Türkiye and Saudi Arabia are planning to hold a business forum soon as the two countries enter a period of developing bilateral trade relations, the Turkish trade minister has said at a business meeting.

From now on, trade activities will increase and accelerate between the two sides, Mehmet Mus said at the Türkiye-Saudi Arabia Business and Investment Roundtable Meeting on Thursday, according to a statement from Türkiye's Foreign Economic Relations Board (DEIK).

Organized by DEIK in the Turkish capital Ankara, the meeting was attended by Saudi Commerce Minister Majid Bin Abdullah Al Qasabi, Investment Minister Khalid Al-Falih, along with Türkiye's Mehmet Mus, and Nail Olpak, the head of the board.

Al Qasabi said both sides sought to maximize bilateral relations and added: "Let's build the future efficiently for our relations between the two countries."

Underlining that Ankara and Riyadh could work together in regions such as Africa and East Asia, he praised Turkish companies as "ingenious and talented."

"Let's make a plan and establish partnerships in third countries, as two countries.

"Let's work as brothers, let's move forward as the people of the two countries," said the Saudi commerce minister.

Al-Falih also said the two sides would move towards renewing good relations and establishing solid ties.

"There are investment projects, there is an opportunity worth $3.3 trillion," he said, stressing that investments could serve as a locomotive for both economies.

Olpak, for his part, stressed that the roundtable meeting, hosting two agreements, would be a good restart for the relations of Türkiye and Saudi Arabia.

During official meetings between the two countries, steps were taken to pave the way for private sector partnerships, he added.

"As the businesses of the two countries, we lost a few years in our commercial relations, our ministers are here to pave the way for us, we will work harder as business people," he added.

This came after a landmark visit by Saudi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman earlier in the week, during which he met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and discussed improving ties between the two countries.

Relations between Ankara and Riyadh had been strained in recent years due to foreign policy differences./aa

Former South African President Jacob Zuma on Saturday rejected a recent report that found him guilty of plundering state resources during his tenure.

Addressing a media briefing in Johannesburg on behalf of the former president, Zuma Foundation spokesman Mzwanele Manyi said Zuma rejected the "State Capture" report and views it as unlawful.

The report, which was published by a government-established judicial commission of inquiry known as the State Capture Commission, was the fruit of "a poisoned tree. It was wrong from the start," Manyi said in the presence of Zuma's legal team.

He said Zuma had asked Judge Raymond Zondo, who headed the State Capture Commission investigating corruption during Zuma's nine years in office, to recuse himself but that he refused.

Manyi accused the judge of having a bias against Zuma.

He said former President Zuma instructed his legal team to report Zondo, the newly-appointed chief justice of South Africa, to the Judicial Services Commission for investigation.

Zuma's lawyer Dali Mpofu said the former president could not attend the media briefing because of his parole conditions which barred him from attending gatherings unless at his place of residence.

The 80-year-old former president was arrested in July last year after he refused to appear before the State Capture Commission and was jailed for 15 months.

He was, however, released two months later on medical parole.

Zuma is accused of enabling friends, especially three Indian-born businessmen known as the Gupta brothers, to influence officials in granting them lucrative state contracts and taking control of most state operations and finances.

He claims innocence and denies these claims.

Earlier this month, South African authorities confirmed that two members of the wealthy Indian Gupta family accused of defrauding the country have been arrested in the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

Rajesh and Atul Gupta were arrested while the third brother, Ajay Gupta, who is also on Interpol's wanted list, is still at large.

The brothers, who enjoyed close relations with Zuma, fled South Africa for Dubai with their families shortly after Zuma resigned in 2018.

The Ministry of Justice and Correctional Services said discussions between various law enforcement agencies in the UAE and South Africa are underway to have the fugitives returned to South Africa./aa

With pain and fear writ large on his face, a former inmate of Syrian prisons run by the Bashar al-Assad regime recounted the torture and abuse he faced during incarceration.

In an interview with Anadolu Agency on the occasion of the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture observed on June 26, Muhammed Salih Assaf, who was released on June 9, recalled the inhumane torture and cruelties he witnessed during his imprisonment.

In 2017, Assaf was detained by PKK/YPG terrorists during a family visit in Afrin at the age of 17 and was handed over to the regime's security units.

