At least five people have been killed in election-related violence in the eastern state of West Bengal, local media reported on Saturday.
The violence occurred as voters came out to cast their ballots in what was the fourth of an eight-phase election process for the battleground state.
Four people were fatally injured when personnel of the federal government’s Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) opened fire outside a polling station in the Cooch Behar district, according to a report by the Press Trust of India (PTI) news agency.
Another person – an 18-year-old man – was killed when unidentified men fired shots at another polling station in the same district, which comes under the Sitalkuchi constituency.
Authorities suspended voting in the constituency, the report said.
West Bengal has been ruled by the opposition Trinamool Congress (TMC) party, led by current Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, since 2011.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has held power in New Delhi since 2014, but has been unable to wrest control of West Bengal from the TMC.
The BJP, which has never governed the state and won just three seats in the last polls in 2016, has claimed that it will clinch 200 seats in the 294-member assembly this time.
The TMC, which has a majority of 211 members in the legislature, is confident of securing a third consecutive term in power.
Following Saturday’s violence, Banerjee accused the federal government of using security forces in an attempt to tilt the election in “favor of the BJP.”
“We have been saying that the Home Ministry has been influencing the central forces and our worst fears have come true today. They have killed four people,” she said in a statement issued by the TMC.
The party said “BJP miscreants” were trying to prevent people from voting and the “CRPF was influencing voters to vote in favor of BJP.”
“When TMC workers went to inquire why people were not being allowed to vote, BJP miscreants launched an attack creating an atmosphere of chaos, following which CRPF opened fire leading to five TMC workers losing their lives,” read the statement.
The Border Security Force (BSF), which was also on ground with the CRPF, said in a statement that security personnel opened fire after they were “attacked by a mob of miscreants.”
It said personnel “reacted in self-defense and fired six rounds in the air to disperse the mob” but “the miscreants tried to snatch the weapons of personnel deployed there.”
The BSF claimed that the mob started “advancing aggressively” and troops “fired seven more rounds towards the advancing mob” because they were “sensing imminent danger to their life.”
“It is reported that five to six miscreants have sustained fatal injuries and further they succumbed to injuries,” read the statement./aa
A giant new statue of Christ, that is going to be higher than the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue that overlooks Rio de Janeiro, is being constructed in southern Brazil.
A head and outstretched arms were added this week to the statue, which has been under construction since 2019 in the city of Encantado, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.
Completion of the monument is scheduled for late this year, according to the Association of the Friends of Christ, which is coordinating the work.
"It is a day for celebration, for devotion," said Gilson Conzatti, a local councilor and son of Adroaldo Conzatti, the politician who conceived the idea.
The elder Conzatti, who was the city's mayor, died in March from complications of COVID-19.
The statue, to be named Christ the Protector, will stand 43 meters (140 feet) tall, including its pedestal, making it one of the world's tallest statues of Christ with outstretched arms.
It will measure 36 meters from hand to hand and will have an interior elevator and an observation deck near the top.
Christ the Redeemer, in comparison, measures 38 meters high, pedestal included, and spans 28 meters hand to hand. It will mark its 90th birthday this October.
Encantado, a city of 22,000, lies 145 kilometers (90 miles) northwest of the state capital Porto Alegre.
The project is intended to both inspire faith and encourage tourism to the area, its promoters say.
A father-son team of sculptors, Genesio and Markus Moura, are overseeing the work.
The project's budget of 2 million reals ($350,000) is being entirely financed through donations, according to the volunteer-based Association of the Friends of Christ.
The group is continuing to raise funds. Its website even features the raffle of a car./agencies

In order to understand Turkey's ties with Washington and Beijing, it must be understood that the country prioritizes the well-being of the Uyghurs and seeks to provide a voice for the Muslim world in global politics.
While Ankara does not advocate choosing one side over another, other global issues may force Ankara to change its stance in the future.
From March 24 to March 30 of the current year, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi paid state visits to Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Iran, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Bahrain and Oman amid worsening uncertainty in global leadership.
Regional and global issues, as usual, were at center stage during the roundtables. The common ground for Riyadh, Ankara, Tehran and Beijing is the palpable deterioration of bilateral ties with the West over several issues.
In this regard, U.S.-Middle East relations have been largely affected by global and regional issues. For instance, the Khashoggi murder has severed ties between Washington and Riyadh.
