Five PKK terrorists have surrendered to Turkish security forces, according to the Interior Ministry on Saturday.

The terrorists escaped the PKK terror group and turned themselves in to security forces as a result of the persuasion efforts by the police and gendarmerie forces in coordination with the Interior Ministry, the ministry said in a statement.

The terrorists joined the separatist terrorist group between 1995 and 2015, it said, adding they have operated in Turkey, Syria, and Iraq.

It said that one of the terrorists was associated with the terror group for 25 years.

With the latest additions, the number of terrorists, who laid down their arms through persuasion efforts, has reached 223 this year, the ministry said./aa

The Turkish Coast Guard rescued at least 29 asylum seekers, who were pushed back by Greece into Turkish waters, according to a security source on Saturday.

Acting on a tip-off, the coast guard teams rushed to the scene off Foca district of western Izmir province to bring the foreign national asylum seekers stranded on a life boat to the shore, said a source on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

They were transferred to the provincial migration office, the source added.

Turkey has been a key transit point for asylum seekers who want to cross into Europe to start new lives, especially those fleeing war and persecution.

Earlier this year, Turkey opened its gates to irregular migrants, accusing the EU of failing to keep its promises under a 2016 migrant deal.

Turkey hosts nearly 4 million Syrians, more than any other country in the world.

Once Turkey starts to mass-produce its own turboshaft helicopter engines, it will avert annual hi-tech imports worth $60 million, a senior official in the country said on Saturday.

"Today, we're witnessing a historic day for our defense industry," said Industry and Technology Minister Mustafa Varank, speaking at the opening ceremonies of a turboshaft engine delivery facility and a design center of TUSAS Engine Industries (TEI) in the central province of Eskisehir.

The engines are to be used in Turkey's first indigenous multirole helicopter, the T625 Gokbey -- a new generation, twin-engine, six-ton class chopper developed in response to growing market demand.

Underlining that the country had accomplished goals requiring high technology and advanced design skills thanks to its National Technology Move, Varank said the engine was designed, developed and produced entirely by TEI engineers and technicians in just three years.

Turkey is one of seven countries with gas turbine engine technology, he stressed.

"The new design center that will make indigenous engines will be the starting point of our new success stories."

Varank said that while the per-kilogram value of Turkish exports is currently at $1.50, this figure has risen to over $50 in the defense industry.

"The export value of our first national helicopter engine TS 1400 is $6,000 per kilogram," he added.

Tests of the engine, which produces 1,660 horsepower, were completed during the ceremony. The project had kicked off in 2017./aa

KUWAIT (KUNA) -- Kuwait Red Crescent Society has 200 volunteers contributing to organization of the National Assembly elections thus reflecting humanitarian role of Kuwaiti youth, Head of the Public Relations Department at KRCS Khaled Al-Zaid said Saturday.

Al-Zaid said in a statement to Kuwait News Agency (KUNA), the volunteers' participation in the electoral process is to help voters and government agencies by providing assistance to the elderly and people with special needs, first aid, spreading health instructions, and distributing masks and sterilizers.

KRCS formed committees to set role of volunteers and distribute them to polling stations according to number of voters, he added.

The KRCS volunteers have attended courses on first aid, training programs and instructions on how to provide humanitarian services on election day, Al-Zaid noted.

Volunteers help people in the polling centers and explain administrative and organizational procedures that must be applied and observed in the polling centers, he said.

Kuwaitis hoping for reform went to the polls on Saturday in a parliamentary election overshadowed by Covid-19, with facilities laid on for citizens infected with the disease to vote in special polling stations.

Kuwait has enforced some of the strictest regulations in the Gulf to combat the spread of the virus, imposing a months-long lockdown earlier this year.

While some of those curbs have been eased, over-the-top campaign events that traditionally draw thousands for lavish banquets were absent from this year’s election, while masks remain mandatory and temperature checks are routine when venturing outdoors.

Infected people or those under mandatory quarantine are usually confined to home, with electronic wristbands monitoring their movements.

But in an effort to respect their right to vote, authorities designated five polling stations -- one in each electoral district -- for them to cast their ballots, among the 102 across the country.

And on Saturday authorities set up security barriers around the polling stations to prevent gatherings, with designated lanes for entry and exit.

Mask-clad voters, who were also forced to wear gloves, were subject to temperature checks before entering the facilities where election officials stood behind glass barriers.

Unlike other oil-rich Gulf states, Kuwait has a lively political life with a parliament elected for four-year terms that enjoys wide legislative powers.

Political disputes are often fought out in the open.

But with more than 143,000 coronavirus cases to date, including 886 deaths, the election campaign has been toned down with a few banners hoisted over the streets. Instead, this year’s campaign has mainly been fought on social networks and in the media.

The usual themes are a constant though, from promises to fight corruption and plans to address youth employment, to freedom of expression, housing, education and the thorny issue of the “bidoon”, Kuwait’s stateless minority.

Some Kuwaitis have expressed their desire for change and reform in their country, where 70 percent of the 4.8 million population are foreigners.

A landmine explosion Friday killed a civilian in northern Syria.

The landmine planted by YPG/PKK terrorists in a village in Ayn al-Arab district, detonated Nov. 13 when a farmer was reportedly working in the field, according to sources.

Sheikh Nabi Hamo Bozi was critically injured by the explosion and died Friday.

Eight civilians, including children, were killed and 10 were injured in March and April because of landmine explosions in the district.

The YPG/PKK terror group took control of Ayn al-Arab, east of the Euphrates River, in January 2015, with the support of the US under the pretext of fighting the Daesh/ISIS terror group.

