The Biden administration will begin reuniting children separated from the parents under former President Donald Trump, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced on Monday.

In all, four families are being reunited this week after they were separated under Trump's "zero tolerance" policy, which was geared at deterring immigration using methods decried by rights groups as inhumane.

US President Joe Biden signed an order in February to form a task force mandated with identifying children who had been separated from their parents at the US-Mexico border during the former administration, and it has spent the past three months compiling a database of hundreds of separated families.

"Many more" reunifications will take place in the coming weeks, the department said in a statement.

“The Family Reunification Task Force has been working day and night, across the federal government and with counsel for the families and our foreign partners, to address the prior administration’s cruel separation of children from their parents,” said DHS Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said.

“Today is just the beginning. We are reuniting the first group of families, many more will follow, and we recognize the importance of providing these families with the stability and resources they need to heal,” he added.

Speaking during an interview with the CBS television program This Morning, Mayorkas said the department has "hundreds of families" waiting to be reunited, vowing all of them will be./aa

The EU medicine regulator announced Monday that it had started to review if BioNTech/Pfizer vaccines can be given to young people age 12 to 15.

Last December the European Medicine Agency approved the COVID-19 vaccine for people 16 and older.

Now, following the request of pharma companies BioNTech and Pfizer, the EMA started to evaluate if the jab’s application can be expanded to the younger group.

The assessment will also take into consideration the results of a large ongoing clinical trial with the involvement of adolescents older than 12, the agency said.

The agency promised to deliver the results as soon as possible.

Depending on its assessment, the European Commission may approve expanding the drug’s application.

BioNTech/Pfizer vaccines were the first COVID-19 jabs authorized in the EU.

The jab uses an innovative mRNA technique based on a messenger molecule with instructions to produce a protein from the virus that causes COVID-19 to prepare the body to fight the disease.

Unlike traditional vaccines, BioNTech/Pfizer does not contain the virus itself./aa

At least 16 civilians and one police officer have died during protests against a government tax reform in Colombia since the start of unrest six days ago, the country's Ombudsman Carlos Camargo said Monday.

At least 254 civilians and 457 police officers have been injured during the protests and vandalism so far, and clashes between police and protesters were reported in several cities.

Although protests grew on a daily basis since they began on Wednesday, President Ivan Duque said he would revise the controversial bill, but that it could not be withdrawn in its entirety. Finally, Duque withdrew the proposed tax reform on Sunday.

Despite the announcement by Colombia's president, new protests are being called in Bogota and other major cities, including Cali, Medellin, Barranquilla and Cartagena.

The proposal was taken by many as a law that would impoverish the middle class that has suffered during the pandemic.

Monetary poverty in Colombia rose from 35.7% to 42.5% last year, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the director of the Administrative Department of National Statistics (DANE), Juan Daniel Oviedo.

“Colombia went from having 17.4 million people in monetary poverty to 21 million," he said last week.

However, the government insists that such reform is necessary to ensure the country’s fiscal stability, maintain its credit rating and fund social programs.

According to Blu Radio, Finance Minister Alberto Carrasquilla has handed in his resignation on Monday./aa

NAIROBI, Kenya

Many African countries on Monday joined the world in celebrating World Press Freedom Day as intimidation, threats, and assault by state authorities and non-state actors continue across the continent.

On Saturday, Mariel Mueller, an East Africa correspondent for German public broadcaster Deutsche Welle, was shot at and injured by police while covering a protest against police violence in Kenya.

Police attacked Mueller during an interview at a peaceful protest in the capital Nairobi. She was shot at with two teargas canisters.

“Kenyan police shot me twice in the leg with a teargas canister while we were doing an interview,” Mueller said on Twitter Saturday, sharing pictures showing her injuries.

Last year Kenyan journalist Peter Maina and his colleagues were assaulted by police while covering a story on how police are using extreme violence against innocent Kenyans while enforcing COVID-19 mitigation measures.

These are among the many cases reported to rights groups and the Media Council of Kenya (MCK).

“May we bear testimony to the sacrifices of our fallen colleagues in the course of duty and rededicate ourselves to service for the nation. May we also defend media freedom from saboteurs and stand for the right of a free, but responsible media,” William Oketch, chairman of the MCK’s Complaints Commission, said on Monday, marking the day with the theme of “information as a public good.”

