Written during Sinwar’s lengthy imprisonment in Israeli prisons, “The Thorn and the Carnation” provides a personal depiction of the struggle and resilience of the Palestinian people.

Blends facts and fiction

The book effectively blends fact and fiction to chronicle the Palestinian resistance from the aftermath of the 1967 Arab Israeli war, reflecting on themes of loss, perseverance, and hope amid the stark realities of occupation.

The novel opens with the heart-wrenching martyrdom of the protagonist’s father and uncle, victims of Israeli soldiers. Sinwar’s narrative skillfully sheds light on the psychological and emotional burdens borne by these families, utilizing rich imagery to depict the indomitable spirit of the Palestinian people. The protagonist’s quest for justice represents a larger struggle—a fight not only against oppression but also for identity, dignity, and rights.

The Slaughterhouse

Among the book’s most striking portrayals is the depiction of life in a Gaza prison, famously known as "the slaughterhouse." Sinwar describes harrowing scenes of torture and degradation, illustrating a system designed to break individuals rather than bodies.

Detainees are subjected to a variety of brutal tactics, including suffocation, beatings, and relentless psychological torment. Through these grim realities, Sinwar reveals the resilience that emerges in the darkest of times. Herein lies a poignant reminder of the human cost of conflict—a theme that reverberates throughout the narrative.

Sinwar’s reflections resonate particularly when he exposes the conditions of administrative detention, where inmates are crammed into cramped quarters, deprived not only of freedom but also of basic human rights. In these dire circumstances, hunger strikes become a desperate act of defiance; prisoners endure starvation to reclaim their dignity and to demand the fundamental rights that have been systematically denied to them. This depiction of suffering is not merely for dramatic effect—it serves as a testament to the strength and resolve of those who refuse to submit to a regime of oppression.

Israeli intelligence apparatus

Moreover, the novel explores the insidious methods employed by the Israeli intelligence apparatus. Sinwar illustrates how the occupier infiltrates Palestinian communities, coercing individuals into becoming informants through threats or violence.

This betrayal not only undermines the spirit of the resistance but also highlights the broader societal fractures caused by prolonged occupation. The tactical use of addiction and economic desperation serves not only as a control mechanism but as a grim narrative of exploitation that many Palestinians face.

Resistance on Education

Despite the pervasive violence and control, Sinwar emphasizes the unwavering commitment to education among Palestinians. During a time when Gaza lacked its own university, the Islamic University of Gaza emerged from the efforts of dedicated students who, against all odds, sought knowledge and empowerment. Among them is the character Ibrahim, modelled on Palestine Liberation Organization members and Hamas’s founder, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin. Ibrahim transforms from a student activist into a builder, demonstrating the unyielding determination of the youth to rise above occupation and claim their future. The institution becomes a symbol of resistance itself—a bastion of hope amidst the rubble of despair, where camaraderie is galvanized through both academic and political struggles.

Longing for freedom

Sinwar's narrative is imbued with a profound sense of longing—a yearning for freedom encapsulated in the symbolism of carnations. These delicate flowers, often associated with fleeting moments of joy, stand juxtaposed against a backdrop of enduring hardship. The contrasting imagery serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience embedded within the Palestinian spirit, as individuals grapple with personal and collective trauma while clinging to the hope for liberation.

Showing Complexities of the Palestinian Political Landscape

Notably, Sinwar does not shy away from the complexities of the Palestinian political landscape. He delves into themes of betrayal and conflict within resistance factions, capturing the intricate dynamics of cooperation and division among various Palestinian groups. The importance of unity in the face of a common adversary emerges as a critical theme, revealing that, despite their differences, Palestinians are bound by a shared desire for justice and self-determination.

Sinwar’s literary prowess transcends mere political narrative, offering an intimate and humanizing portrayal of life under occupation. By focusing on individual stories of suffering and resilience, he connects with readers on an emotional level, allowing them to grasp the depth of the Palestinian experience beyond the headlines.

