An official from Aung San Suu Kyi's party has died in custody in Myanmar after being arrested during raids by security forces in Yangon.

On Sunday the body of U Khin Maung Latt was released to his family, who were reportedly told that he had died after fainting.

Photos show a bloodstained cloth around the 58-year-old's head.

Activists say he was beaten while being detained by police and soldiers, and subjected to a harsh interrogation.

Protests continue against last month's coup despite a bloody crackdown.

The UN says more than 50 people have been killed since the military detained Ms Suu Kyi, Myanmar's democratically elected leader, on 1 February.

The authorities have exhumed the body of one victim, 19-year-old Kyal Sin, and said she had not been killed by police as she had been shot from behind.

In another development, the military rulers asked neighbouring India to return several police officers who had crossed the border seeking refuge after refusing to carry out orders.

How did U Khin Maung Latt die?

He actively campaigned for candidates of Ms Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (NLD) in recent general elections and was also known for his welfare work, The Irawaddy reports.

He had been "violently beaten and kicked before being taken from his home" at around 22:00 (15:30 GMT) on Saturday, according to witnesses quoted by the news outlet.

On Sunday morning, his family was informed he had died after "fainting" and they collected his body from a military hospital.

U Tun Kyi, from the Former Political Prisoners Society, told AFP news agency: "He was beaten and taken in a raid since last night and it seems he underwent a harsh interrogation."

On Friday, an NLD local official in a village in Magwe region, U Htway Naing, was reportedly hacked to death by supporters of the military.

In Yangon, police carried out other night-time raids on Saturday.

The UN special rapporteur, Tom Andrews, told the BBC that video from different parts of Myanmar showed security forces firing repeatedly at buildings as they made arrests.

"And you can see them walking down the streets in Yangon, firing up through the windows as people look in horror down on the streets," he said.

"These are gangs. This is criminal activity. They're terrorising these neighbourhoods. So there is a compelling reason for the world to act and for the world to act now."

Where are the latest protests happening?

Security forces fired tear gas on Sunday in the country's second biggest city, Mandalay, after thousands of protesters turned out.

Demonstrations were also held in half a dozen other cities, Reuters news reports, with police using force against protesters in Yangon, Lashio and Bagan.

In the southern town of Dawei, one protest leader was quoted by Reuters as saying: "They are killing people just like killing birds and chickens. What will we do if we don't revolt against them? We must revolt."

Myanmar in profile

  • Myanmar, also known as Burma, became independent from Britain in 1948. For much of its modern history it has been under military rule
  • Restrictions began loosening from 2010 onwards, leading to free elections in 2015 and the installation of a government led by veteran opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi the following year
  • In 2017, Myanmar's army responded to attacks on police by Rohingya militants with a deadly crackdown, driving more than half a million Rohingya Muslims across the border into Bangladesh in what the UN later called a "textbook example of ethnic cleansing"

The Swiss voted Sunday narrowly in favor of banning face coverings in public, including the burka or niqab worn by Muslim women, following a controversial referendum.

The national referendum dubbed the "burka ban," launched in 2016 by a right-leaning initiative committee, was accepted by 51.2% of those who cast ballots with a participation of 51.4% of voters.

Sunday's referendum was put forward by a group associated with the right-wing Swiss People's Party, which campaigned with slogans such as "Stop extremism" and in some areas with posters of Muslim women in veils.

"It's a defeat for the government and majority of parliament, who opposed the ban on the grounds that it was unnecessary – both because of the low number of niqab-wearers in the country and because the cantons can legislate on such issues themselves," Swissinfo, the website of the national broadcaster, commented.

The Islamic Central Council of Switzerland (ICCS) called the result a "big disappointment for all Muslims born in Switzerland and who grew up here."

Farah Ulucay, the secretary-general of the ICCS, said the vote "has succeeded in anchoring the widespread Islamophobia in Switzerland in the constitution."

The government argued against the ban, saying it was not up to the state to dictate what women wear, but the vote pushes the ban into the constitution.

About 5% of Switzerland's 8.6 million people are Muslim, most of them originating from Turkey, Bosnia, and Kosovo.

Research by the University of Lucerne, before the vote, found that almost no-one in Switzerland wears a burka, and only around 30 to 150 women wear the niqab.

Some commentators noted that the most common wearers of the burka and niqab are tourist women who visit from Gulf states in summer.

The Swiss section of Amnesty International denounced the new initiative "which discriminates against a particular religious community," and said it unnecessarily fuels division and fears.

The vote was complicated by some feminists and also some Muslims saying they were voting for the ban.

Opponents had attacked the facial covering as an example of anti-Islamic "symbol politics," which did not aim at any real problem.

