According to statistics, 20% of people in Turkey struggle with obesity, and estimates say that two out of three people in the world will have obesity problems in the near future. So, obesity is an imminent and rising concern for people across the globe, but what are the causes and factors of this health condition, which is listed by the World Health Organization (WHO) as one of the most important health problems of the 21st century?

Obesity is defined as increased abnormal fat accumulation that endangers human health in the short and long term. Many factors such as malnutrition and inactivity, metabolic differences and genetic characteristics play a role in the development of obesity.

“The other important factor that is overlooked is that the changes in our behavior caused by environmental factors can be a driving force for obesity,” Ezgi Hazal Çelik, Nutrition and Diet Specialist at Acıbadem Bakırköy Hospital, said.

“Studies show that people with obesity problems are more exposed to environments that trigger malnutrition and decrease their physical activity levels, compared to normal-weight individuals. Certain environmental conditions increase the consumption of empty calories, that is, foods with low nutritional value and high-calorie content, and lead to inactivity," she said.

"As a result, obesity may develop due to low energy use despite high energy intake. For this reason, environmental change should be added to changeable risk factors such as changing nutritional habits and increasing the level of physical activity.” So, which environmental factors affect weight gain? Çelik talked about six environmental factors that increase the risk of obesity and made important suggestions and warnings.

Availability of high-calorie foods

Fast food, processed foods, packaged products and carbonated-sugar drinks are among the top negative factors that boost the weight gain process. “In today's conditions, it is quite easy to reach delicious foods like these products, which are high in energy density but have no nutritional value. In addition, the prices of such products are cheaper than many healthy foods. All these result in excessive consumption of these foods that cause weight gain,” said Çelik.

“Processed foods and fast food meals that are poor in nutrients, because they contain high fat, refined carbohydrates and preservatives, cause hunger in a short time, increasing the number of meals and calories consumed during the day. As a result, weight gain is inevitable. Therefore, you can include these products in a healthy eating plan, only if they are sporadic,” she added.

Large portions

Due to the fact that eating has become a social occasion and that people can't find time to cook at home because of their busy work schedule, most eat out or order food from outside. However, according to statistics in the last 50 years, the portions, especially in fast food outlets, have increased up to five times.

“For customer satisfaction, larger portion sizes and flamboyant presentations can increase the number of calories consumed by triggering the behavior of continuing to eat despite the feeling of satiety,” Çelik warned and listed a few recommendations on the subject.

“Prefer small portions in the menus you eat out or order from. Avoid consuming sauce, potatoes and carbonated drinks like Coke on the menu. If you can't change the portions, eat healthy options such as salads, greens and ayran, along with lightly sauced, grilled or baked main dishes, and do not add any salt as long as possible."

Technological pitfalls

With the advancement of technology, communication tools such as television, computers, tablets and phones have turned into tools through which we can access everything in terms of information, business and entertainment. For this reason, we can now spend long hours in front of screens.

On top of that, the pandemic has led us to exceed even the increased screen time we used to spend due to the transition to working from home and the distance education system. Çelik stated that this situation led to the habit of eating snacks in addition to inactivity.

“In order to prevent the risk of obesity, you can reduce screen usage time, and in cases where the time you spend in front of the screen increases due to work or education, get up every 30 minutes and do small exercises or stretching."

"If you want to consume something while working, watching movies or playing games, choosing healthy alternatives such as unsweetened herbal tea, unsweetened coffee, raw nuts or a portion of fresh fruit (that) will prevent the problem of getting hungry quickly and high-calorie intake after eating high-sugar and fatty foods.”

Insufficient green space

Even if you reduce your daily energy intake, not having a physically active life can increase your risk of gaining weight. The lack of walking areas, parks and areas where you can do physical activity in your environment, for this reason, plays a major role in obesity. Spending time on bicycle and walking paths or in parks, playgrounds and green areas helps to keep the body mass index at certain intervals.

In order to fight off inactivity, make a habit of taking a brisk walk for 30 to 45 minutes at least three or four days a week, in walking areas close to your home, in parks, and if appropriate, around the residential complex or apartment where you live. If there are no areas like this in your neighborhood, you can also benefit from online exercises to do at home.

