Turkish defense company FNSS on Monday announced it would provide amphibious armored combat earthmover (AACE) vehicles and logistic support services to the Philippine military.

Under a contract signed between FNSS and the Philippines' Department of National Defense (DND), the vehicles will be delivered and training and logistics support services completed by the end of March 2023, according to a statement by the defense firm.

The project's main goal is to support the Philippine military's modernization efforts, increasing its combat engineering capabilities.

After being manufactured at FNSS facilities in Turkey, the vehicles will be delivered to the Philippines following tests in both countries.

Philippine army personnel are to be trained to use the vehicles as part of the FNSS's integrated logistics support services.

The AACE, which is the first and only combat engineering dozer vehicle with amphibious capabilities in the world, has been deployed by the Turkish Armed Forces in the past and with this sale, will be exported for the first time to another country.

Under another project, the FNSS will provide and integrate stabilized one-man turrets into tracked armored vehicles in the Philippines.

The turrets are slated to be integrated on the vehicles in October 2021, with training and logistics support services to be completed by December that year.

The Philippine military favored the one-man turrets of different caliber armaments over other products produced by global defense industry giants due to its cost-effectiveness and superior technical features.

Both projects will be under the Defense Industry Cooperation Agreement signed between Ankara and Manila./aa

Turkish troops serving in the Operation Peace Spring area in northern Syria distributed food and winter clothing to children, the country’s National Defense Ministry announced on Monday.

The Turkish soldiers carried out the distribution of the aid under the coordination of Turkey’s Disaster and Emergency Management Authority, said the ministry.

The aid included 75 food packages, 200 sweaters, 250 coats, and 250 plastic boots for children, as well as 1,500 diapers for babies.

Turkey on Oct. 9, 2019 launched Operation Peace Spring to eliminate YPG/PKK terrorists from northern Syria east of the Euphrates River to secure Turkey's borders, aid in the safe return of Syrian refugees, and ensure Syria's territorial integrity.

Since then, Turkey has reached agreements with both the US and Russia to force the terrorist group to withdraw from the planned terror-free zone.

In its more than 30-year terror campaign against Turkey, the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the US, and EU -- has been responsible for the deaths of nearly 40,000 people, including women, children, and infants. The YPG is the PKK’s Syrian offshoot./aa

RIYADH (Reuters) -Saudi Arabia will reopen its airspace and land and sea border to Qatar as of Monday, Kuwait’s foreign minister said in televised comments, citing a deal towards resolving a political dispute that led Riyadh and its allies to impose a boycott on Qatar.

Kuwait and the United States have been trying to end the row in which Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and non-Gulf Egypt severed diplomatic, trade and travel ties with Qatar in mid-2017, shattering regional unity which Washington says hinders efforts to contain Iran.

“An agreement has been reached to open airspace and land and sea borders between Saudi Arabia and Qatar as of this evening,” Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Ahmad Nasser al-Sabah said on Kuwait TV ahead of a Gulf Arab summit in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday.

Saudi state agency SPA quoted Saudi Arabia’s de facto ruler Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman as saying the annual gathering of Gulf leaders would unite Gulf ranks “in the face of challenges facing the region”.

Kuwait’s foreign minister said a declaration would be signed at the summit, which was postponed from its usual December date as Riyadh pushed for an agreement towards ending the rift.

The four boycotting countries had accused Qatar of supporting terrorism. Doha denies the charges and says the embargo aims to curtail its sovereignty.

Doha had been set 13 demands, ranging from closing Al Jazeera television and shuttering a Turkish base to cutting links to the Muslim Brotherhood and downgrading ties with Iran.

Senior White House adviser Jared Kushner, joined by Middle East envoy Avi Berkowitz and Brian Hook, a special State Department adviser, were flying to the Saudi Arabia to attend the signing ceremony, a senior Trump administration official said.

Dr. Anthony Fauci said Sunday that he did not anticipate the COVID-19 pandemic death toll in the United States would reach current levels, lamenting that indoor activity and holiday travel has facilitated virus transmission and calling for Americans to take the necessary public safety precautions to slow the ongoing surge.

