JAKARTA - Cryptocurrency is a solution for dealing with special finance in the Central African Republic. This was stated by President Faustin-Archange Touadera on Sunday, July 3 citing the high costs of opening bank accounts in his country.

“The alternative to cash is cryptocurrency,” Touadera said at the launch event of a crypto initiative hosted by the Sango Project in the country. This makes them the first African country to make bitcoin legal tender in April. "For us, the formal economy is no longer an option," Touadera said, as quoted by Reuters.

The move to adopt cryptocurrency in a country where internet usage is still low and electricity is unreliable, has raised eyebrows or astonished crypto experts around the world. Even MPs and residents of the Central African Republic were confused. Finally, the IMF (International Monetary Fund) also issued a stern warning to them.

The Sango project, including the "Sango Coin", is backed by the National Assembly of the Central African Republic and spearheaded by Touadera, which says the token will provide access to a "mountain" of the country's natural resources, including gold and diamonds.

The country's "Sango" website says the project will "facilitate the tokenization of Central African Republic resources for investors around the world".

"The Sango Coin will become the Central African Republic's new generation currency," Touadera said, without providing further details on the intent of his statement.

The Central African Republic's enthusiasm for cryptocurrencies seems unaffected by the recent losses it has incurred in its value. Even as bitcoin prices have fallen more than 58% in the last three months, according to Refinitiv data./Reuters

JEFFERSONVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Police are investigating after more than 30 bodies, some decomposing, were found inside a southern Indiana funeral home.

Police in the Louisville suburb of Jeffersonville responded to Lankford Funeral Home and Family Center on Friday evening and found 31 bodies, including some “in the advanced stages of decomposition,” Maj. Isaac Parker said.

He said the county coroner’s office had reported a strong odor emanating from the building. Inside, officers wearing hazmat gear found bodies “in different places around the building.” Some of the bodies had been at the funeral home since March, Parker said. Police also found the cremated remains of 16 people.

“It was a very unpleasant scene,” Parker said. “The conditions were not good.”

The owner of the funeral home has been speaking with police since Friday, Parker said, and an investigation is ongoing.

The owner did not immediately respond to an email from the Associated Press seeking comment Sunday.

The remains were taken to the Clark County Coroner’s Office for identification, and police asked anyone who may have information to contact the coroner’s office.

A woman who sent her brother’s body to the funeral home for cremation after he died in April told WHAS-TV that she is still waiting for his remains. Tara Owen said when she reached out to the funeral director, he responded that he was “dealing with a lot at the moment.”

At least six people were reported to be killed after parts of a mountain glacier collapsed in the Italian Alps on Sunday amid record high temperatures, local authorities said.

"Rescue operations are in progress following a large ice avalanche involving excursionists," the Trento provincial government said, adding that there was likely to be a "heavy toll" of injuries or deaths.

The avalanche took place on the Marmolada, a mountain of more than 3,300 meters in the Dolomite range in the eastern part of the Italian Alps, between the regions of Trento and Veneto.

A large chunk of Alpine glacier broke loose and slid down a mountainside, sending ice, snow and rock slamming into hikers on a popular trail on the peak.

The injured have been taken to nearby hospitals in the towns of Belluno, Treviso, Trento and Bolzano, said the president of Veneto, Luca Zaia.

Italian RAI state television said the fatalities numbered six, but that death toll couldn't immediately be confirmed. It wasn't immediately known how many hikers might be missing.

The National Alpine and Cave Rescue Corps tweeted that the search of the involved area of Marmolada peak involved at least five helicopters and rescue dogs.

It wasn't immediately clear what caused the section of ice to break away and rush down the peak's slope. But the intense heat wave gripping Italy since late June could be a factor, Walter Milan, an Alpine rescue service spokesperson told RAI state TV.

"The heat is unusual,'' Milan said, noting that temperatures in recent days on the peak had topped 10 degrees Celsius (50 degrees Fahrenheit). "That's extreme heat" for the peak, Milan said. "Clearly it's something abnormal."/Reuters

A gunman killed two people and wounded four others, including three police officers, before taking his own life in a home in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, police said Sunday.

