President Biden called for a thorough investigation, and said there was no harbor for “hate-filled domestic terrorism.” The 18-year-old white gunman, who pleaded not guilty, left behind a manifesto.

BUFFALO — A teenage gunman entranced by a white supremacist ideology known as replacement theory opened fire at a supermarket in Buffalo on Saturday, methodically shooting and killing 10 people and injuring three more, almost all of them Black, in one of the deadliest racist massacres in recent American history.

The authorities identified the gunman as 18-year-old Payton S. Gendron of Conklin, a small town in New York’s rural Southern Tier. Mr. Gendron drove more than 200 miles to mount his attack, which he also livestreamed, the police said, a chilling video feed that appeared designed to promote his sinister agenda.

Shortly after Mr. Gendron was captured, a manifesto believed to have been posted online by the gunman emerged, riddled with racist, anti-immigrant views that claimed white Americans were at risk of being replaced by people of color. In the video that appeared to have been captured by the camera affixed to his helmet, an anti-Black racial slur can be seen on the barrel of his weapon.

The attack, at a Tops Friendly Market in a largely Black neighborhood in east Buffalo, conjured grim comparisons to a series of other massacres motivated by racism, including the killing of nine Black parishioners at a church in Charleston, S.C., in 2015; an antisemitic rampage in a Pittsburgh synagogue in 2018 that left 11 people dead; and an attack at a Walmart in El Paso in 2019, where the man charged had expressed hatred of Latinos. More than 20 people died there.

In the Buffalo grocery store, where four employees were shot, the savagery and planning were evident: Mr. Gendron was armed with an assault weapon and wore body armor, the police said. And his preferred victims seemed clear as well: All told, 11 of the people shot were Black and two were white, the authorities said.

“It was a straight up racially motivated hate crime,” John Garcia, the Erie County sheriff, said.

In a news conference Saturday evening, Gov. Kathy Hochul — a Buffalo native — echoed that sentiment and decried the attack as an “act of barbarism” and an “execution of innocent human beings,” as well as a frightening reminder of the dangers of “white supremacist terrorism.”

“It strikes us in our very hearts to know that there is such evil that lurks out there,” Governor Hochul said.

Based on what was written in the manifesto, the attack appeared to have been inspired by earlier massacres that were motivated by racial hatred, including a mosque shooting in New Zealand and the Walmart shooting in Texas, both in 2019.

In the manifesto, which was being reviewed by law enforcement, Mr. Gendron — who had attended a community college in Binghamton, N.Y. — wrote that he had selected the area because it held the largest percentage of Black residents near his home in the state’s Southern Tier, a predominately white region that borders Pennsylvania.

The document outlined a careful plan to kill as many Black people as possible, complete with the type of gun he would use, a timeline, and where he would eat beforehand.

It also included details of where he would livestream the violence, mayhem that he had also calibrated. He carefully studied the layout of the grocery, writing that he would shoot a security guard before stalking through aisles and firing upon Black shoppers. He wrote that he would shoot some twice, in the chest, when he could.

He wrote he had been “passively preparing” for the Buffalo attack for several years, purchasing ammunition and gear, while infrequently practicing shooting. In January, the plans “actually got serious,” according to the manifesto, which also expressed praise for the perpetrator of the 2015 attack in South Carolina, and for a man who killed 51 Muslims at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 2019.

Mr. Gendron had read the racist writings of the New Zealand gunman, who had also livestreamed his attack, a method also used in a shooting at a Jewish synagogue in Halle, Germany, in 2019.

In an arraignment on Saturday evening, Mr. Gendron pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder, a charge that could lead to life imprisonment without parole. He spoke little except to confirm he understood the charges, and gave little indication of emotion inside the courtroom.

The United States attorney in Buffalo, Trini E. Ross, said her office was also investigating the killings as federal hate crimes.

Other gunmen have referenced the racist idea known as “replacement theory,” a concept once associated with the far-right fringe, but one that has become increasingly mainstream, pushed by politicians and popular television programs.

