Turkish security forces seized more than 9 kilograms (20 pounds) of A-4 type plastic explosives in eastern Hakkari province, the Interior Ministry said late Friday.

It said the explosives buried in the ground were found in a house in the Yuksekova district.

One suspect was arrested and 426 liters (113 gallons) of acetic anhydride used as heroin raw material was also seized during the operation, along with two steel vests, two drug press machines, a precision scale and a notebook containing information on drug reproduction.

Earlier in the day, more than 204 kilograms (20 pounds) of heroin were seized in a truck in Yuksekova./aa

The EU’s foreign policy chief said on Friday that migration was an “important issue” for the entirety of Europe.

“We have to deal with the migration problem as a European problem. We have to make all member states understand that they have to help to share the burden,” Josep Borrell said at a news meeting at the Sigonella Naval Air Station Airport, in Sicily, Italy.

“And this is the purpose of the new Migration Pact that the Commission, and also me, as part of the Commission, have been proposing to member states, and the member states are still discussing it,” he said.

On Operation Irini, the EU initiative to implement a UN arms embargo on Libya, Borrell said: “It is one year of Operation Irini and the situation in Libya is much better than one year ago.”

“The international community’s decision of controlling the arms embargo has helped the stability in Libya,” he said.

Noting that the operation was not about migration, he said: “When we launched Operation Irini, some member states were afraid that Irini was going to create a kind of pull effect: ‘You send boats and the boats will attract migrants because if they know that there is a boat they will be saved by the boat.’ And I had to spend a lot of time and political work to convince them that Irini could work to enforce the arms embargo without creating a pull effect.”

“Irini has not been involved in migrants issues,” he said. “It has been doing its work: arms embargo and at the same time trying to help and train the Libyan coast guards to make the Libyan coast guards be a part of the solution to the problem.

“Irini is ready to increase its efforts in training the Libyan coast guards, providing assets and providing training,” he said.

“Migration is an important problem for Italy, it is an important problem for Sicily, the solution has to come from Europe and we have to engage all member states,” he added.

Noting the importance of “trying to save lives, to fight against irregular migration, to fight against the smugglers,” he said, “at the same time to open ways for regular migration.”

Earlier on Friday, Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin urged Europe to “take more active, prominent role” in the migration crisis in an article he penned for the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR)./aa

Dozens of protesters demonstrated on Friday against a Zionist court’s decision to evict several Palestinian families from their homes in a neighborhood in the occupied East Jerusalem in favor of Israeli settlers.

Demonstrators, including families who are facing eviction, gathered in the Sheikh Jarrah neighborhood to protest the controversial decision.

They held banners that read, "Sheikh Jarrah is my home," “No to eviction order,” and “No to occupation.”

Protestors chanted slogans condemning the Zionist occupation of East Jerusalem that began in 1967.

The Jerusalem District Court ruled on March 3 that seven Palestinian families with 31 occupants should vacate their homes by Aug. 1, according to Palestine’s WAFA news agency.

The same court in February rejected another appeal by six other families against evictions from their homes.

Thirty-seven Palestinian families have been living in the neighborhood since 1956, establishing homes before the Zionist occupation in 1967 under an agreement with the Jordanian government and the UNRWA.

But Zionist settlers claim the land was owned by Jews before 1948 and they are demanding the eviction of families.

Notably, Palestinian families say they have documents confirming their ownership of the land.

All settlements in the occupied East Jerusalem and West Bank are considered illegal under international law./aa

The Dow Jones lost 0.5% for the week, while the S&P 500 and the Nasdaq declined 0.8% each.

Although the VIX volatility index rose to as high as 23.17 during trading hours, the fear index later fell to 20.86 for a 3.3% daily loss.

Five human traffickers were arrested and over 80 foreign nationals illegally brought into the country were held in southeastern Turkey, according to a security source on Friday.

Local police teams carried out an operation against migrant smugglers on the Hilvan-Siverek highway in the Sanliurfa province, said the source on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on speaking to the media.

A total of 82 Afghan nationals were held in the operation, while five human traffickers were arrested.

The Afghan nationals will be referred to the provincial migration office, the source added.

Turkey has been a key transit point for asylum seekers who want to cross into Europe to start new lives, especially those fleeing war and persecution.

It hosts nearly 4 million refugees, including more than 3.6 million Syrians, more than any other country in the world./aa

Canada and Britain announced ratification of a new trade treaty Friday that officials say will benefit both countries.

The deal is especially welcome during the pandemic, said Mary Ng, Canada’s minister of small business, export promotion and international trade.

“Canada and the United Kingdom share a unique, and historic relationship. As we continue to address the pandemic, and look ahead, international trade will be essential to ensuring a strong, inclusive recovery that generates growth and creates good jobs and prosperity for Canadians,” Ng said.

"The Canada-UK Trade Continuity Agreement marks a new chapter in Canada-UK relations and provides stability for businesses and workers in both of our countries.”

The UK is Canada’s second largest services trading partner that amounts to more than $14.5 billion annually.

Trade has been covered by a memorandum of understanding that allows preferential treatment of tariffs between the two countries.
But Ng said the trade deal signals a step forward.

