At least 30 militants died when landmines they were preparing exploded in a mosque in Afghanistan’s northern Balkh province, authorities said on Saturday.

The dead include 24 Taliban insurgents and six foreign militants, the Afghan National Army’s 209 Shaheen Corps said in a statement.

The explosion occurred when the insurgents were making landmines during a training session in a mosque in Qiltaan village in the restive Dawlatabad district of the province bordering Uzbekistan, the statement said.

The Taliban, however, refuted the claim, saying in a statement that a landmine exploded inside an empty room and there were no casualties.

Zabihullah Mujahid, the group’s spokesperson, accused Afghan forces of carrying out an air and ground raid on a mosque in the neighboring Sholgara district.

He said the mosque’s prayer leader was killed in the attack.

Mohammad Haneef, an army spokesperson, told Anadolu Agency that an operation was conducted in Sholgara on Friday evening in which five Taliban were killed and six more arrested.

Violence has escalated in Afghanistan over recent days, with multiple bomb blasts in the capital Kabul this week killing a senior police officer and a number of civilians.

In a social media post, Vice President Amrullah Saleh blamed the Taliban for the string of bombings and vowed to exact revenge.

This comes as Gen. Kenneth McKenzie, the head of the US Central Command, said this week that the level of violence in Afghanistan remains “too high” and the US is reviewing the peace deal signed with the Taliban last year.

In line with the February 2020 deal, which calls for the withdrawal of all foreign troops by May this year, the US has cut down its number of troops in Afghanistan to around 2,500.

The pact, though, seems to be under threat as the Taliban, who had promised to reduce attacks, are blamed by both Washington and Kabul for the increasing violence./aa

Turkey's National Defense Ministry on Saturday said Turkish soldiers left food for mountain goats starving due to extreme weather conditions in the southeastern Hakkari province.

"Our soldiers who noticed the starving mountain goats, unable to find food due to snow on the Sumbul Mountain of Hakkari, on the way to an operation airdropped food with the support of the Nature Conservation and National Parks Directorate," said the ministry on Twitter./aa

COBANBEY, Syria

At least one civilian was killed and 12 others injured in a bomb blast in northern Syria on Saturday, local sources said.

Terrorists blew up an explosives-laden vehicle in a crowded market in Cobanbey town in Aleppo province, the sources said.

Shops in the area were heavily damaged and firefighters battled to douse blazes sparked by the blast.

The injured have been transferred to hospitals in the town and security forces have secured the area and started investigations, the sources said.

Security officials at the blast site said the attack may have been carried out by the YPG/PKK terror group, according to the sources.

Terrorists were eliminated from Aleppo during Turkey’s Operation Euphrates Shield in 2016.

Since 2016, Turkey has launched a trio of successful anti-terror operations across its border in northern Syria to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and to enable the peaceful settlement of residents: Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019).

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the EU – has been responsible for the deaths of 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants. The YPG is the PKK’s Syrian offshoot./aa

Even as Yemen continues shocking the world, with its images of deaths, destruction, and starvation, one of its citizens Ali Azzawri is part of a Turkish scientific team rolling out a vaccine against the COVID-19.

Azzawri, 39, was selected by the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey known as TUBITAK in May 2020 to be part of a team of 13 scientists to indigenously develop Messenger RNA vaccines -- also called mRNA vaccines to combat the pandemic.

According to experts, these are new types of vaccines, who direct cells to make a particular protein to trigger an immune response. Other vaccines, instead put a weakened or inactivated germ into human bodies to activate the immune system.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Azzawri said the vaccine development was at an advanced stage in Turkey, although the work on it started late. He said Turkey was currently among the top countries researching in this field.

“My team in Selcuk University started working in the middle of June last year as the only team in Turkey and the Middle East that uses mRNA technology, which is the same technology used by the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine,” he said.

Azzawri’s wife and children are currently living in Yemen and due to war, he has not been able to visit them over the past two years.

