The World Health Organization chief called on its 194 members on Monday to rapidly start global negotiations to agree on an international treaty on pandemic preparedness and emergency response to make the world ready for the next pandemic.

WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus delivered closing remarks at the 47th World Health Assembly, noting that the theme of this year’s WHA was “Ending this pandemic, preventing the next one.”

Tedros said: “The reality is, we still have a lot of work to do to end this pandemic.”

The assembly ended with the world looking at COVID-19, which the WHO said Monday have claimed more than 3.53 million lives worldwide along with nearly 170 million confirmed cases, and almost 1.55 million vaccine doses being administered.

“The one recommendation that I believe will do most to strengthen both the WHO and global health security is the recommendation for a treaty on pandemic preparedness and response,” said Tedros. “This is an idea whose time has come.”

He also said, “I urge all member states to commit to supporting the targets to achieve vaccination of at least 10% of the population of all countries by the end of September, and at least 30% by the end of the year.”

The WHO chief said that a defining characteristic of the pandemic is the lack of sharing: of data, information, pathogens, technologies, and resources.

“These are the challenges we’re facing; we’ve been facing since the pandemic started, and even before,” said Tedros.

A treaty would foster improved sharing, trust and accountability, and provide a solid foundation for building other mechanisms for global health security.

The WHO head said the number of coronavirus cases and deaths continuing to decline globally is encouraging but warned it would be “a monumental error” for any nation to think the danger has passed.

More than 30 resolutions and decisions were adopted at this year’s WHA, said the WHO.

These were in the areas of public health: decisions on diabetes, disabilities, ending violence against children, eye care, HIV, hepatitis, and sexually transmitted infections, local production of medicines, malaria, neglected tropical diseases, noncommunicable diseases, nursing and midwifery, oral health, social determinants of health and strategic directions for the health and care of workforce./aa

Authorities in Bosnia and Herzegovina on Monday discovered a new mass grave containing bone remains estimated to belong to civilians killed during the 1992-1995 Bosnian War.

The new mass grave was discovered in the Dobro Polje village of southern Kalinovik city, the Missing Persons Institute of Bosnia and Herzegovina said.

Remains of at least three people were unearthed during the excavations and they are thought to have been Bosnian Muslims killed in 1992-95 during the Bosnian War.

The exhumation is still ongoing and will be carried out with machines and manually with participation of officials from Prosecutor's Office and the Bosnia and Herzegovina Research and Protection Agency (SIPA).

According to the data by the institute, more than 550 mass graves have been found in the country so far since the war./aa

ILLINOIS, US

The details -- from what sparked it, to how many died -- remain murky, and until recently, most Americans had never even heard of it.

But with each passing year, the horror of what happened in Tulsa, Oklahoma at the end of May, 1921, comes more painfully into view.

A Black teenager, Dick Rowland, entered an elevator in Tulsa on May 30, 1921. By multiple accounts, he may have tripped getting in and inadvertently grabbed the arm of a white teenage girl, then got scared, and ran off. Or, as a sheriff's report put it, he attacked her, then fled.

Rowland was arrested the next day, and a crowd of both angry whites and blacks gathered outside the courthouse where he was held, stoked by a headline in the local Tulsa Tribune newspaper: "Nab Negro for Attacking Girl in Elevator."

Shots fired outside the courthouse left ten whites and two blacks dead.

At the time, Tulsa was home to something that seemed wildly out of place in the post-slavery era South, something that might even seem out of a place today: a mostly black, economically thriving neighborhood called Greenwood, nicknamed the "Black Wall Street".

A mob of whites descended on Greenwood, and for about 16 hours laid waste to it. More than 1,200 homes were destroyed, along with 35 blocks of businesses, most burned to the ground.

Grainy footage of the aftermath shows smoldering shells of buildings and bodies in the streets. Dozens of people were confirmed dead, but historians agree the actual death toll likely reached into the hundreds, possibly to 300, with hundreds more injured.