Haltom City Police Det. Matt Spillane said none of those wounded in the shooting Saturday evening in a residential neighborhood have life-threatening injuries.

Spillane said the officers returned fire after being shot at while responding to a report of gunshots at the home around 6:45 p.m.

One officer was hit in both legs, and the other two were shot in the arm. The suspect died of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

He said the Texas Rangers – the state’s elite police force – would take over the investigation. A motive for the shooting was not immediately clear. Authorities have not released the names of any of the people involved in the attack.

"The main focus is on how and why this happened,” Spillane told The Associated Press (AP).

A woman was found dead inside a house and a man was found dead outside, Sgt. Rick Alexander said, speaking at a news conference late Saturday. A woman who called 911 was also wounded, he said.

The suspect was found with a "military-style rifle” and a handgun, Alexander said.

The incident is one of several in recent days in which law enforcement officers were fired upon while responding to calls.

Three officers were shot dead in eastern Kentucky while trying to serve a warrant. Police took a 49-year-old man into custody late Thursday night after an hours-long standoff at a home in Allen, a small town in the hills of Appalachia. He remains jailed on a $10 million bond charged with two counts of murder of a police officer.

In Chicago, a police officer was hospitalized in serious condition after being shot repeatedly in a Friday morning ambush while answering a domestic disturbance report, police Superintendent David Brown said. A suspect was hospitalized awaiting a psychiatric evaluation and is being held on a $2 million bond./AP

A young Palestinian boy Sunday succumbed to injuries sustained from “Israeli” army fire in the occupied West Bank a day earlier, according to a local medic.

On Friday, Kamel Alawneh, 19, was shot in the abdomen by “Israeli” forces in the town of Jaba' near the city of Jenin.

"He breathed his last breath on Saturday," Jani Abu Gokha, the director of Ibn Sina Hospital in Jenin, said in a brief statement.

Alawneh's brother was killed by “Israeli” forces in 2003, according to the state news agency Wafa. “Israel” has also imprisoned his father.

According to Palestinian figures, at least 70 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli army fire since the beginning of this year./agencies

Four suspects chanting slogans in favor of the PKK terrorist organization at the Peoples Democratic Party's (HDP) 5th Ordinary Congress were detained on Sunday.

According to the information received, some participants chanted slogans in favor of the terrorist organization at the congress held in the capital Ankara.

Four suspects identified by the security forces were caught. The HDP is accused by the government of its links to the PKK terrorist group.

There is no difference between the HDP and the PKK terrorist group, the chief public prosecutor of Turkey's Supreme Court of Appeals said in an indictment, as last year he filed a lawsuit for the closure of the pro-PKK party. The verdict is yet to be given./DS

The rapid rise of the U.S. dollar since the start of the year is a double-edged sword for American multinational companies, pushing some of them to decide whether to hedge or reposition their activities abroad to avoid fallout.

For an importer, the surge in the greenback against the euro, yen or British pound is a plus, because it makes the products they buy cheaper.

But for a U.S. export company, products sold in dollars have become more expensive, which increases the risk of losing clients and seeing sales decline.

And they also lose money when converting foreign revenue back into to dollars.

Many firms already revised their earnings forecasts for the year to account for the changing exchange rate, including computing giant Microsoft, which warned its quarterly sales will fall by $460 million and its net profit by $250 million due to the currency hit.

Adobe, Salesforce, Biogen and Pfizer have all warned that the dollar's rapid rise will have a greater impact on their accounts than expected.

$40 billion hit

Companies that generate most of their revenue outside of the United States are the most exposed, starting with tech giants, medical equipment makers and service companies, according to Kyriba, a corporate cash management platform.

Kyriba estimates the currency effects could mean a $40 billion hit to the earnings of S&P 500 firms in the first half of the year.

The Federal Reserve’s (Fed) decision to aggressively hike interest rates to combat rampant inflation, combined with an influx of funds into the country from investors looking for a safe haven in uncertain times, have combined to boost the U.S. dollar.