Under the terms, Canadian exporters and businesses will continue to receive “preferential access to the UK market and 98 percent of Canadian products will continue to be exported to the UK tariff-free,” Canadian officials explained in a statement.

The deal comes as the UK, which left the EU as of Jan. 31, 2020, negotiates new trade agreements./aa

China sends children of oppressed minority Uyghurs who are in exile to orphan camps, according to Amnesty International.

In a new report released Friday, Amnesty called on China to release Uyghur children who are kept forcibly in orphanages without the consent of their parents.

In the report, exiled parents who say their children were sent to orphanages spoke to the human rights group.

Mihriban Kader and Ablikim Memtinin said that in 2016 when they fled to Italy from Xinjiang -- where the Uyghurs form the largest group -- they left their four children in the temporary care of grandparents.

Soon afterward the grandmother was taken to a camp, the mother Kader related.

"Our other relatives didn’t dare to look after my children after what had happened to my parents," she said, adding: "They were afraid that they would be sent to camps, too."

In 2019, Kader and Memtinin got a permit from Italy to bring their children to join them, but the children were seized by Chinese police on the way and sent to an orphanage, the group said.

"Now my children are in the hands of the Chinese government and I am not sure I will be able to meet them again in my lifetime," the mother said.

Omer and Meryem Faruh, who fled to Turkey in 2016 after police demanded they hand over their passports, left their two children in the care of Meryem’s parents at home as they lacked travel documents, Amnesty said.

Later they found out their relatives had been taken to internment camps, and they have not heard the voices of their children since, Amnesty added.

Alkan Akad, Amnesty International's China researcher, said that China’s mass detention campaign in Xinjiang has put separated families in an impossible bind, adding that their parents face persecution and arbitrary detention if they try to return home to care for their children.

The Xinjiang region is home to around 10 million Uighurs. The Turkic Muslim group, which makes up around 45% of Xinjiang’s population, has long accused China's authorities of cultural, religious and, economic discrimination.

Up to 1 million people, or about 7% of the Muslim population in Xinjiang, have been incarcerated in an expanding network of "political re-education" camps, according to US officials and UN experts./aa

The European Union should support Turkey for hosting more than four million refugees, the EU’s foreign policy chief said Thursday.

Josep Borrell made the remarks after visiting the command center of Operation Irini, the EU initiative to implement a UN arms embargo on Libya.

On the EU-Turkey refugee deal, Borrell said illegal immigration was stopped and many lives were saved thanks to the agreement.

“This agreement is still valid and its implementation should continue,” he added.

Underlining that Turkey hosts more than four million refugees, he said the EU should ease the country’s burden.

Most of the EU funding under this agreement goes directly to immigrants, not the Turkish government, he noted.

Earlier in the day, Borrell met with Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio and held a press conference.

“On Turkey, also we have a momentum, a good momentum, following their exploratory talks with Greece,” Borrell said.

“I will present a report to the European Union leaders, where I will outline current trends and suggest a way ahead to consolidate a constructive attitude, while at the same time being ready to take measures if necessary,” he stressed.

Borrell and Maio will discuss the report with other European Union colleagues during the EU Foreign Ministers' meeting, which will be held on Monday.

Turkey has been a key transit point for asylum seekers aiming to cross into Europe to start new lives, especially those fleeing war and persecution.

Turkey hosts nearly 4 million refugees, more than any other country in the world. Ankara says it has so far spent more than $40 billion from its own resources for the refugees and has stressed that the EU should do more to share the burden./aa

US President Joe Biden met virtually with permanent representatives of the UN Security Council, calling for its action on regional crises, the White House said Thursday.

During the meeting, Biden reaffirmed the US commitment to values-based global leadership and re-engagement with international institutions, in particular the UN, the White House said in a statement.

"The president also noted the need for UNSC action on a range of regional crises, including those in Burma, Ethiopia, Libya, Syria and Yemen," said the statement.

Biden and the UN diplomats also discussed the COVID-19 pandemic and global health security.

"The President reiterated the importance of working with global partners and through multilateral institutions to end the pandemic, improve global health security, and ensure that our nations drive an equitable and sustainable economic recovery," it said.

Biden said the US intends to formally join the UN's Group of Friends on Climate and Security./aa

Palestinian health authorities confirmed 18 fatalities from the coronavirus pandemic Thursday along with 2,311 infections over the past 24 hours.

The Health Ministry said in a statement that 1,807 cases were recorded in the occupied West Bank and 234 infections were registered in East Jerusalem while the blockaded Gaza Strip confirmed 270 cases.

The overall virus tally has reached 245,790 confirmed cases, including 2,608 fatalities.

The statement said the number of COVID-19 patients in critical condition stands at 190.

A total of 219,427 patients in the country have won the battle against the virus so far, it added.

Palestinian Health Minister Mai al-Kaila warned Tuesday that medical conditions in Palestine have become "extremely dangerous" due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Hospital occupancy in Palestine has reached 100%, al-Kaila said.

A significant increase has been observed in the number of intubated patients and those receiving treatment in intensive care units, she noted.

The West Bank and Gaza Strip have seen a significant surge in new infections and fatalities in recent weeks after an initial drop in daily cases./aa