Walter Wobmann of the Swiss People's Party, who backed the ban, said on Sunday that it indeed was a "symbol" – but a symbol for anti-democratic Islamist values, which he said have no place in Switzerland./aa

A total of nine YPG/PKK terrorists were "neutralized" by Turkish security forces in northern Syria, the National Defense Ministry announced on Sunday.

Turkish authorities often use the word "neutralized" in statements to imply terrorists in question surrendered or were killed or captured.

The "heroic commandoes" neutralized two terrorists who opened fire on the Euphrates Shield zone, the ministry said in a tweet.

“Seven YPG/PKK terrorists who attempted to attack from the Tal Rifat region to disturb the peace and security atmosphere were neutralized,” the ministry said in a separate tweet.

The operations will continue without letup, it added.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the EU -- has been responsible for the deaths of nearly 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants. The YPG is the PKK's Syrian offshoot.

Euphrates Shield (2016) is one of the three successful anti-terror operations that Turkey has launched since 2016 across its border in northern Syria to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and enable the peaceful settlement of residents. The other two are Olive Branch (2018) and Peace Spring (2019)./aa

Turkey's national flag carrier Turkish Airlines ranked first in Europe with an average of 581 daily flights from Feb. 1 to March 6, the European Organization for Air Navigation Safety (Eurocontrol) said on Sunday.

"The busiest airline in the @eurocontrol Network is @TurkishAirlines, currently running about the half of the number of flights it made in 2019," Eamonn Brennan, the director-general of the Eurocontrol, said on Twitter.

According to the data, Istanbul Airport is the top airport with an average of 190 daily departures, while another airport in Istanbul, Sabiha Gokcen International Airport, ranked second with 55 daily flights.

Turkish Airlines ranked second in Europe with an average of 626 daily flights last year, and fourth with 1,331 flights in 2019./aa

A suspected member of the Fetullah Terrorist Organization (FETO) trying to escape to Greece was caught along the border in northwestern Turkey, the country’s National Defense Ministry said on Sunday.

The ministry said on Twitter that border security units in the Pazarkule district of Edirne province captured a person trying to cross to Greece illegally.

The person was on trial for being a member of FETO, and was referred to the provincial gendarmerie command, it said.

FETO and its US-based leader Fetullah Gulen orchestrated the defeated coup of July 15, 2016, which left 251 people martyred and 2,734 injured.

Ankara also accuses FETO of being behind a long-running campaign to overthrow the state through the infiltration of Turkish institutions, particularly the military, police, and judiciary./aa

More than 40 out of 100 people play mobile games at least once a day, according to a recent survey.

AdColony, global advertising, and marketing platform surveyed 1,250 people on mobile games and social media platforms in Europe, Middle East and the Africa (EMEA) region.

While 88 of 100 people play mobile games, 42 of 100 play at least once a day, the survey revealed.

Players said the games have become a part of their daily lives. The time spent on games has increased day by day. Nearly 70% of respondents in the EMEA play for more than three hours a week.

More than 80% of respondents said they are in a good mood while playing and 47% play to make leisure time enjoyable.

But it is not only young people who play. Nearly 80% of adults play in Turkey. Action-adventure games are preferred by Turkish gamers at 49.2%. Puzzles and racing games are also favorable.

The survey revealed that advertisements for mobile games, which have become the biggest socialization tool, have started to turn into online stores.

While 72% of participants said mobile ads they encountered positively affect their shopping, 66% said they preferred to shop in-app./aa

Under the Tripartite Commission’s umbrella, nine human remains, including a Saudi citizen, among the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia missing persons list, gone missing during the 1990-1991 Gulf War and whose relatives have remained without news since were officially buried in the State of Kuwait. Finally, after 30 years of painful uncertainty, the families now have clarity on the fate of their loved ones – and our thoughts remain with all those still waiting for answers, hoping that they too may gain closure in the near future.

This development follows conclusive DNA analyses conducted and matching with Kuwait’s database of Prisoners of War (POW) and Missing persons and third-country nationals, led by the General Department of Forensic Evidences in the Ministry of Interior in the State of Kuwait. This enabled the closure of another 20 missing persons’ cases among the State of Kuwait missing persons’ list earlier this year.

The human remains in question had been found at a burial site in Iraq’s Samawa district back in March 2019, thanks to the Iraqi and Kuwaiti authorities’ joint efforts assisted by experts from the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) within the frame of the Technical Sub-Committee.

The Tripartite Commission and its Technical Sub-Committee were set up in 1991 and 1994, respectively, to help ascertain the fate of people missing in connection with the 1990-1991 Gulf War. They are chaired by the ICRC and composed of representatives of the Republic of Iraq, the State of Kuwait, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, the United States of America, the United Kingdom, and the Republic of France. The UNAMI joined in 2014 as an observer. The Tripartite Commission members continue to work relentlessly to search for those still unaccounted for in relation to the conflict.