On World Press Freedom Day, Amnesty International also said that journalists and media outlets across East and Southern Africa have been facing growing attacks since last year.

Amnesty said that across the region, media workers have been laid off, TV stations suspended or shut down, private press targeted, and journalists intimidated in a heavy blow to the right to freedom of expression and access to information.

Deprose Muchena, Amnesty International’s director for East and Southern Africa, said: “What we have witnessed in the past year, as far as media and journalistic freedom is concerned, can only be described as a dark period.”

Press freedom under attack in Somalia

Since last year, three journalists have been killed in Somalia by gunmen and al-Shabaab terrorists. Many journalists were also “beaten, harassed, threatened, subjected to arbitrary arrests, and were intimidated by the authorities, including by police, military and other government officials throughout south-central Somalia and in Puntland,” Amnesty said.

The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) on Monday released a State of Media Freedom Report which details an atmosphere of media under siege, with two journalists murdered, 33 reporters arrested, and 113 others intimidated and assaulted in 2020.

"Not a single murder of journalists killed in 2020 has been investigated, resolved, and the culprit brought to book,” said NUSOJ Secretary General Omar Faruk Osman,

Hopeful moves in Tanzania

In the past Tanzania media watchdog the Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA) made it hard for journalists to work in the country, such as by shutting down outlets for criticizing the government of President John Pombe Magufuli, who died this March.

When a new president took office later that month, she ordered the Information Ministry to lift the ban on certain media outlets operating in Tanzania, a move that many have hailed as positive for press freedom.

US Ambassador Donald Wright said on Monday: “With regard to the legal framework that makes it difficult for journalists to operate, I’m encouraged by the recent steps taken by President Samia Suluhu Hassan to lift some of the repressive restrictions on the media.

“I applaud such an initiative and urge all media stakeholders to embrace these measures in good faith, and engage in a productive dialogue to revise the laws that have undermined the free press in Tanzania in recent years.”

Wright commended recent moves by the government to hold accountable those who intimidate or harass journalists.

Rights groups said Uganda is still struggling to offer journalists a free environment, as the government has been arresting, assaulting and intimidating journalists. President Yoweri Museveni’s government, which has been in power for 35 years, has been asked to respect journalists’ rights for a better Uganda.

South Sudan urged to protect journalists

The acting US ambassador in South Sudan on Monday called on the government to improve media freedom by ending intimidation and harassment of journalists.

Larry André Jr, the US chargé d'affaires, urged the government to ensure a safe environment for journalists to work without fear.

“We call on the South Sudanese government to do everything in its power to ensure that journalists feel protected and supported in their crucial mission of getting accurate information to the people,” said Andre, addressing a virtual ceremony in the capital Juba./agencies

Turkish appliance giant Arcelik and biomedical company Biosys have collaborated to develop an oxygen therapy device critical for treating COVID-19, Biosys announced Monday.

"After a year of R&D and development of the BiO2Flow High Flow Oxygen Therapy Device, one of the most critical devices in the treatment of COVID-19, we completed the production work in cooperation with Arcelik," said Biosys CEO Cemal Erdogan in a statement.

"The device started to be actively used in our hospitals in order to support our healthcare workers struggling with the pandemic at the expense of their lives," he added.

As BIO2Flow can operate and be transported independently from intensive care units, companies aim to provide great support to healthcare professionals, said the statement.

Earlier in the pandemic, Arcelik and Biosys collaborated on the mass production of mechanical ventilators with the help of fellow Turkish firms Arcelik, Aselsan, and Baykar, under the leadership of the Turkish government, through the Health Ministry and Industry and Technology Ministry.

Meeting a critical need in the age of COVID-19, the Turkish-made ventilators are now in use in over 30 countries./aa

Kuwait City: The head of the COVID-19 Supreme Advisory Committee at the Ministry of Health, Dr. Khalid Al Jarallah, announced that the chances of implementing a total lockdown is ruled out, local media reported.

He added that there is a slight decrease in positive COVID-19 cases, because of the partial curfew, which was implemented since March 7.

In a Tweet, Al Jarallah revealed that currently 65 per cent of COVID-19 patients that are hospitalized or are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) are expats. As of Saturday, there are 220 patients undergoing treatment in the ICU.

The average percentage of positive cases to number of tests conducted in the past month was around 15 per cent, similar to the month before.

