More than 519 Iraqi children have been killed or maimed over the past five years from explosive remnants, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) said on Tuesday.

“For the last 5 years, 519 children have been killed or maimed in Iraq due to explosive ordnance,” UNICEF said in a statement marking International Mine Awareness Day, jointly released with the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS).

It said more than 80% of the affected children are boys “due to incidents of child labor, such as grazing animals or collecting scrap metal to sell.”

“Children are particularly vulnerable, attracted to remnants for their colorful appearance and unaware of how dangerous they are. Some of these weapons are familiar household objects that have been turned into explosives,” the statement added.

UNICEF and UNMAS urged governments “to avoid the use of explosive weapons in populated areas (EWIPA), and to speak out to protect children and civilians worldwide from the threat of explosive ordnance.”

They also warned that though Iraq has not suffered from open conflicts in recent years, “the effects of explosive weapons will reverberate for years to come.”

The two bodies promised to continue providing “explosive ordnance risk education (EORE), and referrals to “relevant services, including medical treatment and psychosocial support when needed.”

However, they urged the Iraqi government and the international community to facilitate “the scale-up and provision of EORE activities so that children and other community members receive life-saving messages in schools and communities in all areas previously affected by conflict in Iraq.”

Explosive remnants are some of the biggest security challenges that the Iraqi authorities are struggling to address.

The explosives date back to the Iraq-Iran war in the 1980s, the Iraq-Kuwait war in 1991, the US invasion of Iraq in 2003, and Iraq’s war against the Daesh/ISIS terror group./aa

Eighty-year-old Helen Lewis Johnson remembers the day Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968 as if it were yesterday.

“I was enjoying being home with my four children while on a spring break…when the tragic news of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s assassination aired on national television,” Johnson recalls.

“Like most admirers and followers of Dr. King, I was saddened, hurt, disappointed and angry,” she continued. “How could a man who advocated so strongly for non-violence, inclusion, peace and freedom for all people have met such a tragic end?”

Johnson, an African American historian for the Black Heritage Society of Houston, told Anadolu Agency that the anniversary of King’s assassination should be a day in which all people embrace his peaceful teachings.

“America should reflect upon the life and legacy of Dr. King, who was too gentle to be cruel, too loving to hate, too concerned to be silent, and too forgiving to seek revenge,” she said.

“There would be no need for organizations to fight discrimination and injustice if we treated everyone as equals regardless of race, color, creed, religion and gender. Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

James Earl Ray, a known racist and fugitive, was arrested two months after King’s assassination. He was convicted of King’s murder on March 10, 1969 after pleading guilty and sentenced to 99 years in prison. Ray recanted his confession behind bars and professed his innocence to the King family in 1997. He died the following year.

“Few Black people believed James Earl Ray assassinated Dr. King, although he was a confessed racist,” said Johnson, which fueled conspiracy theories about MLK’s assassination in the Black community.

“Rather, we felt Dr. King’s death was orchestrated by a faction of the US government in collaboration with the Mafia,” Johnson continued.

“James Earl Ray was merely a pawn in the game of institutionalized racism, mind manipulation and control. His disdain for Blacks and hatred toward them made him an easy prey to take the fall for the assassination.”

Despite that tragic day, Johnson believes MLK’s assassination serves an important purpose to younger generations of African Americans and to people around the world that King’s crusade was one of peace for everyone.

“We must remember that high ideals, love and compassion for all people, and the courage to speak out against injustices of all kinds will force our countries and their leaders to condemn corruption, racial hatred and unfairness at all levels,” said Johnson.

“His death is a reminder of all the blood, sweat and tears he put in for the civil rights movement,” said 38-year-old Alicia Jennings of Houston, who is part of that younger generation.

“This tragic day means to me as an African American that because MLK fought so hard and sacrificed so much for civil rights, freedom and the rights of African Americans, we got to receive a small portion of change,” she said.

But Jennings told Anadolu Agency that the fight for civil rights is far from over and MLK’s assassination is a reminder for society not to be complacent.

“Things have changed for African Americans and yet at the same time are at a standstill. It’s time for people to look through the lens and re-evaluate what’s right and wrong and realize working as one benefits us as a whole,” she said.

“It saddens me because still to this day, my fellow brothers and sisters are still marching, fighting, protesting and voting for some of the same issues that took place when MLK was still alive. The anniversary of his death reminds me that we have still so much more work to do as a society.”

“The plantation was never dismantled, just redesigned,” said Frederick Douglas Bailey, a 27-year-old African American living in Houston, who is also part of that younger generation.