The greenback has risen 13% compared to the euro over the last 12 months, approaching parity, and gained 22% against the yen.

“Short term, that’s a good thing for the United States because it means all the imports are cheaper and it puts downward pressure on inflation,” said Desmond Lachman of the American Enterprise Institute think tank.

But further out, the effect on the U.S. economy is more nuanced, because if exports fall, “the United States trade deficit widens and then we get more external debt.”

But multinationals “don’t have control over these big items,” he explained.

They can, however, mitigate the effect of fluctuations in foreign currencies in which they price and invoice goods by adopting hedging strategies – using financial instruments that provide a kind of insurance against losses caused by the changing exchange rate.

Most corporations already have hedging programs in place, and they change their plans on a quarterly or even monthly basis, sometimes trying to predict currency movements, Kyriba’s Bob Stark said.

But it’s not an exact science, he noted, especially in a time of great uncertainty about the direction of inflation, interest rates and the possibility of a recession.

Changing countries to cut costs

But “since the start of the pandemic, CFOs have gotten very good at looking at multiple scenarios and building on them,” Stark said.

Sporting goods giant Nike, for instance, warned Monday that currency effects would cut annual revenue by several percentage points. But the profit hit is much lower because of the hedging.

The current high volatility in foreign exchange markets also means it costs more to hedge, so some firms are choosing not to use those instruments.

Among the other tools at their disposal, multinationals can reduce their exposure with other techniques, such as by paying their Japanese suppliers in dollars, by renegotiating prices, or even by buying their supplies from different countries.

Or they can simply wait for the U.S. currency to weaken before repatriating their profits.

However, once the exchange rate has strengthened, there is limited room to maneuver, according to Nikolai Roussanov, a finance professor at the University of Pennsylvania – especially when prices are also rising because of supply chain issues and energy costs.

“If you try to react to something already happening, it might come to bite you later because some of these movements are quite transitory,” he said./AFP

Europe's governing body of soccer UEFA is considering new ways to combat the growing phenomenon of online racist abuse. UEFA said in a statement on Sunday that it would launch a program to tackle the issue by working with social media companies to remove harmful content from platforms and raising awareness.

It added that the program, which will start at the July 6-31 Women's European Championship, will work to "actively monitor, report and remedy" cases of online abuse.

England's Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka were the targets of online racist abuse after they missed penalties in a 3-2 shootout loss to Italy in last year's European Championship final.

A report published by FIFA last month revealed that more than half of players at last year's European Championship and Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) were subjected to discriminatory abuse online.

"The respect programme targets concrete actions to prevent abusive online behaviour and discrimination during all of its final competitions, including youth, women's and men's competition final matches for the next three years," UEFA said in a statement. "To ensure that harmful content is removed, UEFA is working directly with major social media platforms such as Twitter, Meta (Instagram and Facebook) and TikTok."

The program will include a "Real Scars" campaign featuring footballers Wendie Renard, Jorginho and Alisha Lehmann. That will "highlight the devastating effects of online abuse" and educate players, coaches and officials on how to defend themselves. "When you say something on social media, you do not realize how painful it is or the consequences it can have," Renard said. "It can leave a mark because we are all human, we all have emotions."/Reuters

Two more families were reunited on Saturday with their children who had been kidnapped by the PKK terrorist group in southeastern Turkey, according to security sources.

Since Sept. 3, 2019, the protesting families have been camping outside the Diyarbakır offices of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), a party the Turkish government says has links to the PKK.

Demonstrations have since spread to other provinces, including Van, Muş, Şırnak and Hakkari, and so far, a total of 37 families have been reunited with their children.

The Akdemir family and mother Fahime Tutmuş, who had joined the anti-PKK protests, were finally reunited with their children, after they were held for six and seven years, respectively, in Diyarbakır's Sur district.

The families expressed their happiness, saying: "May God bless the state."

In its more than 40-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK – listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the United States and the European Union – has been responsible for the deaths of more than 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.

The protests have borne fruit as dozens of children forcibly abducted or recruited by the terrorist group fled the PKK and reunited with their families./Daily Sabah
