Does Islam expect a wife to remain silent when she disagrees with her husband? Sheikh Amgad Samir argues that marriage should leave room for discussion, disagreement and sincere advice and points to a remarkable moment from the Prophet’s ﷺ life. A report in Sahih al-Bukhari describes how women of the Ansar were known to speak back to their husbands, while the wives of the Prophet ﷺ also expressed disagreement with him at times. The clearest example comes from the Treaty of Hudaybiyyah. After the treaty, the Prophet ﷺ instructed his Companions to sacrifice their animals and shave their heads. Overwhelmed by what had happened, none initially rose to act. The Prophet ﷺ then consulted Umm Salamah. She advised him to go out, say nothing further, sacrifice his own animal and have his head shaved. He followed her advice. When the Companions saw him act, they immediately followed. The incident is recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari. The lesson is not that one gender’s opinion is automatically better than the other’s. It is simpler: Wisdom should be heard wherever it comes from.
