ground point to significant changes in the military balance in favor of government forces across several strategic fronts. The widespread escalation has once again brought Yemen to the forefront of regional military developments.

Yet one crucial question remains: Is the war that has ravaged Yemen since 2014 finally approaching its end?