Assaf spent about five years in regime prisons.

After footage of the "Tadamon Massacre" carried out by the Assad regime forces surfaced in April, the regime passed a "repentance law."

Syria's military intelligence service conducted the massacre in the Tadamon neighborhood of Damascus in April 2013, with Palestinians among the 41 victims, according to a report by the British daily The Guardian. Members of military intelligence Branch 227 made civilians run toward a mass grave while shooting at them.

According to the latest figures released by the Syrian Network for Human Rights (SNHR), the Assad regime released only 539 people under the amnesty law. The organization said that at least 151,462 people are still held in regime prisons.

'They enjoyed torture inflicted on us'

Assaf said he was handed over to regime forces by PKK/YPG terrorists during Operation Olive Branch launched by Türkiye in the northwestern district of Afrin in early 2018.

"They (regime forces) interrogated us and some of us were tortured to death. They wanted us to admit that we participated in armed actions, but we did not."

He said that on the first day, he was tortured to the extent that he suffered memory loss due to a blow to the head.

"They were inflicting all kinds of torture. They tortured (inmates) with plastic water pipes and sticks. I had wounds all over my body. They enjoyed the torture they inflicted on us."

The regime forces tortured older prisoners even more, Assaf said, adding: "Those who enter the prison either become disabled or die before they can see their families."

Underlining that he was randomly selected under the so-called amnesty law, Assaf said fellow prisoners asked him to inform their families of their whereabouts. "All I want is for everyone to be released and their torture to end," he said./aa

The Vatican has welcomed the US Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, ending the constitutional right to abortion.

"The fact that a large country with a long democratic tradition has changed its position on this issue also challenges the whole world," a statement from the Pontifical Academy for Life said on Friday.

"The protection and defense of human life is not an issue that can remain confined to the exercise of individual rights but instead is a matter of broad social significance," it added.

The statement noted that governments should enact life-supporting policies without getting caught up in ideological positions.

In a 6-3 vote, the US Supreme Court on Friday struck down the 1973 case that guaranteed the constitutional right to an abortion for about 50 years.

The ruling is expected to lead to abortion bans in nearly half of the states in the country.

President Joe Biden slammed the decision, saying it took the US back 150 years.

"The court laid out state laws criminalizing abortion that go back to the 1800s ... the court literally is taking America back 150 years," Biden said at a news conference. "It's a sad day for the country, but it doesn't mean the fight is over."

The president also called on Congress to restore the right to abortion as federal law.

The ruling sparked backlash among many, including former President Barack Obama, non-governmental organizations, and Amnesty International. The court's headquarters was surrounded by people protesting the ruling./aa

US President Joe Biden on Saturday signed into law the country's most significant gun control legislation in decades.

The law, which restricts firearm purchases and allows for inspections against illegal weapons in a bid to curb gun violence, came into force after Biden's approval.

"Lives will be saved" Biden said of the law that he signed a day after it cleared congress as a bipartisan bill.

Senators approved the bill on Thursday evening with a vote of 65-33, followed by the House on Friday.

It came a month after a school shooting in Uvalde, Texas left 19 students and two teachers dead.

The bill passed the House floor 234-193 as 14 Republicans voted along with all Democrats in favor.

While the bill does not tackle many of the proposals pushed by House Democrats and Biden -- like raising the age to purchase a gun, banning assault weapons, and expanding universal background checks -- it does establish a significant gun policy achievement between Republicans and Democrats that has not been seen in almost 30 years.

The bill still calls for expanded background checks, which includes juvenile and mental health records to be part of federal background checks for gun buyers aged 18 to 20.

It also closes the so-called "boyfriend loophole" in which convicted domestic violence offenders will now be denied guns if they have committed violent crimes against their spouses.

The measure would also strengthen "red flag" laws helping authorities get court orders to temporarily remove guns from people deemed dangerous.

With this law, the US Congress made first regulation on gun control for the first time in the last 30 years./aa

The death toll of migrants who died trying to cross from Morocco into the Spanish enclave of Melilla rose to 27 on Saturday, according to the Moroccan Association for Human Rights (AMDH).

Around 2,000 migrants, many from Sudan, tried to cross the militarized border fence on Friday.

