The US raised alarm on Friday at the potential evictions of several families in Palestinian-majority neighborhoods in occupied East Jerusalem.

"We are deeply concerned about the potential eviction of Palestinian families in the Silwan neighborhood and in Sheikh Jarrah, many of whom have lived in those homes for generations," State Department spokeswoman Jalina Porter told reporters.

"As we have consistently said, it is critical to avoid unilateral steps that exacerbate tensions or take us further away from peace, this includes evictions, settlement activity and home demolitions," she added.

The Zionist Central Court in East Jerusalem approved a decision to evict seven Palestinian families from their homes in favor of right-win Israeli settlers at the beginning of 2021.

Zionist's Supreme Court delayed its ruling on their evictions on Thursday amid heated demonstrations and clashes between Palestinians and settlers. Another hearing has been scheduled for May 10.

Since 1956, a total of 37 Palestinian families have been living in 27 homes in the neighborhood. However, Jewish settlers have been trying to force them out on the basis of a law approved by the Israeli parliament in 1970.

Hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forced to flee their villages and towns in historical Palestine to neighboring countries including Jordan, Lebanon and Syria in 1948.

Zionists occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 Arab-Israeli war. It annexed the entire city in 1980 in a move never recognized by the international community.

Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), which have been fighting in the ranks of the Bashar al-Assad regime in Syria, sent some 120 Syrian mercenaries to Yemen to fight on the side of the Houthi militias, according to local sources on Friday.

Previously, members of Iran-backed terrorist groups in the Deir ez-Zor province of eastern Syria, the mercenaries will be on an Iranian payroll of $400-500 per month, the sources said on condition of anonymity.

They will be sent to the conflict zones in the war-torn country after a week of training in the capital Sana'a, they noted, adding that depending on the performance of the first group of mercenaries, more fighters could be dispatched to Yemen in the near future.

Yemen has been ravaged by violence and instability since 2014 when Houthi rebels captured much of the country, including the capital, Sanaa.

The crisis escalated in 2015 when a Saudi Arabia-led coalition launched a devastating air campaign to roll back Houthi territorial gains.

It has since caused one of the world's worst man-made humanitarian crises with 80% of the population in need of assistance and protection./aa

Kuwait’s Foreign Minister and Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs assured Libya of his country’s firm support as the Arab North African nation heads towards elections in December, in line with a UN-backed deal after a decade of political turmoil and economic upheaval.

In a press conference alongside his Libyan counterpart Najla El-Mangoush on Tuesday, Sheikh Dr Ahmad Nasser Al-Sabah conveyed to her the best wishes of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, nearly two months after the country’s unity government garnered parliamentary backing.

The Kuwaiti foreign minister wished the Chairman of Libya’s Presidential Council Mohamed Al-Menfi success as the former diplomat from Benghazi looks to get the war-torn nation’s institutions on the same page whilst steering the country in a path towards free and fair elections slated for December 24.

Holding talks with officials from across Libya’s political spectrum, including Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibeh, all of which centered around the “mutual desire” to enhance bilateral ties, he said the talks also included current happenings around the region. Some 11 “vital” bilateral deals had been signed in the past to buttress cooperation in a variety of domains, the Kuwaiti foreign minister said, expecting “more agreements to follow suit soon to meet the collective aspirations of the peoples of the two friendly countries.”

He went on to urge the international community to stand alongside Libya in this critical juncture, which is crucial to preserve the country’s sovereignty and security and invariably help usher in prosperity and development, as embedded in relevant UN Security Council resolutions.”

Libya’s top diplomat thanked Kuwait for the unflinching support it has offered Tripoli, saying the return of a joint committee for higher-level talks, in abeyance since 2010, would herald in a new era of bilateral relations. During his visit to Libya Tuesday, Sheikh Dr Ahmad handed Menfi a written message from His Highness the Amir, related to means of bolstering the solid ties between the two brotherly countries. – KUNA

Among all the potential dangers of climate change, the top risk it poses to Turkey is its threat to the country's food security and water supplies, an expert told Anadolu Agency.

"Drought is the most pressing issue we need to deal with ... As a country, the most important problem [we have] in the context of climate change is our food security," Levent Kurnaz, an Istanbul-based climate scientist, said in an interview on climate-change-related extreme weather events.

Water shortages would "reflect more heavily on agriculture," Kurnaz warned of the alarming risks of drought and food insecurity, which he said demanded urgent action.

So, the country needs to preserve all the water resources it can and maximize its arable basins, especially since three-fourths of its lands are non-agricultural, asserted Kurnaz, who currently serves at the Center for Climate Change and Policy Studies at Bogazici University.

He also noted the health risks related to the falling water levels amid rising temperatures and strain in the healthcare system caused by the novel coronavirus pandemic, now in its second year.

