A spokesperson for Mayo Clinic told NBC News in an email that the number — only from the nationwide medical system's Minnesota and Wisconsin locations — comprised almost one-third of the 2,981 coronavirus cases among its Midwest staff since the start of the pandemic in March.

Ginger Plumbo said a majority of the staff who tested positive, about 93 percent, contracted the virus from “community spread.”

“Across the Midwest, Mayo Clinic currently has approximately 1,500 staff with work restrictions related to COVID-19 exposures, or are unable to work due to a COVID-19 diagnosis,” Plumbo said in a statement.

She said the staffing shortage caused by the recent outbreak forced the medical center to shuffle health practitioners across state lines — and even call retired staff back into service.

“We are bringing retirees back from recent retirements, having research nurses move into patient care roles temporarily, bringing staff in from our other sites,” Plumbo said.

She added that Mayo Clinic was reducing elective care and redeploying those staff to help with staffing related to Covid-19.

Amy Williams, dean of clinical practices at Mayo Clinic, said at a press conference on Tuesday that the Intensive Care Unit at its Rochester, Minnesota, campus was at full capacity with 32 Covid-19 patients and is hoping to expand that center by a dozen beds, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reported.

“That’s not good,” Williams said. “It tells us we’re in a surge.”

Williams said the recent Covid-19 outbreak among staff was an example of how transmissible the virus was.

“It shows you how easy it is to get COVID-19 in the Midwest,” Williams said. “Our staff are being infected mostly due to community spread, and this impacts our ability to care for patients.”

“We need everyone in the communities we serve to do their part to limit the spread of COVID-19,” she urged.

Armenia will be held accountable in international courts for the crimes it committed on Azerbaijani lands, President Ilham Aliyev said on his visit to the liberated territories this week.

Dressed in military uniforms, Aliyev and First Lady Mehriban Aliyeva -- who is also the country’s vice president -- on Monday visited the Fuzuli and Jabrayil districts to monitor the area freed after three decades of Armenian occupation.

Aliyev noted that all buildings have been destroyed and looted in the area, adding that the goal of Armenian forces was that Azerbaijanis should never live there again.

"We will live here! We will live forever! We will restore all these buildings, all of them. Notice what is left of them. Has any international organization raised this issue in 30 years? Has any monitoring been carried out here? The whole world will see now what they have done to the city of Jabrayil."

"They did not leave behind a single safe building," he said, adding that besides a military unit Armenians built for themselves, all other infrastructure, houses, buildings, schools, and public facilities have been destroyed.

"They will be held accountable for this. They will answer in international courts," he said.

Aliyev underlined that international organizations and experts will come to visit the area, and all damage will be assessed.

"The damage caused to us over 30 years will be calculated. The enemy who is destroying Kalbajar these days, cutting down forests, setting buildings and schools on fire will be held to account," he said.

Noting that "they [Armenian forces] have no conscience, no shame, no morality whatsoever," the president stressed that Azerbaijan will draw a "master plan" for restoration work.

"Relevant instructions have been given. A master plan will be developed for each city. All office buildings, public buildings, schools, and medical centers will be established here. All infrastructure will be put in place. Streets, parks, and alleys will be built. Victory monuments will be erected in all cities and life will return here."

He went on to say that the people of Azerbaijan will "live, build, and create" in those lands again, noting that today's history "will never be erased".

"These destroyed houses are witnesses to Armenian savagery. Azerbaijani people used to live in these houses. The hated enemy came here and drove them out of their lands, destroyed their buildings, appropriated, and plundered their property. The enemy is a thief, an immoral, and dishonest enemy," he said.

New Fuzuli-Shusha highway

During his visit, Aliyev attended the groundbreaking ceremony of a road project from the Fuzuli district to the Shusha city, both recently liberated from the occupation of Armenian forces.

The construction of the road, which began with the settlement of Alkhanli, has already started upon the instruction of the president.

Calling it a "historic" and "a very significant day" in the life of Azerbaijan, Aliyev said: "The foundation of the Fuzuli-Shusha highway is being laid today."

He also congratulated all people of Azerbaijan on this occasion, noting that the road is very important because it leads Azerbaijan to Shusha, "the crown of Karabakh".

That became the first project to be implemented in the liberated lands, Aliyev recalled.

"This road will be very comfortable and broad. This road will allow us the opportunity to get to Shusha and back quite comfortably," he said.

Azerbaijani flag in city of Fuzuli

The first couple then moved to the city of Fuzuli, where Aliyev hoisted the tri-color Azerbaijani flag.