None of the attackers was ever named or prosecuted, no court trials ever put the horror of the attack on any kind of record and white Tulsa simply moved on.

Black Tulsa never forgot

Reverend Robert Turner, pastor of Vernon AME church in Greenwood, has been helping keep the story of the massacre alive.

Inside the church are old photos of the part of the building that survived the destruction, before the church was re-built. Outside, there's a plaque that describes how the section that survived "is the only edifice remaining from the worst race massacre in American history."

It was then-President Donald Trump's trip to Tulsa in June of last year, around the anniversary of the massacre and the annual "Juneteenth" celebration, which recognizes the emancipation of the slaves, that touched off renewed interest in both events. But adding to the rawness of the moment was the death of George Floyd under the knee of a white Minneapolis police officer just days earlier.

"For Trump to come on this weekend, at this sacred time," Reverend Turner told me at the time, standing outside the church, "I just think it's totally ridiculous."

But with media from around the world arriving in Tulsa that weekend, Turner was happy to get out the word about the massacre. He has been fighting for years to secure reparations for descendants of the massacre victims, at the very least for the three survivors of the massacre.

One of them, Viola Fletcher testified before Congress earlier in May on the idea of reparations.

"I'm 107 years old and I have never seen justice," said Fletcher. "I pray that one day I will."

There has been a sea change on the idea of reparations since last year and in the Chicago suburb of Evanston, Illinois, the city council recently approved reparations for the Black residents who suffered decades of economic discrimination.

And what touched off the Tulsa riot is viewed in an entirely new context since last year: the claim that a white woman was attacked by a Black man. On the same day as Floyd's murder in Minneapolis, a white woman in New York's Central Park was caught on cell phone video calling police, claiming to be under attack by a Black man, a lie that saw the woman eventually charged with a crime, and which launched a nickname for others who try the same: "Karens".

And the initial police report on Floyd's death said he died from a medical incident, which was proven a lie by cell phone video and the conviction the ex-officer, Derek Chauvin, who was found guilty of second-degree murder in April.

Tulsa Conflicted

In Tulsa last year, outside the Trump rally, a couple of white young men overheard me mention the Tulsa massacre and yelled out that it was not Tulsans who carried out the massacre, that it was radical outsiders -- the Ku Klux Klan -- that rolled into Greenwood.

Historians are clear that it was Tulsans who did the damage, and recently, the great grandson of Tulsa's founder, W. Tate Brady, himself a member of the Klan, reached out in local Tulsa media outlets, asking for reconciliation. Jeffrey Myers, 68, expressed remorse and said that his great grandfather "was on the wrong side of history".

In churches across Tulsa this weekend, there were prayers for peace and hope for an increased awareness. A couple of new documentaries on the massacre are now shedding even more light.

There was also some tension with the arrival of a Black, armed militia on Saturday demanding reparations for the massacre's victims.

But the seemingly lightning speed on awareness of the massacre in the past year, compared to the previous 99 years of its relative obscurity, brings hope to Reverend Turner.

"My prayer," Reverend Turner told me last year, "is that the more people are made aware about [the massacre] and Juneteenth, that we actually have a society that's more willing to make the changes needed to address the generational effects of them."/agencies

Turkey's agriculture sector registered a 7.5% year-on-year growth in the first quarter of 2021 for the tenth quarter in a row, the country's agriculture and forestry minister said Monday.

If our agricultural growth rate continues in a similar trend, it will beat the 2020 figure, Bekir Pakdemirli said in a statement.

Stressing that the last year's growth was the highest over the last three years, he said the agricultural sector developed for 15 years between 2003 and 2020, marking a 2.99% annual average growth of agriculture in Turkey over the same period.

Turkey's agriculture output posted a 4.8% growth year-on-year in 2020.