Officials said the camera that the gunman wore was used to broadcast the attack live on Twitch, a livestreaming site owned by Amazon that is popular with gamers. On Saturday, Twitch said it had taken the channel offline. Still, screenshots of the broadcast were circulating online, including some that appeared to show the shooter holding a gun and standing over a body in the grocery store.

In his manifesto, Mr. Gendron seemed enthusiastic about broadcasting his attack, saying the livestream let “all people with the internet” watch and record the violence.

The massacre began around 2:30 p.m., the authorities said, when Mr. Gendron arrived at the market stepping out of his car — on a sunny spring afternoon — dressed in tactical gear and body armor and carrying an assault weapon.

He shot four people in the parking lot, the Buffalo police commissioner, Joseph A. Gramaglia, said at the news conference, three of them fatally. When he entered the store and continued shooting, he encountered a security guard, a retired Buffalo police officer who returned fire. But Mr. Gendron was wearing heavy metal plating; he killed the guard and continued into the store, firing on shoppers and employees.

When Buffalo police officers arrived and confronted Mr. Gendron, he put a gun to his neck, but two patrolmen persuaded him to drop his weapon and surrender, Mr. Gramaglia said.

The mayor of Buffalo, Byron W. Brown, said that he and his family periodically shopped at the store.

“Some of the victims of this shooter’s attack are people that all of us standing up here know,” said Mr. Brown, the fifth-term Democrat who was the first Black man elected mayor of Buffalo, New York’s second-most populous city.

The 10 people killed in Buffalo represent the highest number of fatalities in a mass shooting in the United States this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which tracks them. The highest death toll this year before that was six, in a shooting in downtown Sacramento on April 3. Six people were also killed in a shooting in Corsicana, Texas, on Feb. 5, and the same number were killed in a shooting in Milwaukee on Jan. 23, according to the site.

In a statement made late Saturday night, President Biden expressed sympathy for the victims’ families and praise for law enforcement, adding that “a racially motivated hate crime is abhorrent to the very fabric of this nation.”

“Any act of domestic terrorism, including an act perpetrated in the name of a repugnant white nationalist ideology, is antithetical to everything we stand for in America,” the president said. “Hate must have no safe harbor.”

Gun deaths reached the highest number ever recorded in the United States in 2020, the first year of the pandemic, surging by 35 percent, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on Tuesday.

The gunfire in Buffalo on Saturday shattered a seemingly serene afternoon, sending shoppers screaming and fleeing inside the Tops, and families scrambling to find loved ones outside the store.

Ken Stephens, 68, a member of a local anti-violence group, described a grisly scene. “I came up here, and bodies were everywhere,” he said.

The attack took place in a neighborhood known as Masten Park on Buffalo’s East Side. Dominique Calhoun, who lives within sight of the supermarket, said she was pulling into its parking lot to buy ice cream with her daughters — eight and nine years old — when she saw people running out and screaming.

“That literally could have been me,” she said of the people who were killed.

Dorothy Simmons, 64, typically spends part of her Saturdays at Tops, shopping for food to prepare for Sunday dinner, something she says is part of a common tradition in her community. On Saturday, however, she was at work in Amherst.

And when she heard the news, she broke down and cried.

“This is our store,” Ms. Simmons said. “This is our store.”/agencies

Turkey criticized Sweden and Finland for supporting PKK Kurdish militant group. Finland and Sweden are in favor to join NATO. Referring to Sweden and Finland, Cavusoglu added that it is unacceptable and outrageous that friends of his country are supporting the terrorist organization.

The Foreign Ministers of the 30 members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) met in Berlin on Saturday. At the NATO meeting, Turkey criticised Sweden and Finland for supporting PKK Kurdish militant group. Finland and Sweden are in favour to join NATO.

"The problem is that these two countries are openly supporting and engaging with PKK and YPG. These are terrorist organisations that have been attacking our troops every day," reported news agency Reuters quoting Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu as saying after he arrived in Berlin for the meeting.

Referring to Sweden and Finland, Cavusoglu added that it would be unacceptable and outrageous that friends of his country are supporting the terrorist organisation. The Turkish Foreign Minister said that these issues need to be talked about with NATO countries and also with Sweden and Finland.

