Turkish security forces "neutralized" three PKK terrorists in northern Iraq, near the Turkish border, authorities said on Friday.

The terrorists were targeted in areas of Operation Claw-Lock and Operation Claw-Lightning, the Turkish National Defense Ministry said on Twitter.

"Neither north of Iraq nor north of Syria is safe for terrorists," the ministry stated, underscoring: "We are determined to end terror."

Turkish authorities use the term "neutralize" to imply the terrorists in question surrendered or were killed or captured.

Türkiye launched Operation Claw-Lock in April to target PKK terrorist hideouts in Iraq's northern Metina, Zap, and Avasin-Basyan regions, near the Turkish border.

It was initiated after Operations Claw-Tiger and Claw-Eagle to root out terrorists hiding in northern Iraq and plotting cross-border attacks in Türkiye.

Operation Pence-Simsek is among a series of offensives Türkiye has carried out since 2019 against terrorist groups in northern Iraq, particularly the PKK.

In its more than 35-year terror campaign against Türkiye, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Türkiye, the US and EU – has been responsible for the deaths of over 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.

Gunmen have kidnapped dozens of worshippers attending Friday afternoon prayers at a mosque in Nigeria's northwestern state of Zamfara.

Mohammed Shehu, Zamfara police spokesperson said an unknown number of worshippers had been seized from Jumu'at central mosque in Zugu town, Bukkuyum local government area.

Zugu is 170 kilometres west of Zamfara state capital Gusau.

"The Zamfara state police command in collaboration with military and vigilantes have dispatched personnel for the search and rescue operation," he said.

Armed gangs are rife across Nigeria's northwest where they rob or kidnap for ransom, and violence has been increasing, while thinly stretched security forces often fail to stop the attacks.

Gunmen posed as worshippers

Ibrahim Aminu, who was at the mosque told the Reuters news agency that the gunmen hid guns under their garments and pretended to be worshippers.

On entering the mosque compound, they pulled out their weapons and fired in the air, forcing people to run for cover, he said. The gunmen took dozens of worshippers and force-marched them to an unknown place.

Mohammed Bukar Zugu said his 22-year-old brother was among those kidnapped. The gunmen later used his phone to call him and asked that he prepare a ransom. They did not say how much they wanted, he said.

Nigeria's military last month started launching air strikes against the armed gangs, known locally as bandits and says it has so far killed dozens of them.

Forty-two new candidates yesterday signed to run for general elections scheduled for September 29, bringing the number of candidates after four days of registration to 264, including 15 females. One member of the dissolved assembly, former MP Khlail Al-Saleh, was among the new candidates raising the number of hopefuls from the dissolved house to 28. In addition, four former MPs from previous assemblies also registered to contest the polls. They include Askar Al-Enezi, Ali Al-Deqbasi, Daifallah Byramia and Abdullah Al-Kandari. Enezi said after filing his nomination papers that the country is passing through a new era and a period of reforms. He described this as a unique transition. Former MP Deqbasi said that too much time has been wasted in disputes and now it is time to work.

Jenan Bushehri, a former minister who resigned after a grilling two years ago, said that the country is passing through a historical and exceptional period that began with the June 22nd speech of HH the Amir and dissolving the national assembly and eventually changing the voting method by adopting for the first time the Civil ID instead of the electoral rolls. Bushehri called for legislation to fight rife corruption, charging that “we have reached a stage where we see lawmakers backing legislation for corruption.” New candidate Wasmi Al-Wasmi said that true reforms can be achieved through legislation and not only through talk. Some 800,000 eligible voters head to the ballots on September 29 to elect a new assembly after the Amir dissolved the previous house over continued political disputes. Registration of candidates ends on September 7 while withdrawal from the race will continue until September 22.

The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) said on Thursday that it evacuated more than 100 asylum seekers from Libya to Rwanda.

"More than 100 vulnerable asylum seekers have been evacuated on a flight out of Libya to Rwanda," the UNHCR said in a statement.

The asylum seekers, including 38 children, are from different African countries, it added.