The country's agricultural product exports reached $20.7 billion in 2020 with a $5.5 billion surplus, Pakdemirli said./aa

Iran is set to roll out its first indigenously developed vaccine for coronavirus, COV-Iran Barakat, next week after the third and final clinical trial.

Soberana-02 vaccine, jointly developed by Iran and Cuba, has also completed its third clinical trial and is ready for industrial line production.

Health Minister Saeed Namaki on Monday announced that the two homegrown vaccines were being mass-produced and would be administered to people starting next week.

He said the second phase of the vaccine development involving clinical trials had been accomplished, and the third phase involving mass production and injection was presently in progress.

Earlier on Monday, Kianush Jahanpur, head of Iran's food and drugs administration, in a tweet said the good news was “on the way,” referring to COV-Iran and Soberana-02 vaccines.

COV-Iran vaccine, unveiled in December last year, has been developed by state-run Headquarters for Executing the Order of Imam. Its production began late March, followed by clinical trials in late April conducted across the country.

Hassan Jalili, head of the research center producing the vaccine, on Sunday informed that one million doses of COV-Iran Barakat will be produced this month, which will go up to three million next month, 10-12 million by July and 13-15 million by August.

According to Minoo Mohraz, a leading medical expert and member of Iran's task force against COVID-19, the domestically produced COV-Iran vaccine has “high efficiency and immunity”.

On the other hand, Soberana-02, developed by Cuba's Finlay Vaccine Institute and Pasteur Institute of Iran, is the first collaborative project involving transfer of technical knowledge between Iran and Cuba.

Iran, which has recovered from the fourth wave of pandemic, with drop in fresh cases and fatalities, has been slow in its vaccination campaign.

The country began COVID-19 vaccination early February with Russian-made Sputnik V Vaccine. It later received vaccines from China, India, and the WHO's COVAX, a global vaccine sharing scheme, as well.

A total of 3.5 million people have received one jab, while 516,000 have received both jabs, mainly healthcare workers, aged and ailing people.

President Hassan Rouhani on Saturday said the vaccination of people with different ailments will end by late July and the whole population is expected to get vaccinated by November./aa

The Turkish Treasury will repay debts worth 114.3 billion Turkish liras (some $13.45 billion) in the June-August period, the Treasury and Finance Ministry announced on Monday.

The Treasury will repay 19.5 billion Turkish liras ($2.3 billion) in external debts, including 8.5 billion Turkish liras ($1 billion) in interest payments.

For the next three months, 94.8 billion Turkish liras ($11.17 billion) of domestic debt redemption is also projected -- with around 32.7 billion Turkish liras ($3.85 billion) of this amount in interest payments, while the rest in principal payment.

According to the ministry's borrowing strategy, the Treasury will borrow 96 billion Turkish liras ($11.3 billion) from domestic markets in the next three months.

The Treasury projects to hold 22 bond auctions and direct sale of lease certificates -- no planned external borrowing -- in the summer period./aa

As the Turkish economy's first-quarter growth data came out better than expected, economists state this may open the door to an upward revision to their year-end growth forecasts, considering the base effect.

According to the country's statistical authority on Monday, Turkey's economy expanded 7% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2021 amid economic fallout from the coronavirus pandemic.

The figure was well above market expectations as a panel of 16 economists surveyed by the Anadolu Agency on Friday had estimated the Turkish economy would expand by 6.4% on average in the same period, in the January-March period, hovering between 5% and 7.2%.

The country's gross domestic product (GDP) at current prices increased 29.1% to 1.4 trillion Turkish liras ($188.6 billion) in the first quarter of the year, the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) said.

Double-digit growth expected for Q2

"In the second quarter, even if there is a contraction compared to the previous quarter, there will be a double-digit growth of nearly 20% due to the base effect created by the first wave of the epidemic," said Haluk Burumcekci, economist and financial analyst at Anadolu Agency.

The industry and service sector increased the national income in the first quarter, he said, adding private consumption expenditures, investments and net foreign demand also contributed positively to growth.