“Turkey’s first mRNA vaccine was developed a month-and-a-half ago and because of our non-stop work, the vaccine is currently at the animal testing phase and expected to be ready for human use soon,” he added.

He is the only foreigner in the team developing and testing the crucial vaccine. He said Turkey over the years has attained a significant advancement in the scientific fields.

“Turkey, in recent years, has witnessed a great development and progress in the research field, and Turkish universities and research centers have a good infrastructure and qualified scientists,” he said.

Competent hand

The head of the vaccine project Dr. Nadir Kocak, praised Azzawi, describing him as a competent hand in the molecular techniques used in this vaccine project.

“We benefited a lot from his knowledge and experience in these techniques. He made important contributions to our project with his hard work and discipline,” he told Anadolu Agency.

“We never use discrimination based on race or belief. Working together for humanity has been our main goal. We aim to do our best for humanity in this difficult period,” he added.

Over the past nine months, working round the clock the team is racing to roll out the vaccine, by adhering to all international norms of testing procedures.

“Work on the project is carried out around the clock. The concept of fixed working hours has disappeared from our lives. Sometimes we do not leave the laboratory for days. Our family time has become very limited,” said Azzawri.

The Yemeni born scientist had previously worked as a teaching assistant at Dhamar University in Yemen. Since 2010, he has been living in Konya where he finished his master's and a doctorate from Selcuk University. He has also worked as a lecturer at Diyarbakir University until he was selected to be part of a vaccine project in the middle of 2020.

Just a month after they started working on the project, Azzawri’s team was included in the list of candidate vaccines by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Turkish vaccine candidates

Kocak said Turkey has already three other vaccines, which are undergoing human trials. He said although his team started 3-4 months behind other teams, they are already in the final stages of animal testing.

“We want to be highly confident of the vaccine’s effectiveness before starting human trials,” he added.

According to procedures as set by the WHO, an experimental vaccine is first tested in animals to evaluate its safety and potential to prevent disease. It is then tested in human clinical trials, in three phases.

Turkey began its mass COVID-19 vaccination campaign on Jan. 14, starting with healthcare workers along with top officials to encourage public confidence in the vaccines, and then moving to older individuals.

According to the Turkish Health Ministry, over 2 million people have been vaccinated, including frontline health workers so far.

“Even though we are not using the actual virus in our experiments nor we are directly exposed to it, some of our team members were infected at different times due to their social connections outside the lab,” said Azzawri, highlighting the dangers.

“As most of our time is spent in the hospital, we, like the rest of the medical staff, are more vulnerable to get infected. I did not show any symptoms yet, but the possibility of getting infected still exists,” he added.

Family back in Yemen

Living with his sick mother, who came to Turkey for treatment and is not able to return to Yemen due to lockdown and war, Azzawri said punishing schedules at the laboratory, do not allow him to spend much time with his mother.

He had planned to visit his family in Yemen last summer, but after being selected to be part of the team to develop the vaccine, he canceled plans to visit the family.

“I have devoted myself to the project, considering the ambitious goal we have and the sacrifice needed,” he said.

Asked about the situation of COVID-19 in Yemen, Azzawri said he feels sad about the situation in his country. He said people in his country may have gained a herd immunity, because of fighting with more than four strains of coronavirus, especially the MERS strain, which had spread in Yemen during the past nine years.

“This provided a good immunity to the majority of the people in Yemen. But with poor healthcare system in the country, the situation is still dangerous if new strains break out,” he added.

According to the US-based Johns Hopkins Coronavirus Resource Center Yemen has so far reported 2,134 infections with 616 deaths. As many as 1,426 infected people recovered as well. But experts believe the number could be higher as there have been low rates of testing in the country -- the second-largest Arab sovereign state at the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula in Western Asia./aa

The family of Emir Abdelkader, a resistance leader against French colonialism, rejected building a statue in his honor in France on Friday.

Abdelkader’s grandson, Mohamed Boutaleb, told Anadolu Agency: "We reject the construction of a statue of the emir in France, where he was imprisoned and held hostage."