Other pressing issues include Ankara's push for the U.S. to clarify its stance over the PKK terrorist organization and its Syrian offshoot, the YPG, the nonproliferation of nuclear power and sanctions between Iran and the U.S. as well as the Chinese-U.S. trade war and clashing concepts of world order.
These issues have somehow changed the political, economic and military landscape, regionally and globally.
The first thing that comes to mind is how NATO member Turkey and NATO's ideological rival China have improved their relationship in light of the West's harsh stance toward Ankara and Beijing.
Similar to the West's punitive stance over Turkey's purchase of S-400 missiles from Russia, Ankara may face harsh backlash from Western nations if it extends its partnership with China.
Thus, the subtle point here is that the West should change its perception of Turkey rather than attempt to change the country.
The existing dilemma
Perhaps the most significant hindrance of the steady relationship between Turkey and China is the issue of the Uyghurs.
There is a huge concern among the Turkish people about the well-being of Uyghurs in China. On March 25, after a recent meeting between President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu and Wang, Çavuşoğlu tweeted that "we expressed our sensitivity and thoughts about Uyghur Turks."
Later, the Chinese Embassy's Twitter account targeted two prominent opposition politicians in Turkish politics, who criticized China over the treatment of Uyghurs. Ankara summoned China's envoy and conveyed its discomfort over the incident.
The events reflect that Ankara always shares its opinions on this issue directly.
Besides, the world has been observing the Uyghur situation in China. Many Western countries have clearly urged China to stop its bad treatment of Uyghurs.
The U.S., Canada and the European Union have imposed sanctions on several Chinese officials and companies. On the eve of Wang's visit to the Middle East, the U.K. also announced sanctions on four Chinese officials over the Uyghur issue.
Western powers have publicly called for other countries to take a similar stance against China over the Uyghur issue. During his visit to Japan on March 7, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken described China's actions as aggressive and repressive.
Blinken also underlined the importance of ties with Japan, South Korea and their allies. The U.S. has repeatedly emphasized that it does not welcome China's political, economic and cultural intentions and approaches.
In one instance, the Confucian institutions are considered espionage organizations.
World heading to...
The latest war of words between U.S. and Chinese officials in Alaska revealed a stark and profound clash of ideas on the world order.
Chinese officials rightfully criticized the so-called "rules-based world order," which favors certain countries. They articulated that China is an advocate of the U.N.-centered international system where Beijing and Ankara have intersecting interests.
The recent developments in Turkey's neighboring regions have shown that new political, economic and social moves will be made to subvert internal and regional peace and stability, pushing Ankara into a quagmire in Syria and Iraq.
While these events seemingly look simple, they increasingly impact Turkey's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
For instance, Iraq's Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) has shown its hidden and sneaky agenda by claiming territorial ownership of almost half of Turkey against Turkey.
There is evidence that U.S. diplomats took part in Nevruz celebrations with the KRG. Furthermore, there are many reports of the legal or illegal presence of the PKK in many countries.
Additionally, it seems that Turkey is a strong advocate of China treating Uyghurs better. It is odd to see the frequency of news circulating about the YPG/PKK on western media, including in China.
These media reports portray the YPG/PKK as the saviors of the region and the first line of defense again Daesh terrorists.
Here, it should be mentioned that Turkish forces have lost over 30 military officers in the fight against Daesh. Turkey has been reiterating its call for an international consensus to eliminate all terrorist organizations in Syria and Iraq.
However, this call has been regularly ignored or declined by the rules-based international community.
Ankara should directly and frankly ask China about its stance on these terrorist groups that are direct threats to the Turkish presence in the region, who are there to bring peace.
Several scholars have repeated that Turkish-China relations will not take the desired shape unless both countries positively change their perceptions of the other.
Ankara's call for the betterment of Uyghurs' living conditions is the right policy. Turkey agrees with China that a revolution is needed in the current rules-based world order in order to evolve into a more comprehensive system. The countries' rational moves reveal that they both are against hegemonic powers and policies.
The Uyghur issue should be considered a red line from a humanitarian perspective. Ankara and Beijing should collaborate in a way that benefits both nations and satisfies the world's Uyghur concerns. At the same time, Ankara and Beijing should lobby together and call for change in a world order which must include a voice representing the Muslim world.