DHAKA, Bangladesh

The heads of international missions are committed to continuing their support for persecuted Rohingya refugees living in congested makeshift settlements in Bangladesh, a joint statement said late Saturday.

A delegation of international diplomats including the Australian High Commissioner and ambassadors from Japan and the US recently met with Bangladeshi government officials, international aid agencies and Rohingya refugees "to reiterate their unwavering support for Bangladesh’s refugee response."

The delegation visited refugee camps in Bangladesh's southern district of Cox's Bazar, home to more than 1.2 million stateless Rohingya, to assess a disaster preparedness project, food programs, learning center and a health facility dedicated to the persecuted people, the statement added.

The Rohingya have been marked as the world's most persecuted people by the UN. They fled genocide in their homeland and have taken shelter in other countries, mostly in neighboring Bangladesh.

More than 750,000 Rohingya fled a brutal military crackdown in August 2017 in west Myanmar's Rakhine state, where nearly 24,000 minority Rohingya Muslims have been killed.

A genocide case is currently under the jurisdiction of the International Court of Justice against the Myanmar government and its military for the persecution of the Rohingya that is also marked by the UN as a "textbook example" of ethnic cleansing.

The delegation also spoke with community health volunteers about their role in the coronavirus response in refugee camps and host communities.

According to the latest data compiled by Bangladesh's Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner, 10 refugees have died from the virus as of Friday while the number of cases is 6,030.

Bangladeshi authorities have cited the very low rate of casualties in the world's largest refugee camps as a result of constant monitoring and implementation of proper health guidelines by the host country and continuous support by the international aid agencies.

The statement said that since the outbreak of violence in Myanmar in 2017, Australia has provided more than $240 million in humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya and host communities in Cox’s Bazar. Japan has contributed $140 million and the US has responded with $1.2 billion "to address those affected, including host communities in Bangladesh.”

The latest visit marks one year since the first coronavirus cases were reported in Bangladesh in March 2020 and the first since the October 2020 Rohingya donor conference, which raised nearly $600 million in additional funds for refugees and host communities.

Delegation members also met with courageous refugee volunteers who fight the pandemic by distributing information about preventative measures with residents in the largest camps, said the statement./aa

Three YPG/PKK terrorists in possession of $2 million were arrested in northern Syria, Turkish security sources said on Saturday.

The suspects were gathering information for the terror group on security forces deployed in the region, said the sources, requesting anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

They were arrested in the town of Cobanbey in an operation by gendarmerie forces from Turkey’s Kilis province, said the sources.

The $2 million found in their possession was meant to be delivered to the terror group in Syria’s Manbij region, the sources added.

Since 2016, Turkey has launched a trio of successful anti-terror operations across its border in northern Syria to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and enable the peaceful settlement of residents: Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019).

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and the EU -- has been responsible for the deaths of at least 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants. The YPG is the PKK’s Syrian offshoot.

The US Senate passed on Saturday President Joe Biden's much-awaited $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill, sending it back to House of Representatives for approval.

The upper chamber had a 50-49 vote, with one absentee and all Republicans voting against the relief package, which was passed through budget reconciliation -- a process that required every Democratic vote without any Republican support.

While Republicans are worried about too much liquidity injected into the economy, Democrats argue that the extensive package is needed for quick recovery in the world's largest economy.

"The Senate has never spent $2 trillion in a more haphazard or less rigorous way," Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell wrote on Twitter, reminding that Congress passed last year five pandemic rescue packages totaling $4 trillion.

"Instead of working together to fight COVID-19, Democrats decided to exploit the crisis by jamming through unrelated liberal policies they couldn’t pass honestly," the Republican lawmaker of Kentucky added.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, however, said the legislation is one of the most significant anti-poverty bills in modern American history that will help millions of people who are struggling due to the pandemic.

The Democrat Senator of New York added that the bill will help families and jobless individuals by providing aid for food, rent, utilities, small businesses, and vaccine efforts.

Biden said via Twitter: "I hope the American Rescue Plan receives a quick passage in the House so it can be sent to my desk to be signed."

The legislation was "desperately and urgently needed," he told in a press briefing, adding: "Everything in this package was designed to relieve the suffering, and meet the most urgent needs of the nation, and put us in a better position to prevail."

The bill is now sent to the House of Representatives where it will be voted again in the coming days to be sent to the White House. Biden needs to sign it before March 14 if unemployment benefit programs are to be renewed.

The package includes direct payments of up to $1,400 to most Americans and $300 weekly benefits for the unemployed into September. The bill lowered the $400 weekly support through August that passed the House last Saturday.

It also expands child tax credit one year for families with children, rental assistance and K-12 schools for reopening, while it provides new funding for vaccine distribution and testing. /aa