At first, five people were reported dead, but later, Moroccan authorities raised the figure to 18.

Videos from the Moroccan side of the border show what appear to be dead bodies and people with severe injuries strewn out on the ground without receiving medical attention.

Other images show hundreds of people, some with clear injuries, lying in a pile on the ground with their hands tied behind their backs.

“The victims of the tragedy in Melilla agonized for hours under the cruel gaze of those who were supposed to help them and did not do so,” tweeted founder of Walking Borders Helena Maleno Garzon, who also confirmed the report of 27 dead.

Dozens of Moroccan and Spanish police officers were also injured during the storming of the border, where migrants were armed with homemade knives, sticks, stones and hooks to climb the border fence, according to Spanish news agency EFE.

Moroccan police used tear gas to disperse those trying to climb the border fence.

Several NGOs are calling for an immediate investigation into the treatment of migrants during the incident.

“We warn against any attempt to order the burial of the Sub-Saharan and Sudanese migrants who died yesterday without opening a global, rapid and serious investigation to determine responsibilities and shortcomings,” said the AMDH chapter in Nador, Morocco.

This is the largest mass assault on this border since Spain and Morocco boosted their bilateral cooperation after Madrid decided to support Rabat’s position on the independence of Western Sahara.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Friday applauded the “extraordinary work of the Moroccan government in coordination with Spain to try to stop a violent assault, which was, in this case, well resolved.”

Last summer, Moroccan authorities stood passively by as thousands swam into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta amid a diplomatic spat over Spain treating the separatist leader of Western Sahara for COVID-19.

During Friday’s border crossing attempt, just 133 people managed to reach Spain, according to Spanish authorities./aa

Mushtaq Ahmad, 55, in the Indian-administered Kashmir was struck with tragedy last year when his younger son died of a drug overdose at the age of 17.

“We found him locked inside a washroom and when we opened the door, he was lying lifeless near the toilet,” Ahmad told Anadolu Agency on eve of International Day of Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking to be marked on June 26.

For Ahmad and his family, it was hard to believe that his son could be consuming drugs till the time he actually died.

“He always behaved like a normal child, there was hardly any change in his behavior, he studied well and was home on time but we never thought that he is addicted to something,” Ahmad said.

In conflict-torn Kashmir, drug abuse has been rampant with rehabilitation centers receiving nearly 40 to 70 new and follow-up patients every day.

“We are heading toward an unimaginable catastrophe,” Dr. Yasir Rather, a consulting psychiatrist who heads the Drug De-Addiction Centre at a tertiary hospital, told Anadolu Agency.

"Nearly 90% of cases are heroin users and 70% of them are using illicit drugs through Intravenous mode,” Rather said.

This mode of administration he said is dangerous and can lead to overdoses and deaths as it leads to the transmission of deadly infections like HCV, HBV, and HIV and also endocarditis, which is an infection of heart valves.

“It is an epidemic,” he said.

The stigma

Ahmad hides the cause of his son’s death just to avoid the stigma and “criminal sense” that people attach to the victims of drug abuse.

“I always tell people, even my relatives, that my son died a natural death. I don’t want people to hate him or take him as a criminal just because he was trapped in this abuse,” Ahmad said while sobbing.

Immediate family members of those who die of drug overdose often cover it up to lessen the burden and societal shame that is attached to it.

However, experts say there is a need for proper investigation of death and the cause needs to be determined and recorded.

Presently, the hospitals in the Kashmir region lack any specific data on drug overdose deaths, and almost all of these deaths are attributed to heart attacks or road accidents.

“There is no proper aggregate record-keeping system that specifies that this death was caused by drug overdose,” Rather said.

He also noted that if this system can come up, it will help doctors in the long run in investigating and helping patients of abuse to understand the consequences.

Experts say already in just a few years, cardiac arrests among young people have drastically increased pointing to the rampant use of drugs, mainly the use of heroin and cocaine.

2 friends

Siraj Ahmad, 23, was chasing heroin with his friend Sartaj Jan, 22, for the last two years.

In April this year, Jan died of a drug overdose. His body was found along a roadside, his friend Ahmad says.

To avoid social rejection, Jan's family told everyone that it was an accidental death.