The comments came after French historian Benjamin Stora submitted a report Jan. 20 on the memory of colonization and Algerian war to President Emmanuel Macron, in which he recommended building a statue of Abdelkader.

Prince Abdelkader (1808-1883) was a politician, military man and one of the leaders of Algerian resistance to French colonialism in the 19th century.

"We have prepared an electronic petition to collect signatures to reject the proposal contained in the French report ... because it is in the interest of France, not Algeria," said Boutaleb said.

"The name of the Algerian emir is known internationally and his political and resistant standing does not need a statue in France, which occupied his country for 132 years," he said. "France claims that Emir Abdelkader came to it for the sake of tourism, but the truth is that he was subjected to imprisonment, hostage detention and assassination attempts with other prisoners in this country.”

Boutaleb called on his country's authorities to intervene to stop what he called a "French maneuver" to falsify the history of one of the most prominent symbols of the Algerian resistance.

More than 1,600 people including historians, researches, journalists and politicians signed an online petition against building the statue.

Algerian authorities said 5 million people were killed during the French colonial era from 1830 to 1962. The period also witnessed campaigns of displacement and plundering of wealth, as well as the theft of thousands of documents and historical and archaeological pieces, including those dating to the Ottoman era (1515-1830).

Abdelkader is described as the founder of the Algerian state. He was a writer, poet, philosopher, politician and fighter against French colonial forces.

In 1847, he was imprisoned in France and remained in prison until 1852, then he settled in Istanbul, before Damascus until his death in 1883 at the age of 76.

In 1965, his body was transferred to Algeria and buried in the capital, Algiers./aa

The US Agency for International Development (USAID) redirected $42.4 million in assistance Friday in response to Myanmar military’s actions that constituted a coup.

“As a result [of the military coup], USAID is immediately redirecting $42.4 million of assistance away from work that would have benefited the Government of Burma. Rather than supporting the military, we will redirect these funds to support and strengthen civil society,” said an agency statement provided by the US Embassy in Dhaka.

US President Joe Biden described the coup as a “direct assault on the country’s transition to democracy and the rule of law,” it said. “The people of Burma have struggled for too long and made too many sacrifices for the military to erase this progress in such an undemocratic manner.”

USAID will continue to support the people of Burma with approximately $69 million in bilateral programs, it said.

The US will also continue to provide life-saving humanitarian assistance to Rohingya and other vulnerable populations including in Chin, Kachin, Rakhine and Shan states, as well as the region, the statement continued.

USAID’s support to the people of Burma is more important than ever as we collectively work toward a more democratic, accountable, and inclusive society.

The US sanctioned 10 Myanmar military officials Thursday for their roles in the overthrow of the civilian government. Among those designated are Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing, and his deputy Soe Win.

Background

Myanmar's military declared a state of emergency Feb. 1, hours after detaining de facto leader and State Counsellor Suu Kyi and senior members of the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD).

The coup took place hours before the first session of the country's new parliament was set to convene following elections in November, in which the NLD made sweeping gains.

The military claimed the coup was staged due to "election fraud" in the polls that it said resulted in the dominance of the NLD in parliament.

The UN Human Rights Council said it is “closely” following events./aa

Argentina has surpassed 50,000 COVID-19 deaths with over 2 million confirmed cases, according to the Ministry of Health on Friday.

The ministry's death toll now stands at 50,029 deaths.

Argentina registered its first case on March 3, 2020, after a 43-year old man who arrived in the country following a two-week vacation in northern Italy.

On March 7, the ministry confirmed the first coronavirus death, a 64-year-old man who had travelled to Paris and had other health conditions. In response to the disease, Argentine President Alberto Fernandez implemented a strict lockdown on March 20.

He acknowledged there would be economic consequences for a country already experiencing a deep economic recession.

However, Fernandez insisted on the priority of saving lives over protecting the economy from the coronavirus impact.

“Faced with the dilemma of preserving the economy or life, we do not hesitate - we choose life,” he said.