Placement of food

The location of the food is also one of the important environmental factors that increase the risk of obesity. For example, when you are thirsty and go to the kitchen to drink a glass of water, you may notice the chocolate on the counter and find yourself eating chocolate out of nowhere.

“Of course this isn't the case for everyone, but we prefer products mostly because of where they're located. That's why it's very important to put the healthiest option in an easily accessible spot," said Çelik.

She added that one should remove refined sugar and high-fat foods that cause weight gain when consumed frequently, from your shopping list, and if this is not possible, avoid placing them in areas one can easily reach and where one will be constantly exposed, in order to better manage one's weight control.

Ads

Advertisements about sugary cereals, drinks and sugar, in general, appear not only on television but in every aspect of our daily lives. In addition to foods that are low in fiber and vitamins, high in fat, sugar and salt, and foods with high animal fat content have started to gain more and more of a foothold in our lives thanks to effective advertisements.

Making more conscious food choices, including these foods less frequently and in certain amounts in a healthy eating plan are important steps for weight control.

Japanese electronics contractor Kaga Electronics is going to build a factory in Turkey, shifting a portion of the production from China and Southeast Asia, according to a report by Nikkei Asia.

The company already manufactures parts for air conditioners on a contract basis in Turkey’s northwestern Düzce province, but, according to the report, this facility is running at full capacity.

The new plant, which is expected to go online in 2022, will manufacture printed circuit boards and assemble parts as per the customers' requests.

The move came as the Japanese electronics maker wanted to diversify its production away from Asia, where supply chain disruptions have become risky.

The company, which previously produced circuit boards in Asia and assembled parts closer to the clients, was expected to consolidate its production line and increase predictability in lead time amid difficulties caused by the supply chain disruptions.

The company said it hopes to take advantage of Turkey's strategic location and expand the Middle East and Europe orders. “Kaga hopes to leverage its new production base to win orders related to auto-related parts as well,” the report added.

The company sources cited by the report noted that the production capacity at the plant, which will be established via an investment of millions of dollars, will increase gradually.

Kaga's Turkey operations currently amount to around 1 billion yen ($8.7 million) in sales, which the company hopes to triple in three to four years./aa

The Human Education Culture and Fraternal Association (Insan Vakfı) has opened a school in northwestern Syria’s Idlib province for 900 children to attend.

Representatives from various nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), noteworthy individuals from the region and many students attended the opening of the school, which will provide young people in the region with an education at the primary and secondary school levels.

Association head Sinan Aktaş told Anadolu Agency (AA) that the school will educate 900 students across 13 grades.

“We transformed a 200-student school made of tents into a school where 900 students will receive education,” he highlighted, saying that the association plans to expand the school in the near future for further space.

Aktaş added that work on a sports area, park and other social buildings are ongoing.

Sixth-grade student Mohammed Zayin thanked everyone who had a role in the opening of the school.

Zayin said that he moved from Aleppo to Idlib following the Bashar Assad regime’s attacks.

“We had no school. We had to go a long way to attend school.”

Another student, who is an aspiring teacher, said that she was extremely happy to be able to play in the school’s yard.

For years, the Assad regime has ignored the needs and safety of the Syrian people, only eyeing further territorial gains and crushing the opposition. With this aim, the regime has for years bombed civilian facilities, including schools, hospitals and residential areas, causing the displacement of almost half of the country's population.

The situation is especially worrying in the last opposition bastion, Idlib, one of the main targets of the Assad regime.

The Idlib region is home to nearly 3 million people, two-thirds of them displaced from other parts of the country.

Nearly 75% of the total population in the opposition-held Idlib region depends on humanitarian aid to meet their basic needs, as 1.6 million people continue to live in camps or informal settlements, the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) said.

The Idlib de-escalation zone was forged under an agreement between Turkey and Russia. The area has been the subject of multiple cease-fire agreements, which the Assad regime and its allies have frequently violated./aa

Security forces spotted the bodies of 28 migrants that washed up on Libya's western coast after their boat sunk, an official said Sunday, the latest tragedy on the world's deadliest migration route.