"The Azerbaijani flag has been raised in Fuzuli. We have returned to Fuzuli. But it hurts to see the destroyed villages and the city of Fuzuli along the road. Look what these savages have done to our city!" he said.

Aliyev compared the Armenian forces with a "savage tribe" which had passed through the lands and destroyed everything there.

"They wanted to destroy and plunder everything, to erase our cultural, historical, and religious heritage, but they could not achieve what they wanted. Because we had to come back, we had to return. We have come back, we have returned," he added.

The Azerbaijani leader also said the destroyed city of Fuzuli is "a living witness to Armenian fascism".

"The whole world must see this and not remain silent, as it has been silent and indifferent for 30 years. That indifference actually reinforced Armenian occupation."

Recalling that the Azerbaijani Armed Forces liberated over 300 villages and settlements, Aliyev said: "The enemy's back was broken, the enemy knelt down and was forced to surrender on Nov. 10 by signing an act of capitulation precisely due to our strength. We forced the enemy to do so, we showed the enemy where it belongs, we showed the greatness of the Azerbaijani people."

Clashes, peace deal

Relations between the former Soviet republics of Azerbaijan and Armenia have been tense since 1991, when the Armenian military occupied Nagorno-Karabakh, also known as Upper Karabakh, a territory recognized as part of Azerbaijan, and seven adjacent regions.

Before the second Karabakh War, about 20% of Azerbaijan's territory -- including Nagorno-Karabakh and neighboring regions -- has been under Armenian occupation for nearly three decades.

New clashes erupted on Sept. 27 and the Armenian army continued its attacks on civilian and Azerbaijani forces, even violating three humanitarian cease-fire agreements for 44 days.

On Nov. 10, the two countries signed a Russia-brokered agreement to end fighting and work toward a comprehensive resolution.

Turkey welcomed the truce as a "great victory" for Azerbaijan.

An estimated 10,087 people have fled the Ivory Coast fearing violence following the disputed presidential polls held on Oct.31, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) said in a report Wednesday.

“Numbers continue to rise as tensions persist. More than 90 per cent of the new arrivals have fled to Liberia, where relief items, food and cash-based interventions are being delivered,” the report said.

Many of the fleeing refugees are opting to be based near the border “to observe the situation and return as soon as the situation returns to normal,” the UNHCR said.

At least 5,500 people are estimated to be internally displaced Persons (IDPs) in Ivory Coast due to the violence triggered by the presidential elections, which left at least 12 people dead due to “intercommunity clashes in Abidjan and the central and western regions.”

Some media reports, meanwhile, claimed that the post-election violence in the country has left at least 85 people killed and over 480 others injured.

“UNHCR has set up contingency plans and is engaging with authorities and humanitarian partners,” while all Ivory Coast’s neighboring countries “guarantee access to asylum on their territory despite border restrictions due to COVID19,” the UN agency report said.

The report came at a time when Ivory Coast’s President Alassane Ouattara turned down the opposition’s transition call as unrest continues following last month’s controversial elections.

“For all those who have an idea about a transition, they can always dream. There will be no transition in Ivory Coast,” Ouattara said at a political meeting on late Tuesday.

The remarks came a week after the president agreed to talk with the opposition.

Along with other demands, the opposition insists that Ouattara must give up power if dialogue is to continue.

The Oct. 31 elections saw a boycott and call for civil disobedience from the opposition over Ouattara’s candidacy, who went on to win a controversial third term as president.

In his speech on Tuesday, the president said he was “outraged” by the violence and called for peace./aa

Voices across Spain’s political spectrum are calling for Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska to resign over his “disappointing” and “irresponsible” handling of a growing humanitarian crisis on the Canary Islands.

This year, at least 16,760 migrants have arrived by boat to Spain’s Atlantic archipelago -- a tenfold rise compared to 2019 -- according to the Interior Ministry. Hundreds more have died on the dangerous journey.

A massive influx of irregular arrivals to the islands, combined with the coronavirus pandemic, has led to chaos in recent weeks.

Last week, the Human Rights Watch called out Spain for detaining more than 2,000 people on the Arguineguin pier in undignified conditions and without proper legal procedures.

The improvised detention area was created in part to conduct medical screenings for coronavirus.

On Tuesday, around 220 Moroccan migrants were evacuated from the pier and taken by bus to the capital city of Gran Canaria. They were released with nothing to eat and nowhere to go.

Most stayed in a downtown square where some local residents brought them food and water. Spanish news agency EFE interviewed people who said they were held on the pier for five days, given little food and were not able to shower.