In addition, throughout April Kuwait registered 250 COVID-19 related deaths, the highest month since the pandemic began.

Vaccine milestone

Al Jarallah pointed out that achieving vaccination immunization is one of the ways to improve the health situation.

Last week, Kuwait reached a milestone after the Ministry of Health reported that more than one million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered.

Kuwait has currently vaccinated around 27 per cent of its population./agencies

Security forces in Myanmar killed six more people, taking the death toll since protests began against the Feb. 1 military coup to 765, according to a local monitoring group.

Five people were killed on Sunday and one on Saturday but documented on Sunday, the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP) said in its latest report.

"This is the number verified by AAPP. The actual number of fatalities is likely much higher," the group said.

As many as 3,555 people are under detention and 82 of them have been convicted, while 1,396 people have been issued arrest warrants.

The crackdown in the Southeast Asian nation started just after Feb. 1, when democratically elected state counselor and de facto head of government Aung San Suu Kyi was ousted in a coup and detained by the military junta.

Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) party won a second term in November, but the military said rigging of the polls had forced it to seize power.

Pro-democracy protests have taken place in cities and towns across the country since the military takeover.

The UN and rights groups have expressed concern over the use of disproportionate force by the military junta on unarmed protesters./aa

At least 97 people were killed and 58 others abducted over the last week in armed attacks in Nigeria, according to local news reports on Sunday.

Numerous people were injured in the attacks since Monday across different parts of the West African country.

State Governor Abubakar Bello had confirmed earlier that at least 3,000 people were displaced when Boko Haram terrorists attacked Kaure, a remote community in the northern Niger State.

Boko Haram launched a bloody insurgency in 2009 in northeastern Nigeria but later spread its activities to the neighboring Niger, Chad and Cameroon, prompting a military response.

More than 30,000 people have been killed and nearly 3 million displaced in a decade of Boko Haram's terror activities in Nigeria, according to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs.

Violence committed by Boko Haram has affected 26 million people in the Lake Chad region and displaced 2.6 million others, according to the UN Refugee Agency./aa

Berlin police have arrested at least 354 people who took part in May Day demonstrations that devolved into full-scale riots in the German capital, according to local media reports on Sunday.

Reacting to the May 1 unrest, Berlin's Interior Senator Andreas Geisel lashed out at the mostly young rioters for attacking police officers.

This has nothing to do with political protest, said Geisel.

"We will not accept that some violence-seeking autonomists want to take away our May 1 as a day for peaceful demonstrations," he added.

Police also reported that at least 93 people, including police officers, were injured in street clashes in the district of Neukoelln.

Around 5,600 police officers from several federal states were reportedly on duty during the May Day rallies in Berlin.

Black-clad protesters threw bottles, firecrackers and stones at baton-wielding police who tried to disperse the crowd with pepper spray and water-gun trucks.

Police were repeatedly attacked while trying to pull troublemakers out of the crowd as several protesters were arrested.

Followers of the PKK terror group also rallied during protests in Berlin, carrying rags of the organization and its Syrian branch, YPG.

Some also carried posters of Abdullah Ocalan, the group's leader who is jailed. Police did not intervene although the group has been banned in Germany and the use of the terror organization’s symbols has been prohibited by the Interior Ministry.

Dumpsters and pallets were set on fire in the Neukoelln district as paramedics were on the scene to treat the wounded.

The demonstrations were organized by the trade unions and radical leftist and anarchist groups, but right-wing groups and critics of coronavirus measures also met for permitted and unauthorized protests across Germany, including in the cities of Hamburg and Frankfurt.

According to police estimates, 5,000 people took part in the May 1 march, while organizers put the turnout at around 20,000.

The situation did not calm down until late Saturday night./ agencies

The Turkish Red Crescent on Sunday distributed food packages to the needy across Somalia, an official said.

A total of 1,420 food packages, including 420 in KM4 area of Hodan district in the capital Mogadishu, Orhan Kokcu, the organization's head in the East African country, told Anadolu Agency.

Over 500 packages each were distributed in the port city of Bosaso's Laanta Hawada village, and Gaykayo town in Mudug region.

"The Turkish Red Crescent will complete the distribution of food parcels in the coming days, but continue to work on routine humanitarian aid activities," Kokcu said. Preparations have also begun for activities during the Eidal Fitr festival, he added.

The charity has intensified its activities during the holy month of Ramadan./aa