Sinwar’s insights, garnered from personal experience and a diligent study of Israeli strategies, infuse depth into the narrative, making it a compelling blend of history, pain, and hope.

Sinwar Life and Martyrdom

In July, Yahya Sinwar ascended to the leadership of Hamas as its political chief following the assassination of his predecessor, Ismail Haniyeh, in an Israeli strike in Tehran. Haniyeh had been actively engaging in international diplomacy aimed at achieving a ceasefire in Gaza since the onset of increased tensions on October 7, 2023. Sinwar is recognized as the architect of the 7 October attack, dubbed Operation Al-Aqsa Storm.

Born in Khan Younis, Gaza, Sinwar earned a BA in Arabic Studies from the Islamic University of Gaza. An early member of Hamas, established by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in 1987, he became immersed in anti-occupation activism during his university years. Throughout the 1980s, he faced multiple imprisonments, ultimately being sentenced to four life terms in 1988 for his alleged involvement in attacks against Israeli forces.

During his incarceration, Sinwar mastered Hebrew and translated banned autobiographies of former Shin Bet leaders, indicating a commitment to education and preparation for future leadership. Released in 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange deal for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit, Sinwar quickly rose through Hamas ranks. In 2021, he was re-elected and played a significant role in the Al-Quds Sword war. On Thursday, Israel announced its claim to have killed Sinwar, a statement that was confirmed by Hamas the following day.

In 2024, Sinwar, the leader of the battle " Aqsa Flood" was martyred on Wednesday, October 16th, in an unplanned armed confrontation with a Zionist force in Rafah.
The leader Sinwar sealed his eventful life of jihad and struggle with martyrdom as he wished, heading towards it willingly, to illuminate the path of freedom and salvation for our people, and to purify the land and sanctities from the filth of the fascist Zionists.

The Social Reform Society: The martyr Sinwar embodied the Palestinian cause in all its details.
The Social Reform Society offered its deepest condolences to the Islamic and Arab nation, the brave Palestinian people, and the free people of the world, following the martyrdom of the resistance leader Yahya Sinwar (Abu Ibrahim), the head of the political bureau of the Islamic Resistance Movement "Hamas".
The association said in a statement today, Friday: The martyr Sinwar embodied the Palestinian story in all its details, including fatigue, resilience, and sacrifice, as he was a refugee, pursued, injured, imprisoned, and besieged.
It added that God chose him to fulfill his wish in the end he wished for, as he fought his enemy and our enemy all with courage and bravery, to join the ranks of martyrs in beloved Palestine.
The association affirmed that "this condemned assassination is a new evidence that the head of the terrorist enemy government does not seek peace or negotiations, but seeks to continue the war and expand its scope, and ignite its fires in the entire region."
It explained that "words of condemnation are no longer sufficient to express the shock of the international silence in the face of a whole year of Zionist extermination of our people in the Gaza Strip, where the massacre is devouring humans, stones, and sanctities without the international community moving to stop it. Indeed, great countries directly participate in supplying the occupation with weapons and ammunition to kill women, children, and displaced people."
Islamic Constitutional Movement: Losing a leader like Sinwar is a loss for the Palestinian people.
The Islamic Constitutional Movement "Hadas", mourned today, Friday, the head of the political bureau of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) leader Yahya Sinwar.
The movement said in a statement: "With deep faith and certainty in the victory of Allah and empowering His weak servants, we mourn for the steadfast Palestinian people and the Arab and Islamic nations, the head of the political bureau of Hamas, the jihadist Yahya Sinwar, who was martyred in the face of the brutal Zionist Nazi enemy who has committed and continues to commit the worst crimes against the Palestinian people for seventy-five years."
It added, "The martyr did not let the decades of captivity he spent in the occupation's prisons deter him from defending his people's rights and leading their struggle and jihad for liberation and emancipation from the brutal and tyrannical colonization."

