Turkish security forces defused a bomb planted in a truck in Syria’s northern Jerablus region, bordering Türkiye, the Turkish Interior Ministry said on Saturday.

According to the ministry, police received a tip that the truck carrying a bomb was left on June 21 in the border town by PKK/YPG terrorists to be used in terror activities.

A bomb disposal squad reached the site and defused the bomb.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US, UK and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of over 40,000 people, including women, children and infants./aa

Health officials in Colombia confirmed its first three cases of monkeypox Friday in adults who traveled from Europe.

Two cases were found in the national capital of Bogota, while a third was reported in Medellin.

Monkeypox has been reported in 6 Latin American countries and the World Health Organization (WHO) said more than 3,200 cases of the disease are in 48 nations.

Argentina was the first Latin American country to confirm the disease, followed by Mexico, Brazil, Venezuela and Chile.

The Argentine Health Ministry reported May 27 that two people -- one from Argentina and one from Spain -- tested positive after having suspicious symptoms.

One day later, Mexico reported its first "imported" case when a 50-year-old man who lives in New York City “was probably infected in the Netherlands," said health officials.

On June 9, Brazil confirmed its first case in a 41-year-old man who had traveled to Spain and Portugal and was admitted to a hospital in Sao Paulo.

Venezuela reported its first case June 13 in a patient who also came from Spain.

Chile confirmed monkeypox June 17. Health officials said it was detected in a young adult who had traveled to Europe and presented symptoms related to the disease.

The World Health Organization is considering whether to declare monkeypox a global emergency, which would give it the same distinction as the coronavirus pandemic and require a global response.

Monkeypox has so far primarily affected men who have sex with men but experts warn anyone in close contact with an infected person or their clothing could be at risk for infection. It could begin with fever, enlarged lymph nodes, back pain and muscle aches before a rash appears on the skin.

WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said monkeypox is likely more widespread than official numbers indicate and urged vigilance.

“Person-to-person transmission is ongoing and is likely underestimated,” he said./agencies

US won’t stay a mute spectator to the persecution of country’s 200 million Muslims, said the IAMC

A coalition of six organizations will hold a peaceful protest and rally in response to the ‘blasphemous attacks’ on Prophet Muhammad and the persecution of 200 million Muslims in India, illegal arrests, and unlawful demolition of Muslim houses in India, a press note from the Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC) informed.

The protest is scheduled to be held at the Consulate General of India in Houston, United States from 3:00 to 6:00 PM.

“The condition of Muslims in India has become alarming. Aided by the police and judiciary, the Indian government continues its brutal crackdown against its own Muslim citizens. In just the past month, Muslims in India have been killed, arbitrarily detained, and had their houses unlawfully demolished, while members of the ruling party BJP have insulted Prophet Muhammed (PBUH) on public television,” a press note from IAMC said.

The organisation further said that Muslim journalists are also at risk of being imprisoned for exposing hate against Muslims through their journalism.

“Fahad Shah, the founder of The Kashmir Walla, has been arrested. Mohammad Zubair, co-founder of AltNews has had multiple charges filed against him. On June 10, two teenage Muslim boys were shot dead by police in the state of Jharkhand for peacefully protesting against the disparaging remarks against Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). On June 11, family members of prominent Muslim activist Afreen Fatima were illegally arrested, and their home was unlawfully demolished.” IAMC said.

IAMC further informed that the Indian American communities in Dallas and California held protests for the same cause.

This protest is being organized by Indian American Muslim Council (IAMC), Islamic Circle of North America (ICNA), Islamic Society of Greater Houston (ISGH), Council of American Islamic Relations (CAIR), Muslim American Society (MAS), and Muslim Ummah of North America (MUNA).

Countries need to provide the necessary material and legal conditions to enable health personnel to assess, report, and document torture and cruel or inhumane treatment, human rights experts from the UN's three anti-torture mechanisms said on Friday.

Experts issued their statement for the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, June 26, stressing the vital functions of healthcare professionals in preventing and punishing acts of torture and supporting victims.