"Libyan Red Crescent teams recovered 28 bodies of dead migrants and found three survivors at two different sites on the beaches of Al-Alous," some 90 kilometers (55 miles) from Tripoli, the source said.

"The bodies' advanced state of decomposition indicates that the shipwreck happened several days ago," he said, adding the toll could rise in the coming hours.

Images published by Libyan media outlets showed corpses lined up along the shore then placed in body bags.

Libya, wracked by a decade of conflict and lawlessness, has become a key departure point for African and Asian migrants making desperate attempts to reach Europe.

Migrants often endure horrific conditions in Libya before embarking northwards on overcrowded, often unseaworthy vessels that frequently sink or get into trouble.

The latest tragedy comes just days after 160 migrants died within a week in similar incidents, bringing the total number of lives lost this year to 1,500, according to the International Organization for Migration.

The IOM says more than 30,000 migrants have been intercepted in the same period and returned to Libya.

The European Union has cooperated closely with the Libyan Coast Guard to cut numbers of migrants arriving on European shores.

On their return, many face further horrific abuses in detention centers./aa

AUnited Nations official said Sunday he was "horrified" by credible reports that at least 35 civilians were killed and their bodies burned in Myanmar, and demanded the government launch an investigation.

Two workers for non-profit group Save the Children remain missing after their vehicle was among several that were attacked and burned in the incident in eastern Kaya state.

A monitoring group and local media have blamed the attack on junta troops.

"I condemn this grievous incident and all attacks against civilians throughout the country," United Nations under-secretary-general for humanitarian affairs Martin Griffiths said in a statement.

He called for "a thorough and transparent investigation."

Myanmar has been in chaos since a February coup, with more than 1,300 people killed in a crackdown by security forces, according to a local monitoring group.

"People's Defence Forces" (PDF) have sprung up across the country to fight the junta, and have drawn the military into a bloody stalemate of clashes and reprisals.

On Saturday, photos appeared on social media purporting to show two burned-out trucks and a car on a highway in Hpruso township in Kayah state, with the charred remains of bodies inside.

A member of a local PDF group said its fighters had found the vehicles Saturday morning after hearing the military had stopped several vehicles in Hpruso after clashes with its fighters nearby on Friday.

"When we went to check in the area this morning, we found dead bodies burnt in two trucks. We found 27 dead bodies," he told Agence France-Presse (AFP) on condition of anonymity Saturday.

"We found 27 skulls," said another witness who did not want to be named, and who said there were other dead bodies that could not be counted.

Save the Children said later Saturday that two of its Myanmar staff had been "caught up" in the incident and were missing.

The two had been traveling home after carrying out humanitarian work in the region, the charity said in a statement, adding it had since suspended its work in several regions.

Myanmar's junta previously said its troops had been attacked in Hpruso on Friday after attempting to stop seven cars driving in a "suspicious way."

Troops had killed a number of people in the following clash, spokesperson Zaw Min Tun told AFP, without giving details.

The Myanmar Witness monitor said it had confirmed local media reports and witness accounts from local fighters "that 35 people including children and women were burnt and killed by the military on Dec. 24 in Hpruso township."

Satellite data also showed a fire had occurred around 1:00 p.m. (6:30 a.m. GMT) on Friday in Hpruso, it added.

AFP was unable to confirm the reports surrounding the clash, but AFP digital verification reporters said the images purporting to show the incident had not appeared online before Friday evening.

PDF groups have surprised the army with their effectiveness, analysts have said, as the military struggles to break resistance to its rule./DS

After weeks of heavy rains a dam collapsed in the northeastern Brazilian state of Bahia, swamping already swollen local rivers and threatening to trigger flash floods, regional authorities said late on Saturday.

The Igua dam is near the city of Vitoria da Conquista in southern Bahia, leading authorities to evacuate residents at risk downriver, mainly in the town of Itambe.

There were no reports of deaths or injuries or major damage, though details of the incident remained limited.

