While the aging population is among the key issues in Greece, statistics reveal that the country's demographic balance is also changing.

Greece, one of the EU's fastest aging countries, is experiencing an increase in the aging population as well as a rise in the number of foreigners.

According to a recent report, titled "The contribution of foreigners to natural balances in Greece (2009-2020)" and published by academics from the University of Thessaly and Athens University, the overall natural balance in Greece since 2010 has consistently been negative for the first time after the end of World War II.

"During the last three decades, foreigners increased significantly from 200,000 in 1991 to about 900,000 today," the study revealed.

Statistics between 2004 and 2020 indicated that the death rate of the Greek population in the country was higher than the birth rate, while it was vice versa for the foreign population in the country.

Figures also show a dramatic decline in total population by 252,163 from 2009 to 2020.

'Ticking time bomb'

Meanwhile, speaking at an event on Greece's demography earlier this month, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis warned of the potential dangers posed by population imbalances.

The demography is like a "ticking time bomb," said the Greek premier, who warned of the pension system collapse as a result of the shrinking population.

Also mentioning the decline in the number of financially active citizens, Mitsotakis said the aging population can have negative consequences for social security and health systems.

This issue is more important than Turkish-Greek problems and the economy, in the long run, he added.

Meanwhile, according to Eurostat figures, Greece's population decline, which has been continuing since 2011, will result in the country having the oldest people in the EU by 2030.

- Median age is about 42 years

With a total population of approximately 10.8 million, the median age in the country is 41.9 years, with women corresponding to 51% of the population, according to the Hellenic Statistical Authority.

According to 2011 data, there are 199,121 EU citizens living in Greece, whereas there are over 700,000 third-country citizens in the country.

American pop singer R. Kelly was sentenced Wednesday to 30 years in US federal prison for racketeering, sex trafficking and having sex with underage girls.

"Kelly relied upon his fame, money and popularity as an R&B recording star," said prosecutors. "And used the large network of people his status afforded him including his business managers, security guards and bouncers, runners, lawyers, accountants and assistants to both carryout and conceal his crimes."

Kelly, a convicted sexual predator, was found guilty last September.

Nearly four dozen witnesses testified for the prosecution during the trial.

They said Kelly was preying on children and women for his sexual gratification.

In addition, Kelly was convicted in a bribery scheme involving a public official to get a fake ID for the late singer, Aaliyah, who was 15 when Kelly was 27.

Aaliyah died in a plane crash in 2001 when she was 22. Kelly produced her debut album, Age Ain't Nothing but a Number.

Kelly declined to make a statement after the sentencing.

His defense team asked for less than 14 years, citing Kelly's traumatic childhood.

He revealed in a 2016 interview that a female family member sexually abused him.

The defense also painted a picture that his accusers were motivated by money.

Kelly could have faced life in prison.

"He continued his crimes and avoided punishment for them for almost 30 years," said prosecutors. "And must now be held to account."/aa

Antonio de la Cruz was murdered in the Ciudad Victoria, Tamaulipas, in Mexico, making him the 12th victim in a wave of killings against journalists in 2022, authorities said Wednesday.

De la Cruz was attacked, along with his 23-year-old daughter, by two unknown assailants in the early morning outside his residence, according to preliminary reports. Health officials said his daughter is receiving medical care but her condition is “very serious.”

"Due to the public denunciations of journalists from Tamaulipas, regarding the murder of the journalist Antonio ‘C,’ and in compliance with the federal competence in the matter of Crimes against Freedom of Expression, the corresponding Prosecutor's Office has opened the necessary investigation file to initiate the investigations of the case," according to the prosecutor's office.

The Attorney General's Office said the case is being investigated by authorities in Tamaulipas.

De la Cruz was experienced with more than 15 years covering the agriculture industry and had constantly criticized government figures.

The government in Tamaulipas has been reported to be heavily influenced by criminal organizations. Governor Francisco García Cabeza de Vaca was previously investigated for having ties to drug cartels in the region and money laundering.

The last being killing of a journalist in Mexico was a double homicide May 9 involving journalists Sheila Johana García Olivera and Yesenia Mollinedo Falcon.

Four days later, the body of another journalist, Luis Enrique Ramírez Ramos, was found abandoned in a plastic bag with signs of violence./aa

The biggest challenge for major central banks in the world is to rein in inflation expectations without causing a recession, S&P Global Ratings said in a statement on Wednesday.

"The balance of risks is clearly on the downside with recession probabilities rising, especially in the US, and the macro effects of Russia-Ukraine conflict persisting," the global rating agency said in a statement.

