A specialist on pediatric infections said some of the claims regarding the effects of COVID-19 vaccines are far from being scientific, adding no vaccine leads to long-lasting side effects.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Prof. Mehmet Ceyhan from Ankara-based Hacettepe University's Department of Medicine explained some questions related to the effects of vaccines.

He stated that all vaccines can cause side effects which may last for a maximum of two to three days, such as rash, stiffening in the area where the vaccine is applied, swelling, fever, fatigue, and sore muscles.

Emphasizing that side effects of medicines are acceptable to a certain extent, he said a different approach is adopted for vaccines.

He said in the case of medicines the person is already ill and will be harmed by the illness to a certain degree. Therefore, you can take the risk of some harms of the medication and give it to patients.

"However, you apply the vaccines on healthy people. A side effect that can make a healthy person ill or that might cause death, cancer or infertility is unacceptable."

He further noted that in case of even the slightest risk, vaccines cannot be administered to humans.

Ceyhan refuted the claims such as mRNA vaccines can have long-term side effects or change the people’s DNA. "This RNA can remain in the body for a maximum of three days, then it is disposed of from the body," he said.

"Besides, as it does not enter the cell, it does not have the chance to change the DNA. Claims like it can have long-lasting side effects are completely devoid of scientific basis," Ceyhan added.

He further stated that SinoVac is an inactive vaccine, which means short-term side effects are seen less often.

As of June 3, at least two billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines have been administered worldwide, according to figures compiled by Our World in Data, a tracking website./aa

The US economy added 559,000 jobs and the unemployment rate fell to 5.8% in May, the Department of Labor announced Friday in a statement.

The market estimate for nonfarm payrolls was an increase of 650,000, while job additions for April were revised up by 12,000, from 266,000 to 278,000, according to data by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The unemployment rate decreased to 5.8% in May, compared to an estimate of 5.9%. It stood at 6.1% in April.

The number of unemployed individuals in the US declined to 9.3 million in May, down from 9.8 million the previous month.

Despite the positive figures, the labor market is still weak in the country, and the Federal Reserve may have to wait longer to raise interest rates until it recovers and full employment is reached.

"Among those not in the labor force who currently want a job, the number of persons marginally attached to the labor force, at 2.0 million, changed little in May but is up by 518,000 since February 2020," the statement said.

Due to COVID-19, more than 22 million people in the world's largest economy lost their jobs in March and April 2020.

President Joe Biden said the positive jobs data report is a result of his administration's fiscal policies.

"None of this success is an accident," he told in a video conference from Rehoboth Beach in the state of Delaware.

"It isn’t luck. It’s due in no small part to the cooperation of the American people, and it’s due in no small part to the bold action we took with the American Rescue Plan," as he referred to the massive $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief plan the Democrats passed in March.

More jobs have ever been created in the first four months in any presidency in modern history, said the president, noting that it is triple the rate of his predecessor Donald Trump.

"This is progress that’s pulling our economy out of the worst crisis in the last 100 years," the president said.

Biden said American economy is expected to grow between 3%-4% this year, according to independent experts, adding Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) increased the projection for US economic growth to 6.9% in 2021.

"That's the fastest pace in nearly four decades," Biden said./aa

Despite the closure of Erada Square, security forces allowed the demonstration called by former MP Saleh Al-Mulla to be held for a one hour in a “cool” atmosphere secured by the air conditioners that the Ministry of Interior deployed at the site, reports Al-Rai daily. Dozens of citizens participated in the demonstration, during which they expressed their anger about the disruption caused to the progress of the country due to the differences between the executive and legislative authorities, according to the letter sent by Al-Mulla to the Ministry of Interior to request for authorizing the demonstration. The protesters raised banners and called for reform led by the general amnesty law and the abolition of the laws that restrict freedom of expression. Some among them also raised banners calling for the naturalization of the Bedoun residents.

The US will not donate coronavirus vaccines to Venezuela due to the Maduro administration’s “lack of transparency,” Washington’s top diplomat to the country said Thursday.

The statement by US Ambassador to Venezuela James Story came after President Joe Biden announced that his administration will donate 80 million vaccine doses to nations in need to “lead the world to end the pandemic.”

"We share these doses not to secure favors or obtain concessions" but "to save lives and lead the world to end the pandemic, with the power of our example and with our values," Biden said in a statement.

In Latin America, the vaccines will be distributed through the World Health Organization’s COVAX facility, a mechanism created to provide vaccines to developing nations.

The story noted that the US’s decision to exclude Venezuela from the list is not permanent and that the country could be included in future donations.

"It is only in this first round that Venezuela does not enter this list because it lacks transparency in the delivery of vaccines for people in need," he said.