Following the incident, Laura Fuentes, the leader of the Canary Island Podemos party, called for the “immediate resignation” of Marlaska.

Spain’s interior minister is a member of the Socialist Party and Fuentes said it was “deeply disappointing” that a progressive government has “abandoned” the migrants and shifted responsibility onto local authorities.

On Wednesday in the Spanish parliament, members of the Canary Coalition, Popular Party, and Citizens Party (Ciudadanos) told the minister to step down for incompetence and inaction.

Marlaska refused to resign, saying he would open an investigation into Tuesday’s incident, and blamed the former conservative government for dismantling the infrastructure to hold and process migrants and refugees.

Some of the people trapped on the pier have been relocated to empty tourist accommodations, while others are being transferred to a military camp that has a reported capacity of around 800 people.

According to the Red Cross, on Wednesday morning, around 2,300 people were still on the overcrowded pier after 102 more people were rescued at sea by the Maritime Safety and Rescue Society overnight.

Local media reported that just 200 people were expected to be moved from the pier to the military camp on Wednesday./aa

The double standards of western states have directly contributed to the rise of Islamophobia to alarming levels.

In European countries, while anti-Semitism is considered a crime, insulting Islam is allowed under the guise of freedom of expression.

Experts call for a distinction between freedom of expression and hate speech against all religions, including Islam, and for laws that criminalize anti-Islamism.

"While anti-Semitism is banned, I cannot understand that Islamophobia is considered freedom of opinion," Amr Moussa, a former Arab League Secretary-General, said on Facebook.

Moussa urged constitutional and legal institutions in countries where Muslims are exposed to discrimination, maltreatment and double standards to immediately fight against injustice and to criminalize insulting Islamic religion and values.

Ali Bakir, a Lebanese researcher and journalist, told Anadolu Agency that the West, especially France, has double standards when it comes to Muslims.

Bakir said: "Any criticism against Israel is considered anti-Semitism and is not seen within the freedom of expression, the critic is judged."

He said: "If the West were honest, instead of undermining Muslims on the pretext of freedom of expression, they would act consistently and enact laws to protect them by defending the same freedom against all religions and beliefs."

He added that such laws will prevent the rise of Islamophobia in Europe and prevent politicians from using this issue as election material.

Last month, French President Emmanuel Macron accused French Muslims of "separatism," and described Islam as a "religion in crisis."

Macron's attitude against Islam, the republication of caricatures insulting Prophet Muhammad and their projection on buildings have triggered boycotts of French products in several countries, including Qatar, Kuwait, Algeria, Sudan, Palestine, and Morocco./aa

A Muslim woman in the US was charged after she was pulled off an American Airlines flight following another passenger's request and later arrested while refusing to remove her hijab.

"Spoiler alert: it was, in fact, me who got charged. Go figure," Amani al-Khatahtbeh, 28, a Jordanian-American activist and blogger from the state of New Jersey, wrote Tuesday on Twitter.

The Nov. 14 incident began at Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey when Al-Khatahtbeh was at a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint.

She said a white man behind her insisted that she was cutting in while she was still taking off her shoes.

"When I said he could wait like everyone else, he started going off about how he’s 'pre check' and 'first class'," Al-Khatahtbeh wrote.

"He then proceeded to not only shove his things before mine, but then RUN THROUGH THE MACHINE and TSA did NOTHING! Not only did they not do anything, a TSA officer had the audacity to tell ME to 'cut it out'," she said. "Y’all know if I, a VEILED MUSLIM WOMAN, had the audacity to throw a temper tantrum and run through TSA security, I would have gotten BODIED. I would have been detained, missed my flight, possibly gotten charged, etc. We need to resurrect the @muslimgirl #ShitTSASays column.”

Al-Khatahtbeh, the first Muslim woman to run for US Congress from the state and founder of the website, MuslimGirl, later continued tweeting while onboard the flight.

"ONE OF YOUR MANAGERS IS TRYING TO GET POLICE TO REMOVE ME OFF 9:55 EWR TO CHARLOTTE," she wrote.

But American Airlines responded via Twitter by saying, "Your comments concern us and we'd like to look into this. Please DM your record locator and what happened."

Next, Al-Khatahtbeh was being pulled from the flight. It was witnessed by a passenger who posted two videos on social media.

In one, Al-Khatahtbeh is heard saying that she would not be removed unless another person in first class was also moved, and she asks why his words are taken above hers. "If you're taking me off, you have to take both off us," she said.

In the second video, uniformed personnel approaches Al-Khatahtbeh's seat and tells her he is following instructions to escort her from the plane.