However, Ahmad knew the cause and was heartbroken by the news of his friend's death.

"At that point, I decided to come out of this abuse," Ahmad said.

For nearly two months, Ahmad is detoxifying himself but he said it is tough for him to bear this pain.

"I want to live a drug-free life now," he said.

Experts say people need to join hands to avert this catastrophe.

"At every level, a holistic approach has to be taken to stop this growing menace. Otherwise, in just a few years we will be surpassing huge numbers in drug abuse cases," Nasir Geelani, a therapeutic counselor said.

Leaders of the world's seven wealthiest nations will gather in Germany for talks on additional sanctions against Russia and the medium- and long-term reconstruction of Ukraine.

The three-day G7 meeting at Schloss Elmau in the Bavarian Alps will start Sunday.

The agenda is considered more urgent than ever as Russia’s “military operation” in Ukraine continues and it is also noteworthy that the summit will be held before NATO member states negotiate restructuring the alliance in times of war at a summit in Madrid on June 28 - 30.

Having taken the G7 presidency from the UK in January, Germany has set a goal for the program: “progress towards an equitable world.”

Under the theme, issues such as a sustainable planet, economic stability and transformation, healthy lives and sustainable investments will be discussed.

The situation in Ukraine is expected to be at the top of the agenda and according to German diplomatic sources, the German government at the moment is trying to find a way to secure its wheat supply from Ukraine, also possibly through EU member states- “and Türkiye is very involved as well with waterways.”

Regarding whether India can play a role in mitigating the unfolding food crisis by lifting an export ban, a German diplomat said: “Other options can ease the pressure momentarily but there needs to be a long-term solution.”

Germany is planning to establish a "trial corridor" to enable safe passage of Ukrainian grain by rail, German Ambassador to Ukraine Anka Feldhusen told state media on Monday.

Up to 25 million tons of grain are currently stuck in Ukraine, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who recently said he is seeking a secure corridor for Ukrainian ships to carry it to ease food shortages in regions around the world.

Scholz: “G7 is of particular importance this year”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz previously said the G7 is of particular importance this year.

“After the start of the terrible war of aggression launched by Russia against Ukraine, it was essential for us to coordinate with each other within the G7 framework.”

He said it was vital to raise the issue of how this war and other changes were affecting countries in the Global South.

On the other hand, China's trade and economic practices, which have been challenging Western economies in recent years, will also be discussed.

Leaders are also expected to announce a new infrastructure initiative aimed at low- and middle-income countries against the Belt and Road Project, which is defined as China's "modern silk road" and whose budget is expected to reach $10 trillion.

Who’s coming?

US President Joe Biden, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau will attend the summit.

In addition to the seven states, Indonesia, India, South Africa, Senegal and Argentina are also invited.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to speak at two sessions that include the environment, energy, climate, food security, health, gender equality and democracy.

Zelenskyy, the heads of state and government of partner countries and chairpersons of the international organizations will also be involved./aa

Türkiye neutralized seven PKK/YPG terrorists in northern Iraq and northern Syria, the National Defense Ministry said on Saturday.

5 PKK/YPG terrorists were neutralized by our Turkish Armed Forces in the (Operation) Euphrates Shield region in northern Syria and 2 PKK terrorists in the Operation Claw-Lock zone in northern Iraq,” the ministry said on Twitter.

Türkiye launched Operation Claw-Lock in April to target the PKK terror organizations hideouts in Iraqs northern Metina, Zap, and Avasin-Basyan regions, near the Turkish border.

It was preceded by Operations Claw-Tiger and Claw-Eagle, which were launched in 2020 to root out terrorists hiding in northern Iraq and plotting cross-border attacks in Türkiye.

Since 2016, Ankara has launched a trio of successful anti-terror operations across its border in northern Syria to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and enable the peaceful settlement of residents: Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019).

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US, UK and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of over 40,000 people, including women, children and infants./aa

A wildfire that broke out in Türkiye’s southwestern resort town of Marmaris earlier this week has been brought under control, the country’s agriculture and forestry minister said on Saturday.

Speaking to reporters, Vahit Kirisci said that efforts are being made to cool the area affected by fire, adding that restoration efforts will begin soon.

Kirisci said the fire has been brought under control in less than 72 hours./aa