"Medical and healthcare professionals have a critical role to play in preventing and holding States accountable for torture and rehabilitating torture survivors," they said in the statement.

In times of armed conflict, medical staff must be protected under customary rules of international humanitarian law, said the UN groups.

Though they stopped short of naming any nations in particular, the issue has arisen in the wake of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War.

"States must ensure that all detainees have medical examinations immediately after arrest," said Suzanne Jabbour, chairperson of the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture.

"Authorities also need to document and investigate torture and its sequelae to prevent its recurrence and fight impunity. It is fundamental to make perpetrators accountable for their actions and provide justice and rehabilitation to the victims."

They said that general practitioners, forensic doctors, nurses, psychiatrists, psychologists, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals are often the first to detect signs of torture through their daily contact with patients or when certifying deaths.

"At the United Nations Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture, we have witnessed the life-altering and often chronic consequences of torture on survivors' mental and physical health that can be transmitted across generations," the experts said.

The joint statement was issued by the UN Committee against Torture, the UN Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture, and the Board of Trustees of the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture./agencies

The British prime minister on Friday announced over £370 million ($454 million) for global food security this year and deplored the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war on global food supplies.

“One of the greatest affronts to everything we stand for, including good governance and rule of law, is Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and Putin’s blockage of ports that would otherwise be shipping food for the world’s poorest people,” Boris Johnson said at the 26th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Rwanda’s capital Kigali.

“We will invest over £370 million in global food security this year, including £130 million to the World Food Program. We want to work alongside our Commonwealth friends to understand your priorities and to deliver joint solutions,” he said.

Johnson also urged the Commonwealth countries to enroll girls in school and empower them to play their part in the economy when they leave school.

“If I could imagine the silver bullet that will solve an array of problems and transform countless lives it will be to give every girl in the world the chance to go to school,” he said.

Transforming societies

Held under the theme “Delivering a Common Future: Connecting, Innovating, Transforming,” the heads of governments from 54 Commonwealth countries are discussing ways how the contemporary Commonwealth can transform societies.

Johnson, meanwhile, handed over the baton as Commonwealth Chair-in-Office to Rwanda’s President Paul Kagame, noting that “for all the differences between us, we are united by an invisible thread of shared values, history, and friendship.”

“Over the Queen's 70 years of service, the Commonwealth has grown in number, and scope of ambition. The fact CHOGM 2022 is in Rwanda, with no historic connection to the British Empire, expresses our choice to reimagine a Commonwealth for a changing world,” Kagame told the gathering.

Rwanda became a member of the grouping in 2009. While it is an association of former British colonies, Rwanda, like Mozambique which joined in 1995, was not colonized by the British.

Patricia Scotland, the secretary-general of the Commonwealth, said the association is a place where “people come together, work together and where no voice is louder or more important than any other.”

CHOGM is customarily held every two years and is the Commonwealth’s highest consultative and policy-making gathering.

At a meeting in London in 2018, the Commonwealth leaders selected Rwanda as the host for their next summit, but the meeting was postponed twice due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Earlier, on his arrival in Rwanda this week, Johnson visited the Kigali genocide memorial site to pay tribute to victims of the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi ethnic group in which more than 1 million lives were lost.

“It has been utterly shocking to see these images, and so many physical memorials, of the appalling and inexplicable genocide against the Tutsis,” Johnson wrote in the visitors’ book.

Speaking at a business forum on Thursday, Johnson had announced the United Kingdom will offer £160 million ($171 million) for hydropower investments in Africa to help economies on the continent.

He also met with President Kagame and discussed the existing partnerships between Rwanda and the UK, including the controversial migrants deal./aa

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday warned of an "unprecedented global hunger crisis," saying next year could be worse.

"The war in Ukraine has compounded problems that have been brewing for years: climate disruption, the COVID-19 pandemic, and the deeply unequal recovery," Guterres told in an address to the UN Ministerial Conference on food security.

"There is a real risk that multiple famines will be declared in 2022. And 2023 could be even worse," he added.