"Economic momentum will likely protect the US economy from recession in 2022. But the weight of extremely high prices is damaging purchasing power and, as aggressive Federal Reserve policy increases borrowing costs, it's hard to see the economy walking out of 2023 unscathed," it added.

So far, the Fed made a total of 150 basis points of a rate hike since March in order to tame 40-year high inflation that climbed to 8.6% in May on an annual basis.

The US central bank is widely expected to make another 75 basis points of an interest rate increase next month.

In Europe, inflation is also hovering at record highs, while the European Central Bank is expected to make a rate hike of 25 basis points in July, followed by another hike of at least that much in September.

The biggest problem, however, is whether central banks' aggressive monetary tightening could cause a recession in their domestic economies and in the global economy as a whole.

"A growth slowdown across a wide swath of economies has already begun. Despite the strong and optimistic start to the year, this deceleration became inevitable once it was clear that central banks needed to raise rates sooner and faster to get inflation under control," S&P said.

"This tightening of financial conditions foretells a slowdown. The invasion of Ukraine, with spillover effects on food and energy markets and confidence, has exacerbated this dynamic ... If employment starts to slide, a recession is almost inevitable," it added./agencies

A joint investigation headed by a Dutch investigative news organization found that Greek police were forcing asylum seekers to repel their fellow migrants back across the border to Türkiye, risking their own asylum, or possible “disappearance” in the process.

The report issued this week after conducting investigations over many months by Lighthouse Reports with contributions by Le Monde, Der Spiegel, ARD Report Munchen, and The Guardian, gives concrete details about the Greek authorities in what amounts to modern-day slavery.

Refugees and asylum seekers – masked or wearing balaclavas and under the close supervision of armed officers – are used as operatives to force back other asylum seekers over the Evros River, one of the main crossing points from Türkiye into Greece.

The six men involved – of Syrian and Moroccan origin – offered stories of brutality, beatings, threats, and theft of their belongings. They also tell of being locked up while in the service of their captors, with violence as the modus operandi for asylum seekers used as pawns by the police to constantly drive away and return by boat their brothers seeking safe haven.

Despite the damning revelations, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has consistently denied reports of any wrongdoing, claiming that his immigration policy is “firm but fair.” Police forces in the country back him up.

The starting point in this enslavement? Forced recruitment or being lured in by some of their own, smugglers were lorded over by a gang master. At the head of the operations is a Syrian man who goes by the name of “Mike” and who lives in a container on the base of a Greek police station.

The men recently put forth their accounts as well to a Facebook group called the Consolidated Rescue Group, which had asked those involved to speak out about their experience.

The problem has multiplied drastically over the past two-and-a-half years after Türkiye in March 2020 opened the borders for asylum seekers into Europe.

Not only are these “slaves” used at the banks of the Evros to push back those attempting to cross, but asylum seekers who have already made it over are detained in centers there. Those forced to do the police’s work are driven by truck from the detention centers, where they then ferry migrants on the shoreline over in rubber boats while the police look on.

The men forced into this “work” are given papers issued by the police permitting them to stay in Greece for 25 days. They are, however, held against their will in three different police stations in the region, close enough to the Evros to be able to carry out their daily duties.

One of the men, “Bassel,” whose name has been changed for security reasons, spent three months in the servitude of “Mike,” who worked directly with the Greek police. Bassel was housed in barracks in the Greek municipality of Tychero, where he was brutally forced each day to assault, rob, and even strip asylum seekers of their personal effects. The police told Bassel that he could then take whatever he wanted from his captors' belongings.

The container where “Mike” and the six men make their home is located in the parking lot of the police station in Neo Cheimonio, in the Evros region. The civil protection minister there, Takis Theodorikakos, told Le Monde earlier this month that there is increasing pressure with the daily flow of migrants.

“Every day, we prevent the illegal entry of 900 people,” he said.

Aside from the papers that the police have given him to legally stay in Greece – a mere seducement, it seems – Bassel tells of the choice given by his captors: either perform the assigned duties ferrying migrants back to the Turkish side of the Evros or face prison time after being charged with human smuggling.

In exchange for his work, Bassel was also promised a travel permit that would enable him to go beyond Greece and into Western Europe.

Initially, three of the men who gave their stories to Le Monde claimed that a Turkish smuggler charged them €5,000 ($5,200) each and promised them that they would be met by a Syrian man on the other side who would be accompanied by the Greek police.

Those who live in nearby villages of the Evros region also tell Le Monde and Lighthouse that it is well-known there that the captured asylum seekers carry out the assault and transport work that the police hand down./aa

The coronavirus pandemic increased the use of digital payments globally, the World Bank said Wednesday.