"We are also grateful to the relevant Libyan authorities for their support in facilitating necessary formalities for these humanitarian evacuation flights," it noted.

Many undocumented migrants, mostly from Africa, choose to cross the Mediterranean Sea to European shores from Libya, which has been suffering chaos since 2011 when the late former leader Muammar Gaddafi was overthrown.

According to the International Organization for Migration, 14,157 illegal immigrants have been rescued at sea and returned to Libya so far in 2022

The EU's natural gas storage is close to its full level, which, however, is unlikely to provide a definite solution for the bloc's energy crisis with winter around the corner and supply cuts from Russia.

The bloc's 113 billion cubic meters (bcm) of total gas storage capacity is 80% full, according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe.

Although the EU reached that level two months before the self-imposed Nov. 1 deadline, the total gas storage capacity can only meet just a little over 25% of the bloc's total gas consumption that stands around 400 bcm annually.

Moscow's main gas pipeline route Nord Stream 1, which accounts for a third of all Russian gas exports to Europe through Germany, is at 20% of its capacity since July 27, supplying only 33 million cubic meters (mcm) per day.

Even if gas storage facilities could be filled fully, this would be enough for European countries for three months at best, and even less in major economies, such as Germany, where industrial gas use and household consumption are higher than other members.

Mechthild Worsdorfer, deputy director general for the European Commission Directorate General for Energy, said Thursday that European officials have set up an energy platform, working on joint purchasing, and established different regional groups that try to bundle demand.

"There is a crisis now. We are all extremely aware. Energy prices, both gas and electricity, are very high that we have never seen before. There is speculation, there is uncertainty in the market," she told a European Parliament energy committee meeting in Brussels.

"We have done a lot on power saving side on the internal market. We have a number of fast-track measures – storage filing, demand reduction for gas. We work in solidarity with our member states that are ready to implement them," she added.

EU member states reached an agreement on July 26 to voluntarily reduce their natural gas demand by 15% this winter, compared to their average consumption in the past five years, in order to make natural gas savings ahead of the winter season and to prepare for possible disruptions of gas supplies from Russia.

Some of the measures include reducing gas consumption in the electricity sector, encouraging fuel switch in some industries, adopting national awareness raising campaigns, and implementing obligations to reduce heating and cooling, according to the European Council.

Now, Europe’s surviving the upcoming winter depends on how the continent can get more gas from Russia via Nord Stream 1, buy in form of liquefied natural gas from other suppliers, how severe weather conditions will be this winter, and how much European countries can scale back on their domestic gas consumption.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has criticised the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) for not taking "fair" decisions about Türkiye.

"The ECHR is not fair in its decisions, but political. When it comes to Türkiye, it makes politically driven decisions..," Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday at a ceremony in capital Ankara marking the opening of the new judicial year.

Important reforms, he said, have been made to strengthen the rule of law in Türkiye in the past 20 years.

"Such topics as people's rights and freedoms, women's rights, children's rights and improving our justice system have been the most important elements of our reforms," Erdogan said.

Speaking at the same event, Mehmet Akarca, president of the Turkish Court of Cassation, said the Turkish judiciary is "sensitive" to the fundamental rights and freedoms protected by the European Convention on Human Rights and the Turkish Constitution.

Previously, Turkish Justice Minister Bekir Bozdag said Türkiye expects the European Council and EU institutions to have a "fair and impartial" approach to the country as part of legal co-operation.

Türkiye has the highest compliance rate with the ECHR decisions compared to other countries, Bozdag said.

"The total compliance rate of the countries that have committed to comply with the ECHR decisions is 80.14 percent, while Türkiye has a rate of 87.90 percent. We have complied and implemented the decisions of the ECHR," he added.

The leader of Madagascar's largest opposition party has accused the government of committing "state terrorism" after police shot dead 19 civilians angered by the abduction of an albino child.

"I am talking about state terrorism because it was the gendarmes and the police who fired on the population," Marc Ravalomanana, who leads the main opposition party, Tiako I Madagasikara, told the AFP news agency on Wednesday.