Venezuela’s Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza responded by declaring that Washington’s actions “demonstrate their continued hatred towards the Venezuelan people.”

“The inhumane restrictions of their illegal sanctions in the midst of a pandemic and stealing the funds and assets of Venezuela are not enough for them. With these types of opinions, they only demonstrate their continued hatred towards the Venezuelan people. Too much misery of spirit,” Arreaza said./aa

US stocks closed lower on Thursday with high volatility and the dollar index continuing to climb.

The Dow Jones was down 23 points to end at 34,577, as the blue-chip index snapped a five-day winning streak.

The S&P 500 fell 15 points to 4,192. Tesla plummeted 5.5% after reports indicated that the electric carmaker's orders in China almost halved to 9,800 in May, from more than 18,000 in April.

The Nasdaq was off 141 to 13,614 with AMC Entertainment plummeting a massive 18% as the movie theater chain said it sold shares, taking advantage of its stock price soaring in recent days with internet memes. Blackberry, another meme stock, saw a 3.9% gain.

Investors turned toward Treasury notes and the dollar as safer bets in a highly volatile session.

The VIX volatility index gained around 10% at one point to as high as 19.27 before settling to 18.04 -- a 3.2% gain at the close of markets.

The yield on the 10-year US Treasury was up 2.3% to 1.628%. The dollar index, which shows the strength of the greenback against a basket of six major currencies, continued its increase -- adding 0.6% to 90.48./aa

The Canadian government released its plan Thursday to address the tragedy of as many as 4,000 missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG).

The government promised a CAN$2.2 billion fund to reach goals suggested by the National Inquiry into the (MMIWG).

The inquiry compiled a 1,200-page report given to the government two years ago that contained 213 recommendations.

The country is still reeling from the discovery last week of 215 children's bodies in unmarked graves at a former Indian residential school and the document released Thursday allocated $27 million to Indigenous communities to help in the search for graves at 138 other residential schools. The United Nations called for a full probe into the discovery.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said in a televised address Thursday that the missing women were a "national tragedy" and vowed to "end violence against Indigenous women and girls."

In regards to the MMIWG report and the children's bodies at the British Columbia residential school, Trudeau said Canada is "no longer trying to hide" the truth.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police reported in 2014 that more than 1,000 Indigenous women and girls were killed or went missing between 1980 and 2012.

In some cases, investigations were incomplete because of racist and lackadaisical attitudes.

But the Native Women's Association of Canada said the number is actually nearer to 4,000 but incomplete data makes the number hard to determine.

The MMIWG report contained a number of short-term goals set by the government.

They included a public campaign to explain the issues experienced by Indigenous people, a national task force to look at unresolved cases of the missing and murdered women and girls and a structure put in place to represent families and survivors of residential schools. About 150,000 Indigenous children were taken from their parents and put into the schools beginning in the 1820s. The idea was to cancel out native culture.

But the MMIWG plan does not contain all the government hopes to achieve.

"The national action plan is not intended to be a final plan but one that is evergreen (continually evolving) and requires monitoring and reporting on progress, as well as further co-development (with Indigenous peoples) and course correction as required," the report states.

However, critics said the plan lacks specific actions, as well as financial commitments for families of the missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls.

Ahead of the report's release on Wednesday, members of the Native Women's Association of Canada walked away from what they termed a "fundamentally flawed" process, CTV News reported./aa

A multi-hazard emergency looms large following the recent volcanic eruption in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) warned on Thursday.

Mt. Nyiragongo, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, erupted on May 22 and spewed out a river of lava that eventually flowed east toward neighboring Rwanda, killing more than 30 people and causing enormous damage along the way.

According to the IFRC, some 80,000 people have been displaced in the DRC and Rwanda, and it has launched an emergency appeal for 11.6 million Swiss francs (over $12.2 million).

“The danger is not over, and more work lies ahead. While volcanic activity seems to have subsided, the recent eruption has left a trail of immense humanitarian needs,” Mohammed Omer Mukhier, IFRC regional director for Africa, said in a statement.

“Hundreds have lost their homes and they urgently need shelter, food, clean water, and healthcare. Families have also been separated amid the chaos that followed the eruption.”

Karamaga Apollinaire, the secretary-general of the Rwanda Red Cross, said the organization has “had to manage the influx and the destruction of property caused by the continuous earthquakes” in the town of Rubavu, where many Congolese sought refuge after the eruption.

“Schools, homes, markets, and water lines have been destroyed, and residents are being evacuated to safer grounds,” he said.

UNICEF said on Wednesday that more than 1,300 children were separated from their parents in the chaos that followed the eruption of Mt. Nyiragongo.