"So, let's say that there's a heatwave in Istanbul and we see 45 degrees, there could be an incredible loss of life and we're not ready for such problems," he said.

Kurnaz went on to say that Turkey also is not prepared for other dangerous diseases, such as malaria and the West Nile virus if they arrive in Turkey with the changing climate.

Once the outbreak subsides, however, the top item on Turkey's to-do list against climate change should be the modernization of its agriculture, he added.

"We have to modernize the irrigation systems in agriculture. We need to use only enough water for the plant and build a system in which no water is wasted."

Extreme weather events in Turkey

One expected consequence of global climate change is an increase in frequency and severity of extreme weather events, said meteorologist Huseyin Toros.

Turkey has been in the midst of an increasing trend in meteorological disasters in recent years said the professor at the Meteorological Engineering Department of Istanbul Technical University (ITU).

"There's a correlation between the increase in global warming and increase of extreme weather events in recent years," he said, explaining that global warming was one of the various factors that affected meteorological events.

Owing to its geographical location, Turkey's southern regions are marked by hot deserts, while the Siberian cold dominates in the northeast. To its west, the influence of the Atlantic Ocean -- an expansive source of water vapor -- also pumps energy in Turkey's Mediterranean and Aegean coasts.

Since a partial drought last year, very good work has begun in Turkey to harvest and store rainwater, as well as to provide domestic water resources on-site, said Toros, in what he said was a great practice in socio-economic terms.

He highlighted that these practices were introduced after extensive media coverage of the dry season that increased public awareness of the issue.

"[However], since our country is not rich in water, water resources must be used efficiently," he warned, stressing that "no resources are unlimited."

Including past climate data and future projections in the water usage plans would largely eliminate the risk of running out, reassured Toros.

"It may be necessary to have different scenarios for this. For example, [water] use can be planned depending on the amount of water in each region. In other words, our activities can be adapted to agriculture, industry, etc. annual water budgets."

He underlined that efforts to increase public awareness and sensitivity on using resources efficiently and economically should continue.

"Efforts should continue at an accelerated pace to increase the share of renewable energy in energy resources. Studies that take all stakeholders, living or non-living, into account will reduce the negative effects of climate change."/aa

No one should expect Turkey to stay silent over violations of the rights of Greece’s Turkish minority, according to Turkey’s deputy foreign minister.

Turkish Muslims in the Greek city of Thessaloniki are upset over the few mosques open for prayer there despite the presence of many Ottoman-era mosques, Yavuz Selim Kiran told a news conference at Turkey’s Consulate General in Komotini late Wednesday.

Kiran is visiting areas of Greece with a sizeable Turkish minority population such as Western Thrace and Thessaloniki.

The Turkish government brought up the lack of open mosques during its contacts with Greek officials, he added.

Turkey is taking the initiative to address this troubling issue, and international organizations – the EU in particular – should call on Greece to take steps on this, said Kiran.

The Turkish government will address a variety of issues the Turkish minority faces, including education, ethnicity, freedom of religion, and the administration of foundation properties, Kiran said, adding that the status of the Turkish minority is guaranteed by international agreements and the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne.

Stressing that the Greek and Turkish minorities in both countries are like bridges strengthening bilateral ties, Kiran said Ankara hopes Athens will take critical steps to improve the living standards of the Turkish minority.

Turkey would support any positive step by Greece to further minority rights, but no international actor can expect it to remain silent in the face of rights violations, he added.

The Western Thrace region is home to a Muslim Turkish community of around 150,000, and Turkey has protested various Greek policies violating their rights, including Athens' defiance of European Court of Human Rights rulings ordering it to change course./aa

India set a new global record Thursday after the country registered its biggest single-day rise in coronavirus cases of over 412,000 in the last 24 hours.

The Health Ministry reported 412,262 new cases, taking the country’s total number of infections to over 21 million. With a record 3,980 new fatalities, the death toll reached 230,168.

It marked the second time that the country's daily cases surpassed 400,000. Last Saturday, India registered 401,993 daily infections. Many experts also believe that cases and deaths are undercounted.

The country has been struggling with a deadly second wave that has severely strained its health system, leading to shortages of oxygen supplies at hospitals as well as beds and coronavirus treatment drugs such as Remdesivir.

The situation has been worse in the capital New Delhi, where hospitals have raised alarms on social media begging for oxygen, with many approaching courts for intervention.

There have been deaths in New Delhi and other parts of the country because of low oxygen supplies at hospitals.

India’s Supreme Court, which is hearing the COVID-19 linked cases Wednesday, asked the federal government to submit a “comprehensive plan” to the court indicating the manner in which the direction for the allocation of 700 metric tons of liquid medical oxygen to New Delhi shall be complied with.

