Rational Evidence in the Qur’an
Introduction: Misconceptions about the Qur’an
Many people make the mistake of claiming that the Noble
Qur’an is a mere transmitted text to be followed only by those who already
believe in it. This is a grave misunderstanding, for the Qur’an is a book of
guidance for all humankind. It contains rational proof of the
Oneness of the Creator, the necessity of worshipping Him, and following His
Messengers, establishing evidence against all people.
In this article, we will review some of the rational
evidence found in the Qur’an.
Concept of Rational Evidence in the Qur’an
Rational evidence in the Qur’an refers to the arguments
and proofs presented by the Qur’anic discourse to
establish the truth of faith and affirm it. These proofs encourage logical
reasoning and reflection upon the universe and the self. Some of them are
innate, appealing to the pure human mind without philosophical complexities;
others are cosmic, based on observations of the universe and nature; and others
are introspective, linked to reflection on one’s own self.
The Most Important Qur’anic Rational Evidence
1. The Evidence of Creation and Design
This is one of the most repeated proof in the Qur’an,
where people are invited to reflect on the creation of the heavens and the
earth, the diversity of creatures, and the perfection of their design, all
pointing to the existence of a Wise Creator. Allah says, “Or were they created by nothing, or were they the
creators [of themselves]?” (At-Tur 52:35)
This rhetorical question directs the mind to the
impossibility of beings existing without a Creator and the impossibility of
them creating themselves. It relies on the principle of causality: every
being must have a Creator, and every precise system must have an Organizer.
2. The Evidence of Innate Nature (Fitrah)
The Qur’an emphasizes that its message aligns with the
pure human nature. Humans are innately created to acknowledge their Creator.
The Qur’an reminds mankind of this nature and establishes proof through it for
the necessity of worshipping Allah: “So direct your
face toward the religion, inclining to truth. [Adhere to] the fitrah of Allah
upon which He has created [all] people.” (Ar-Rum 30:30) This is a
rational proof in itself, for what aligns with the pure human nature is
accepted by reason, while that which contradicts it is rejected.
3. The Evidence of Reflection on the Self
The Qur’an calls people to reflect upon their own
creation as evidence of Allah’s power: “And in
yourselves. Then will you not see?” (Adh-Dhariyat 51:21)
Reflecting on how man
was created from a mere drop, how his organs and functions were designed, and
how countless means of life were provided, all serve as rational evidence of a
Knowledgeable and Wise Creator.
4. The Evidence of Cosmic Realities
The Qur’an contains scientific indications
unknown at the time of its revelation, proving that it cannot be fabricated but
is indeed from Allah.
Among these is the description of the stages of
embryonic development: “And certainly did We create
man from an extract of clay. Then We placed him as a sperm-drop in
a firm lodging. Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made
the clot into a lump [of flesh], and We made [from] the lump, bones, and We
covered the bones with flesh.” (Al-Mu’minun 23:12–14)
These facts, discovered only in modern times, confirm
that the Qur’an is not of human origin.
5. The Evidence of Legislative Guidance
The Qur’an presents just and comprehensive legislation
suitable for all times and places. This proves that it is certainly from Allah,
for no human being can create a flawless and eternal system.
Human laws change constantly, reflecting their
limitations, while divine law remains perfect. This is evident in Allah’s call
to reflection: “Then do they not reflect upon the
Qur’an? If it had been from [any] other than Allah, they would have found
within it much contradiction.” (An-Nisa’ 4:82)
This call to reflection is a rational proof that this
Shari`ah cannot be from a fabricated source, but rather is divine guidance from
the All-Knowing, All-Wise.
6. The Evidence of Linguistic and Literary Miracle
One of the rational evidence is the Qur’an’s challenge
to the Arabs — the most eloquent of people — to compose something like it.
Allah says, “Say, ‘If mankind and the jinn gathered
in order to produce the like of this Qur’an, they could not produce the like of
it, even if they were to each other assistants.’” (Al-Isra’ 17:88)
This is a conclusive rational proof; a book that the
most eloquent people are unable to even attempt to imitate, can only be from
Allah.
Qur’anic Rational Evidence Establishing Faith
This profound subject — rational evidence in the Qur’an
— is among the greatest ways to establish the truths of faith. It benefits
non-believers as a call to belief and strengthens believers in their
conviction.
The Qur’an’s appeal to reason demonstrates that faith
in Allah is founded on proof and evidence, not blind imitation or inherited
tradition.
Allah says about the people of faith who follow His
guidance: “Thus do We detail the verses for a
people who use reason.” (Ar-Rum 30:28)
And about the disbelievers upon whom the proof is
established: “And thus do We detail the verses, and
[thus] the way of the criminals will become evident.” (Al-An’am 6:55)