"They have to protect people and not shoot them. I'm very shocked," said the 72-year-old, who served as Madagascar's president between 2002 and 2009.

Police in the southeastern town of Ikongo opened fire on what was described as a lynch mob who stormed a police station, demanding to mete out justice to suspects arrested over the abduction.

Nineteen people were killed and 21 wounded, the police said.

The national police chief defended the officers, saying they acted in self-defence after a crowd armed with sticks and machetes tried to force its way into the station.

The government hit back at Ravalomanana for labelling the tragedy "state terrorism" without details of the circumstances surrounding the incident

It is "pure provocation", Communications Minister and government spokesperson Lalatiana Rakotondrazafy told AFP.

For such comments to come "from a former head of state who plans to run for re-election, and who ordered the shooting of a crowd in 2009, is inadmissible and it stirs up hatred among our compatriots," she said.

She was referring to the death of at least 68 people during a wave of rioting in January 2009 on the large Indian Ocean island nation, when Ravalomanana — who was then head of state — accused his main rival and now President Andry Rajoelina of stoking political unrest.

Authorities promise 'necessary sanctions'

Minister Rakotondrazafy said what happened in Ikongo was "regrettable"

"We deplore the loss of life," she said.

Authorities have opened an investigation into the incident, with Defence Minister Richard Rakotonirina vowing "necessary sanctions" would be taken.

Police have given no information about what happened to the four kidnap suspects, who were unaccounted for, according to local district gendarme commander Cyr Razafialison.

After the shooting, the officers involved had made a "strategic retreat" to a nearby town, he said.

Additional forces have been deployed "to keep the peace" in Ikongo, a town about 350 kilometres south of the capital Antananarivo.

Revenge attacks are common in Madagascar.

Ikongo saw 800 people barge into a prison in February 2017, in search of a murder suspect they intended to kill. They overpowered guards, allowing 120 prisoners to break out of jail.

In 2013, a Frenchman, a Franco-Italian and a local man accused of killing a child on the tourist island of Nosy Be were burnt alive by a crowd.

Some sub-Saharan African countries have suffered a wave of assaults against people with albinism, whose body parts are sought for witchcraft practices in the mistaken belief that they bring luck and wealth.

An outbreak of cholera has reportedly killed 48 people in the central province of Sankuru in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), local media reported, citing health officials.

According to a report published on the privately run local French language news website Actualites CD, health officials detected 401 cases of cholera between August 15-21.

The highest number of cases and fatalities were reported in the Lusambo health zone, with 308 cases and 24 deaths.

The head of the provincial health division in Sankuru, Dr. Aime Alengo, said they are working with the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the media, churches, and communities to sensitise people on how to avoid getting cholera.

Battling many diseases

Alengo said they are encouraging communities to wash their hands, avoid open defecation and use Aquatabs in drinking water to avoid getting infected.

Cholera is a bacterial disease usually spread through contaminated water and causes severe diarrhoea and dehydration.

According to the report, Sankuru province is also battling other diseases such as measles, monkeypox, acute respiratory infections and meningitis.

Two Palestinians have been killed by “Israeli” army fire in the occupied West Bank.

"The two young men were killed. Samer Khaled, 25, was killed by a bullet in the neck, and Yazan Afana, 26, was shot in the heart," the Palestinian Health Ministry said in a statement on Thursday.

It also said, "the number of martyrs in the West Bank (including Jerusalem) and the Gaza Strip has risen to 140 since the beginning of the year."

Eyewitnesses told Türkiye’s Anadolu Agency that Afana was killed by “Israeli” army after it stormed the Umm Al Sharayet neighbourhood in the city of Al Bireh where it searched a number of houses.

Khaled was killed in the Balata camp near Nablus after an “Israeli” army stormed the city, according to eyewitnesses.

The “Israeli” army frequently carries out wide-ranging arrest campaigns across the occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem on the pretext of searching for “wanted” Palestinians.

“Israel” has occupied the West Bank since 1967 when it captured the territory from Jordan.