A top Indian scientist also warned Wednesday that a third wave is “inevitable” in the country.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who is facing huge criticism for failing to manage the second wave, has announced more steps to deal with the situation. An ongoing vaccination drive in the country has also taken a hit as many Indian states are reporting shortages of vaccine supplies.

Amid the unprecedented surge in the number of coronavirus cases, there have been growing calls for a national lockdown to break the transmission.

“There is no other option other than to go for a national lockdown to break the chain,” Dr. Digambar Behera, a renowned Indian pulmonologist, told Anadolu Agency.

“Yes, the lockdown would bring more economic hardship, but there seems to be no other option. The way numbers are increasing, it only tells us that we were not prepared to deal with this type of surge.”/aa

Turkey rescued 30 asylum seekers Wednesday who were illegally pushed back by the Greek Coast Guard into Turkish territorial waters in the Aegean Sea, according to security sources.

The asylum seekers were rescued in the early morning hours from a rubber boat off the coast of Ayvalik in Turkey's northwestern Balikesir province, the Coast Guard Command said in a statement.

They were taken ashore and later referred to the provincial migration office.

Turkey has been a key transit point for asylum seekers who want to cross into Europe to start new lives, especially those fleeing war and persecution.

Turkey and human rights groups have repeatedly condemned Greece's illegal practice of pushing back asylum seekers, saying it violates humanitarian values and international law by endangering the lives of vulnerable migrants, including women and children./aa

Two doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine are highly effective against COVID-19 infection, hospitalization and death, according to the first nationwide assessment in Israel.

The study, published in The Lancet medical journal, found that two doses of the vaccine provide more than 95% protection against infection, hospitalization, severe illness and death, including among the elderly.

While the findings are encouraging, several challenges to controlling the pandemic remain, it said.

Underlining that the duration of immunity to COVID-19 – both from infection and immunization – remains unknown, it said new vaccine-resistant variants could emerge in the future.

It went on to say that achieving herd immunity will require a continued increase of vaccination coverage worldwide.

The dominant COVID-19 strain during the study period was the B.1.1.7 variant. However, another prominent variant, B.1.351 – known as the South Africa variant – has recently been identified in Israel.

A single dose of the vaccine was associated with 58% protection against infection, 76% against hospitalization and 77% against death, it noted, emphasizing the importance of fully vaccinating adults.

By 14 days after vaccination, protection conferred by a second dose increased to 96.5% protection against infection, 98.0% against hospitalization and 98.1% against death, it said.

Protection among the elderly was as strong as that for younger people, with analysis indicating that people over 85 had 94.1% protection against infection, 96.9% against hospitalization and 97% against death seven days after receiving their second dose.

People aged 16-44 had 96.1% protection against infection, 98.1% against hospitalization and 100% against death, the study showed.

“As the country with the highest proportion of its population vaccinated against COVID-19, Israel provides a unique real-world opportunity to determine the effectiveness of the vaccine and to observe wider effects of the vaccination program on public health,” said Dr. Sharon Alroy-Preis, the lead author of the assessment.

“Until this point, no country in the world had described the national public health impact of a nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign. These insights are hugely important because, while there are still some considerable challenges to overcome, they offer real hope that COVID-19 vaccination will eventually enable us to control the pandemic,” she added.

The authors used national pandemic surveillance data recorded by Israel’s Ministry of Health to produce the vaccine’s effectiveness. The data was analyzed in groups based on the participants’ age.

The average follow-up time for people who had received two doses was 48 days, the longest reported follow-up to date.

Since December 2019, the COVID-19 pandemic has claimed over 3.23 million lives in 192 countries and regions, according to figures compiled by US-based Johns Hopkins University.

Over 154 million cases have been reported worldwide, with recoveries now over 91 million./aa

The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) said Wednesday that it is extremely concerned about the safety of French journalist Olivier Dubois who was kidnapped in northern Mali's Gao region.

CPJ’s African Program Coordinator Angela Quintal urged Malian and French authorities to thoroughly investigate Dubois' disappearance.

“Too often, the disappearance of a journalist is followed by tragedy and unanswered questions. We hope this is not the case here,” said Quintal.

Secretary-General of Reporters Without Borders Christophe Deloire said earlier Wednesday that a 21-second video showed Dubois claiming that he was kidnapped April 8 by Jama'at Nasr al‑Islam wal Muslimin -- a militant group active in the Maghreb and West Africa that was formed by the merger of Ansar Dine, the Macina Liberation Front, Al-Mourabitoun, and the Saharan branch of the Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb.

French authorities also confirmed Dubois' disappearance.

“We are in contact with his family as well as with the Malian authorities. We carry out the usual technical verifications,” said an unnamed Foreign Ministry official.

Dubois usually works for Le Point Afrique and Liberation./aa