“The lesson I want people to learn on this anniversary is that the fight is far from over,” Bailey told Anadolu Agency. “The current power structure is trying to create an illusion that progress has been made, but really they have just become organized and subtle in their attack.”

Bailey says the only way society can get beyond these racial barriers and injustices is to face racism head-on and continue to employ MLK’s teachings.

“I think a message that can be shared with the world when considering this tragedy is how limiting the concept of racism is,” he said.

“It’s a made-up social construct to create a false sense of power for one group over the other. But it prevents humans from experiencing a higher form of humanity.

“Living a lie and forcing everyone to engage in the lie prevents everyone from experiencing the freedom, resources and love we are all capable of cultivating when we work together,” he added.

While Jennings says the anniversary of MLK’s assassination is important for America and the world to commemorate, she believes much more needs to be done to make sure real change takes place.

“I want people to signify that the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.‘s death isn’t the time to repost pictures and quote lines from MLK’s legendary speeches. If you don’t live by or honor his words, what’s the purpose of plastering them?” she said.

Jennings says actions speak louder than words, and MLK’s ideologies need to be practiced, not just preached, to promote peace, unity and inclusion.

“The only way future generations can carry on his legacy is by learning in-depth about his works and the issues that led to the civil rights movement and learning what happened in the past,” Jennings continued.

“It’s not to shame certain groups of people for their unfair treatment of others. It is to make sure we as a society correct the errors and produce a better environment currently and for the future generations to come. Education is the key to preventing ignorance.”/agencies

Zambia woke up Monday to a social media frenzy over its president having gone the entire eight months since his election without pay.

The ministry responsible for paying presidential wages and allowances claimed that Hakainde Hichilema has forgone wages "in his interest to serve the public."

In responding to the claim, Hichilema said a salary was not his motivation for seeking public office, to which he was elected last August.

“The issue of the salary is a non-issue because money was not our motivation for seeking public office and not that the government was not willing to pay,” he told reporters on arriving in the country’s southern city of Livingstone, where he is due to receive Rwandan President Paul Kagame on a state visit.

Hichilema, 59, an economist and businessman with local and international links, became president after a 15-year haul in the opposition, defeating then incumbent Edgar Lungu by more than a million votes.

His election followed campaign promises to heal an ailing economy by rooting out corruption and creating jobs for the masses, especially youths.

He has been a businessman since the age of 26 and amassed immense wealth, albeit amid challenges from political opponents that he made his money from his association with the controversial privatization of state assets in the 1990s.

“It is just that I have not paid attention to that (presidential salary). My intention and motivation is to see how we can better the lives of the people,” he added.

Since his election, Hichilema has been residing in his private residence in New Kasama, a plush residential area of the capital Lusaka miles away from Nkwazi House -- the official residence of a Zambian president located within State House grounds.

In 2018, Lungu's government amended legislation around presidential emoluments and allowances which saw the president start earning 40,653.25 kwacha in a monthly salary and K10,784.41 in monthly allowances.

There was however no indication that Hichilema had given up other presidential benefits.

Hichilema's net worth is estimated to be in the millions of dollars and he has previously been reported to hold shares in local hotels and the cattle processing industry as among his income sources.

He did not publicly declare his assets prior to the August polls, as the law did not compel candidates to do so.

Several members of the immediate past ruling Patriotic Front used Hichilema's wealth as a campaign tool prior to the polls, accusing him of having amassed it through the role he played in the privatization process.

Lungu had threatened Hichilema with arrest if he had won the poll, saying the then opposition leader had a lot to explain for how he became wealthy yet the privatization process left the majority in squalor.

Sean Tembo, a leader of the country's Patriots for Economic Progress party and one of Hichilema's fierce critics, said it was okay for Hichilema to forfeit his wages because "he had failed to deliver on his campaign promises."

Hichilema's decision could still be seen by some as a humane gesture amid a tough economic period for the country but does not entirely set him apart from his predecessor.

In 2016, Lungu took a 50% pay cut and another between 15% and 20% in 2019 to support government austerity measures introduced to meet the country's debt repayment obligations.

He extended the 2019 decision to his highly paid Cabinet appointees, but Hichilema's United Party for National Development described the move as deceptive.

Among other African leaders to have previously taken pay cuts in the last two years with percentages varying between 10% to 30% are South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Ghana's President Nana Akufo-Addo, Malawi's President Lazarus Chakwera and Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta./aa

The Ukrainian prosecutor general's office said Monday that the bodies of five people tortured by the Russian army were found in the city Bucha near the capital Kyiv.