Despite a deal by Turkey and Russia in 2019, which forces the terror group to withdraw from the region, YPG/PKK terrorists continue to occupy Ayn al-Arab.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US and EU -- has been responsible for the deaths of nearly 40,000 people, including women, children and infants. The YPG is the PKK's Syrian offshoot.

French President Emmanuel Macron admitted Friday that violent police officers exist, according to local media.

“There are police who are violent" and “they need to be punished,” Macron said during an interview with online video platform Brut, according to Radio France Internationale, or RFI.

Macron said the Nov. 23 evacuation of asylum seekers from the Place de la Republique in the center of the capital was correct and they were later taken to a shelter. But he admitted that some police officers behaved wrongly during the evacuation.

“When you are not white, you are more likely to get checked by the police. You are identified as a problem factor, and that cannot be justified,” Macron was quoted as saying.

On criticism about a controversial security bill, Macron said: “I cannot let it be said that we are limiting freedoms in France."

“It's a big lie. We are not Hungary or Turkey," he said.

Asked about Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s remarks in which he said Macron was “trouble” for the French nation, the French leader said: “I believe in respect ... I think insults between political leaders is not the way to do things.”

“France has no problem with Islam,” he said. “We are a country that has always had a dialogue ... but we founded our Republic on the separation of religion from politics.”/aa

British advocacy groups have condemned France’s decision to shut down anti-racism group Collective Against Islamophobia in France (CCIF).

While announcing the move on Wednesday, Gerald Darmanin, France’s interior minister, accused the CCIF of carrying out “Islamist propaganda” for several years, allegations the group has vehemently refuted.

In a statement in response, London-based group CAGE said the decision “exposes the French state’s brazen hypocrisy in advocating ‘free speech’ while legally denying Muslims the freedom to speak and organize.”

CAGE is an advocacy organization that campaigns for “due process, the rule of law and an end to the injustices of the War on Terror.”

The statement said the CCIF was not only banned, but its staff “indefinitely blacklisted,” meaning they cannot set up new groups or speak publicly.

“Their freedom of association and expression has been suspended indefinitely,” CAGE said, adding that the decision followed “a series of raids on mosques, Islamic schools and homes.”

Muhammad Rabbani, managing director of CAGE, said: “Individuals linked to the CCIF have been muzzled in a manner only heard of in the most autocratic countries.”

“This disruption and attempt to weaken the Muslim community follows Macron’s announcement of a new ‘Separatism Law’ to curtail Muslim charity work and political campaigning.”

“It also follows an EU Joint Statement of a “united front against Islamism” – to distract the EU from French violations of ‘liberty, egality and fraternity’ and even EU laws,” he added.

He said that anyone who stands for the right to organize and collaborate for positive social change “cannot be silent any longer.”

“This is not the way to nurture trust between people and government. We must speak up with courage for those in France who are standing firm despite state repression,” Rabbani said.

The Arab Organization for Human Rights in UK (AOHR UK) also condemned the French government’s move to start inspections at mosques as part of its “campaign against separatism.”

“AOHR UK pointed out that the French government's policies towards Arabs and Muslims are in line with the policies of the extreme right, which calls for the closure of mosques and the imposition of strict control on Muslims, which fuels hostility to Muslims and increases attacks on them,” read a statement issued on Thursday.

Controversial campaign

The French government's actions against Muslim organizations have come in the aftermath of two brutal attacks in recent months – the beheading of a teacher in Paris who showed students cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad and a knife attack at a church in Nice that claimed three lives.

Muslim leaders across France have condemned these terrorist attacks, stressing that extremists abuse religion for their goals and their actions cannot be justified through Islam.

But French President Emmanuel Macron pledged a crackdown against what he called “Islamist separatism" to defend France's secular values, and said further measures would be considered by the government.

CCIF’s dissolution was part of this campaign and was approved by the Council of Ministers, which has the power to dissolve any organization or non-profit organization by decree, without prior judicial scrutiny.

Apart from the CCIF, the government also closed down BarakaCity, an international Muslim group, at the end of October.

The group was alleged to have links to radical groups, an accusation it has denied.

Turkey will see a larger volume of investment flow in the next five years, said the head of Turkey's presidential investment office on Friday.

Turkey's investment office participated with Turkish investors and startups in Web Summit 2020, which is among the most important technology conferences in the world, according to a statement by the office.

In the summit, a session, Turkey: Reshaping Venture Capital in Emerging Markets, was held by the presidential investment office with the attendance of Turkish entrepreneurs.

Burak Daglioglu, head of the presidential investment office, said in a statement: "As the Presidency Investment Office, venture capital and technology enterprises are among our priority agenda items. Istanbul also needs to reach its deserved place all over the world, as an entrepreneurship center."

Stressing Turkey has a highly developed and a supportive entrepreneurial ecosystem, Daglioglu said international funds have invested in the country to gain higher returns.

Enis Hulli, partner of 500 Startups Istanbul, an investment firm, also said the total amount invested in startups is around $100 million annually in Turkey, according to a statement by the office.

"Turkey was one of the leading countries in this field with a total output volume of $3.5 billion since 2018. Considering the increasing interest of foreign investors and acquisitions, Turkey is one of the most profitable markets in the world for early stage investors," he added./aa

As part of counter-narcotics operations across Istanbul, at least 319 people dealing with the illegal drug trade were arrested by police, officials said Friday.

Over a ton of illegal drugs, including over 477 kilograms (1,050 pounds) of heroin and over 321 kg of methamphetamine (770 lbs), were seized from Oct. 1 to Nov. 30.

During the operations conducted in all 39 districts of Istanbul, 45 pistols and rifles were also seized by the police.

Police also conducted operations Friday in southeastern Gaziantep and southern Adana provinces, where 75kg (165 lbs) of methamphetamine and 77 kg (169 lbs) of heroin were seized./aa