To date, 858 children have been reunited with their families, the UN body said on Twitter./aa

The number of mosques continues to grow at a steady pace across the US, according to a report that identified 2,769 mosques in 2020.

"This represents a 31% increase from the 2010 count of 2,106," said the report, "The American Mosque 2020: Growing and Evolving," released Wednesday.

"Undoubtedly, the primary driving force for the increase of mosques is the steady expansion of the population of Muslims in America due to immigration and birth rate," it added.

The primary sponsors of the survey include the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), Center on Muslim Philanthropy, Institute for Social Policy and Understanding (ISPU) and the Association of Statisticians of American Religious Bodies (ASARB).

The number of mosque participants also grew, according to the report.

Weekly Friday prayer averaged 410 attendees in 2020, as compared to 353 in 2010 -- a 16% increase.

"Almost three-fourths (72%) of mosques recorded a 10% or more increase in Jum’ah attendance," said the report.

But conversions to Islam in mosques declined "dramatically."

"From 15.3 converts per mosque in 2010, the average number of converts in 2020 is 11.3," it said. "The primary reason is the decline in African American converts, especially in African American mosques."

In addition, mosques are becoming more suburban, according to the report that cites major declines that occurred in the number of mosques located in towns or small cities and downtown areas of large cities.

Mosques in towns and small cities declined from 20% in 2010 to 6% in 2020.

"The apparent cause is the dwindling population of Muslims in these towns/small cities due to the drying up of jobs in these areas and the moves of young adults, children of mosque founders, and activists to large cities for education and jobs," said the report.

"In 2010, 17% of mosques were found in downtown areas, but in 2020 that figure is down to 6%. This decrease is most probably tied to the decrease of African American mosques and the general move of mosques to suburban locations," said the report./aa

Families in Turkey whose children have been abducted or forcibly recruited by the PKK terrorist organization continued their sit-in on Thursday.

The families in the southeastern province of Diyarbakir have been protesting since Sept. 3, 2019, for 640 days, encouraging their children to give up their weapons and surrender to Turkish authorities.

Protests outside the office of the opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) in the Diyarbakir province started with three mothers who said their children had been forcibly recruited by the terrorists. The Turkish government says the HDP has links to the PKK terrorist organization.

Guzide Demir, one of the protesting mothers, said she wants to reunite with her son as she has not heard from him for six years.

“We want our children from HDP. They kidnapped our children. We hold them responsible. We are determined, will continue our struggle,” said Demir, calling on her son to surrender to the security forces.

Hatice Levent, another mother at the sit-in, said she has come to the protest from the northwestern province of Kutahya for her daughter Fadime Levent.

Stating that she missed her daughter, she said: “My daughter, your place is with me. I’m begging you to return.”

“Free our children. Take your hands off them. We won’t leave without taking back our children,” she said. “Fadime, your siblings missed you so much. I miss you calling me Mom.”

Sirnak

Emine Ustek, a mother at the sit-in, said she keeps protesting for her son, who was taken to the mountains six years ago when he was just 15.

“HDP took my son. My protest will continue until he comes back,” said Ustek, calling on her son to surrender to the security forces.

“Our suffering is killing us. Enough is enough, please come back home,” she added.

Hatice Atan, the head of the Association of Women Who Shed Light on the Future, also stated that that they would continue their righteous struggle.

“The Diyarbakir mothers started a ripple effect. Families in eastern Mus, Hakkari, and Van, and western Izmir provinces have started their actions and continue with determination. With the determination of our mothers, we will achieve this," she said.

Van

In the province of Van, grieving families, whose children were kidnapped by YPG/PKK terrorists, have been staging a rally since Feb. 27 for 97 days so far.

They marched to the HDP office shouting slogans against the PKK terror organization.

The families, hopeful that more families will be reunited with their children as a result of persuasion efforts by security forces, joined the protest in Van and called for their children to surrender.

The protesting families have increased to 32.

Gullu Eregli, one of the mothers in the anti-PKK protest, said that her son, who had dreams of being a teacher, was deceived and kidnapped by HDP.

Noting that HDP stole her son’s dreams, mother Eregli said: “We want my son from HDP.”

“I’m also calling on all the mothers. Come, ask for your own children. Armenia, US and Russia support them, and want to divide this country,” said Eregli.

Nazli Sancar, another mother, said her daughter was kidnapped in 2012.

“I’ve been feeling this pain for years and have no power to hold on, anymore. There is no description of the grief of losing a child. We put our heads to the pillow every night crying,” said Sancar.

“By the will of God and the power of our state, we will take back our children. We are determined, will not even take a step back until we reunite with our children. We’ve continued our protest for 13 weeks now, … and we’re growing like an avalanche every week.”/aa