Al-Khatahtbeh stressed that she needs to be given a reason why she is being removed, and is informed: "There's a passenger onboard who does not feel comfortable with you being here."

"I do not feel comfortable with that passenger,” she said in response. “I want that passenger removed from the plane as well."

In a later tweet, the passenger who took the videos said, "Police escorted her off the plane in handcuffs!!, to which Al-Khatahtbeh replied ‘Simply flying as a Muslim woman makes people uncomfortable.... unbelievable.’”

Al-Khatahtbeh said she was asked to remove her hijab during her arrest but she repeatedly asserted her constitutional right to keep it on.

"I heard one cop ask another, 'Didn’t we have to deal with this w/ that Sikh guy the other day?' When you stand up for yourself & your rights, you do so for everyone after you," she wrote.

Selaedin Maksut, Executive Director of Council on American–Islamic Relations New Jersey, said via Twitter that Al-Khatahtbeh was handcuffed by police because "she refused to take her hijab off during processing."

"Muslim woman should not have to endure such humiliation bc they hold firm to their religious beliefs," he added.

Al-Khatahtbeh later summarized the incident as "The last 6 hours of my life have been draining & traumatizing. Today I got arrested for the first time because a man that insisted he was 'first class' felt entitled to blow past me at TSA security, then have me removed from our @AmericanAir flight bc he 'felt uncomfortable.'”

The Muslim Girl website also detailed the incident, saying, "Other passengers began to yell at staff to have the man removed as well," according to a Facebook Live video Al-Khatahtbeh shared./aa

Turkey must concentrate much more on production, investment, employment, and exports, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Wednesday.

"There is a new era ahead of us now," said Erdogan, addressing an economic council meeting of the Turkish Union of Chambers and Commodity Exchanges in the capital Ankara.

The government will proceed by maintaining fiscal discipline, with a growth and employment-oriented approach, he stressed.

Noting that financial and price stability are to be simultaneously ensured, Erdogan noted that immediately cutting inflation down to the single-digits would be the government's top priority.

He said Ankara will continue to provide all suitable conditions for both domestic and international investors.

"We will see that our country stands out positively in production, employment, export, and growth," Erdogan noted.

The president underlined that Turkey would end the third quarter with a strong economic growth thanks to leading data for September.

"I believe we'll end the year with positive growth, despite the ongoing challenges due to the coronavirus outbreak," said Erdogan.

Touching on interest rates, he added: "We should not allow ourinvestors to be crushed by high interest rates."

He noted that generating employment, boosting exports, making production and investments are not possible with high interest rates.

"We give great importance to discussing with our business circle on all matters related to the economy," Erdogan said./aa

Turkey "neutralized" eight YPG/PKK terrorists in the Operation Peace Spring area in northern Syria, according to Turkish National Defense Ministry on Wednesday.

Terrorists, detected by the Turkish unmanned aerial vehicles in tunnels they dug to infiltrate to the Operation Peace Spring area, were neutralized by Turkish commandos in a successful operation, the ministry said on Twitter.

Turkish authorities use the term "neutralize" to imply the terrorists in question surrendered or were killed or captured.

Since 2016, Turkey has launched a trio of successful anti-terror operations across its border in northern Syria to prevent the formation of a terror corridor and enable a peaceful settlement of residents: Euphrates Shield (2016), Olive Branch (2018), and Peace Spring (2019).

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and EU -- has been responsible for the deaths of 40,000 people, including women, children and infants.

The YPG is the PKK's Syrian offshoot./aa

Greece ordered its coast guard to push asylum seekers to Turkish territorial waters, according to a string of emails exchanged between EU border agency Frontex and the Greek coast guard.

“A redacted chain email from the EU's border agency, Frontex, made available following a freedom of information request, clearly shows that the Hellenic Coast Guard (HCG) received orders to push migrants back into Turkish territorial waters,” EU Observer reported.

“Such pushbacks are illegal under international law given that people have the right to enter Greece to claim asylum,” it added.

In an e-mail dated March 6, 2020, an officer of the Greek coast guard reported that he was given instructions to push asylum seekers in a rubber boat to Turkish territorial waters.

A Danish coast guard officer in the area did not follow the instructions and reported the situation to his superiors.

Later, the asylum seekers were taken to the Kos Port.

Frontex Director Fabrice Leggeri described the incident as a "misunderstanding", but the European Parliament has requested an investigation, noting that similar push-backs occur frequently.

Greek officials claim that they comply with international law and that the allegations in question are not true, although Frontex e-mails clearly documented the push-back instructions./aa