"The strong course in the first quarter raised the bar for growth," he said, adding the historically high levels reached in both the industrial production index and the national income series show that even if there is a loss of momentum in the rest of the year, the growth will still maintain its strength compared to the same period in 2020.

Also commenting on the data Kerem Alkin, permanent representative of Turkey to the OECD, said he forecasted the economy would grow 5.8% under the worst-case scenario.

"When we look at it today, in a conjuncture where the Eurozone contracted by 1.8% in the first quarter of 2021, Turkey's 7% growth is a privilege," he said.

He also underlined the positive growth performance of China and Turkey distinguishes the two countries positively, adding, "it is noteworthy that Turkey among other OECD countries ended 2020 as the only one that grows positively, and on top of that, high growth continues strongly in 2021."

Meanwhile, Alvaro Ortiz Vidal-Abarca, the chief economist for Turkey at Spanish-based BBVA bank, said on Twitter: "Turkey's GDP grows at 7.0% in Q1 and stays near 23% in the second quarter."

"The data remind us that GDP will grow near or above 6% in 2021 and that controlling Inflation, not growth, should be the priority this year. Only by this will guarantee sustainable growth in 2022."/aa

Lack of exercise and physical inactivity have many negative effects on people and are responsible for 6% of global mortality, said an expert.

Speaking at the virtual 1st National E-Symposium on Physical Activity, Dr. Hulya Kayihan, the head of the Occupational Therapy Department in the Faculty of Health Sciences at Biruni University, said physical inactivity is common worldwide.

“Physical inactivity is the main cause of nearly 21-25% of breast and colon cancer, 27% of diabetes, and 30% of ischemic heart diseases," she said.

Exercise and bodily movement is the most effective and cheapest method to prevent heart diseases, obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, and some types of cancer, the professor said.

"Physical activity makes an individual feel more energetic, more lively, active, and peaceful. It protects and improves health for people with mobility restrictions, and prevents diseases caused by inactivity," Kayihan said./aa

The “Israeli” prime minister attempted to shut down social media after Israeli-national Palestinians held protests against “Israel's” attacks on East Jerusalem and Gaza Strip under blockade, a report said on Sunday.

According to the “Israeli” press, Benjamin Netanyahu attempted to block social media during the attacks on Gaza on May 10-21.

The officials said Netanyahu recommended blocking social media twice, but his suggestions were refused by Israeli Attorney General Avichai Mandelblit and security officials, the report added.

According to the report, Netanyahu probably made the recommendation to prevent a probable riot, claiming that the Palestinian-born “Israelis” organized the protests through the social media platform TikTok.

Meanwhile, Walla News said it was not Netanyahu who recommended blocking social media, but he rather supported a plan offered by security officials.

At least 255 Palestinians were killed, including 66 children and 39 women, and more than 1,900 others injured in 11 days of “Israeli” airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. “Israeli” attacks in the West Bank also killed at least 34 Palestinians since April 13.

The “Israeli” onslaught came to a halt under an Egyptian-brokered truce, which took effect in the early hours of May 21./aa

GAZA CITY, Occupied Palestine

“Israel” has committed massacres against 19 Palestinian families during its 11-day bombardment of the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Health Ministry said on Sunday.

A ministry statement said that 91 Palestinians were killed in these massacres, including 41 children and 25 women.

According to the ministry, 21 members of the Al-Kawlak family were killed in an “Israeli” onslaught on Gaza City, including eight children and six women.

“The Abu Auf family lost nine members, including a child and five women in an “Israeli” bombardment of their house in Gaza City,” the ministry said.

The ministry added that six members of al-Tanani family, including four children and a woman, were also killed in an “Israeli” airstrike on their home in the northern Gaza Strip.

At least 255 Palestinians were killed, including 66 children and 39 women, and more than 1,900 others injured in 11 days of “Israeli” airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. “Israeli” attacks in the West Bank also killed at least 34 Palestinians since April 13.
