Last Tuesday, at its headquarters, Mercy International signed a cooperation agreement with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees to support displaced families in Afghanistan.
Strategic Partnership
The Chairman of the Board of Directors of Mercy International Yahya Suleiman Al-Aqili expressed his welcome to this important partnership, noting that its main goal is to enable affected families to face life's challenges and live with dignity, while providing them with hope to endure.
Al-Aqili stressed that this agreement represents a necessary step towards finding sustainable solutions to the problems facing these families.
In his speech during the signing ceremony, Al-Aqili praised the pioneering humanitarian role played by the State of Kuwait; leadership, government and people, until it became at the forefront of countries supporting charitable and humanitarian work worldwide.
He explained that the wise leadership, represented by His Highness the Amir of the country, and His Highness the Crown Prince, may God protect them, have given charitable work their special attention, and have been keen to support and protect it in light of regional and international challenges and changes, through the effective role of the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Social Affairs, and the Kuwaiti society with its giving, help and support for the sustainability of Kuwait's charitable work that helps the needy around the world.
Al-Aqili touched on the importance of signing this agreement in light of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan, which requires concerted efforts to alleviate the suffering of the most vulnerable groups.
He pointed out that statistics show that more than 28 million people in Afghanistan need humanitarian assistance, with 3.5 million people internally displaced; which highlights the size of the crisis that particularly affects women and children.
Al-Aqili added that this agreement is the fourth of its kind between the International Mercy Association and the High Commissioner.
He explained that the International Mercy Association is based on the concept of partnership with international, local and regional institutions based on two basic principles; the first is cooperation in righteousness and piety as our Lord Almighty commanded in His saying: (And cooperate in righteousness and piety) (Al-Ma'idah: 2), and this cooperation is the realization of this great meaning in the Book of Allah Almighty, and the second is that partnership in charitable work is a strategic choice for the International Mercy Association whether at the local, regional, Islamic and international levels.
He added: The association has several partnerships in each of these axes. At the local level, Mercy has many partnerships with Kuwaiti charitable associations, and at the regional level, partnerships with Qatar Charity and the King Salman Center in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and at the Islamic level, the association has partnerships with the Islamic Development Bank that exceeded $40 million in reconstruction projects in the Gaza Strip and Palestine, and had a great impact on those who deserve it, in addition to its international partnerships with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Al-Aqili praised the mutual trust between Kuwaiti charitable institutions and international institutions, stressing that such partnerships embody the high level of professionalism enjoyed by Kuwaiti charitable societies in managing humanitarian projects.
He pointed out that the International Mercy Society enjoys a close and continuous relationship with the state's ministries, bodies, and humanitarian agencies of the United Nations, including the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees; as it is the body most specialized in the issues of displaced persons and refugees in the world.
He stressed that this close relationship extends over many years of work and joint cooperation in supporting urgent humanitarian issues around the world, and is based on mutual respect and trust, and achieving common humanitarian and charitable goals; in accordance with the fixed principle of the International Mercy Society; which is to provide the most beneficial to the neediest, and in light of its current strategy (2025 - 2022 AD) based on maximizing the impact according to the slogan "An impact that remains".
At the end of his statement, Al-Aqili expressed his hopes that this agreement will achieve its goals of alleviating the suffering of the brotherly Afghan people, asking God Almighty to crown the various humanitarian efforts with success and guidance.

In turn, the representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Kuwait, Nisreen Rabiaan, said: This agreement enhances the renewed cooperation between the Commission and the International Mercy Association.

Rabian indicated that the Commission is working to distribute 100% of Zakat funds without deducting any operating expenses, in line with the religious fatwas issued in this regard.
She explained that statistics for the year 2024 indicate that about 24 million people in Afghanistan will need humanitarian assistance, and that more than 87% of them suffer from food insecurity.
She stated that at least one million children will be at risk of acute malnutrition, and for the rest of this year, economic instability and increased humanitarian needs are expected to continue, as a result of secondary displacement and climate change.

The project aimed to distribute 6,000 food baskets of basic and necessary food supplies to those affected, with one basket for each family, with a total number of beneficiaries reaching 36,000 people, sufficient for a month; the basket contained more than 30 kilograms of flour, sugar, lentils, rice, cooking oil, sauce, dates, chickpeas, and hibiscus.

The plane took off from Abdullah Al-Mubarak Air Base to Port Sudan Airport, carrying 40 tons of food and medical supplies and ambulances to support and provide relief to the displaced people inside Sudan, accompanied by a relief delegation from participating associations and organizations.
There have been multiple humanitarian appeals from charitable associations and civil society organizations to work on a rapid response and urgent humanitarian intervention to alleviate the suffering of those affected and stand with them in their ordeal.
UN statistics indicate that more than 7.4 million people have been displaced inside and outside Sudan since the outbreak of the war on April 15, and the expansion of the conflict in central and eastern Sudan has led to the destruction of the most important areas of major crop production, and a significant increase in humanitarian needs according to the Famine Early Warning Systems Network.