"The COVID-19 pandemic has spurred financial inclusion – driving a large increase in digital payments amid the global expansion of formal financial services. This expansion created new economic opportunities, narrowing the gender gap in account ownership, and building resilience at the household level to better manage financial shocks," it said.

The World Bank said 76% of adults had an account at a bank, other financial institution or with a mobile money provider as of 2021, which is up from 68% in 2017 and 51% in 2011.

The growth in account ownership was evenly distributed in more countries as the percentage of ownership has increased double digits in 34 countries since 2017.

In developing economies, the share of adults making digital payments grew from 35% in 2014 to 57% in 2021.

"The digital revolution has catalyzed increases in the access and use of financial services across the world, transforming ways in which people make and receive payments, borrow, and save," according to World Bank Group President David Malpass.

"Creating an enabling policy environment, promoting the digitalization of payments, and further broadening access to formal accounts and financial services among women and the poor are some of the policy priorities to mitigate the reversals in development from the ongoing overlapping crises," he added./aa

The number of deaths rose to 53 in a tractor-trailer tragedy in the US state of Texas after two more migrants died, according to the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Wednesday.

Eleven remain hospitalized, Tanya Roman, spokesperson for the Office of Public Affairs, told Anadolu Agency.

"The victims identified at this time are from Mexico, Guatemala, and Honduras," said Roman. "Information on the remaining survivors will be provided when available".

Authorities found nearly 40 deceased migrants inside the back of the truck in San Antonio amid high temperatures Monday. They said the victims suffered heat-related illnesses.

Homeland Security Investigations has launched an investigation with the support of the San Antonio Police Department into the tragedy.

Police said temperatures in southcentral Texas hit 103 degrees Fahrenheit (39.4 degrees Celsius) when the bodies were discovered.

The new figure was first confirmed by officials to The Washington Post and a local television station.

President Joe Biden described the deaths as “horrifying and heartbreaking,” and said the tragedy "underscores the need to go after the multi-billion dollar criminal smuggling industry preying on migrants and leading to far too many innocent deaths."/aa

Kuwait will celebrate Eid Al Adha on July 9, in accordance with the crescent moon sighting of Dhu Al Hijjah, the twelfth and last month in the Islamic calendar.

Saudi authorities sighted the crescent moon for Dhu Al Hijjah this evening. Thursday, June 30, will mark the first day of the Islamic month.

Eid Al Adha will therefore be on July 9, which will be the tenth day of Dhu Al Hijjah.

Thus, July 8 will be the day of Arafat, the ninth day of Dhu Al Hijjah and one of the holiest days in the Islamic calendar.

On that day, Muslims performing Hajj to Mecca flock to the mount of Arafat. Muslims believe that Prophet Muhammad gave one of his sermons in the final days of his life on the holy site.

Pilgrims usually spend the entire day during Arafat saying their afternoon prayer (Asr) and reciting the Quran.

The International Astronomical Centre predicts that most countries will celebrate Eid Al Adha on Saturday, July 9.

Meanwhile, a handful of countries, including Morocco, are expected to celebrate Eid Al Adha on July 10.

During Eid, Muslims sacrifice a sheep, lamb, goat, or a cow to commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s (Abraham) willingness to sacrifice his son Ismail at the behest of God.

Being satisfied with Abraham’s unwavering devotion, however, God sent him a sheep and asked him to sacrifice the animal instead of his son.

Muslims around the world celebrate Eid Al Adha in roughly the same way, with the morning being marked with Eid prayer and the slaughtering of the sacrificial animal. This is followed by Eid meals, family gatherings, and visits to loved ones.

A recent statistic issued by the labor market system, which is based on cooperation between the Central Administration of Statistics and the General Authority for Manpower, revealed an increase in the total number of workers entering the country in the first three months of 2022, reports Al-Qabas daily. The sources stated that new domestic workers from India make the highest number with a total of 11,591, followed by the Filipinos with 5,631, while the number of other nationalities did not exceed hundreds. The statistic showed a continuous decrease in employment in some nationalities topped by Nepal, Ethiopia, Indonesia, and Pakistan.

Despite the increase in the total number of workers, the data contained in the statistics includes a continued decline in the number of workers under Article 18 by 50% among the top 9 countries exporting labor to Kuwait; the number of Indians decreased by 1,967 workers, followed by Egyptians by 1,415, then Filipinos and Bangladeshis. The number of Nepalese achieved a remarkable increase at the beginning of 2022, as their numbers rose to 2,447 workers, in addition to 354 Jordanians and 121 Syrians, and 4,697 Kuwaitis entered the labor market in the same period. Among those living the labor market the Iranians with topped the list while the Lebanese topped the list for new workers into Kuwait./KT