Earlier on Friday, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also opposed the Nordic States joining NATO. Erdogan accused Finland and Sweden of harbouring "terrorist organisations". In the past also Turkey accused Nordic countries, particularly Sweden of harbouring extremist Kurdish groups and supporters of Fethullah Gulen.

Meanwhile, Norway backed Finland and Sweden's plans to join NATO. "We don't know what Turkey really means but from (the) Norwegian perspective, we are 100% behind Finland and Sweden if they decide to apply for membership in NATO," reported the news agency quoting Norwegian Foreign Minister Anniken Huitfeld s saying.

Both Finland and Sweden are in favour of joining the US-led alliance after the Russian invasion. Notably, Finland shared an almost 1,300 km border with Russia. Last Mont, Finland's Prime Minister Sanna Marin had said that Europe's security landscape had changed after the Russian invasion of Ukraine. There is increasing fear among many Finns and Swedes and they feel that joining NATO would boost strengthen their security./agencies

In addition to using abusive language against Kuwaiti officials and an officer at the level of lieutenant colonel, the man threatened harm as an American, the newspaper said.

Kuwait City police described the suspect as smelling of alcohol when he was discovered with two girls - an Armenian and an Egyptian - in company.

A security source told the paper that when the serviceman was stopped by police for harassing people at a café, he used "immoral and insulting" words to address the officers.

The paper reports that the servicemen's behavior enraged witnesses, who assisted police in removing the muscular man to a patrol car./agencies

A gunman opened fire at a supermarket in Buffalo city in the US state of New York on Saturday afternoon, killing at least 10 people, according to Buffalo Police Department.

The mass shooting took place at the Tops Markets on Jefferson Avenue. The gunman was an 18-year-old white male, said Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia at a news conference.

He is under custody.

Gramaglia said 11 of the shooting victims were Black, while two others were white.

FBI is investigating the shooting as a hate crime and as an act of racially-motivated violent extremism.

The shooter was "very heavily" armed and was wearing tactical gear and a tactical helmet, according to Gramaglia.

"He had a camera that was live streaming what he was doing," he added.

Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, who is also Senate Majority leader, condemned the shooting and offered sympathy for the victim's families.

"I ache for the victims and their families. I ache for Buffalo. I ache for the tight-knit East Side community. Racism has no place in our state or our country. I’ve spoken with the Mayor of Buffalo and offered any help we can provide. We stand with the people of Buffalo," he wrote on Twitter./aa

Price of Bitcoin was struggling to climb above $30,000 on Saturday as demand in the cryptocurrency market continues to be weak.

Bitcoin, the world's biggest crypto by market cap, was trading at $29,060 at 1210 GMT for a daily loss of 4.7%.

The world's largest altcoin Ethereum was also struggling to surpass $2,000, as it was trading at $1,981 for a 5.7% daily decline at the time.

Once-popular cryptocurrency Luna saw its price sinking to almost $0 on Friday, tanking from its top 10 position in just a matter of days. It was up 1500% to $0.00045 at the time, but its price was still far away from $99.24 a month ago.

Luna's sibling TerraUSD, a stable coin referred to as UST that was designed to be pegged one-to-one with the US dollar, was at $0.2029 for a 17% increase.

With the price of UST in free fall in recent days, more and more Luna were burned and that had a negative impact on investors' confidence, which led them to dump the coin that eventually brought its price down to junk level.

Total value of the crypto market stood at $1.24 trillion at the time for a daily decline of 5.5%./aa

Germany on Saturday accused Russia of waging a "grain war," endangering global food security.

Addressing a news conference at the end of the G7 foreign ministers' meeting at the Baltic resort town of Weissenhaus, Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock said Moscow was consciously trying to expand the Ukraine war in the world, particularly in Africa.

Accusing Russia of trying to prevent grain from being exported by blocking ports in Ukraine, she said this was not part of the war's collateral damage.

"We must not be naive," the minister warned, saying Russia is deliberately trying to weaken international unity.

Baerbock said millions of tons of grain are stuck in Ukraine because its seaports are blocked by the Russian military.

The group of leading industrialized nations (G7) is considering alternatives to ship grain from Ukraine to break the Russian blockade in the area, she added.