"A dam with a large volume of water has collapsed and a strong flash flood will impact the municipality of Itambe," the Itambe town hall posted on its official Instagram account.

"All residents should evacuate the margins of the Verruga river urgently," it added.

Itambe is an agricultural region in southern Bahia located about 200 kilometers (125 miles) inland from the coastal city of Ilheus.

The mayor of Vitoria da Consquista, Sheila Lemos, said all residents close to the river had been evacuated.

In a posting on the city's website, Lemos said the flooding threatened to cut off the BR-116 highway, a major truck route between northeastern and southern Brazil.

Bahia Governor Rui Castro said at least 300 people have been evacuated from each of some 20 towns in the state that were hit by floods caused by heavy rainfall for almost two months.

"Thousands of people have had to leave their homes because the water rose one or two meters, even three meters in some places," he told reporters on Saturday.

The rains have caused 17 deaths in Bahia since the beginning of November, and 66 towns are facing emergency situations, civil defense officials said.

In the state capital of Salvador, weather officials said December rainfall has been six times greater than the average./DS

At least 47 people lost their lives in the massive floods in Malaysia as of Sunday, according to local media.

Many regions in the country were flooded due to heavy rains that were effective for three days from Dec.17, the Asian News International said.

Police officials reported that the number of people who lost their lives in the floods has increased to 47 and search efforts were underway for five other missing people, it added.

Earlier, around 33,000 people had been evacuated, mostly from the worst-hit state of Pahang, while the government was criticized for not making the necessary warnings before the rains.

According to the country's National Disaster Management Agency, areas badly affected by the flooding include Selangor, Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Melaka, Negeri Sembilan, Perak, and Kuala Lumpur./aa

“Israel” plans to take a series of measures to ease economic difficulties in the blockaded Gaza Strip, according to “Israeli” media on Sunday.

Haaretz newspaper said the economic relief measures aim to maintain calm and prevent escalation in Gaza, but without strengthening Hamas, which rules the Palestinian territory.

The new measures include increasing the number of work permits for Palestinians in Gaza and allowing the entry of goods and materials that were banned by the Israeli army, the daily said.

“Israeli” authorities are also reviewing allowing older Palestinians in Gaza to visit the flashpoint Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem.

According to the newspaper, “Israeli” authorities are holding talks with the United Nations to agree on a mechanism to allow items classified by Israel as dual-use items to enter Gaza.

There was no comment from the Israeli government on the report.

Gaza has been under a tightened “Israeli” blockade since 2007, which has badly affected livelihood in the seaside enclave.

In May, at least 260 Palestinians were killed and thousands injured in an “Israeli” military offensive on Gaza, which also left a vast trail of destruction in the territory.

Thirteen “Israelis” were also killed by Palestinian rocket fire during the conflict./aa

Saudi Arabia has denied media reports about importing Christmas trees and Santa Claus outfits.

The Saudi Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority said that it is prohibited to import Christmas trees or any religious signs other than Islam.

The statement came in response to a question by a Twitter user on whether Christmas trees are now allowed into the kingdom.

Foreign media reports earlier said that Christmas trees, decorations and Santa Claus outfits were now being sold at stores in the oil-rich kingdom.

Christian foreigners working in Saudi Arabia, mainly from Lebanon and the Philippines, are used to celebrating Christmas behind closed doors.

Saudi Arabia has seen a host of rapid social, cultural and economic changes in recent years, initiated by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman./aa

Three officers in Israel's intelligence service Mossad have committed suicide in one year, according to Israeli media.

“Israeli” Channel 12 reported that Mossad officer Ayalon Shapira was the first officer to commit suicide on March 26, 2020.

His father cited psychological problems for his son’s suicide, saying the Mossad officer used to go to a psychiatrist.

The second suicide case was registered three months after Ayalon's death. Another Mossad agent killed himself in his workplace nine months later, but the channel didn’t provide further details.

In a statement, Mossad said it is learning from these suicide cases and is working to improve mechanisms and tools at its disposal to prevent occurrence of these suicides in the future./aa