Presidents of countries and governments mourned the head of the political bureau of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) and the leader of the "Al-Aqsa Flood" battle, the martyr Yahya Sinwar.
According to Anadolu Agency, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said: After my brother Ismail Haniyeh, the last elected Prime Minister in Palestine, I mourn the leader of Hamas, Yahya Sinwar, who was martyred.
Erdogan recited the noble verse: (And do not think of those who have been killed in the way of Allah as dead. Rather, they are alive with their Lord, receiving provision) (Al-i-Imran: 169). He pointed out the responsibility of the "Israeli" occupation forces for the killing of 50,000 innocent people in Gaza and Lebanon, stressing that supporters of the "Israeli" government, who send arms and ammunition without any conditions, are openly complicit in this crime. He also criticized the international community's silence towards the violations of the occupation, saying: The United States, Europe, and the Security Council have become a game in the hands of a thug named Netanyahu.
In the same context, Iranian President Masoud Bazshkian said in a statement issued last Friday, according to the Iranian news agency (IRNA): The martyr Sinwar spent many blessed years of his life in the slaughterhouse of the Zionist entity and then fought tirelessly until the last moment of his noble life.
He added: Like martyr, Ismail Haniyeh said: When the leader is absent, another leader will rise. The enemy must know that the martyrdom of heroic leaders will not weaken the resistance of the Islamic nation against injustice, oppression, and occupation.
Bazshkian considered that jihad against aggression and granting freedom to the owners of occupied land is a great renaissance and a noble goal that will not be stopped by the elimination of the heroes of this battle.
Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also mourned the martyr Yahya Sinwar, describing him as a fighter and defender of the Palestinian people. In a post on the "X" platform, Ibrahim strongly condemned the assassination of Sinwar by the occupation forces in Gaza, affirming Malaysia's support for the Palestinian cause.
Former Tunisian President Moncef Marzouki wrote on his Facebook page: May Allah have mercy on Abu Ibrahim, this resistance fighter who did not die in a tunnel hiding with hostages as the enemy claimed, but on the ground, in military uniform with a weapon in his hand, defending the land where he was born and martyred.
In a related context, the interim Afghan government sent a message of condolence for the martyrdom of Sinwar, expressing its deep sorrow and calling on the Islamic world to stand in solidarity with the oppressed Palestinian people.
The leader of the "Al-Aqsa Flood" battle, Yahya Sinwar, was martyred on Wednesday, October 16th, in an unplanned clash with a Zionist force in Rafah.

Member of the political office of Hamas, Khalil al-Hayya, said in a speech: "Al-Sinwar ascended intentionally, not by chance, at the forefront, moving between combat locations."

Hamas declared in a mourning statement: "With all meanings of pride, dignity, honor, and glory, we mourn to our Palestinian people and to our nation as a whole and to the free people of the world a man of noblest men and bravest men… a man who dedicated his life for Palestine, and offered his soul in the path of Allah for its liberation, may Allah accept him and grant him martyrdom with those who preceded him among his martyr brothers."

The movement added that Sinwar "ascended as a hero martyr, intentionally ascending, his weapon drawn, engaged and facing the occupation army at the forefront, moving between all combat locations, steadfast and resolute on the land of dignified Gaza, defending the land of Palestine and its sanctities, inspiring the spirit of resilience, patience, steadfastness, and resistance."

The statement continued: “The martyr leader Yahya Sinwar lived as a mujahid and made his way in the Hamas movement since he was a young man involved in its jihadist activities. Then, during the 23 years of captivity, he subdued the Zionist jailer. After he was released from prison in the Wafa al-Ahrar deal, he continued his giving, planning, and jihad until his eyes were filled with joy on October 7, 2023. The day of the great flood that shook the depths of the entity and exposed the fragility of its alleged security, and what followed of epics of legendary steadfastness of our people and the heroism of our victorious resistance, until he attained the most honorable position and the highest medal and ascended to be with his Lord as a martyr, satisfied with what he had offered in jihad and giving.” The movement stated that the martyr leader Yahya Sinwar “was a continuation of the caravan of great martyr leaders following in the footsteps of the founding martyr Sheikh Mujahid Ahmed Yassin, Dr. Abdul Aziz al-Rantisi, al-Muqaddamah, Abu Shanab, Jamal Mansour, Jamal Salim, the martyr leader Ismail Haniyeh, his deputy Sheikh Saleh al-Arouri, and the caravan of martyrs from all the leaders and sons of our people and our nation.”