"To have 300,000 cases in a given day, and between two and 3,000 deaths a day is just terrible," the nation's top infectious disease expert told ABC's "This Week" Co-anchor Martha Raddatz Sunday. "There's no running away from the numbers, Martha. It's something that we absolutely got to grasp and get our arms around and turn that inflection down by very intensive adherence to the public health measures, uniformly, throughout the country, with no exception."

Fauci's comments came minutes after President Donald Trump misleadingly claimed in a tweet that the numbers from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention of infected persons and deaths in the country are "exaggerated," despite coronavirus cases continuing to increase nationwide. Even as recent data fluctuates due to inconsistent reporting over the holidays, the U.S. this weekend topped 20 million COVID-19 cases and 350,000 deaths since the onset of the pandemic 10 months ago.

"The deaths are real deaths," Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said, when asked by Raddatz for his response to the president's tweet. "All you need to do is go out into the trenches. Go to the hospitals and see what the health care workers are dealing with. They are under very stressful situations in many areas of the country. The hospital beds are stretched, people are running out of beds, running out of trained personnel who are exhausted."

"That's real," he continued. "That's not fake. That's real."

On "This Week," Fauci also responded to growing concerns over the speed of vaccinations in the U.S.

"Many states (are) using just a small percentage of the vaccines they have received," Raddatz said. "What's the biggest cause of this delay?"

"I think it's just trying to get a massive vaccine program started and getting off on-the-right-foot," Fauci responded, acknowledging that there have been "a couple of glitches," which he called "understandable," given the scale of the effort. But the doctor contended that recent numbers offered a "glimmer of hope."

"In the last 72 hours, they've gotten 1.5 million doses into people's arms, which is an average of about 500,000 a day, which is much better than the beginning when it was much, much less than that," Fauci said. "So we are not where we want to be, there is no doubt about that, but I think we can get there if we really accelerate, get some momentum going and see what happens as we get into the first couple of weeks of January."

As of Sunday morning, over 14 million vaccine doses have been distributed across the U.S., but only 4.2 million people have received shots, according to the CDC, prompting criticism of the government's rollout plan from both Democrats and Republicans.

"As I long feared and warned, the effort to distribute and administer the vaccine is not progressing as it should," President-elect Joe Biden said Tuesday, claiming that at the current pace, "it's going to take years -- not months -- to vaccinate the American people."

"Unlike the development of the vaccines, the vaccination process itself is falling behind," Sen. Mitt Romney, R-Utah, said in a statement Friday. "That comprehensive vaccination plans have not been developed at the federal level and sent to the states as models is as incomprehensible as it is inexcusable."

Trump noted the gap between the delivery and immunization numbers in a separate tweet Sunday morning, appearing to characterize the disparity as the effect of a successful distribution plan.

"The vaccines are being delivered to the states by the Federal Government far faster than they can be administered!" Trump wrote.

Even if the U.S. vaccination program accelerates, health experts are concerned that continued skepticism about the inoculation could prolong the pandemic. Last week, Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine reported that 60% of eligible nursing home workers were declining the vaccine; Fauci has said that upwards of 70% of the population will likely need to be immunized to achieve herd immunity.

On "This Week," Raddatz referenced that distrust of the vaccine as she pressed Fauci about his prediction that the pandemic's waning days and a sense of "normality" could arrive by the fall.

"It is totally going to depend on the uptake of vaccines," he said. "If from April, May, June, July and August, we do the kind of (increased) vaccine implementation that I'm talking about -- at least (1) million people a day and maybe more -- by the time we end the summer and get to the fall, we will have achieved that level of herd immunity that I think will get us back to some form of normality."

While looking ahead, Fauci recalled the success of a vaccination effort over 70 years ago in his home city of New York that provides a blueprint for what he believes is possible in 2021 across the U.S. In 1947, 5 million New Yorkers were immunized for smallpox in two weeks, he said.