Following problems with rail transport via Romania due to railways' different track widths, exports via the Baltic ports are being examined, she said, noting that prerequisites would first have to be clarified as to how the ports there could be reached.

The minister pointed out that normally, 5-6 million tons of grain could be shipped from Ukraine by sea per month.

"With a delivery by rail, you get significantly less grain," she said.

But, according to Baerbock, every ton delivered can help a little to get the hunger crisis under control.

So far, a fraction has been exported by rail, mainly via Romania, she said, adding that a bottleneck resulted from Ukraine and Romania having different track widths.

Baerbock warned there would be no perfect solution as long as Russia's bombing of Ukraine continues, with 25 million tons of grain lying in Ukrainian ports.

"This is the grain the world needs so badly," she went on to say.

"It is not just about preventing a famine in a few months. The effects of the blockade are already being felt. Even without the war in Ukraine, there are incredible problems in providing food for everyone and people are already starving to death.

"That's why it's so important that we act together," she emphasized./aa

For the first time in history, scientists have grown plants in soil from the moon.

Researchers at the University of Florida planted a type of cress seeds in samples of soil collected from the Apollo 11, 12, and 17 missions, according to BBC news.

The Florida team was given just 1 kilogram of lunar soil per plant to do the experiment.

Also, the plants grown in moon soil developed more slowly and showed signs of stress such as stunted growth.

The study is considered an important step for NASA's project to establish a settlement on the Moon.

NASA astronauts brought 382 kilograms of lunar soil, core samples, pebbles, sand, and dust from the lunar surface during the 1962-1972 Apollo missions./aa

“Israel” aimed to intimidate journalists by killing Al Jazeera’s veteran journalist Shireen Abu Akleh, say legal experts.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, the Director of the Gaza-based Palestinian Centre for Human Rights Raji Sourani, said Akleh was reporting the true situation on the ground, which did not favor the narrative of the occupiers.

Sourani argued that the journalist was killed by “Israeli” forces for her high-impact journalism, as she was one of the popular names in Palestinian media. Her coverage resounded in Arab countries and beyond, he added.

He said that "by killing journalists," [Israel] is trying to send a message that every reporter whose reports contradict its discourse, might meet the same fate.

Touching on [Israel’s] violations against Palestinians, Sourani said: "Israel demolished the homes of Palestinians, canceled the registers of Palestinian families, bombed hospitals and shelters."

"So, “Israel” has a long criminal record. We expect that the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC) will make out a case on this issue and thus the rights of the Palestinians will be defended," he said.

The human rights lawyer Raji Sourani said that the “murder” of a veteran journalist will bring a new dimension to the Palestinian-“Israeli” conflict.

He said the killing of Akleh "ensured the national unity of Palestine," adding that the Arab world and the international community became a "united voice" on this issue.

Drawing attention to the double standards of the international community regarding Palestine and Ukraine, he said: “The US and the EU arranged experts at the ICC within two months to condemn Russia's intervention in Ukraine. They achieved what we have failed to do over the past 25 years.”

Ramy Abdu, the chairman of the Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor, said that “Israel” killed Akleh as part of a systematic targeting policy against the media.

Arguing that journalist Akleh was not shot randomly, he said: “On the contrary, the press, particularly Al Jazeera TV Channel, is on the target. Al Jazeera's reporting of events with its extraordinary method disturbs Israel.”

-Akleh's death impacts Palestine and global opinion

Abdu noted that “Israel” had not foreseen that the “murder” of Akleh would make such an impact both in Palestine and the international arena.

Moreover, the Director of Legal Affairs and Policy at Skyline International for Human Rights, Mohammed Imad said: “Israel is preventing Palestine from conveying the facts to the international community. “Israel” committed this murder despite knowing the international law that protects journalists.”

Abu Akleh, 51, served as one of Al Jazeera's journalists covering the situation across the occupied Palestinian territories over the past two and a half decades.

Al Jazeera accused “Israeli” forces of deliberately killing its veteran journalist in the occupied West Bank on Wednesday, while the “Israeli” army said that its initial assessments indicated that she was "killed by Palestinian gunmen."

Also, the Palestinian Authority confirmed that Akleh was "shot dead by the “Israeli” army."