The movement stressed that “this blood will continue to light the way for us and constitute an incentive for more steadfastness and perseverance, and that the Hamas movement is continuing with the covenant of the founding leaders and martyrs until the aspirations of our people are achieved for comprehensive liberation, return, and the establishment of the Palestinian state on all Palestinian national soil with Jerusalem as its capital, God willing, and it will turn into a curse on the invading occupiers who invade this land.”

Hamas pointed out that the martyrdom of Sinwar and all the leaders and symbols of the movement who preceded him on the path of pride, martyrdom, and the project of liberation and return. All of those “will only increase the strength, steadfastness, and determination of the Hamas movement and our resistance to continue on their path and to be loyal to their blood and sacrifices. A movement that offers its leaders and sons as martyrs on the path of defending the rights of its people is a proud and authentic movement, rooted in its people.” Hamas sent a message to those mourning the prisoners of the occupation with the resistance, saying: These prisoners will not return except by stopping the aggression on Gaza, withdrawing from it, and releasing our heroic prisoners from the occupation prisons.

Birth and upbringing

Yahya Ibrahim Sinwar was born on October 19, 1962, in Khan Yunis refugee camp to a family that was displaced by the Zionists from the city of Majdal Asqalan in 1948.

Education and education

He studied in Khan Yunis schools until he completed his secondary education at Khan Yunis Secondary School for Boys, and joined the Islamic University in Gaza, where he obtained a bachelor's degree in Arabic language.

Sinwar emerged in the public student debate arenas among the blocs, and headed the Islamic Bloc and was one of its most prominent theorists.

The Resistance Experience

Sinwar is considered one of the first Palestinian leaders who led various forms of resistance against the occupation since the early eighties of the last century.

He participated in the establishment of the first movement security apparatus (Da'wa Security) headed by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin in 1983, and was assigned with others in 1986 to form the Jihad and Da'wa Organization (Majd), and was the most prominent leader of the organization.

In 1982, Sinwar was arrested for the first time, then released after several days, only to be arrested again in the same year, and then sentenced to 6 months in prison for his resistance activity.

In 1985, he was arrested again for eight months after being accused of establishing the Hamas security apparatus known as “Majd”, as the apparatus was working to resist the occupation in the Gaza Strip, and combat Palestinian collaborators with it.

In 1988, the occupation arrested him for the third time and sentenced him to 4 life sentences, after he was accused of establishing the Majd security apparatus, and participating in establishing the movement’s first military apparatus.

Sinwar spent 23 consecutive years in occupation prisons, 4 of which were in solitary confinement.

He assumed the leadership of the Supreme Leadership Authority of Hamas prisoners in prisons for several sessions, and led a series of hunger strikes, the most prominent of which were (1992, 1996, 2000, 2004).

From Prisoner to Leader
Gilad Shalit was released in 2011 as part of the "Wafa Al-Ahrar" deal, where the Israeli soldier was released in exchange for the release of 1027 Palestinian prisoners.

Shalit was captured on June 25, 2006, by fighters from the Al-Qassam Brigades affiliated with Hamas, the Nasser Salah al-Din Brigades affiliated with the Popular Resistance Committees, and the Army of Islam, in a high-profile military operation called "Operation Skewed Illusion". This operation was considered one of the most complex Palestinian operations since the Second Intifada broke out.

The prisoner exchange deal "Wafa Al-Ahrar" took place after more than 5 years that Shalit spent in secret captivity in Gaza, as Israel failed with all its intelligence capabilities and collaborators to locate him. Their aggression at the end of 2008 and the beginning of 2009 also failed to rescue him from captivity.

He was elected as a member of the political bureau of the movement in the Gaza Strip, and took over the security file in 2012, then he was elected as a member of the general political bureau and took over the military file in 2013.