"The goal of vaccinating 100 million people in the first 100 days is a realistic goal," Fauci noted earlier in Sunday's interview. "We can do 1 million people per day. You know we’ve done massive vaccination programs, Martha, in our history. There’s no reason why we can’t do it right now."

A Turkish man succumbed to his injuries from an armed attack in Denmark, local sources said on Sunday.

On Saturday night, unknown people brought two injured Turkish people to the North Zealand Hospital in Hillerod town in a car with bullet marks on the hood, said Ekstra Bladet, a Danish tabloid newspaper.

One of the injured, identified only by initials C.K., lost his life in the hospital despite the doctors' best efforts, it said.

The other injured person underwent a surgery and is now out of danger.

It was alleged that C.K. was a member of the NNV gang and had previously been involved in the criminal organization Bandidos and the street gangs called Brothas.

C.K, 38, was born in the Kulu district of the central Konya province and has five children.

Police in North Sjaelland, which initiated an investigation into the incident, called possible eyewitnesses to cooperate./aa

A shooting at a church in east Texas has left one person dead and multiple other victims injured, the state's governor said Sunday.

The shooting took place Sunday morning at Starville Methodist Church in the city of Starrville. Security officials have taken a suspect into custody.

"Our hearts are with the victims and the families of those killed or injured in this terrible tragedy. I am grateful for the law enforcement officers who apprehended the suspect, and I ask Texans to join Cecilia and me in praying for those affected by this horrific shooting," Abbott said in a statement.

"The State of Texas is working closely with first responders and local officials to ensure that justice is served and that the Starville community has the resources it needs during this time," he added.

The suspect was holed up inside the bathroom of the church after fleeing a manhunt when he was confronted by an armed pastor.

The suspect appears to have wrested the firearm from the pastor and shot him with it, police said.

Smith County Sheriff Larry Smith said one person was being treated for wounds sustained in a fall and another victim was being treated for multiple gunshots. The suspected shooter had a gunshot wound to his hand when he was apprehended in the pastor's vehicle by a sheriff's deputy, Smith said./aa

MOGADISHU, Somalia(AA)

At least three people were killed and eight others wounded in twin bombings in southern Somalia, officials said Sunday evening.

The attack targeted a security checkpoint in the town of Bal'ad, Middle Shabelle region. The casualties include soldiers.

Ali Moalim Hassan, a local police officer, told Anadolu Agency over the phone that the first attack killed two civilians who were near the scene.

"Both attacks were roadside bomb blasts. The first attack killed two civilians and the second bomb exploded after security forces reached the bomb site, killing one soldier," Hassan said.

The injured soldiers were transferred to a hospital in the capital Mogadishu for treatment.

Bal'ad, is an agricultural town located 30 kilometers (18 miles) north of Mogadishu.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.

The attack comes a day after a suicide bomber targeted a road construction project site in Lafole, Lower Shabelle region, that killed at least five people including two Turkish nationals.

Somali-based al-Qaeda affiliated group al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for Saturday's attack.

YAOUNDE, Cameroon(AA)

The UN mission in the Central African Republic on Sunday condemned the recent rebel attacks in several towns of the conflict-ridden country.

In a statement, the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) said attacks in the towns of Damara and Bangassou on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, are aimed at disrupting the electoral process.

“In Damara, armed elements from groups allied with former president François Bozizé attacked the city on Saturday morning. The FACA [Central African Armed Forces] responded to the fire of the attackers causing the latter to flee, while the MINUSCA peacekeepers increased their patrols in the city and on the surrounding axes. The bodies of eight armed elements were found.

“In Bangassou, the attacks began around 5:30 a.m. (0430GMT) with heavy weapon fire against the FACA military post. MINUSCA peacekeepers immediately intervened to protect civilians, secure local authorities and continue the robust patrols... The bodies of five armed elements were found."

The landlocked country is one of the poorest in the world and among the most volatile, characterized by coups and wars since independence from France in 1960.