They were discovered in the basement of a children's health center with their hands tied, the office said in a statement.

"Soldiers of the Russian Armed Forces tortured and then killed unarmed civilians," it said, adding police and prosecutors continue to record each war crime at the scene.

The bodies of at least 410 civilians were recovered in Bucha on Sunday, according to the prosecutor general.

Russia has denied that its troops killed civilians while withdrawing from towns near Kyiv.

Russia’s war against Ukraine, which started on Feb. 24, has been met with international outrage, with the European Union, US and UK, among others, implementing tough sanctions on Moscow.

At least 1,430 civilians have been killed in Ukraine and 2,097 injured, according to UN estimates, with the true figure feared to be far higher./aa

Ukraine’s president said Monday in a video address to Romanian lawmakers that what happened in the Ukrainian city of Bucha is a “war crime.”

"I want you to see what I saw in the city of Bucha," said Zelenskyy, apologizing for the gruesome footage he broadcast.

In the city, located near the capital Kyiv, cars were crushed by tanks and people were tortured, even though there is not all the evidence yet, he noted, adding: "Why did the Russian army do this?"

Zelenskyy claimed that if the Ukrainian army and people did not defend themselves, Russian forces would carry out massacres all over Ukraine just like they did in Bucha.

He warned that Russia wants to attack the city of Odessa and from there would be one step closer to Moldova.

"Defending Moldova's independence is essential, and this means security throughout the Danube region," he said.

Earlier in the day, Zelenskyy visited Bucha, where Ukrainian troops are said to have found the bodies of civilians following the withdrawal of Russian troops.

"It is very important for us that the press is here. There are journalists. This is the most important thing. We really want you to show the world what was happening here, what the Russian military was doing, what the Russian Federation was doing in peaceful Ukraine," he told reporters, according to Ukraine’s official news agency Ukrinform.

Major US stock indexes closed higher Monday, led by a rally in tech shares.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average posted a hike of 103.6 points, or 0.30%, to 34,921 at the close. The S&P 500 rose 36.78 points, or 0.81%, to end at 4,582.

The Nasdaq surged 271 points, or 1.90%, to finish the day at 14,532 thanks to a rally in tech shares triggered by Twitter.

Twitter shares registered their largest one-day gain, surging 28% after the company disclosed that Tesla CEO Elon Musk had taken a 9.2% stake in the company.

The VIX volatility index, known as the fear index, plummeted 5.4% to 18.57. The dollar index was up 0.34% at 98.97.

Precious metals were mixed, with gold gaining 0.47% to $1,932 per ounce and silver slipping 0.17% to $24.61.

Oil prices rose Monday as the Russia-Ukraine war continues to strain global oil markets, which were already seeing heightened price volatility.

Global benchmark Brent crude was trading at $108.03 per barrel, soaring 3.49%, while US benchmark West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude was at $103.73 -- a 4.49% surge./aa

US President Joe Biden on Monday called for his Russian counterpart to face a war crimes trial after apparent evidence of mass atrocities by Russian forces emerged from the Ukrainian city of Bucha, near the capital Kyiv.

Biden called what is being uncovered in Bucha, a city Russian troops recently withdrew from, "outrageous."

President Vladimir Putin "is a war criminal" who "should be held accountable," Biden told reporters. He continued to maintain that the US and international community must gather additional evidence to support war crimes allegations ahead of any legal proceeding.

"This guy is brutal," Biden said of Putin. "What's happening in Bucha is outrageous, and everyone's seen it."

Biden said he believes what he has seen falls short of constituting genocide, but is nonetheless a war crime. He further vowed to impose additional sanctions on the Kremlin.

The bodies of at least 410 civilians were recovered in the city of Bucha on Sunday, according to Ukraine's prosecutor-general. Russia has denied that its troops killed civilians while withdrawing from towns near Kyiv.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for an independent investigation into the mass killings, and for "effective accountability" to be established.

Ukraine has called on international organizations to send experts to the country as soon as possible to collect evidence of war crimes committed by Russian troops.

On Saturday, Mikhail Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, said the bodies of people with their hands tied and shot dead by Russian troops "lie in the streets" in Bucha.

The Russian war against Ukraine, which started on Feb. 24, has been met with international outrage, with the European Union, US, and UK among others implementing sweeping financial sanctions on Moscow.

At least 1,430 civilians have been killed in Ukraine and 2,097 injured, according to UN estimates, with the true figure feared to be far higher.

More than 4.1 million Ukrainians have also fled to other countries, with millions more internally displaced, according to the UN refugee agency./aa

The German subsidiary of Russian energy giant Gazprom will be placed under the authority of the German Federal Network Agency, the country’s economy minister said on Monday.