The capital of Buenos Aires and surrounding areas were hard-hit with COVID-19 initially, although the virus spread across the nation, impacting areas with fewer resources, ICU units and health professionals hardest.

Argentina experienced one of the longest coronavirus-lockdowns worldwide.

Close to half of Buenos Aires households lost income, according to data from the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses of Argentina (INDEC).

On Nov. 6, the government announced the end of the lockdown in Buenos Aires, despite restrictions in some provinces.

In its vaccine response, Argentina has largely relied on Russia's Sputnik V vaccine, receiving its first shipment towards the end of December 2020.

To date, Argentina has received three shipments from Moscow, around 820,000 doses in total.

On the ground in response to combating COVID-19, Argentina has been prioritizing the vaccination of front-line health professionals while distributing vaccines nationwide.

In January 2021, it approved Sputnik V for use in people over 60 years old alongside younger age groups.

Both Fernandez and Vice-President Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner were vaccinated with their first of two doses of Sputnik V in January.

Nevertheless, the shipments have fallen short with the Argentine government having been promised 5 million doses by the end of January 2021.

On Feb. 2, Argentina requested help from Russia to ensure the enough supply of vaccines to the country.

In addition to Sputnik V, Argentina is set to receive further doses from the UN's Covax initiative and from both AstraZeneca and Oxford University after reaching a deal.

On Feb. 9, Argentine health minister signed an emergency decree for the use of Indian-made Covishield vaccine, which can be kept at regular temperatures unlike Sputnik V.

Around 11 months after the first case, Argentina, with a population close to 45 million is ranked 12th worldwide for number of COVID-19 cases..aa

The number of coronavirus cases in South Africa has exceeded 1,487,000, the country’s health ministry said Friday.

A total of 288 patients have died from the virus in the last 24 hours, taking the figure to 46,670, the ministry said.

The country conducted more than 8.6 million tests while 1,383,626 people recovered from the virus.

South Africa reported a coronavirus variant that spread faster than before was identified there and several nations, including Turkey, halted flights to the country./aa

A new government online interface activated Friday will enable victims of discrimination, racism and sexism to fight and seek just in France.

The antidiscriminiations.fr website and 3928 telephone line, was launched by Elisabeth Moreno, minister delegate to the prime minister in charge of equality, diversity and equal opportunities. She is also the only member of color in the government.

The initiative stems from President Emmanuel Macron’s announcement last December for an online survey where accusers can register complaints of discrimination against police and record why and in what ways they were prejudiced.

Following an incident of police violence against a black music producer, Macron characterized the “unbearable” racial profiling by law enforcement officials.

On Friday, Macron did not mention police or racial injustice but said “every kind of discrimination is a humiliation, a violence.”

He said the platform will allow victims to flag various situations of discrimination, whether it is in getting a job or a promotion, access to housing, service or control and check or supervision by the government.

There are 25 parameters people can file a discrimination case.

According to the 2019 data from the Defender of Rights, an independent administrative authority, the highest form with more than 24% was recorded based on nationality/ That was followed by handicap at 22%, gender was 12%, health at 10% and age was 5%.

The platform allows victims to get in touch with experienced lawyers specialized in fighting discrimination, who will guide them on mediation and facilitate steps to pursue administratively or legally./aa

US President Joe Biden aims to close the controversial military prison at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba by the end of his term in the office, White House press secretary said Friday.

"That certainly is the goal, and our intention," Jen Psaki responded to a reporter when she was asked about the timeline for shutting down the detention camp.

Psaki noted that there is a number of key policy roles that still need to be filled within the inter-agency, including departments of defense, state and justice, to make such a move.

"There will be a robust inter-agency process but certainly having those individuals in place will help it move forward," she added.

The US has long drawn criticism for its use of the prison where inmates are held without charge, and where a well-documented history of torture has been chronicled.

The notorious prison was opened by former President George W. Bush in 2002 after of 9/11 attacks.

During his two terms, former President Barack Obama's attempt to close the facility was thwarted by congressional restrictions as well as the difficulty of reducing the number of 242 prisoners to zero./aa