He was also elected as the leader of the movement in the Gaza Strip in February 2017, and on August 6, 2024, he was chosen as the head of the political bureau of the movement after the martyrdom of Ismail Haniyeh.

The United States included him in its "international terrorists" blacklist in September 2015, and he was responsible for the issue of Zionist captives within the Al-Qassam Brigades.

His home was bombed and destroyed in 1989, and again during the 2014 aggression on the Gaza Strip.

Works:
He is proficient in Hebrew. He has several political and security publications and translations, including: "Shin Bet Between the Fragments", "Israeli Parties in 1992", "Hamas: Experience and Error", the book "The Glory" which documents the work of the Shin Bet agency, a literary novel entitled " Thorn and Clove " (which tells the story of Palestinian struggle from 1967 to the Intifada).

In today's information overload, people must critically evaluate media to navigate the risks of biased and deceptive content. This dimension has advanced to a clear and present danger to healthy decision-making and opinion-building. One should also be mindful of how the strategies of those out to shape opinion using propagandist and disinformation strategies work and take self-defensive measures. We will discuss ten precautions that can help people see beyond the impact of media and recognize deceptive and biased content.

1 . Verify the Source

Verification of the information’s origin is of utmost importance. In the digital era where every individual is a potential publisher, tricky information sourcing becomes of the essence. The most fundamental of these can be the mainstream media which has been known for its reliable reporting over years. These companies have something to lose, so their potential for unethical practices is minimal compared to others in the field.

While checking a source, it is also important to look for qualifications like how long the person has been writing, how good the person is, and if the person has written anything that is based on facts.

Avoid Excessive, Tempting, or Gesturing Titles, since Many of Them Are Just for Attracting Attention, Not for Proper Information.

  1. Verify Claims

Relying on a single medium or instrument is not effective for authenticating a statement or news item. Information needs to be looked into from other reputable sources to see if there is a phased approach to how the information is being told. This way helps to bring out contradictions, prejudices, inaccuracies, and other similar aspects. When assessing the canon of literature, remember to check not only the content but also the language and the tone of all the sources. If appropriate, ignore the source that appears to derive its findings from one research or expert only as such a source may be propagating unwarranted opinion.

  1. Verify the Writer

The author of a work significantly influences the reliability of the information provided. Look up the author to find out if they have a record of trustworthy articles or if they have any conflicts of interest. Assess the writer's education, the number of years he/she has worked, and his area of specialization concerning the events in the article. Especially, surpass authors who stand to benefit from the outcomes of the report or those who are propaganda authors. Still, analyze the author's language and expression as they are also very strong indicators of possible bias.

  1. Check Evidence

Trustworthy journals should always back up their assertions with evidence, probably in the form of figures, expert views, and research findings. In this regard, evidence-based reporting is fundamental in safeguarding the facts provided. In assessing the evidence, look for reliable, scholarly, well-reviewed, and appropriate materials on the subject matter. Avoid reading articles that support their arguments with subjective statements or perceptions instead of objective evidence.

  1. Beware of Sensational Headlines

Overhyped or “clickbait” Headlines are often crafted to entice readers rather than inform them. Such tactics in most cases depend on the ethos of the readers, distortions or falsehoods to entice readers for clicks or shares. While thinking about a headline, take a minute to reflect on whether it is an embellished or an exaggerated statement. In that case, one may approach the headline with extreme caution and perhaps read the article with the intent of finding fault in it.

  1. Consider the Date

If information is outdated or not relevant, it can lead to misunderstandings. Always verify that the information is current and suitable for the topic at hand. Additionally, be cautious of articles that discuss current trends but rely on statistics or studies from several decades ago, as they may be designed to manipulate readers' opinions.

  1. Analyze the Language

Bias on the part of authors and articles often accompanies the use of strong emotionality or even radical language which helps influence the public. As factors suggesting the presence of bias also, pay attention to the language of the article. Avoid language that is pompous, exaggerative, sensational, polaristic, etc. Instead, make use of language that is calm, impartial, and above all objective with an emphasis on facts.