The situation has been particularly tense after Bozize's candidacy for the Dec. 27, 2020 elections was rejected by the Constitutional Council.

Several militia groups have since attacked civilians, the armed forces and UN peacekeeping forces.

Bozize, a former general who seized power in a 2003 coup, and was overthrown in a 2013 rebellion, planned to run against President Faustin-Archange Touadera.

Touadera was elected in February 2016 and is expected to win a second mandate in the election of the Democratic Opposition Coalition, an alliance of political and other groups, has termed rigged. Provisional results are expected from Jan. 4.

SRINAGAR, Jammu and Kashmir(AA)

Life in Indian-administered Kashmir came to a halt on Sunday as air and road connectivity remained cut off after heavy snowfall in the region, officials said.

“Due to heavy snowfall on the Srinagar-Jammu highway, the traffic movement is suspended and people are advised not to travel," the regional traffic control department announced on Sunday.

The snowfall also disrupted the air traffic in the region due to low visibility and accumulation of snow on the runway.

"No flight operations have taken place at the airport so far this morning due to accumulation of snow on the runway," an official at the Srinagar Airport was quoted by Press Trust of India as saying.

The meteorological department of the region on Saturday had forecasted heavy snowfall in the upper reaches while moderate snowfall in the plains.

The department had said that the western disturbances are likely to enter the Kashmir region by Sunday which may cause moderate to heavy snowfall. The department has forecast snowfall for at least three days in the region.

Meanwhile, in two separate road accidents on Sunday, 15 people were injured in the region after the

Exams postponed

The University of Kashmir and the Cluster University Srinagar on Sunday evening postponed all the exams scheduled for tomorrow in view of the inclement weather and ongoing snowfall.

In a statement, the controller of examinations at Kashmir University, Prof. Irshad Ahmad Nawchoo said: "All undergraduate and professional exams scheduled to be held on Jan. 4 [Monday] are postponed in view of the inclement weather conditions."

New dates for the deferred examinations will be notified separately later on, the statement added.

The Kashmir police zone on Sunday established helplines in all districts of the region for people seeking help during an emergency arising due to snowfall.

The region’s police head, Vijay Kumar, directed all the district police chiefs to keep helpline numbers functional round the clock and render all the required assistance to the needy people.

Disputed region

Kashmir, a Muslim-majority Himalayan region, is held by India and Pakistan in parts and claimed by both in full. A small sliver of Kashmir is also held by China.

Since they were partitioned in 1947, New Delhi and Islamabad have fought three wars – in 1948, 1965, and 1971 – two of them over Kashmir.

Also, in the Siachen glacier in northern Kashmir, Indian and Pakistani troops have fought intermittently since 1984. A cease-fire took effect in 2003.

Some Kashmiri groups in Jammu and Kashmir have been fighting against the Indian rule for independence, or for unification with neighboring Pakistan.

According to several human rights groups, thousands have been killed in the conflict since 1989.

ISTANBUL (AA): The International Union of Muslim Scholars on Sunday called for a mass boycott of “Israel” until it withdraws from all territories under its occupation.

A statement from the Islamic institution, signed by President Ahmed er-Raysuni and General Secretary Ali al-Qaradaghi, was published on its official Facebook page.

“We call for boycotting the “Israeli” state, which is currently occupying the Al-Aqsa Mosque, attacking our brothers and sisters in Golan Heights in Syria, and in Palestine and destroying their lands and homes,” the statement read.

The official release said that resisting occupation by legitimate means and expelling the occupiers is a moral obligation according to Islam, as well as recognized by international law, and UN resolutions.

Underlining that occupation is a temporary situation, and hence does not allow the seizure of private property, the statement said: “Those who purchase or market the goods of occupiers are recognized as sinners who abetted in this crime.”

“We, therefore, call upon all Muslims for a mass economic boycott of Israel until it withdraws from the all occupied territories."

While Egypt and Jordan already recognized Israel, the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan and Morocco were the latest Arab countries that normalized their relations with the Jewish nation in 2020.