Germany’s decision came three days after Gazprom announced that it was abandoning its operations in Germany amid a disagreement between the two countries over Moscow's recent insistence on receiving payments for Russian gas in rubles rather than euros.

Describing the move as "absolutely necessary," Robert Habeck said Gazprom Germania operates critical infrastructure in Germany and is therefore "outstandingly important for the gas supply."

"The government is doing what is necessary to ensure security of supply in Germany," Habeck told reporters.

He voiced concern about “the unclear legal situation” of the company after Russia’s decision to stop its operations, calling the move a “violation of the reporting requirements of the Foreign Trade Ordinance.”

Klaus Muller, the head of Germany’s Federal Network Agency, said the agency will ensure “proper management,” taking all necessary steps to continue to ensure the security of supplies.

Gazprom Germania plays a key role in Germany's energy supply through its subsidiary Wingas. Gazprom is involved in gas trading in Germany while its subsidiary Astora operates Germany's largest natural gas storage facility in the northern town of Rehden in the state of Lower Saxony./aa

The US announced on Monday that it will seek a vote within the UN General Assembly for Russia's expulsion from the Human Rights Council (HRC).

"We cannot let a member state that is subverting every principle we hold dear to continue to participate in the HRC, nor should it hold a position of authority and use its seat on the council as a tool for propaganda," State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters.

The announcement comes in the wake of chilling video and photo evidence that emerged over the weekend of apparent mass atrocities committed by Russian forces in Kyiv oblast prior to their pullout from the region.

A member can be removed from the HRC following a two-thirds vote within the General Assembly if a state is found to have engaged in a pattern of gross and systemic abuses.

The bodies of at least 410 civilians were recovered in the city of Bucha on Sunday, according to Ukraine's prosecutor-general. Russia has denied that its troops killed civilians while withdrawing from towns near Kyiv.

Ukraine has called on international organizations to send experts to the country as soon as possible to collect evidence of war crimes committed by Russian troops.

The State Department said the US is currently supporting a multinational team of international prosecutors who are in the region "to collect, preserve, and analyze evidence of atrocities with a view towards pursuing criminal accountability."

Earlier on Monday, US President Joe Biden called for Russian President Vladimir Putin to face a war crimes trial, saying he "should be held accountable."

Most people globally, some 99% of the world's population, breathe air that exceeds World Health Organization (WHO) air quality limits, new data shows, the UN agency said on Monday, urging a world less dependent on fossil fuels.

The WHO said its 2022 updates on its air quality database introduce ground measurements of annual mean concentrations of nitrogen dioxide (NO2), a typical urban pollutant and precursor of particulate matter and ozone.

A record number of over 6,000 cities in 117 countries now monitor air quality, but the people living in them still breathe unhealthy fine particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide, said the global health body.

People in low and middle-income countries are suffering the highest exposure.

“Current energy concerns highlight the importance of speeding up the transition to cleaner, healthier energy systems,” said Tedros Ghebreyesus, the WHO director-general.

“High fossil fuel prices, energy security, and the urgency of addressing the twin health challenges of air pollution and climate change underscore the pressing need to move faster towards a world that is much less dependent on fossil fuels.”

The findings of the new research have prompted the WHO to highlight the importance of curbing fossil fuel use and taking other tangible steps to reduce air pollution levels.

World Health Day

The new data came ahead of World Health Day, April 7, which this year celebrates the theme “Our planet, our health.”

WHO said the new air quality database is the most extensive yet in its coverage of air pollution exposure on the ground.

Some 2,000 more cities and human settlements are now recording ground monitoring data for particulate matter, PM10 and/or PM2.5, compared to the last update, said the WHO.

Both pollutants originate mainly from human activities related to fossil fuel combustion, it added.

The release marks an almost six-fold rise in reporting since the 2011 launch of the database.

The WHO said the evidence for the damage air pollution causes to the human body has grown rapidly and points to significant harm caused by even low levels of many air pollutants.

Particulate matter, especially PM2.5, can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, causing cardiovascular, cerebrovascular (stroke), and have respiratory impacts.

Emerging data show that particulate matter also impacts other organs and causes other diseases.

“NO2 is associated with respiratory diseases, particularly asthma, leading to respiratory symptoms (such as coughing, wheezing or difficulty breathing), hospital admissions, and visits to emergency rooms,” said the WHO.

Last year, the global health body revised its Air Quality Guidelines, making them more stringent to help countries better evaluate the healthiness of their air./agencies