  1. Balance Check

Seek journalism that bears several views and is not extremely inclined to one side. A well-balanced report should include proper reasoning, other people’s opinions, and different sets of statistics and evidence to excuse its assertions. Watch the writings that have only one facet of contempt stories or tend to quote one-sided sources.

  1. Be Skeptical of Unverified Content

Avoid unverified information, particularly from social media platforms that have not been confirmed by reliable sources. Social media is often used to misinform and spread falsehoods, so any information obtained from these sources should be approached with caution. Before sharing or believing any information, ensure that it comes from credible sources or fact-checkers.

  1. Use Fact-Checking Websites

In a world where misinformation spreads rapidly, it’s essential to verify facts. Use trustworthy sites like Snopes, FactCheck.org, and PolitiFact to uncover the truth and become a savvy information consumer! Such sites employ personnel who are either trained researchers or experts to ascertain some of the claims and give a supportive analysis of the facts. Such facilities must be utilized to check information, especially regarding the claim's authenticity.

It can be rather tricky and intimidating to navigate through the media. However, as these ten precautions explain, it is possible to limit the chances of being duped by twisting and targeted content. To do so, always check the source, not only look for substantiating details but also compare other sources of information, confirm who wrote it, search for proof, think twice about eye-catching headlines, mind the time, scrutinize the style, look for fairness, do not trust anything unless it is from reliable sources, and lastly rely on fact-checking services. In this way, it will be possible to make reasonable conclusions and develop opinions that are rich in detail even when presented with prejudicial content that seeks to manipulate.

Charitable organizations in Kuwait celebrate the "International Day for the Eradication of Poverty."
The President of the Union of Charitable Associations and Endowments, Saad Marzouq Al-Ateeqi, emphasized that Kuwait has been and continues to be at the forefront of countries supporting the global cooperation efforts to eradicate poverty and alleviate debt, thanks to its rich record of humanitarian contributions that align perfectly with the message of the "International Day for the Eradication of Poverty" observed on October 17. He affirmed that Kuwait's commitment to helping the needy and providing assistance to impoverished communities around the world reflects a leadership vision eager to give and spread good, reflecting Kuwait's principles of humanitarian work, which earned it the title of "Global Humanitarian Center" by the international community.

Al-Ateeqi explained that Kuwait, through its charitable associations and endowments, continues to support large-scale development projects around the world, providing humanitarian aid and basic necessities such as food, water, educational and healthcare services without discrimination, believing in the necessity of helping humanity regardless of religion, nationality, or ethnicity. He pointed out that charitable organizations remain prominent symbols in the global humanitarian field, with their quick response to humanitarian challenges in disasters, wars, and famines, enhancing Kuwait's role as a key supporter in the international humanitarian scene.

Al-Ateeqi mentioned that Kuwaiti associations continue to work in cooperation with international organizations to establish educational and training projects that combat illiteracy and enhance human development in poor communities, as well as working on the creation of productive development projects to economically empower families and provide employment opportunities, supporting dignified living in those communities.

He highlighted the importance of localizing charitable work as a strategic step in promoting sustainable development within local communities, focusing charitable efforts and resources within the country to address its societal needs first before venturing abroad. Localizing charitable work helps direct support towards local development projects that enhance infrastructure, provide job opportunities, strengthen social cohesion, and reinforce the concept of self-empowerment. This approach facilitates skills development and the establishment of small projects that contribute to the financial independence of deserving families, ensuring long-term benefits and opening up new avenues for local growth and prosperity.

Al-Ateeqi emphasized that localizing charitable work plays a vital role in combating poverty by empowering those in need, meeting their basic needs locally, improving living conditions for communities through direct support and sustainable development opportunities, creating small projects for low-income families to build their capacities and financial independence, supporting long-term social and economic stability, promoting societal solidarity, and establishing a local support system that responds to societal challenges, making the goal of poverty eradication achievable through sustainable local resources and efforts.