He recalled his visit to the Sahel region of Africa last month, during which he said he was warned by leaders there a "dangerous situation could turn into a catastrophe" unless immediate action is taken.

He said the Horn of Africa is also suffering its worst drought in decades.

In the past two years, the number of severely food insecure people around the world has more than doubled to 276 million, according to the World Food Programme.

Guterres said fertilizers and energy prices rose in the past year, which he said would impact all harvests including rice and corn. It is feared to affect billions of people across Asia, Africa and the Americas.

"This year's food access issues could become next year's global food shortage," he said. "No country will be immune to the social and economic repercussions of such a catastrophe."/aa

US House passed a bipartisan gun control bill on Friday, sending it to President Joe Biden's desk.

The bill cleared the Senate floor on Thursday evening, by a vote of 65-33, one month after a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas, which left 19 students and two teachers dead.

The bill passed the House floor 234-193; with 14 Republicans voting along with all Democrats in favor.

While the bill does not tackle many of the proposals pushed by House Democrats and Biden – like raising the age to purchase a gun, banning assault weapons, and expanding universal background checks – it does establish a significant gun policy achievement between Republicans and Democrats that has not been seen in almost 30 years.

The bill still calls for expanded background checks, which includes juvenile and mental health records to be part of federal background checks for gun buyers aged 18 to 20.

It also closes the so-called "boyfriend loophole" in which convicted domestic violence offenders will now be denied guns if they have committed violent crimes against their spouses.

The measure would also strengthen "red flag" laws helping authorities get court orders to temporarily remove guns from people deemed dangerous.

"With this bipartisan package, we take the first steps to fight back on behalf of the American people who desperately want new measures to keep communities safe in the high numbers in the polling," House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said.

"To those who lacked the courage to join in this work, I say your political survival is insignificant compared to the survival of our children," she added.

The bill now heads to Biden for his signature to make it law./aa

The US on Friday repatriated a Guantanamo Bay prisoner to his home country of Afghanistan after a federal court ruled the US no longer has a legal basis to detain him.

The Pentagon announced the transfer of Asadullah Haroon al-Afghani from Guantanamo Bay prison after the US District Court of Columbia's ruling that there was no longer any legal basis to justify his continued detention.

Al-Afghani, also known as Gul, was not charged with any war crimes and held for 15 years without a trial.

"Previously, on October 7, 2021 the Periodic Review Board (PRB), a body comprised of senior career officials from the Departments of Defense, State, Justice, and Homeland Security; and the offices of the Director of National Intelligence and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff; determined Mr. Gul to be eligible for transfer," said Pentagon in a statement.

"The United States thanks the Government of Qatar for its assistance in this matter," it added.

The Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB) on Friday signed an agreement with Poland to provide a record €450 million ($474.5 million) loan to support over 4 million Ukrainian refugees in the country.

The loan agreement was signed by CEB Governor Carlo Monticelli and Polish Finance Minister Magdalena Rzeczkowska, said a statement issued by the EU financial institution.

The CEB's largest-ever loan is expected to help support Poland's efforts to deal with the massive influx of Ukrainians fleeing Russia's war on their territory.

"The size of the loan that we signed today demonstrates CEB's unequivocal determination to support Poland timely and effectively to overcome an unprecedented economic challenge and a human tragedy,” said Monticelli.

"In that respect we are very pleased that our loan is designed to address the evolving needs of displaced people and their host communities, involving both government institutions and civil society," he added.

Rzeczkowska, for her part, emphasized that the loan related to the support provided by the Polish authorities to the Ukrainian civilians fleeing the war is the "best example" of the CEB's ability to assist member countries when needed.

Poland currently hosts over 4 million displaced people from Ukraine, mainly women, children and the elderly.

Founded in 1956, the CEB has 42 member states and aims to consistently support timely and effective responses to relieve suffering and restore dignity to refugees and migrants.

At least 4,677 civilians have been killed in Ukraine since the war started on Feb. 24, according to the UN.

Over 14 million people have been forced to flee their homes, including more than 8 million that have fled to other countries, according to UN figures./aa
